- One of the bloodiest battles in the history of humankind was fought out on the hills in Northern France. Verdun was a tactical and symbolical city with great value to France. In 1916, the German army launched a massive attack, accompanied by a tremendous artillery bombardment, upon which the French defenders put their foot down, stating that 'on ne passe pas!', they shall not pass.

Need a TARDIS!!! July is not coming soon enough
Cool! Why hasn't this video been released to the public yet and will you be doing more episodes on songs from the upcoming album?
Sabaton History finally they are making a song about Verdun to fill in a gap in their Music about World War I
I'm hoping you covered more than just the land war in Europe on the album, I want a song about Jutland.
Really hoping a song about vimmy ridge

Hearing Indy say "Erich von Falkenhayn" and "Ludendorff" again is bliss.
All that's missing is a song about Konrad von Hotzendorf and Cadorna's XXVIIth Battle of the Isonzo river.

Indy probably has all the Verdun information memorized to the point he could repeat it all verbatim with no script nor mistakes
@@indiananeidell9186 what a great presentation about the battle, at this point, we undoubtedtly reached the limit of what human being could endure
@@mikestauffer7033 what happened to Indy's comment?
What's serendipitous about the way you say that is that French students have to take an oral exam to pass the Baccalaureate which is something of an advanced high school diploma. It's done in select subjects, including history.
So, there are many French people out there who can *verbatim* recite the history of Verdun no script nor mistakes, and this is a seminal aspect of French society. Appropriate for Verdun
My grand grand father fought in the French army from the beginning to the end of WW1, in Verdun he had the gruesome task to go retrieve and carry wounded soldiers back to our lines, one day he pulled a soldier stuck under a plie of mud by the legs, but only the leg came out as the poor man had been cut in two by an artillery shell. Years after the war he told my grandfather, his son in law, in a letter he wrote him : "I am looking forward to you coming back during your next leave (my grandfather was then fighting in the Algeria War), even though you will again complan that Algeria is worst than the Great War." The irony is that since the postal service was very bad during the Algeria War soldiers would get their letters in batches, sometimes receiving fresh letters at the same time as weeks old one. In the batch containing this letter my grandfather also received one annoncing him the death of my grand grandffather due to a lung disease he suffered because of exposition to combat gaz.
"The Symphony of the Devil" sounds like a song about artillery that Sabaton just has to write. Maybe they already have....
I think their song Stalingrad uses the phrase a few times
@@TheFarSideNoob ♪We're playing the devil's symphony
Our violins are guns conducted from hell♫
Thought the same thing
I've been to Verdun once, nature is slowly coming back but you can still see the scars on the landscape from the war.
It's truly a powerful place to see knowing how many people lost their lives there and what nightmares have occured there.
That Dude Hey, never been to Verdun but living in flanders battlefields of ww1 are everywhere. My hometown was 20km from the frontlines. Did you know the verdun veterans protested a lot when the french government decided to plant trees in the 1930's ? The veterans wanted to keep these 30km square like they were in 1918 : barren, sterile, grey, burnt. It shocked them to plant trees, as if their nightmares meant nothing. I don't know if we should have kept it barren and burnt. But these shell holes make my guts melt and my feet shake.
@@ansfelt8154
I didn't know that, thank you.
I can definitely understand the veterans wishes. Keeping a memorial so people will never forget what humans are capable of when it's do-or-die. It's just a lot more powerful to see a landscape ravaged by war 100 years ago than a memorial built in honor of past events.
Respecting this wish, at least to me, feels like the right thing to do, as they were giving their lives there, living through hell everyday.
But I don't know the reasoning from the french government, so I can only say what would've been right in my eyes.
I've seen trees while passing through the area, but I can't say if those are trees the government planted or if they naturally grew in the area.
@@rachelinga What did they say when you said those rolling hills were all shell craters?

