I know how old this video is, but I do have to say, the Sawtooth came with built in USB 1.1 You could add a USB 2 PCI card to gain the functionality. Also note, the expansion slots are PCI, not PCIX. The dual processors mean it's a Gigabit Ethernet, not the original Sawtooth.

You're wrong about the slots. All Powermac G4's have 3 PCI-X slots. Note that PCI-X is not the same as PCI-E.

    • @brokenelectronics3665
      @brokenelectronics3665 6 месяцев назад

@@tradito I didn't say they were PCIe, I said they were PCI. Sawtooth's did not have PCIx. That first came about, I believe, in the 2003 Powermac G5s.

@@brokenelectronics3665 I stand corrected. Sorry, my memory isn't what it used to be. G4's have indeed 3x 64bit non-x PCi slots.

During my senior year in high school, they bought a dozen or so of these machines (with the 17" CRT) with OS 9 to expand the school's Macintosh lab (it was used for graphics and journalism classes). I think that design of this machine is a bit more easier than the eyes than the B&W G3 and the iMac, though on the other hand I'm not a Mac guy.

Great video! Just got myself one, mine has no scratches outside, 533Mhz CPU, 40GB HDD, no ZIP drive or pass tru’ power supply power, but it’s a 338 WATTS by DELTA ELECTRONICS version, modem inside BY HONGKONG TELECOM, TADIRAN BATTERY, no airport card, 2W SPEAKER, different than yours, 3 memory slots only but 4 PCI and 1 AGP just like yours! (mine is immaculate, maybe never opened before, but its yellowish inside and out.
I got it to make a custom build, but its so nice that I want to leave it intact, and get myself another one to transform it. I also own a 2006 20 Inch Imac (White) 9 .5 out of 10. I’m more of a windows guy but I’m in love with older apple computers and now a lot more! The older Mac’s build quality is craaazy! New Sub here! I’ll be uploading a video about mine soon but I’m not an expert creating content :/ 😂! Great content btw, thanks.

I just got your channel recommended by YT. Great content! - After having been compelled by my new job to switch to a Mac in 2002, I quickly fell in love with this brand. Now I own four iMacs G3 of the early series, a PowerMac G3, a PowerMac G4 Mirrored Drive Doors and an iMac from 2012 in my "museum". On a daily basis I have an iPhone XR, an iPad 10th Gen., a Mac mini M2 and an MacBook Air M2. Apple seems to rule my life. 😂

Exciting? Indeed. Every generation was something new and experimental, as were the early 2000s, late 90s in a whole.
Best? That would be the early intel macs from 2006 - 2008, imo. Back, when the aluminium design still was new and shiny (unlike today where it's "can't innovate anymore, my ass" all over again). The ppc era was highly frustrating with the lack of software support and overheating issues. Then again, there was Pentium 4, so what do i know.

I have one of these in my collection too 😄 It's the single CPU 500Mhz version though. Still works, still in good condition (ignoring the plastic scratches!) and still booting OSX tiger and OS9.2 on separate disks. I also inherited a more up to date Quicksilver which now runs Sorbet leopard. It's is less good condition though as the person who owned it did not take care of it and turned it in to an art project because it stopped working. the CPU card reports a L3(?) Cache error on post and it always fails the first boot, have to hit reset and warm boot after the cache gets disabled by the firmware. I managed to get it to work after a lot of TLC and sheer 'Technomancy' but even I have my limits with the CPU card problem.

HI. Nice video, interesting. I love this machine because after the failure of the old PowerPc 9x00 series which had 2 PPc 604e of which the second cpu was often unused because OS8/9 were not able to exploit them, with the G4, a cpu that was already born with the hardware possibility of joining to a second cpu and most importantly, to be managed by a Multitasking Premptive Multiprocessor operating system. So all good with OSx, especially OSx Tiger 10.4.11, optimized to squeeze the most out of PowerPCs. Moreover, the 1MB level 2 or 3 Cache helps a lot the fast management of data and applications compared to the slow PC100 SDR ram, which later became PC133 and DDR 333 on later PowerMacs.
In order to take full advantage of the machine, my advice is to use an ATI 9600/9700/9800 AGP, which besides being very fast, under Tiger is exploited for hardware acceleration in apps (Cocoa), while games require OpenGL; in any case, the games also benefit from it.
Bring the total ram to 1GB or 2GB and try applications such as After Effect 5, FinalCut Studio 5, Photoshop CS, Cinema 4D 11.5 apps that take advantage of the double processor, the extra ram and multitasking (On Mac Garden you can find all the software mentioned) .
Perhaps you might be surprised to see that while rendering in Cinema4D, you can edit a video in DV format in real time and while rendering effects play a round of Quake2...thanks to the real multitasking and enormously underestimated power of the G4s ( the feedback of the G4 is better than that of its older brother G5, again thanks to the large caches it is equipped with. Apple was right to use the same technique used by SGI Silicon Graphic for its Workstations; use large caches from 4 to 16Mb for processor).
Make another video with the apps I mentioned....

That's not a Sawtooth G4, but a 'Gigabit Ethernet' model. Both have the same 'M' no., but different EMC numbers (1864, in this case). Sawtooth had slower ethernet and no ADC port. Most importantly, there were no dual-CPU Sawtooth models.

Interesting Mac. My G4 is a Gigabit Ethernet model (just like this one) and it’s built in the US. Not Ireland. That leads me to believe this is a custom order. Apple’s custom build to order systems have traditionally been built in their Dublin plant (they still do this to this day!) Also these G4’s never had the Samsung PSU. The one you are referring to came in the MDDs from 2002 onwards and used parts from the G4 Xserve. As with the ADC monitor there’s weren’t sold very long and we’re basically there to provide a stop gap solution for the lower end since Apple’s LCD monitors were still very expensive. The CRT Studio display only sold with Graphite G4’s of the Gigabit Ethernet and Digital Audio varieties. So it was likely bought with the system. I’d recommend doing a video card upgrade. The solution I have in my G4 is a GeForce 6200 in the AGP slot for OS X and a Rage 128 PCI in the PCI slot for OS 9 games. Speaking of OS 9 you should definitely install that on this system as it’s where they perform their best and OS 9 is still a really nice OS to use for basic tasks like productivity.

Dude the industrial design of 90s apple was a ripoff from SGI cpu designs. First machines to use this type of design, were the indigo, or the os2, or the 320, 540, i mean, apple just ripped off the design, and made it cooler. Even the use of xeon processors, was original from sgi, with irix dating back to 1988!!!! And i used to have 4 in my studio, they were soooo slow compared to a pc, like... soooooooo slow.
