Hearing this makes me me my late eldest brother who'd play this song on his guitar, sing, and teach me the harmony or 2nd voice. I love the 70s and 80s music. Pure love, pure lyrical, and melodious. Amazing era!

I have always loved this song. I buried my dog George today, and it popped into my head and gave me so much comfort. Grief is the price we pay for love. Thanks Neill - you are such a decent human being and a damn fine guitar player. I'm glad we were both around at the same time and some of the same places tho you're a friend I've never met.Your music is a such a gift. Long may you run my friend.

throughout the literary history in nearly every culture...heros are defined by their unique, talented and deep wisdom of soul, who can lay down words and/of music as a foundaton for others to stand, lean or hang on to... Neil Young has long provided a talent deserving of hero status. He has saved more than a few lives.

What makes me reflective and sad is to witness all those people at the wedding, children included, having such a momentary good time, laughing and enjoying themselves. I'm happy for them. Then I realize they are all dead now. Yet, we can still see and appreciate their joy. As if we too are at their wedding now. I hope the married couple lived a wonderful life together.

    • @TylerNotaro
      @TylerNotaro 8 лет назад +13

try to be sure right from the start* meaning, like in gambling, no perfect cards you're dealt will guarantee the jackpot, but if it is the best hand you can get, you are less likely to lose everything. Gives one the sense of security to play on without the fear of being swindled or defeated. This analogy transcends the songs meaning which in my mind is more basic of a concept than what you proposed which I'm almost certain isn't what Neil Young was going for.

It's hard as well to accept you can't be anyone's dear one. That could sound like it's been been written by somebody in his/her? 20's, and next day things could suddenly change, but no. I've spent 4 full decades on earth, and I do know I'll die at least as lonesome as I'm today.

That is what Oasis would say, take advantage of things that come your way. Who knows what is behind door no 500? Interesting how we get different prospective yet it can all be poignant. My take on things is Neil knows the sword has two edges and warns us. I don't think anyone plans on falling in love it just happens somehow. Elvin Bishop also has an interesting take on this, I fooled around and fell in love.

I never felt this song so profoundly until my Pop's passing. When I was a little girl, I thought this song was about Boo Radley.. " I have a friend I've never seen.." Someone should call him.." This song leaves me in tears everytime I listen. Nothing is more devastating than the loss of love be it death divorce or a falling out with a friend or family member.Powerful prose.

movies are a trip, they make laugh, cry , sing and feel and learn about life. I felt so sorry for Boo, never ever coming out of that house except at night, cause he was afraid of people . He had been mistreated by his father, I think. To Kill a Mockingbird , it doesn't get any better.

The images are perfectly suited to the song. Its timeless sentiment is as true today as it’s always been. The video reminds me of the transitory nature of life, when the video was filmed these people were young with their lives ahead of them, now they’re long gone. Little did they now that they’d be immortalised.

Real message is to reach out to people who you think need help. Talk to them, don't ignor them when you see them withdrawing. A bad thing. Get connected with the people in your life or even strangers. YOU can make a difference. WE can make a difference in the lives of others and should. Broken hearts over romance only, is a small piece. The lonileness of life is unbearble for many people, get involved, any small way.The number of us with our heads in dreams is great! People are the ONLY cure.

I personally think it's not that people get their hearts broken because of Neil, I think it's the song that reminds people of their broken heart, of situations that happened in the past. People feel with Neil's words, they can relate to them, and often, being able to relate yourself with something or someone helps to ease the pain and speeds up the healing progress and for that I thank Neil Young.

I was listening to a Nils Lofgren radio interview earlier in the day and found out he played the piano on this recording. This was the video I came upon and was mesmerized by the old "video" of what looks like a wedding reception. To look into the past and see that those people enjoyed the celebration just like us. The song technically has no connection and it's decades after but someone put them together and it was as Jon Anderson would say, "Magical". I will sleep happy tonight.

In that way this song is a manifesto for me as an artist. I think the most important thing an artist should strive for is to break his audience's heart. Because that's as deeply as you can feel, and anything that can touch people there is worth doing because it connects them to the divine and their own humanity. So artists must strive to break hearts, but only Love can do so. So artist must fall deeply in love with their work, and their work must be staggeringly heart breaking-ly beautiful.

I think very few "famous" people in this world are as down to earth and unpretentious as Neil Young seems. He has stayed true to his style of music all these years. I really don't think he was ever interested much in breaking any sales records, he just wanted to share his art.

LOVE the line “try to lose the down that he found” WHAT? How brilliant is that lyric? None of us desire to be down and removed from life, but sometimes we “find” sadness..or it finds us…and there it is. This song and the old clip breaks my heart every time. Although the young man “chasing” the camera makes me laugh.

It is about his wife. Neil and the Cowgirl he loves reunited after over 30 years. He did stop doing drugs and she came back. She performed with him in his Redrock concert to show their reunion. All of his emotional, brokenhearted songs are about the Cowgirl he loves. This song plays beautifully on acoustic 12 string if you want to try it.

I heard this song, Only Love Can Break Your Heart for the first time in late November or December of 1969 on the radio, just several months before 4 Kent State University was shot down in Kent Ohio on May 4, 1970. Even before American Top 40 countdown which was debuted on July 11, 1970.

the most beautiful raw version i ever heard was at a csny concert about 10 years ago. just neil and his piano. i swear it touched deep inside and pulled out pain i had clung to forever. the most incredibly touching music ever. that one song worth the price of admission. one of my best life experiences ever.

"Derek, I thought the same thing at first, but then after reading Donald Daugherty's comments I realized that the cars had the steering wheels on the right side of the car (which he so rightly pointed out), which they do in England. I then Googled "the marriage of Rose Carmel and Solly Gerscowit" and found this video, so I would have to say it's in England." by Robert Silvis.

I was feeling really sad today, and I didn't know what to do. I decided to ask Bard for help, and it suggested that I listen to the song "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" by Neil Young. I'm so glad I did! This song is so beautiful and heartbreaking, and it really helped me to feel better. It's a reminder that we're not alone in our pain, and that love is always worth it, even if it hurts sometimes. Thank you, Bard, for your help!

That's a given Todd. The crap coming out now is about money and 15 minutes of fame. The sad part is that people are so starved for something to listen to and hang their hearts on, that they buy into it. It's cheap and boring.

I'd agree on best live music era. Although I'm not a fan of a lot of mainstream music producer today many people who would never have gotten a chance to show their talents in the past can spread their music with the Internet. Plus we get all the music of the 60's :p just sucks that we can't see it performed live!

Never really was impacted by this song until I heard it with this video, which makes you realize the beauty and genius of it. This was from a time when children called their fathers "papa," when men had to be really tough, and a good stogie was the sign of success and wealth. It was the generation of the young children here that fought and died in WW II. Funny thing is that over a half million have viewed this on YT but probably most of those in the film clip never saw it at all.
