@SisterSoulLA - Thank you SisterSoulLA. I appreciate your comment re my credit for this production. Often, Deke and I have been overlooked in favor of bigger names. Jean Terrell was a 'jewel' to work with. I loved her voice, as well.
I never understood it when people said that this was a weak record. I have always loved it, and still do. Very mellow, and beautiful - all three Supremes.
You Are So Right "I Guess I'll Miss The Man" Was A Good Record If The Power'That Be At "Motown Back In 1972 Only Would Have Promoted The Record A Little Better All Three " Supreme's Did A Great Job The Record Still Sound's Great After All Of These Year's.
This was a well-produced record with a great vocal by Jean, but there was no way this was going to be a hit. The Supremes got off to a good start with Jean in the lead, but Motown seemed to lose its way with the group after that. I think When Will I See You Again by The Three Degrees would have been perfect for The Supremes. Motown couldn't seem to get clear on how the Supremes would fit in the emerging disco era of the 70s.
Jean Terrell is not only Supreme... she's divine! These ladies are as great singing up tempo or ballads. Have not seen or heard anything better since then.
The focus went off the Supremes after Diana left. Berry already had a pick for her replacement; it wasn't Jean Terrell. I am a true Supremes fan from the beginning to the end. They each had their own uniqueness they brought to the group and the 70s Supremes surely didn't get the accolades they much much DESERVED❤💙💐💐
What I love about this performance is that Jean is really showing what she can do. I have a feeling that on her earlier Supremes recordings she was asked to "hold back" to more closely match Diana's light, girly and somewhat limited range. Jean could SING!
I so whole heartily agree Rare Musical Gems. Jean sings circles around Diana who is extremely limited, which is why her and Berry decided not to promote the new Supremes, .......because they were far more supreme than the originals
Yeah I really like your insight about this. Jean was told to tone it down a bit with the coloratura and soul because Diana did not have a gospel upbringing and sounded more mainstream. Berry Gordy marketed the Supremes more towards the general audience. Nothing like hearing Jean sing here unfettered.
It's a damn shame how the Supremes got screwed because Motown put Miss Ross first Buddha records wanted the Supremes but for legal reasons they could not leave look at what Buddha did for Gladys Knight and the Pips
I honestly don't think Motown purposely destroyed The Supremes. By this point, Motown really didn't know what to do with the group. Motown also didn't know what to do with a solo Diana Ross. Her releases in the early seventies were very hit-and-miss. Can you imagine a song like When Will I See You Again by The Three Degrees on The Supremes? It would have easily hit number one. I also think something like Highwire by Linda Carr and The Love Squad would have worked for The Supremes. I recently discovered a song by The Supremes called Can't Stop a Girl in Love with Scherrie Payne of on lead. I don't think it was ever released as a single, but I feel it would have been a huge hit. It had sort of an upbeat Natalie Cole kind of feel to it. But like I said, after the first couple of years with Jean leading The Supremes, I don't think Motown was sure what to do with the group.
i had the album with jean and the supremes. the whole album was sososo great. this was one of my favorite songs and i have had such a hard time finding it. thanx so much for posting!
Sheer Class and Grace! Jean Terrell was not about "zip or pizzaz", thankfully. This lead was majestic and magnificent, with a uniquely golden voice of sheer magic! She was far beyond the superficial theatrics that are found on the "zip and pizzazz" level. Instead we see class and grace, and a sublime, intelligent manner...a vibrant inner energy thoughtfully doled out in precious, contained movements. By far the most refined and dimensional voice of any Supreme!
😲i-WHAAAA. I am SO thankful to hear this different take on this song. Also, this is the first time I'm seeing a black woman sing it, and I love it ♡. Slightly different vibe, but keeps the meaning of the lyrics in tact.
This number is from my favorite musical Pippin. I didn’t realize that the Supremes actually sang one of these songs, as did the Jackson five at the time the musical originally went onto Broadway.
Personally, I think this is the best I've heard Jean sing - simply beautiful. I was spellbound watching and listening to this. Linda and Mary sound great on the harmonies, too. I had the LP with this song, but it sounds better live.
I agree with those who say the song sounds better live here--especially the background vocals with that added part toward the end and then the three-part harmony. It's a shame the record didn't end that way. Jean is really on the mark here. Excellent performance.
First time hearing this song. Beautifully done. Yes, Jean Terrell was an excellent replacement for Diana Ross. That combination of ladies had their own very special "magic" as described in an earlier comment and a short string of hits to prove it.
Just beautiful! I had the other 3 songs from this Soul Train episode but didn’t know this existed. Thank you for posting this! 1:40 on the close up of Mary made me well up. Better vocals than the recording. ❤️
One of my favorite Jean songs and this is a superb performance. Jean was already rehearsing with Mary and Cindy before Diana actually left. Then Berry Gordy came to Mary saying he wanted Syreeta Wright instead. Mary said no, so he told her she was on her own. Glad she put her foot down else we would have missed hearing this and many other gems from Jean.
I love The Supremes and when Diana left I wondered what the new line up would sound like with Jean on lead. Well here's the proof, absolutely magnificent, she was the perfect choice. Also actually hearing Mary and Cindy on the recordings once more was long overdue. The 70s Supremes were terrific.
And it only got 'better' as she did it more! I agree, I LOVE this vocal line TOO!! Jean was just BAD! One of the Absolute BEST EVER, PERIOD! Still 'IS' if you haven't heard. :) She STOMPS!
THE SUPREMES (Mary Wilson, Jean Terrell & Lynda Laurence) performing the beautiful ballad from their highly underrated album, a beautiful collaboration with music writer/producer Jimmy Webb (McArthur's Park) titled "THE SUPREMES" with some incredible tunes like "I Keep it Hid", "5:30 Plane", "Paradise", "IL Voce De Silenzio", the whole Album/CD is hidden gem!
it amazing that for a person who said this group that was bland after Diana left ( as u put it) you sure do watch a whole lot of their "bland" performances.
Well, Sherlie Mae, "I" Say 'GOD BLESS YOU'! I have ALWAYS paid attention to the 'names', and I know of what you say! So, it's wonderful to hear you 'surface' up on things. I have OFTEN yearned to know how you were, and what you are doing. I DO hope things are well! And Thank you for your words on Jean Too! She IS a 'Jewel'! In true appreciation of you and your work, C.J.
i had this album and i played it over and over again-especially this one. they were great-i agree with lalumia and sistersoulla-jean is great! i am so glad you posted this one. thank you soso much!!!
@sherliematthews ....Shirlie, I HAVE to agree and even ditto SisterSoulLA! One of my ALL time Favorite Supreme Songs is absolutely THAT! Supreme. It is one that shall never be out of my mind, and ranks with ALL of the greatests! Jean Terrell is my cousin, and Mary Wilson is my Godmother! I have sung with Mary numerous times as well, and am on her dvd! But I MUST say that I have always loved you and your work. God Bless You and Please, KEEP doing it! Love, Carl Jenkins
i love all groupings of the Supremes, but there was something magic about MCJ. they could have and should have gone on to bigger and better things. thanks so much, Motown and Berry, for making sure that didn't happen
Maica Clarke You right because Diana would have been the only person getting the sunlight. It was only about Diana. When Jean, Cindy and Mary came together it was more balance with all three getting to shine. Their sound became more soulful.
As collective work, the album "The Supremes / Produced & Arranged by Jimmy Webb" from which this song "I Guess I'll Miss The Man" is part off, is one of their best vocal collaborations. The song "I'll Keep it Hid" with Mary Wilson on lead is one of the most beautiful SUPREMES ballads ever recorded!
I ran into Jean on LaBrea and Centinela few years ago. I lost my cell phone, so that was that. Past or present there's no greater lead vocalist where I'm concerned. I'd love to see her do one of my tunes. The honor would never Cease.
Funny I ran into Jean at the Home Depot at Fairfax and Slauson a few years ack. She seemed surprised that I knew who she was. She was gracious none the less. I also ran into Telma Hopkins at the same home depot. Telma is a lovely lady inside and out.
When you listen to the tone, pitch, harmony & strength Jean Terrell brought to THE SUPREMES is clear to determine that Diane Ross wasn't SUBSTITUTE, Diane Ross was REPLACED!
Jimmy Webb was a clever guy, because this track produced by Sherlie Mae Matthews and Deke Richards, opened the album that had his name on it, but he knew how to build from it. After this one came "5:30 Plane", still slow but a little stronger, then the cover "Tossin' and Turnin'" (which could have been a hit single) and so on. Bright ideas all over.
Lord...
The Voice...
that is Jean Terrell
And this was live!!! better than the recorded version
That damned Jean Terrell! WHAT A VOICE!
@SisterSoulLA - Thank you SisterSoulLA. I appreciate your comment re my credit for this production. Often, Deke and I have been overlooked in favor of bigger names. Jean Terrell was a 'jewel' to work with. I loved her voice, as well.
thank you for the great production on one of the best yet most overlooked Supremes single ever💜 I've always seen your name on the record 😊
These three were great vocal blenders.
as i have said before this woman can sing.
BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE...and it was all live vocals! BRAVO Jean, Mary and Lynda!
Yessss I Agree 💯👍
This is soooo much better than the original recording! JEAN TERRELL can sing to me forever!
The Supremes may have lost Diana Ross in 1970 - but they got their SOUL back! Long live the 70s Supremes!
That harmony was powerful
"What a Beautiful Song, It deserved a #1 spot on the charts and so did ,"TOUCH"...
it's amazing how under rated and ignored Jean Terrell's days with The Supremes are..what a magnificent lead singer..
Wow her voice 😍😍
Loved The Jean Terrell Years, AGREE TOTALLY with @lalumia, AMAZING SINGER!
I never understood it when people said that this was a weak record. I have always loved it, and still do. Very mellow, and beautiful - all three Supremes.

