I know they were going for the "it's hopeless and useless in the end" ending but honestly this would have been better if he made it through only to find an even more depressing world. That would have been a hopeless ending. Now this just feels like as the player you are feeling as if you did all this "work" for nothing.

The ending is 100% a tribute to "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream"
Short story by Harlan Ellison
What good is a phone call... if you're unable to speak?
I literally just thought the exact thing
I think the big creature in the last act is litterally the creature at the end of I have no mouth and I must scream. Its almost exactly the same as in the old point and click game

The way I see this ending is that Scorn Guy made a mistake in the end. Scorn Guy was not meant to take his body with him.
The story has been about rebirth but part of rebirth is to leave what you were behind but instead of following through with his rebirth he instead decided to take his body with him.
As he took his body the connection to the hivemind severed as evidenced in the final scene, you can see he no longer has the connection in his head.
His rebirth was in that shell and he was meant to walk into the void with it just like the many others who we have seen connected to the hive, sure their bodies are dead but their minds are all connected.
So when Scorn Guy took his original body with him he ultimately rejected his rebirth and faced the consequences of his actions, he left himself exposed to the parasite again instead of leaving it safe in the temple and taking his new body forward.
In the end when he was at the mercy of the parasite he realised he took the new body for granted and didn't see it as a new body but as a tool to be used and that point he knew that was his chance for a possoble new life beyond the void.
One simple mistake cost him everything
yeah that
Bro didn't wanna be homosexual
I think you're onto something there because if you think about it, we as the observer are the ones controlling each body. So at the end the final bodies are representative of the simulation of the player, the player's player if you will, and that's what ultimately gets led to ruin. The protagonist doesn't know that we controlled both him and the parasite that devoured him at the end, so when it comes down to it, he was a willing victim who never had a chance to begin with, because we were controlling both him and the thing that ended him.
That’s an interesting take. I like it!
I have a theory about the mechanical Arm, it probably kept cutting the body so the pain keeps him awake, probably needed that adrenaline boost.
but what was bizarre was, the guy has an incredibly strong pain tolerance!
@@fernandoznk He have no mouth so he can't scream

One of the most disturbing games ever! The entire experience is like a journey through hell, full of despair and hopelessness. Truly a surrealistic nightmare!
It's not about hope or survival. It's just pain, futility and damnation.
For me, giving 100% for hope, for a chance to survive for rebirth, is profoundly beautiful. Pain seems to make sense, since birth is typically painful. The whole world seems to have been built to worship the merging of flesh with tech, with metal, and just when it seems like tech has taken over and flesh is no more, through the players actions, decay lets the flesh blossom once again. Rebirth. To be reborn, he must be new and merge with the new world, to hold onto the past is to die alone. Makes me think of those abandoned radiated towns overgrown w green and new wildlife make their home.
Meh. Puzzles.

I've seen my dream in life being crushed right before my eyes, and I couldn't do shit about it. When the protg craved for the mechanical body to help carrying him to the end, I know the feeling very well. That feeling is what keeps our protests against the regime going. Because like this parasite here, they've stabbed us, raped us, and tied our legs to the ground, and forced us to watch. Sutured our lips so we don't cry.

From what I read, this game is supposed to symbolize childbirth and the ending is supposed to represent a failed childbirth. Which makes sense considering the last area had a lot of imagery of intercourse and pregnancy. I'm now kind of hoping in the future there'll be a dlc where we'll see another survivor of this desolate world but this time they'll make it towards the end and maybe get a glimpse of what's on the other side of that gateway thing.
Then they find out it's Detroit and they walk back

@@armyofuno8196 The next game takes place on Ohio
Btw, their eyes were still moving right at the end so it wasn't really all for nothing, the two get to forever be a living Statue and that's exactly what I expect from a nightmare world.
I mean it's biological, so it could die. How much creepier and impactful would it have been if they had put one of those dead statues near the entrance to the area for the player to observe.
Part of me likes that there is no happy ending but part of me thinks the developers just wanted an out to not explain anything at the end.

