This is the most beautiful Singkil I've ever seen! Alam mong hindi authentic esp if you're very keen of the elements but the good thing is, the additions (in the music, choreography, costumes) are still very on-point to the necessary character the dance must possess. This is the beauty of cultural development!!! Ito yung gusto ng ilang mga youth like me na ma-realize ng NCCA na dapat, hindi lang cultural preservation ang i-emphasize ng cultural education. Innovation, and re-creation are among the ingredients too for a culture to thrive and to be patronized by all generations. What this group did was NEVER AN INSULT to the authenticity of the art, they just ELEVATED it from the stereotypical Singkil na minsan, nagiging boring na panoorin dahil kulang sa spirit! I hope na marami pang mga cultural troupes and scholars na mag-adhere sa spirit of cultural development para hindi na tayo mapag-iwanan ng mga karatig bansa like Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. Philippines is a rich cultural nation yet hindi lang masyado nabibigyang pride. Salute to the master choreographer and sa skillful dancers! If mas nabigyang-kulay pa ang music (like adding sounds of native flute, lute, chimes and ancient Maranao vocals/chants related sa Singkil), I know this adaptation would be perfect! ♥️
This is the most beautiful choreography I have seen so far. I love that focus was equally given to the pole bearers with their play of the poles, the dances of the hand maidens together with the main characters. It was totally beautiful!
Fantastic.That best one ever..Brilliant choreography.....Out of this world.Can watch this all day.Very proud being a Filipino...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
The interpretation is stylized with elements of originality both in costumes and choreography for more dramatic presention and skill full training of the dancers .it deserves to be commended and worthy for show home or abroad. Mabuhay!
We did a version of Singkil back in high school in the 1970's. It makes me beam with pride that it continues to be an excellent showcase of our Filipino Culture. Maraming salamat mga kababayan ko. Proud to be Filipino!
i can confirm that the leyte dance theatre is way better than the bayahihan dance troupe in so many level. dance group like this is the rightful traditional dancers that should be presented internationally. yes they incorporate ballet on this but still it made all the movement more refined than the basic traditional steps. i can observe that everything was measured even their costumes , postures , legs and arms position , facial expressions , everything seems measured and artistically performed. this dance troupe meant serious business. very captivating, intense and regal performance. bravo. i wonder how many choreographers and directors are involved in this amazing dance group?
Truly wonderful! The Prince is a powerful dancer and seem classically trained. Ballet? I wished they didn't take out the Asik! The slave girl doing the umbrella for the Princess. I started with that. Then progressed to fan dancer. Never made it to Princess as I've left the company. Beautiful choreography - classical influences with very imaginative twists using the bamboos. My favourite version now. Sorry BAYANIHAN!
COVID BROUGHT ME TO THIS MAGNIFICENT AND MAGICAL PERFORMANCE. THIS IS THE BEST DANCE INTERPRETATION OF THE UNDYING AND MONUMENTAL DANCE "SINGKIL". THEIR INTERPRETATION IS MUCH BETTER THAN THE BAYANIHAN DANCE COMPANY OR THE OBUSSAN DANCE TROUPE. THERE IS DRAMA IN EACH OF THE MOVEMENT AND THE STORY IS MORE POIGNANTLY CEMENTED TO THE AUDIENCE HEART. MABUHAY! YOU ARE TRUE OPHERIANS, THE MAHARLIKA KINGDOM OF THE PHILIPPINES. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
there is no maharlika we are called KANDAYA leyte and samar are the last gods standing after islamic conquest and spanish era to the islands of the easT. also known as land of the gods. maharlika does not exist in history we are KANDAYA (DAYA'S DOMAIN)
This is a nice folk dance, binibigyan nila ng twist ang Singkil, dancers were graceful and fantastic! parang may mga ballet dance skills sila, not the stereo type of singkil, Amazing👍👍👍👍👍
Super po! That's one product of cultural activism and development na dapat sanang palaganapin in every elements. Sadly, may ibang mga cultural scholars na nagsi-stick parin sa kung ano yung authentic na kung minsan, nagiging boring dahil "kulang sa dynamism". I believe importante din po talaga ang cultural development along with preservation. Just like what Indonesia did, hindi naman ganon ka-colorful ang music and very rythmic ang dances nila in the ancient times. Dinevelop lang talaga nila in the mid to late 20th century until now para tangkilikin parin at di mapag-iwanan.
I’ve seen so may singkil videos but by far this is the best!!! It was danced gracefully, all fan dancers are in sync, the leading dancers ( I don’t know what to call them) were gorgeous! Her posture and grace and his turns are great to look at and my pet peeve? The pointed toes!!! Marvelous!
A splendid choreography!!! Keep moving on. You are fantastic! Colors, rhythm, power and force, balance and symmetry and asymmetry, beauty and bodies, range of spontaneity, everything, is just so exhilarating. Art at its summit! Thank you. So proud of you!
In Japan the bamboo are for ninjas. In China the bamboo are for kungfu panda. In thailand the bamboo are used for practicing in muthai kickboxing. In PHILIPPINES the bamboo are saying lets love and dance have a fun., not fighting each other. 😀😀😀😘😘
ballet is a stolen dance from the philippines. ballet only arrived in europe after 1521. after magellan saw the natives. who knows what else they saw there.
Goosebumps! Excellent performance. Yes, they also performed in Tampa, Fl but regrets I was not able to watch them. Thank you for sharing. Mabuhay ang Leyte Dance Theater. Pinoy pride.
I remember watching the simple yet elegant version of Singkil many times over as a kid in Manila. It was heart-stopping and mesmerizing. This one is an attempt to create a more balletic interpretation. I am not sure I am a fan of the two main characters doing attitude turns, chaines, arabesque but not quite proficient in the Singkil as much as the corps dancers when they weave in and out of the crisscrossed bamboo poles. To me, the corps dancers were more convincing. Good dancers! But if it's going to be a ballet it has to be consistent, rather than a little bit of this and a little bit of that. It gets too muddled. Great potential. Good luck to this troupe!
A visual feast from a fusion of the charm of the old world and the glitz of modern fabrics. The choreography challenged the dancers' skills and athleticism. In Hawaii, Zach and Pat honed their jazz in Pangalay!
Singkil is my favorite of all time...no other ethnic dance can beat the singkil dance..but i love all muslim dances..it projects royalness and sophistication....
Yes.. thats part of the dance literature...but this is modernized singkil with alot of incorporation in it,so basically the choreographer enjoyed alot of artistic freedom in here...
Lol. Actually, this Leyte Dance Theater toured internationally every year, but on this year, there are 4 or 5 dancers was denied to get a US Visa. Thats the reason, not full cast on this dance. 😀
Hi! If I wish to contact this group of people to have some inquiries regarding the dance, or possibly perform, who can I reach out to? This is a little bit urgent so I hope I can get a reply soon. Thank you! This is for our Annual Filipino Cultural Night at Andrews University, MI.

