The M16-038BK was the first real pocket knife I bought. I love the design of it and bought it as a recommendation from the guy at a knife shop after I told him I was looking for a folder that I can take backpacking/hiking, is solid but light weight, and can handle basically any task.
CRKT OFFICIAL if you guys did a version of this knife with ikbs and a better steel like s30v, 154cm or maybe d2, and charge $90 for it, I would buy it.
I’m in the same boat here. The first real EDC knife I ever bought was a CRKT M16 model as well. Being a lefty, the auto lawks system got in the way more than it helped and the AUS 4 blade left a lot the be desired. But seeing this new take on the M16 line brings back memories of a simpler time in both my life, and the EDC community. I may have to pick one of these up for old time sake. I definitely like the changes that CRKT made here
Everyone talks about how the Tenacious was their first serious knife. This was mine too, in Northern California here at the Home Depot and places like that, the M16 was the “nice” knife they had. I didn’t like mine. I had the dirt cheap one and it was way to thick and heavy. I had trouble carrying. But that was.. 17 years ago. I wanna see them now.
I don't see this as equal to the Steel Will or Ontario offerings at the same price point. When you could be getting D2 and fit&finish better than CRKT is capable of, why settle?

Nice. The M16-04Z was first serious EDC knife. I was happy because it was AUS-8 which was nice, at the time. It's still in my rotation for when I want a big beastly tanto.
Those were Gerber designs that crkt brought back to life!. I was rocking the Gerber EVo mid as my pocket knife for years. I now use a CRKT m16 10-s which is almost identical to the evo mid. The I like the mid a bit more than the slightly larger version shown in this video. Although all three the mid, the one in this vid, and the gerber evo mini are awesome knives!
Wow, I was hoping CRKT and some other companies, upgraded their steel this year , but 12c27n is barely an upgrade over 8cr13mov, ca'mon guys , D2 must be pretty cheap right now. The first US company to upgrade to D2 or 14c28n on their entire budget line will make a killing , trust me , and whoever doesn't , over the next few years , will just fade away. You heard it hear first. Just my 2 cents...
Brian F I do agree that more and more companies are going to D2 and 14c28n and that in the next few years that most companies will be there. I would say that the 12c27 is on par with AUS-8 which for $40 or less is doable. I would not pay more but good for the price.
My first serious knife was the AUS 8 version of the 1* M16 with a serrated/tanto combo blade. The edge has been dull and I have tried to sharpen it myself, and even taken it somewhere to get it sharpened, but seems nobody knows how to sharpen that weird chisel grind that they used to put on those blades. I still have the knife, and having learned a lot more about blades, grinds, and how to sharpen them, I think I'll give it a go in trying to sharpen it again. Good to see another "first seriously knife was a CRKT M16" guy!
Yeah I think for nostalgia reasons I'm gonna sharpen the M16-1* and putting it back in my rotation. I only have that and the new M16-13ZLEK that I picked up a couple of years ago. I've since moved on to Spyderco folding knives, so the rest of them are Spydercos.
Yeah that is a different grind for sure. I actually found that 20 degrees on the left side and a like 28 degrees on the right side was optimal (crazy i know)...I actually did a review on my CRKT after 4 years in the oilfield. Check it out if your interested. ruclips.net/video/t4efF5DLVaE/видео.html
Hey, I walked in Walmart buying a case of .45 ammo for my HK USP.. I glanced at the knives, and said let me see that one! It was only priced at $19.33! It was a CRKT M16 01KS with spear blade, stainless steel grip in a all black finish! This is my first real knife lol. I’m like 28 years old, and I’ve always been in to pistols, and not so much knives.. Well, I’ve had the CRKT M16 01KS a few days now. I have nothing to compare it to but at $19 bucks who cares! Anyways, it is SOLID! Absolutely NO rattle, tight blade lockup, no wobble on any parts at all. It is razor sharp too! I’m blown away for $19 bucks! It is listed online for $50 on the CRKT website. I love love love this Knife!! This knife is such high quality I’m trying to figure how they do it.. what a deal! People go buy a CRKT m16! Quality is amazing! Fit and finish is unbelievable for the money! I would think this knife would cost $99 bucks easy! It feels great in the hand.
The first knife I bought for myself was the m16 you described. I unfortunately broke the tip this past summer and was considering this knife as an upgrade. Thanks for the review.
I've had M16 & M21 for years and don't have a problem with the auto LAWKS safety. Like this knife with a frame lock just wish they at least would use CTS-BD1 steel. I'll probably be getting one of these knives in the near future though.
I have a Gerber Propel AO in S30V but I prefer the CRKT M16 for EDC. So slim and light that it almost becomes lost on that inseam of my pocket. I paired it with the microstream and I'm happy with the combo.
You do know that for around $20, you can get an M16-01S that's a frame lock, auto-lawksless, 8Cr13mov blade with a reversible pocket clip? The main differences in this model is the steel and a 4-way pocket clip rather than 2-way. Is that really worth the extra $20 when I can get a M21-02G for $38 in AUS-8?
My first real knife was the original M16 -1* and it does not have a safety lock. I own six M-16s and they’ve always been and still are the best knife for the money. I didn’t like the safety lock at first but I’ve gotten used to it on my new ones. Currently carry a M16-14ZSF or M16-13SF. Which I like because of the full hand guards. The safety lock turns them into bullet proof fixed blades. Amazing knives. PS -The only way you could improve on them would be to take away the serrations. Never understood why they were so invested in those. They are great on rope but hard to sharpen. Also if you don’t like the safety lock, you can take it off fairly easy.
Whoa!!! i have the first, old model with the manual locks, its been sitting in a drawer for years, this actually makes me want to get one! i do have to say i liked the added security of having a secondary lock on it though.
Funny. I was just thinking about whether or not the original m-16 was still competitive in today’s budget blade market (which is absolutely cutthroat these days). Like you, it was the first “glass case” knives I bought as a kid, and I’ll always have a soft spot for them. But the knife was DESPERATELY in need of an update
I have the o3s m16 spearpoint just polished the bead blast off it now love it even better..its my favorite EDC...tough knives I'm confident if I needed it for self defense
Just ordered one of these though I am disappointed that it no longer has the secondary lock. I carry a Ryan everyday & I actually really like the secondary lock. Frame locks can to easily disengage during hard use. That secondary lock essentially turns a folder into a fixed blade. IMO, not having that secondary lock is really a step backwards, NOT an improvement. I like the pocket clip position options so that I can carry right/left, tip up, or tip down. My Ryan will remain my primary EDC. This one will be my alternate.
I have the original version of this knife it is a great knife does still have the frame lock and I bought it at 14 years old and I’m thinking about getting the newer version
I agree on that lock release, especially with gloves. I’ve had the M21 14SFG for about 8 years, which I ordered when I was deployed to Afghanistan. The knife was awesome, but that lock release (especially with the double release) was a bit of a pain while wearing tactical gloves. Great knives though, I’m a huge fan of CRKT!!
@@johnw9177 I picked the M16-04KS for my EDC because it is smooth sided and won't wear a hole in my slacks. I have the M16-14ZLEK in my EDC/Tactical bag.