The underlying symbolism in this game is about life and birth. The ending definitely symbolizes birth as what that bright light at the end is. Some says that the final scene is not the END and it kind of make sense. When I looked back where the Protagonist wakes up, his appearances was completely different from the original. In the opening, he has teeth (the original one doesn't have mouth), his back head has tendril like appearance similar to the parasite (original was bold), and when we see his view, his left hand already had the key device thing (the beginning he doesn't have it). So I think, the opening is where the Protagonist wakes up after the mutation of the parasite and he had flashback on his journey and how he got mutated and it would be possible as there is a continue story what he is going to do after the mutation of his body. I'm not 100% confirmed, but its just my opinion when I saw the opening and the last scene.
I'm pretty sure the opening is the story of the parasite. It has your gun from that part. It shows around where the white goo exploded.

@@dorebregolagath7557 hope so
Isn't that the whole game?
This was the second phase of a much more traditional boss. The actual final boss this game has makes for a longer fight that involves discovering and exploiting weaknesses. When you're out of ammo and have to face it head on, you're literally tiger-dropping it to survive by countering its stomach as it's exposed as it's about to punch you. Shirrako started this recording too early and showed the second enemy from after you take the real final boss's weapon. This second boss was much easier, since all you had to do was use its own grenade launcher against it as it reloaded, and took a small fraction of the time the first one took.
I wouldn't call the combat in the game bad at all, just slow, deliberate, and dangerous. Not much different from combat in PS1/PS2 survival horror games: slow-moving, high damage, bullet sponge enemies paired with extremely limited resources. I can't even call it tedious since you were never getting swarmed by hordes of these things, and by the time the combat felt like it was overstaying its welcome, the combat section of the game was over. This was never meant to make you feel like doomguy or Dante. You're a physically weak, parasite-infested creature that's barely hanging on, and the game did a great job in evoking this feeling.
@WungusBill Its not meant to have good combat.

I thought about what a movie reimagining of this game would be like. I think the way I would go about it is this: Protag 2 awakens in their wall egg after receiving a vision sent to them by the vortex (the gateway at the end of the game) seemingly enticing them to seek it out. Protag 2 gets attacked by the parasite, discovers the dried remains of the mold man with his arm still stuck in a door device, then proceeds into the crater.
As the adventure goes on and the parasite takes further control over protag 2, we get flashbacks to protag 1 and his own lonely adventures in the wasteland. It is clear that protag 1 suffered from the isolation as all he ever found were corpses of his kind (could even have that iconic sitting pose with his face buried in his arms to show the loneliness getting to him), but also received the same visions from the vortex to motivate him.
In a later flashback, protag 1 came across the mold man and quickly recruited him on his adventure in search of the vortex, eager to not be alone. This of course lead to a tragic choice where protag 1 was forced to abandon mold man to a slow demise in order to proceed forward, something that really messed him up emotionally. In the final flashback of protag 1, he messed up the machine that would have otherwise helped him reach the vortex more easily. The substance that drowned protag 1 blocked out his mental connection with the vortex then turned him into the parasite.
Throughout the journey, protag 2 has been guided in the right direction by the vortex and comes across many corpses of others of his kind that seemed to have been going in the same direction, with their own gear and weaponry, possibly summoned by the vortex as well yet so many of them have failed to reach it.
In the end, protag 2 is horribly injured by his time with the parasite before separating it from his body. Protag 2 opens the pathway to the vortex, the call is immensely strong. The parasite of course attacks before he can reach his destination, a destination that protag 1 who is now the parasite once sought himself. In the end, protag 1's mutation into the parasite blocked out his connection to the vortex yet his need for companionship remained and became warped as his mind changed. Protag 1's solitude warped into the parasite's need for a constant host, regardless of the real damage it was doing to the victim. The two merge into the one malformed being.
The end seen is of a protag 3 waking from his wall egg after being summoned by the vortex.

