I buy these plants every year but didn't know you could harvest the seeds for the next year. I'm going to try this! Thank you for explaining it so well.
Last year when my celosias started to produce seeds i saw your video and i harvested the seeds. This year i planted some and already got my first seedling! Thank you for this very informative video. Great method.
Well my friend, once again I found you via a google search. Twice in 3 months! Dang. Thanks for sharing. Was looking for this information with reason. Thanks my friend.👍
This video was very helpful for me as we have just planted several plants around the front of our church and was wondering about how / where the seeds were. Looking forward to more of your helpful videos.
Im new to gardening and this is my first year to grow this beautiful flower! And man did it show off. I was hoping to save some seeds from it but didn’t know how. Your video was so informative and helpful, thank you! I’ll let mine dry a little longer and then follow your process. Thanks for sharing 💚🌱
Oh, that was wonderful. Just what I was looking for. Thank you so very much 💚 I only discovered this beautiful flower 🌸 2 months ago. I'm so in love with them. Again, thank you 💕🌿
Thank you for the help with this wonderful video this year gone all out bying plants and all omg lol so this is the best way to get any help is just getting the on the youtube hehehe so happy for RUclips remarkable hehehe so yes the flowers are soooi beeeauuutiful xoxoxo
I am so playing video bounce around catchup right now and almost missed this one. This plant is really interesting to us as an ornamental(smaller space) alternative to Amaranth. Amaranth is probably one of the top five plants I would recommend everyone should grow for a must sustain situation. Good info. Thanks for the share!
loves your video!!! you speak very clear!! great quality video!!! thank you for your time!! this will forever be my fav flower, because my granny loves them!! so now i hope i can give her some plants next year!!
Thank you very much Katie! That will be awesome if you can surprise her with some plants next year. I also have a flower that a grow because of my grandmother.
Lol, yep, I don't know how many times that I've been asked if this flower or that flower is edible. Actually people in Africa do eat the Celosia plant, but I have no idea about the seeds, so I thought I would just throw that out there in case anyone was confused by my choice of words. Thanks a ton for watching, and I hope that you and your family had a great Thanksgiving!
That's something that I've never tried. It doesn't surprise me that it would work though. Many plants can be started that way. You might have to do a little experimenting.
My celosia plants were doing awesome. I went away for a weekend and forgot to ask the neighbors to water for me. It's been a hot summer. When I came home they looked dead. I harvested the plants. They are drying now. Will I get any viable seeds?
It depends on when you planted them. If they are full grown plants, you could probably get some seeds. I can't say for sure though. It's worth trying though.
Just saved me some this fall from a friends garden, never thought to use a strainer but very good idea for next time. Do the seeds produce the same color flower they were saved from? I saved from 3 different colors and labeled as such assuming this would be the case. Thanks for the vid.
Glad to hear you got some free seeds. It's hard to beat that. As far as color, like most flowers, there is probably an order of dominance, so it all depends on which color is dominant and where the pollen came from that pollinated the flowers. By labeling them, you have a very nice little experiment in the works. That will be interesting to see if one color or another dominates, or if they all will breed true to color. My guess is that one or more of the colors will end up producing more than one color of flower.
hi this is very nice video, i got small celosia flower but i wonder how do i know is the seeds is ready to be harvest? do i need to wait for the flower to dry at the point it turn dry/brown? is it okay if i pluck the seeds/not whole flower if i see the seeds already?
Thanks! Sure, you can remove any seeds that you can see. The drier the flower is, the easier the seeds are to remove. But if you wait too long, some of them will fall out on the ground. I usually wait until the flowers are faded looking and starting to dry a little bit.
Seems like I read somewhere that there was one variety of them that germinates better if chilled for 4 or 5 days, but for the most part, they don't require it.
@@MidwestGardener hi do today I tried to shake the flowers to get seeds but I saw small insects do I decided to check the plant snd it’s stem was all fragile and brown and seemed like rotten so I cut the entire stem and I do know if the stem will grow again? Can I completely remove that dead stem because it’s hollow from inside so I don’t know if it grows?
This seems like a lot of work to get rid of the little bitty bits of chaff. I have stored various seeds for several years at a time leaving some of the chaff in the bags. Does the chaff interfere with germination rates? Because if it doesn't, I am not inclined to be so fussy about getting out all of the chaff. (I am not selling the seed, so I don't have to worry about cheating anyone by weight or volume). Your thoughts?
Thanks, hopefully I get a ton of seeds,I have 4 celosia plants and really want to outline my house with dragons breaths, love dragons breath, and want to use them to predominantly be a border outliner too, definitely better and safer than barberris plants
Midwest Gardener I bought some more plants this year so I will keep an eye on them this time. I’d like to get some seeds from a couple flowering varieties but the fern type is the only one available here in BC that I have seen at the garden stores. We should start up a seed sharing platform.
Yes, some areas can have limited availability for some plants. I think there are probably already some seed sharing sites out there. I don't exchange seeds very often.
Midwest Gardener well couldn’t hurt to start. I know I couldn’t possibly use a 1000 seeds so why not give to those that don’t have? I would only ask that the folks pay the postage. I’m all about helping people but that’s just me.
Yep, that's a great attitude. I get so many requests though, that I couldn't keep up if I sent out seeds every time people asked. We share a lot of produce most year with the local food bank, but this year will be a little different.
Great simple method. We are saving our celosia seeds for the first time this year and this is super helpful. :)
Thanks! Glad I could help!

Thanks so much for teaching me this lesson.

Thank you, great demonstration.

Thanks for the great tips.could you please tell me if you plant your seeds directly in the ground or in pots first.
I plant directly in the ground with these....usually.

How do you store in the plastic bags to keep dry
If the seeds are thoroughly dry before you put them in bags, they should stay dry. If you are worried about it, store in paper envelopes.
Is it imperative to let plant go through a frost or can you just pick and allow to dry?
Thanks.
Awesome! Thank you!!
You're welcome Brenna!
Question: after the flower dry and pickup the seeds. Do I need to wait in some month to planted. Thanks
When you plant them depends on what zone you are in. You should wait till all danger of frost is over.
Thanks for your answer🙏

How old are the plants from which seeds are extracted?
I planted the seeds in the spring, and harvested from the plants in the fall. I don't know what you mean by which seeds are extracted.

How long to wait because my Fresh red Celsius it’s color has faded snd it’s been a week but I tried this method but I didn’t see any seeds
I would just try every couple of weeks until you see some mature seeds. You can just take off a small part of the flower head.

My main question is they are in the amaranth family and amaranth can be used as a grain. Can these be as well??
Sorry, but I just don't know the answer to that question. I only use them for flowers.

I have never tested it, but I doubt if the chaff hurts germination much, if at all. As long as you don't mind it, I wouldn't bother.
Hi, will it spread on its own because the seeds will fall to the ground and a new celosia plant will emerge before it dies?
Yes, sometimes some of the seeds will sprout after they fall to the ground. Usually it is the next spring.

Tried this last year but I think I waited to long to harvest them. Most if the pods were empty so I assume they just pop out ?
