Check out current top players (mcdavid, Crosby, bedard, etc). Their top hand is almost glued to the top of their hip as their base position when they have the puck. You become much more versatile and agile.
He’s mostly talking about in stride when skating. You never want it tucked in when in stride and stick handling. However You do bring it closer to your body for a quick snapper, a deek or within traffic which is often.
@@kirkelleson642 that's what better players do though. Maybe full speed forward stride where you have one hand on your stick. Linear crossovers and shuffle strides/corkscrew dominate the majority of skating in games now and the better players keep their top hand very close to their hip unless making some specific dekes or shooting.
@@koehlza no they don’t. I’ve played hockey since 5yrs old so i personally know from experience. It may look closer when seeing from your tv but proper technique is hand off your hip and not glued to it as your wrists will also guide your elbow. Quick and fast stick handling to set up a rapid shot maybe. It might be closer like 6-10” But top hand should never ibe “glued” to the hip.
@@kirkelleson642 we might be arguing over semantics and definition of "glued". I'm not trying to say it's literally attached to your hip, but much closer than the gap he was trying to show as proper technique. He literally says to keep your top hand out and then when he demonstrates pulls it back in. I've also played hockey since I was 5 and the game is a lot different now, players are much more skilled, but some coaches are still using a lot of outdated techniques.
Form is objective. Everyone’s form is different because our bodies are different. Crosby and McDavid do not follow this style of stickhandling. That doesn’t mean what this coach is saying is wrong. But he has to keep in mind that if everyone skated, stickhandled, passed, and shot the same exact way you’d have a lot of players hindering themselves. Watch Kaprisov stickhandle too that is another big example.
“Objective” = “not open to different interpretations; i.e. verifiable/factual; Or, “without bias”. _”Subjective”_ is the word that describes something that has “more than one correct answer”; Or, something that is not based on logic/facts.
I wish we had coaches like this in the 90’s when I was playing youth hockey. Im 39 now and still being able to improve little things despite my age to implement into my (mediocre), yet competitive and quite fisty beer league.
This is the first video this guy has ever created that could actually be useful to travel teams and Elite Youth Hockey players. A lot of high school players could benefit from extending arms and rolling the top-hand wrist.
A lot of the stuff you see in these videos comes naturally over time. Nobody sat down and thought about how you should do this or that, they just did it. Everything in sports is made up at some point. There's no blueprint.
Not just the top, like literally every single player tucks the hand in to their body. I don’t think this guy knows what he’s talking about, either that or NHL players are clearly playing incorrectly. 😂
I get what he’s saying but nobody skates that low when stick handling lol and the strides he teaches aren’t the most accurate either but definitely a good coach 💯
Love what he is saying but right after what he says he puts his hand on his hip! I will say I have played hockey my entire life and I am a hip stick handler. I have a theory that people who can skate very well stick handle on the hip and those who aren't blessed in skating skill stick handle better off the body..... don't know if it is true just something I have noticed
“No puck handler in the NHL skates like this (with their top hand tucked near their body)” Then at 0:54 dude IMMEDIATELY tucks his hand into his body as he handles the puck. Also, I’m watching NHL playoff hockey and literally every single player handling the puck tucks their hand into their body, seriously watch ANY NHL player handle the puck. Either everyone else (including himself) is wrong in how they handle the puck or this dude is just spinning a tale. 🤷🏻♂️
Dude immediately loses control of the puck...I would not take stick handling advice from him...probably charging these kids thousands of dollars for these "lessons".
Ahh a lot of players especially top players. They hold close to the hip. They learn to have quicker hands and reaction. Arms off the body makes it easier to knock you off the puck. Is this guy American?
The little kid in the back 😂 it’s literally me when coaches explaining
Same lol
Same
Same
My coach wouldve killed us if we did that wtf
im pretty sure i absorbed like 10% of the words my coaches ever said lol
I am now qualified to manage the mighty ducks
And the jets😢😢
Only Gordon Bombay is qualified to manage the Mighty Ducks

The top hand in his ribs at the end was pure gold!😂
You mean through the whole video
I know damn well those kids don’t understand a word
But he goes elbow to rib cage when he’s stick handling lmao
Those that can't do teach, as they say.
It’s more about his arm being off the body which he does his hand is what’s close to the body
That's why he's not in the NHL lol
*I do the “hand to pork sword” alot
Nope, elbow was out hand was in on the body, read a book
Playing youth ice hockey was one of the greatest times of my life.
Me too man😢... although i wasnt able to play untill i was 13 so i didnt get that many years in and we were too broke for rep
immediately brings the stick back in at the end of the video.....
"everyone do this!" "I NEVER SAID SIMON SAYS, ALL OF YOU GET OUT!"
Check out current top players (mcdavid, Crosby, bedard, etc). Their top hand is almost glued to the top of their hip as their base position when they have the puck. You become much more versatile and agile.
So true, I only play my back arm out when receiving hard sauce or on an on-hand snapshot