I still prefer the Bahamian Dance Troupe Version of the Singkil ...... elegance of the princess and masculinity of the prince ..... proper to project the traits of men and women of the Filipinos ......
That is not Leyte dances. It is a muslim or maranao dance in Southern Philippines or south Mindanao. Leyte is in Central Visayas they have another folk dances a Spanish influenced like in Manila.
Magulo. Trying hard. If they wanted to be theatrical and contemporary, sorry, they failed tremendously. The only good thing was the dancers' fans that were as big as the choreographer's ambitious ego. The choreographer's bloated ego should never even try to deconstruct a sublime dance as Singkil without proper understanding that dance can be likened to a moving painting in terms of composition. The choreographer was a major, major, major failure. He should just scrap the whole thing and start all over again without miscalculating his minimal talent. I was so impressed for a few seconds with the prince I thought he was Nureyev in La Bayadere. His cheekbones, posture, and pas de deux were just perfect. Then that was all. A major letdown for Singkil such a grand dame of all Muslim dances.
So unfortunate for u but this performance was well-praised by the audience and I think it won't hurt if u will atleast pay respect to the late choreographer.

The kumintang. So famously known as the Singkil dance
Exquisite and mesmerizing interpretation of a royal Filipino dance! The costumes were also well designed.

Bravo! Maganda ang overall performance pero Singkil Ballet version ang part ni Prince Bekimon.
Let's face it, modernized Singkil is also beautiful like this one. They incorporated it with ballet.

One wrong move and your legs are gone...this is impressive

Leyte Dance Theater sets the standard for Singkil in my opinion. The choreography and the dancers, as well as the bamboo handlers were fantastic.