Personally I like the liner locks they have now but with both frame locks and liner locks and 50 different sizes to choose from there is an M16 for everyone.
My only problem I’ve had with crkt Is pocket clips, My squids is bent to hell because it would always catch on the steering wheel of my truck when getting out

Great knife. Dont care if the blade isnt s30 d2 or whatever else. It's fine for the price. It does what I need it to do out in the field and that's all that matters to me. Sometimes i have to sharpen the knife which doesnt bother me.
S30V for this price would be insane! Whether D2 is better than 12c27 or 14c28 is up for debate. Personally I prefer the higher rust-resistance on the sandvik steels and it's also easier to maintain a fine edge on it.
I am waiting to see if the few still hanging on the hook at my local store marks them down, but I did buy the Gerber Evo (Hey $10 with sharpener) which is their version or knock off if you prefer. Would like it as a framelock better, so I'll wait for the new model. I own liner locks, they're okay, but prefer framelocks like the Schrade schf311.
I got this same knife but in the tanto blade. High quality 8cr13mov blade, light weight and durable scales, easy manual opener with flipper or thumb studs, and a positive frame lockup. Blade centering is as good as it gets. One problem. A very big one for me, at least. The frame is small. It disappears in my hand. I feel the knife is going to get away from me. I've actually cut myself with it. I'd love to love it but the M16 is not for me. It's been assigned to the garbage tote. No offense to anyone who appreciates this knife.
Loved the handle to the m16 but the AUS-8 blade couldn’t hold an edge for shit no idea what they did with it because my SOGs would hold up much better with AUS-8 steel.
I like the version you have but think I would rather have it without the black oxide coating. What kind of jacket wearing here? Nice! Doesn't this model have a stainless steel handle?

Wow...That was my first (real) pocket knife purchase as a police officer. The safety was the main reason I ditched it for a Spyderco Paramilitary.
