As a native Angelena, I feel like we complain about LAX a lot, but it's really not as bad as it could be and as it is at other airports. Don't get me started w/ Newark, I've only been there once and I experienced firsthand their crappy reputation. I returned from a study abroad semester in Europe four years ago and went to Newark for a layover under a tight schedule. The infrastructure was SO bad that not only those unprofessional idiots made me run in circles nor sent me to the check-in route where people would start their journey in lieu of a separate one for layover travelers, but also made me lose my flight and things verbally escalated a bit with security. Moral of the story: Avoid airports with crappy reputations for layover routes, especially under a tight schedule!

Eindhoven airport (NL) is only used by holiday charters and low-cost airlines (i.e. Ryanair, Transavia, Wizz, TUI, Corendon, Sunexpress). That reflects on the clientèle and the offered service. My only nightmarish experience was at Madrid Airport. Hope to never set foot again there.
Spent a whole day inside this airport, and more than one hour inside the airplane while connecting to Lisbon. Provided no information at all regarding the flight delay, huge rows to check in your luggage, very bad information or even lack of it, as this airport is so huge that I almost got lost inside.

      @henkwilliemadriannusvander1955 3 года назад +1

Agreed. I had a bad experience at Madrid Baraja as well. Delayed flight is not an airport fault, but at least the staff should be more considerate towards the passangers stuck in waiting.
The airport was packed, there were no seats available so I sat myself on the floor. I was about to doze off when a guard came and woke me up with his foot. He literally kicked my legs and asked me to show him my ticket. He can’t speak a word of English for which I found surprising for a person guarding one of the entrances to the country. I had to explain my predicament to him in my pidgin Spanish.
He finally left me alone and, to my horror, captured a bird seeking shelter from the rain and, with a few of his friends, proceeded to torture the bird by pulling its feathers off.
Another bad experience was at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome. A custom officer dropped and broke my video camera while inspecting my bag and he just acted as if nothing happened.
      Never again.

1:34 can confirm. It's great to watch from the turnpike; but customs is really where it falls apart. In 2018 I was on a delayed flight from Zürich to Newark that landed at 12:15am due to a technical fault in Zürich. Still took an hour and a half to process a more than half empty A330-200 and IT WAS THE ONLY FLIGHT ARRIVING AT THAT TIME IN THE ENTIRE AIRPORT.
There were like 100 to 110 passengers and five queues, three of which were for US citizens like me. Then our baggage didn't get to the carousel until 2:30am.
If you're flying Star Alliance, do not connect through Newark without a minimum layover of three to four hours. It's one of United Airlines's hubs, because you have to go through US Customs before you can go to your connecting flight no matter your final destination and that can take literally hours. Okay rant over, thank you for reading my Ted Talk.

I've been through Hong Kong Airport plenty of times and I've never had any issues with it. It's clean, it's safe, it's comfortable enough, their WiFi is alright, and they have do some cheap food options. I think the problem is that it's Hong Kong and there are a lot of demanding rich people and business people going through there all the time.
By far, the absolute WORST airport experience I've ever had in my life was my layover at Ninoy Aquino Airport in Manila. Absolutely the WORST. Security checks every 5 steps, rude workers and security guards, the terminals make no freaking sense, there are no freakin exits out of the airport except for ONE door, we had to LEAVE the airport and take taxi halfway around the city just to end up at the same airport to transfer to Terrminal 4 Domestic flights, it was the most ridiculously bad airport ever.
#2 would be the Houston International Airport. SO disorganized. My family and I missed our connecting flights, even though we had a 4-hour layover, because the lines at immigration were so freaking long. And the reason for the long lines wasn't that there was an enormous amount of people. It was that they only had like 2 customs workers, so there were only 2 lines to process all of the arrivals.

My only Nightmare-like Experience was in TXL Terminal C, first of all we waited 1h in the non-schengen Passport Control, with the Staff very rude. When we were flying out of TXL, the Staff were rude, NO SHOPS OPEN, people were sitting On The floor, and we needed to walk the whole terminal to get to the gate, they only opened Gate Area 1h 30m before the flight departed, and like 300 people were stuck in this little area. Once the gate opened, they made Us go wait outside in a wee space with a leaking roof! After 25mins of waiting in this little room, they told Us to Go in the plane. Both these experiences happened in TXL Terminal C, Never flown back to TXL.

Theft, poor sanitation, delays, air traffic, poor and unsecured wifi, pollution, extortion, long queues, traffic and bad food all check! I am surprised to see HKG, as in my eyes, its a pretty clean and efficient airport. On the list belongs, however, NAIA Manila. once even portions of the ceiling in Terminal 1 DID come down, and to travel between terminals, the so-called shuttles need to go out on the busy roads around the airport. Loved ones cannot see you off or welcome you in the terminals, waiting is obnoxious, and quality of services and foods are rock bottom. A horror experience. If possible, choose Cebu Mactan Int. Airport, smaller, and much, much better