If Diana had sung this with her weaker voice they'd say how strong it is, Strictly Million seller.
absolutely right...i still have the 45 which I fell for on first hearing ❤️was crushed when it failed💙@@tyronefrazier8599
a SOUL TRAIN performance...a fitting tribute to DON CORNELIUS!..this single should have been a big hit in 1972..maybe it will be now!!
Jean Terrell is not only Supreme... she's divine! These ladies are as great singing up tempo or ballads. Have not seen or heard anything better since then.
Great job on lead vocal, Jean! An excellent vocalist.
That voice! Why she didn't stay longer and take the group to another level is so sad.
The focus went off the Supremes after Diana left. Berry already had a pick for her replacement; it wasn't Jean Terrell. I am a true Supremes fan from the beginning to the end. ❗wow!...this is one of the most thoughtful comments ever on The Supremes, and JT specifically...and I completely agree❗
Beautiful. How did this track (and album) get missed and not promoted much by Motown. Jimmy Webb was a great writer and arranger.
😲i-WHAAAA. I am SO thankful to hear this different take on this song. Also, this is the first time I'm seeing a black woman sing it, and I love it ♡. Slightly different vibe, but keeps the meaning of the lyrics in tact.
My Beautiful Aunt Lynda ❤️ 💕 This is so Awesome too see !! WOW! AWESOME! REAL TALENT
Spent my childhood, my adolescence, my whole life listening to this song and to the supremes. Thanks a lot for posting this, I'm touched and thrilled.
Absolutely wonderful! Beautiful voice and beautiful woman (all three of them actually!). And you can easily tell it's no playback!
Gorgeous...I love The Supremes...especially with Jean Terrell, her vocals were amazing...ta..x