Hockey has such cool natural sounds
Ok Mr. Stranger on the Internet, you've got a deal.
Top notch bro😂
These kids are lucky to be in his presence!!
I laid down on the ice but I didnt get better at stick handling. In fact it became more difficult.
Then, you obviously need more practice, and more Fiber in your diet.

you can tell how they initiate stickhandling?
@@guitarplayer30001 watch them play? not that hard man

This is the type of guy I just wouldn’t want to listen to
Hes a goof

Don’t discredit his other stuff
This explains why most hockey players are left handed.
I haven't played since a was a wee lad, but yeah it always felt perfect for me, being a leftie
And this is why left handed players are so prevalent in hockey. Because many right handed players play left because their top hand is key.
Fantastic channel, great tips.
"keep arms off the body" says go and immediately places his top hand close to his body.
I am a youth hockey player this helps me a lot
Sometimes I love these videos because it brings me right back to early morning practices when I was a little guy.
This is as fast as I can goooooo 😂love it
Here comes scott stevens.. and then you're looking at the ceiling.... just crushed. Keep the head up.
This coach managed to hold the kids attention AND the parents at the same time lol
Your vids are top-flight man!
Damn. He's a good teacher. I wish I played hockey when I was younger.
Amazing coach
It’s all preference
His exaggerated wide stances, strides and movements in every video are something you see with these trainers, but rarely, if ever with pros.
What a coach! The goddamn best!
Great teacher
I feel like I learned things I'll never use but still appreciate it.
Good fundamentals 🙌🏼🤘🏼
Tyler Kennedy has training videos and he basically says do the opposite in close, isolation, control, technique and he’s made it to the show
Yeah, this guy seems to be making it up as he goes. Something about him seems off.
Always wear a helmet when playing hockey or a coaching
Nailed it..100% right

Ight cool now I just need to learn how to ice skate
nhl top player has their stick to their hip. they dont have hands far away from body.

@@zebdawson3687 great comment !!!
"The lower you are, the easier it is to control", sounds like dribbling at a quick pace. Wish I got the chance to play hockey as a kid
you can still try man , theres adult leagues for entry level players . you can even go try a pickup game with openice usually on weekends
Bottom hand ONLY adds support... haha. AA at it's finest
Another good example of puck handling technique is Taylor Hall, one of the best puck carriers in the NHL.
The Nike tech though
This video gave me PTSD
Great vid 🏒💪
As someone who plays roller hockey, I still find it mind blowing how he can just easily slide his skates out like that to get a lower stance
Ice helps.
oh my god, AustenAlexanderTV was spot on
Hips down, knees bent, elbows out.
This makes me want to be a kid and learn hockey lol
“Keep the arm off the body” then demonstrates with arm tucked into the body
Arms off the body but goes back to the body 🫤
He's stick handling with his top hand in his body.
"But when do we play???"
Dude lost it when he was going slow and when he tried to go fast. What a scam lol
Man I miss practices... I miss it all..
Did he just go back to stick handling close to the body?
i've heard the arm out thing... then i watch the nhl and everyone has their arm pretty close to their side.
You are supposed to have a more firm bottom hand and use your top for the stick handling
sounds like a newfie😂
Sounds a little like Canada.
Thats some mew york kind of coach 😂
Imagine paying thousands of dollars for your 7 your old to hear/see this
I get what he’s saying but nobody skates that low when stick handling lol and the strides he teaches aren’t the most accurate either but definitely a good coach 💯
I remember my first day coaching football (soccer) too…..
Cap.
No way this is the rink I used to play in as a kid, I broke that glass behind him twice 🤣 He might have actually been one of our trainers
literally failed both times
Coach the leafs, they need it
Open invitation to the rib cage *wink wink nudge nudge* 😏
taking wayyyyy to complex for the little dudes
These kids are going to talk about you forever. A good coach changes lives

That stance looks like a good way to get your head taken off
The dude's arm is on his body everytime he goes to puck handle...
Is this Donevan Rec?
If you’re reading this, the closest you’ll ever come to NHL ice is in the stands.
just realized i’m def doing ts

so true
how come sidney crosby keeps his left hand close to his body and he's the best?
Is this donavon arena in oshawa or am i wrong?
Look at Zegras when he does his moves, looks like a baby giraffe his legs are so far apart. Dude does Van Damm dekes
I believe that's for balance, leverage and dominance 🤷
Ok Mr. KnowItAll
Let’s see if he puts a helmet on The coach
But same😂😂😂😇
Top hand is often found in front of the belly too. That keeps your mass centered for improved agility. Arms out = off balance?!
Good god.. kids take a message...
Just play hockey it'll come to you
you need a head mic and a PA speaker to save your voice...
donevan arena in the shwa?😂
Jason Spezza?
Get LOW!!!!!
How the hell do you stand on skates my first time with skates I could hardly stand and I holding on to the rim 💀
Way too intense for 8 year olds