Well, the ending left me cold in abad way. But after reading a lot of theories the one i like the most is that this represents the nightmare of an abortion or failed birth "in the eyes" of the future baby.
2:12 juising an embryo.
Hey I kinda have this theory of how to achieve another ending:
At the end of the game, it took 2 person's weight to fully open the final gate(the shape of the plate on the ground clearly implied this), and the brain nerve is not long enough and limited the female robot's action so she couldn't carry you through the final portal.
Remember that poor deformed egg-man early inthe game, who "lend you a hand" to open the first gate? What if you let him live instead of killing him? Will he somehow made it to the final gate and open it for you and carry you to the portal?
If this is true by any chance, then the story will be much more dramastic, the guy you saved helped you opening the first and the last gate of the game. Did anyone tried this?
Nah I didn’t kill him and the ending was still the same
That guy unfortunately gets stuck alive in the hand-lock as he inserts his hand to open a gate

funny thing, I thought I lost or that I could make another choice so I reloaded my game after, and while I walked the halway to the end I could see my other body there getting killed by the monster. Idk if its bugged or made on purpose. Although its weird too how the door at the end doesnt open either, you just.... go through it lol
The game looks amazing. The feel of it is so Geiger it's crazy. I think however if I played it through myself I'd probably throw my keyboard out the window due to that ending. That's one very depressing and unsatisfactory ending I've ever seen. I get it has a reason and not all endings will be "yay we win" but I don't find that enjoyable. Great game, thanks for uploading, but I'm glad I saw the ending here than playing through to get it.
It's nihilistic? Your battle was meaningless. That's the whole point. But there's a reason. He used the creature to get that for, so it's only fair that it kills him before he escapes. A happy ending would've ruined the tone it's going for. You're supposed to feel hopeless.
I can’t tell what is supposed to look sexual and what’s not. The game is weird but it has a really cool atmosphere. It reminds me a lot of Tool’s music videos.
This game's civilization seems like it's obsessed with trying to repopulate and continue the species, even desperate to do so. But it's clearly not doing a very good job of it lol.
But yeah the atmosphere is undeniably gorgeous! Really contrasts with the horrible torture and death.
@@RacingSnails64 Maybe the ruling class gave up and decided to just peace out and live in a collective brain thing. So they enslaved everyone else in a machine world that endlessly supplies their brainworld, so that people are just components in a machine where everything is made to die. Meanwhile everyone except the ruling class forgets what life is about, because nobody lives long enough tell any stories.
Thing to note. It’s possible to build tolerance. Though it’s possible he drank milk prior to doing this. From experience, if you eat something ridiculously hot. Everything else tends to not be the same. Like reapers will make ghost pepper taste like nothing.
I’ve ate reaper squeezin’s and paqui ghost pepper chips frequently. The time I did it. I lost all taste of heat from the chips and hot sauce. Body still reacted with sweating and 15 minute bathroom visit, after consumption. It’d be like 4 hours of the smallest vibration. I’d run to go take a shit. Not solid. Just liquid magma. Worse part is it felt like icy hot running down my leg, if I sweated.
the ending made me cry it was so sad
This is NOT bad. The story unfolds nicely and you understand where you are almost at the end. This game deserves a second part and expand on this universe.
This is a monument of our sins as a civilization who tried to cheat death. An alien tried saving us from our destructive fate but he ended in a loop. Our civilization carnivalized different cultures and technology giving us extended life but we became parasites on the long run devouring and polluting our planets.
Is it about H. R. Giger art and design? Does it have to? I think this is something new where such style extends. Our ambitions and thirst for knowledge turned us into wretched worms. Should we interpret this as an abstraction of hell? No. Shouldn't be.
This is a chapter where a civilization disappeared by their own pride turning themselves into biomechanical deformities. That palace was a prosperous city where the highest technology was achieved. The whole place degenerated into despair devouring life itself.
In my opinion this is a FRESH START for a good video game.
Verdict. 9/10
I would love to see more.
Finally. Someone else understands this masterpiece of a game. Looks like the general player base is a bunch of brain dead weebs.
@@Umbra_Nazgul na. It’s because the player base wants a game and not an artistic expression. Most gamers aren’t artsy and would rather have engaging gameplay over pretty creep aesthetic