What a beautiful song wow
Utterly Supreme, as good as anything any line up ever did!
Just gorgeous. Jean had such a good voice and was beyond beautiful. My favorite Supremes era were the Jean years.
Mine tooooooo ⭐❤️⭐
I agree with those who say the song sounds better live here--especially the background vocals with that added part toward the end and then the three-part harmony. It's a shame the record didn't end that way. Jean is really on the mark here. Excellent performance.
Jean Terrell's best live Supremes TV performance.
Jean Terrell's best live Supremes TV performance.
I think their recorded and live-performance versions of this great song could both have used better and louder background vocal arrangements.
First time hearing this song. Beautifully done. Yes, Jean Terrell was an excellent replacement for Diana Ross. That combination of ladies had their own very special "magic" as described in an earlier comment and a short string of hits to prove it.
Jean's vocal versatility still astounds me. I just LOVE the lady's voice...
Me tooooooo!! 🌹❤️⭐
Better than the recorded version in my opinion.
Just beautiful! I had the other 3 songs from this Soul Train episode but didn’t know this existed. Thank you for posting this! 1:40 on the close up of Mary made me well up. Better vocals than the recording. ❤️
I'm so glad that the presentation right here is SOOO SUPREME that it totally eclipses ANY foolishness._Period! THIS IS SUPREME, MARY, JEAN and LYNDA!
A stellar live performance by Jean Terrell(lead), Mary Wilson, and Lynda Lawrence.
They certainly lived up to their name.
One of my favorite Jean songs and this is a superb performance. Jean was already rehearsing with Mary and Cindy before Diana actually left. She sings it with more power on this live version as opposed to with more restraint on the studio recording.
I like this song very much .
Jean is terrific!

i love all groupings of the Supremes, but there was something magic about MCJ. they could have and should have gone on to bigger and better things. thanks so much, Motown and Berry, for making sure that didn't happen

Wow, I love jean Terrell. I still want to marry her.
I like how they ended the song. Very pretty.
Fabulous Jean Terrell.
Yes great song I love me some Jean Terrell

stunning vocals. still thrilling after all these years.

Mary Wilson the best Supreme of them all.
CORRECTION this was produced by Sherlie Matthews and Deke Richards; but appeared on the Jimmy Webb LP (circa. 1972).
Most beautiful...
WOw amazing~
God Almighty! She's the best female vocalist...God!
Best line-up!
perfection.
STILL brilliant
This is one of my favorite songs from Jean, Mary and Cindy. It is from the broadway show "Pippin".
@SpazChat Oh, I don't know about that. "He's My Man" is an amazing track! It may have a disco sound, but the ladies gave it some real soul.
SUPREME!
Jean is just such a beauty here, god damn.
Sherlie Mathews produced it and was a member of the Blackberries...xo
Jimmy Webb was a clever guy, because this track produced by Sherlie Mae Matthews and Deke Richards, opened the album that had his name on it, but he knew how to build from it. @nubianmanmusic oh! what a superb list songs!
JEAN! Girl don't hurt us!!!
l guess I.ll miss the man was a top 20 hit on the adult contemporary chart.
really?...never knew that!
For the record, this song was a cover from the musical Pippin :) It wasn't an original from them, just an adaptation. Amazing, nonetheless :)
Yes. I saw Pippin twice on Broadway. The solo by Jill Clay burgh was adequate. By contrast, Jean SOARS, and Mary and Lynda add tight harmonies.
Fabuli!
Excellent version, better than the single!!
+Edgar Soberón Torchia absolutely agree, Edgar! Jean in brilliant voice, giving it just that little bit more than the recorded version!
I wish that the girls recorded the song with the extra vocals as in "live" performances.
Superb