If April 19th is when the album pre-order starts, it makes total sense.
Philippe Pétain in 1916 : YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!
Philippe Pétain in 1940 : Ok you can pass.
Petain was incredible during WWI but during WWII, he was 84 years old, he was too old to do something, the brits were retreating to UK, the french were alone, they lost their tanks, their planes, their hope, he didn't had many choices. But thanks god, we had Charles de Gaulle to continue the war.

It is my greatest misfortune to most humbly remind you that Tolkien was British, and this song... discusses France.
@@seand.g423Tolkien was a ground soldier in the Battle of the Somme, though.
@@Tacktix Okay, fair. His background, I'd argue he should have been a Chaplain's aide or something, but fair.
@@Tacktix I am quite certain that this phrase was on his mind when he wrote that in The Lord of the Rings. haven't been able to verify that though.
Gandalf yelling "You Shall Not Pass" at the balroc in Lord of the Rings carries a different connotation when you know this. Since J. R. R. Tolkien was in WWI
I have 2 of my great-grand fathers served at Verdun. One was born at Dun-sur-Meuse and the german trench was on his native farm! But he and his fellow french soldiers hold the line... They shall not pass!

When Indy talks about Sabaton will go in Verdun I was laughing because it's a secret but in France I saw a website who tells that Sabaton comes to Verdun between (Deleted data). =3

I really hope they go over the song 'Uprising' as the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began on April 19th 1943.
Also dont forget to put a mark to May the 3rd because this is the date where the song Fields of Verdun finally comes out
The treaty of Verdun of 843 was the birthdate and place of both Germany and France as two seperate entities. Thus the huge symbolic meaning for both side.

I want to clarify the important role that my great great grandfather, General de Castelnau, played in Verdun. He organized the defense when the general staff absolutely did not believe in an attack in Verdun, made it possible to contain the Germans, and thereafter, named Petain in Verdun. Let's not forget him !

Aaaaand I'm sold. I want the album right now.
So Nivelle was the OG Gandalf? You shall not pass!!! Anyway, I'm a simple guy: I just love learning about history and listening to Sabaton.
Tolkien did fight in ww1, it is entirely possible he took that from this man.
I'm amazed that Indy can still speak so passionately about Verdun.
Verdun is the first French-themed song for Sabaton, pretty sure.
0 dislikes sabaton brings everyone together with great music and history!
The more other Sabaton fans I meet the stronger my feeling is that Sabaton has the best fanbase in the world.
People have a sense of humor, people complete each other's lyric comments, we have live performance traditions of our own, and no one will even dare make fun of this fanbase with all the camo pants, combat boots and tank replicas while chanting military lyrics together xD
I learn more here than at school, I swear.
So much happened in the great war. From Lawrence of Arabia's antics to the Russian Civil War to Austrians in the Alps to the Barons of the Sky. So much can be on this new album. Very excited.
I am french. My generation is the first to go without veterans from ww1 (I was born in 1999). However, if you bring up a conversation about the first world war, most people do not know anything about it EXCEPT that their great grand father or great great grand father fought in Verdun. Every single family in France, including those from the old colonies in North Africa have an ancestor who fought in Verdun. People from all across the country, but also colonial troops from Algeria, Morroco, Tunisia, Senegal ... Verdun echoes to the memory of 68 million french citizen. It's not only the bloodiest battle of our history, it's the first battle in our History that brought us all equal under arms as a citizen army. And this, my friend, mean that our 1789 Revolution was not meant for nothing. We won a war against an imperial dictatorship. Vive la République, vive la France !
From the sadly still monarchist Spain: No Pasarán!
"They will not pass!"
Gandalf would be so proud about Nivelle... :D
Considering Tolkien fought at the Somme he probably heard about that at some point and used it as inspiration.
Nivelle is proud about Gandalf

Frankly it's weird they've made so many songs about military history and they've not touched Napoleon. Dude probably deserves a whole album by himself. He fought more battles than any other general in history and won almost all of them. He's a legend that probably even dwarfs the likes of Julius Caesar and change the world forever. Hopefully they get around to that one day.
