this! threading through sucks. a lot of strings i've tried on thread thru bridges just can't fit. especially when theres a fabric wrap at the end it can get rough
@@anthonydawson8080 It cannot be beyond the wit of man to invent some kind of spring clip that holds ball ends in place once seated so they don't pop out too easily
Yeah, that's right. But it also emphasizes the lows a lot due to its high mass. And it's a G&L proprietary design not meant to be a replacement for conventional F-style Instruments.
I fitted a KSM bridge on my bass a few months ago. Lightyears better than any other bridge that I tried before. Unlimited sustain, singing overtones, amazing dynamics, sweet musical top end, clarity without harshness.
It has to be custom...I've never seen one all black with a musicman pick guard...don't think I've ever seen a H pickup on one like a MM either....idk...I almost bought their Jazz bass mockup, but held out and saved up a few hundred dollars more and got a Sterling Stingray and sold my 80s Mexican Fender lol...(I guess I'm just not a P Bass guy, although I do kinda regret it....)
I love how the comparison was done by playing Hair by Graham Central Station. That's the first time I've seen a bass comparison video of any kind play a song I absolutely love in many years.
I put one of these on my bass. The difference between stock and this bridge is night and day. Way more sustain, more focused notes, more clarity. Especially on the low B.
What I’ve not liked about these bridges is that you cannot adjust the string spacing unless you cut new slots in the saddles. Saddles that can be adjusted individually would make this bridge way better IMO. Also, as others have mentioned, slots instead of holes for installing strings would be nice too. Warwick & Hipshot bridges have all these features already.
The stock Harley Benton MM style bridge is pretty bad, I replaced it with Chinese copy of a Hispshot A style bridge as soon as I could. This bridge looks nice too.
I've always thought the bridge has been highly underestimated as it applies to tone and playability. This KSM is a really good bridge but I agree with others here below. String through only is a real pain in the a$$. ESPECIALLY if your doing repairs or moving strings that have already been installed.
HI Ron! Just wanted to clarify that our bridge can be used for a string through and top load setup, depending on whichever you prefer. Hope this helps clear things up!
5 string. You can play everything on a 5 you can on a 4, plus you can play across rather than along the neck. Except for a couple of 4 string basses I have for sentimental value, they're all 5s. Or 6s. I could happily spend the rest of my life never playing a 4 again.
I never got on with 5s so I built a 35.5 inch scale 4 string bass with 2 octave fingerboard. It's strung B E A D (highest available note being equivalent to 19th fret on G string of a standard 4). Best of all possible worlds for me and a low B string minus G string option is worth trying if you have a spare 4 string bass and want to go deep!
G&L bridge saddles don't provide nearly as much body contact as the ksm does. G&L saddles are like any other saddle where the height set screws are the contact point. This would be more like..... almost as good as a Babiczs bridge.
thanks for sharing! Too bad the 5-string is 17mm and the bass I'd want to put it on is 16.5mm. Yeah that's like a hair difference but I've never swapped bridges before >_> **Edit** Apparently I can get one unslotted and have the saddles cut to get a different string spacing :D
You guys have drifted pretty far from what a bass's job is in a band and in a mix IMO. I'm impressed with your abilities but question if what you do can be considered bass or is it rather something different and seperate from the job bass is there to do ? (a melodic rythm bridge). Watching this it occured to me that those parts would stomp all over everything else in the mix. Just something that occured to me while watching this video. Personal opinion only, not meant as a statement of fact. Just curious what y'all's thoughts might be on the idea. I'm a just 66 year old bassist from Canada and have been a regular working stiff bassplayer since 1969 playing pretty much any style of music from funk to punk and various ethnic styles and fusions to formula country with no claims to fame or glory. Please don't take this as an attack on your playing. It is not meant as such. I think you guys are amazing players. I just question if the job of a bassist is now as obsolete as I am ...B^ )
I think, in order to really showcase the effect the presented gear has on the tone, it's more than justified to play stuff that's outside of what a 'classic' player would play or what would be expected of the instrument in a mix. To me personally, it's about sonic exploration.( I'm not a virtous player or someone who gigs a lot, mind you) If I knew that all I ever wanted to be in a band is a bread and butter bassist, I'd probably just a get like a squier jazz, maybe an ampeg or some good clean amp and call it a day. Considering how much frequency content gets cut in a mix, there's honestly no reason to bother with gear if the tone is inside the fingers and most live techs only use your DI anyway. Hope this doesn't sound disrespectful. A solid bassline will always be part of a good song, even if it's just roots, 5ths and 8ths, no matter the trend, century or genre. But I think it's important to also show what the instrument can be, how we can switch things up. So no: nothing's obsolete!
@@haxenheimer9707 Thank you for your reply. No offence taken and I apologise for going off topic. I'm just trying to get an insight into what's going on with bass in modern music from outside looking in. These days I mostly just play a mandolin tuned like a bass thru an old Boss Gt-8 pedal board and noodle along with soundtracks and such for my own amusement. One love...B^ )
We’re not only showcasing equipment, we’re also trying to produce entertaining videos. I guess this has turned into a bit of an own „genre“ of music. Mixed for bass, mixed even for specific sound details to highlight certain aspects.
Sorry, but an AB-comparison with two different players for a part that has subtle influence on the sound at best is one of the dumbest things I've seen so far.
This bridge is useless for string changing and intonating. It has been around for a while but any gigging bass player will not use it because it is a pain in the ass to operate fast. Adjusting the saddle height requires a new intonation set up. Changing strings needs tools ... pointless design.
If you are using the same strings there are no tools or adjustments required. The beauty of the bridge is it locks in place and nothing goes out of adjustment. Also, you do not need any tools to change strings.
Here's the bass we used in this video --> bit.ly/3hISY0Q
Now add slots in the tail end so strings can be dropped and slid into place without needing to be threaded through holes 👍

KSM are the best bass bridges period. And that bass player was absolutely superb.
These were developed in my home town music shop. Awesome to see you guys review it!
G&L Saddlelock bridge has been doing most of this for a long time. AND it's got a toe that goes down into the body to increase vibrational transfer.

Oh and Rene!!!!! It's so good to see you!!!!
Those bridges are badass. And I live a few blocks away from the store.
I have half a dozen basses with this bridge. It is the bomb!!
My favourite Bass guitar!!!!!!!
Bass bridges are not boring at all. They are very important and interesting to me. New engineering ideas

The bassist was awesome, loved that groove and tone at the beginning

When the guy with long hair was doing the demo, what do you call when he is playing and it almost sounds like a pop on some of the high octave notes

Nice review; makes no sense to put a $200 Bridge on a €168 Harley Benton fretless - but.....who cares!
Ah yes, but only if the price of the bass is in any way relevant to the quality. With Harley Benton that is simply not the case.
It's funny how that bridge is more expensive than the rest of that Harley Benton bass