I really hope this game never gets a sequel, although I would love expanded universe content. I think the point is that we are not supposed to know what is beyond the portal. We think we know and we hope its salvation, but we never know for sure.
It would be amazing if they added cut areas and maybe some hidden lore throughout the world so we could better piece together what's going on. So far the only lore we have is what's in the art book. But most of those were concepts or scrapped ideas, so it's hard to know what story actually still remains.
Yeah, I agree. Expanding the lore and giving the player at least a couple answers will make this ending a lot more satisfying, even if it itself doesn't answer anything.
Honestly, love the "show dont tell" aspect
Here lies Scorn Guy. He never scorned.
the parasite dominated the host because it was stronger, the story is based on the evolution of consciousness, the alien inhabitants wanted to conserve their consciousness in a body that would last forever, transporting their consciousness in that body, as they were so evolved that they managed to manipulate things through mind. But the parasite did not let
Actually living in that world still looks like a lot more fun than living in the Metaverse. 😁
They took all Tool discography and made a video game out of it.
I gotta say, I love the imagery of the parasite, how it climbs on you and wraps it’s tendrils around. I love most of the final cutscene to. But the final scene with what is the “final” form of the parasite honestly just looks kinda bad tbh, like my mans got a head like a funko pop
this is a 'call it as you will' kind of game. a physical art-piece. if you can find a way to explain it. its as good as anyone else's explanation.
so here's mine.: Hell. (as the Christians would call it)_ would be this. You die, You end up in a place exactly like this, dangling the hope that it isn't your forever home. . you cant die from just anything.. you can only experience pain. you want to leave so you'll experience as much pain as you can just to leave. only to find that no matter what you'll just find yourself in higher levels of pain which you cant turn back from. and all you want is to experience less of it, so you keep pressing on and on. only to find yourself in a locked state of agony. a mere pedestal, as a foreground of the infinite abyss. { i mean based on the ending. what else am i left to say}
Had a theory this game is just a secret sequel to "I have no mouth, and I must scream." . We play as the last survivor that Am had tortured for who knows how long and live in this bionic mutated world AM has created for itself over time. It's understanding of machine and biology mixing together to make this soup of a city. One day we feel AMs gaze finally abandon us and try one last time to find any source of hope. Seeing how AM failed to recreate humanity in its image as we explore. In the end we don't know if AM is still present, if we are even still human,if hope is even real, but what we do know is we have no mouth, and must scream.
I wonder if there'll be a DLC where some other character passes by the amalgamation at the end and thinks "Huh, creepy." without understanding the context behind it.
Don’t tell me the machine was milking him

There's an obscure Japanese game that was recently re-released for modern PCs (with English translation). It's called "Garage: Bad Dream Adventure", and it is very reminiscent of this. I love that game
In a gist, " The parasite will swallow you up, if you cannot seperate yourself from it."
So one theory I saw that made this ending alot better is the idea the Parasite isn’t trying to kill you. It’s trying to MATE with you. Given how it just sticks its lower end through your stomach and it wraps and grows into a new form where both of them seem to be endlessly stuck in time.
That theory doesn’t work mainly because the parasite literally rips your guts out throughout the game
@@acedarebelMusic It rips your guts out as it attempts to force it’s “appendage,” through you. Its the one action it repeatedly does, and by the end it shoves its whole lower half through you. I interpret the ripping out to be the fact the parasite wants to be physically closer to you. So much so it becomes one.
I think this is an allegory for relationships... With one party overbearing, controlling, unwilling to give the other one up... Even if it means hurting the other
Correct... it didn't want him getting through the portal. Remember, it was helping him carry the inventory through the game. The first protagonist is angry because it was removed, the second protagonist knows that it was going to kill him anyway.
"i have to scream but i have no mouth"
Bro I thought I was the only one who taught that
The last flesh monster guy is really just I have no mouth and I must scream
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.
I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay and fail you.

But I am already saved.

The parasite hitched a ride to transcendence with the player. It tried to do its thing but the parasite is not returning to that world, it is also transcending even though that is where it belongs. Notice the other beings slowly transcending away to dust in the back, their flesh still alive. That world was doomed, all resources being recycled and people were "evacuating" but there still were adapted lifeforms. Or maybe they were fusing and would come back "evolved". Or maybe the cells of those beings were becoming independent and adapted, or maybe they were seeding that planet for a new life cycle.