The worst airport is by far Franc List 2 in Budapest. When leaving the country, we suffered the worst possible mistreatment and chauvinism, when the employee recognized that we were from Serbia, she waited for my wife to put the things in the container, ran up while the things were moving, and ordered her to take off the new shoes and put them in the new the dish. She said that it was a thick platform and that there could be a bomb there. We were in shock and didn't have time to react. It was good that we didn't react, they already had an arrest ready. My wife ran 60 meters to the other end and I brought her shoes. Three meters away from us was another employee who watched us closely while we were looking for clean socks to wear over the dirty ones so as not to ruin our new shoes. I will mention that it could only fit a smaller box of matches, 4.5cm x 3cm x 1cm, maybe 5 grams of explosives. Of course, the only sin was that we were from Serbia, which the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy attacked in the First World War and killed 28 percent of the entire population, women and children, and 62 percent of that was the male population. When my wife was getting up, an aggressive hand with a belt appeared and pushed me away and closed access to the chair. Then we escaped the second arrest. That second employee was informed by the first that we are from Serbia. We passed through the fenced area, the belt closed behind us. there was only one passenger in front of us who was examined at passport control in 10 seconds. When it was our turn, the officer was checking something for 4 minutes. Since I am extremely tall, he knew that I was from Serbia. After 4 minutes, when he saw what we were doing, that we didn't have any crime, that we weren't criminally prosecuted and so on, he picked up the folded passports and handed them to the counter. I thanked him, and he looked at me with an endless expression of hatred and put the passports down. Then we felt fear. We were only in a large room. I pretended that everything was fine. I looked "disinterestedly" into the transparent glass, looking back I didn't see anyone behind us. After 8 minutes, since we didn't react, he picked up the passports again. There we avoided the third arrest, since we didn't react. We passed and arrived at our gate, where there were only two other passengers. we logged in to the internet, using our names as they ask for at the airport, and we were there for about 10 minutes. Then the system crashed. we tried to log in again. They kept asking us to log in again. At the gate next to ours, everyone was on the Internet without any problems. We realized that they were making fun of us since they turned off our bus after they found our names and that we shouldn't complain otherwise... the moment we got off the gate there were three of us on the bus. Suddenly after 2 minutes, another 67 Hungarians got off. The bus started quickly, arrived at the ATR-72 plane, we quickly got on board in 5 minutes, and in 5 minutes with the safety procedure, quickly left the runway, quickly took off, so as not to be late, while changing the engine three times sound on takeoff and that was it. The stewardess told us that the plane had been waiting on the runway for 40 minutes without any reason and that they didn't understand anything.
What we experienced as Serbs, oh chauvinism, was nothing compared to what the Jews who returned to Jerusalem experienced. Namely, they were in the part of the airport 80 meters apart from the other counters in the part for special harassment. There were closed passages, with strong police forces and a police dog. And there was only a big queue. Until 1944, the population of Budapest had about 23 percent Jewish population, during 3 months, 560 thousand Jews were killed under the chain bridge on the Danube, and most of them were taken to the Auschwitz camp, where they were mostly killed within a few days. That is why they return to their holy places every year, and the Hungarians remind them when they leave that they have nothing to look for in Hungary. So. In its roots, Hungary still lives under the spirit of Nazism and chauvinism. But not everything is so black, says terminal 2a, where their proven friends Lufthansa and others, as well as private planes, have a completely different treatment.

How did Edinburgh make the list of worst airports but not London Heathrow? Edinburgh isn't a bad airport. It's no worse than most regional American airports. I've been through Edinburgh many times. Since it's a small airport, immigration lines aren't that long and you don't have to walk 2 miles to baggage claim. The drop-off fee is a bit annoying for friends and family, but it does reduce congestion and encourages people to take one of the many excellent public transportation options to the airport. Despite the small size, I don't think I have ever had a delay of longer than 30 minutes in Edinburgh. None of which can be said for Heathrow. Getting from one terminal to another is a nightmare. BA is one of the most disorganized and uncaring airlines in the world. No amount of connection time is enough to feel comfortable. I could have a four hour connection time in Heathrow and still feel nervous.

Why Newark/EWR? I don't need all those shops and stuff. But you have NJ Transit running trains to NYC penn station - 21 minute ride. That is top! And this is what you need as traveller.
And from arrival via NJ Transit and Airtrain Newark I never needed more than 30 minutes through security until reaching the gate. Do this at JFK...

Just shows how inaccurate you can be if you base a ranking on feedback comments on websites rather than on objective criteria and site visits. None of this airports qualify to be in the 10 worst in the world. If we are restricting the ranking to large airports in highly developed nations, the ‘worst’ list would probably be dominated by airports in the US.

Two airports I hope I don't have to visit again are Shanghai Pudong and Kathmandu. I only traveled through Shanghai Pudong 3 times, and twice I experienced delays. Kathmandu seemed to be on time, but it was the dirtiest airport I have ever been to. Everything was wet in the bathroom and there was no hook to keep my bag off the floor. It was either put my backpack on a wet floor of a toilet stall or wait until I got to my destination. I didn't have to go badly enough to put my bag on that nasty floor.

Dunno about the worst but best is Cairo airport. Landed there around 1am. No custom, no security check, just one guy stopped because to put arrival stamp on my passport. When I started walking towards exit gate, asked random guy (he was smoking btw). "Hello sir, where is the reception area? Need to make a call." He replied "I'm the reception, here is my cell phone."
