Love your dog's answer to your question at 1:57 lol! ;)
Ram was tested in Canada where it's at the most it's -45 degrees Celsius (-49 Fahrenheit without the wind chill) in Alberta so of corse it's going to start like that when it's only -25 degrees Celsius (-13 Fahrenheit) that's cold for you guys in the states, but up here that's just a normal day. My 89 Dodge Ram 1500 Cummins doesn't have a problem starting without being plugged in at -25 degrees Celsius
Not all of us Americans live further south than Canadians you know. #49thstate
alaska is warmer then our territoires you know
Your dog looked like he was doing a "drum roll" just before the truck started; cute!
Yeah he is a great pup!
Amazing this modern Diesel engine is starting at such low temps (-25*C) WITHOUT any pre-heating delay. Only on temps below -30*C (approx.) the Glow-Plugs will pre-heat up to just 5 seconds! :-0)
Mike Delphine the glow plugs r in cylinder and ceramic vs metal. The cylinders r small on a 3l v6. So it heats the air fast. Plus the glow plugs stay on while cranking. All small diesels start like this...
A few short years ago I had a 6.0 Powerstroke that cranked up every single time in the middle of winter, in - temps. Its how you take care of them. Also, cetane boosters promise you an increase in cetane but in reality they do noting. They'll lube your fuel up a bit, but thats about all they do.
Excellent video thanks for your input, I've had growing interest in the eco diesel ram, i live in canada and that cold start is very important for our harsh winters, great vid thanks again
Brian - thanks for the videos, both the Ford EcoBoost and the Ram ED. It is nice to hear commentary and opinion from a service tech - thanks for your info. Now - down to my question: as the ED fires right up in this very cold temperature, how long does it take, to get warm / hot air out of the heater and defrost? I have literal tons and tons of daily-driven diesel co-workers, friends and family members... Ford GM and Dodge.. Sure they may start, but it takes an eternity to get warm air out of the heater / defrost. How is it for the VM Motori? Just for reference, in near zero temps, my 5.7 Dodge gasser makes heat in a very short period - 5, maybe 10 minutes tops... you could BAKE POTATOES in the cab (yes it's that hot) and I'm not joking. Keep up the good work - I am not a Dodge or gas fanboy, this is my first Dodge ('08 2500)
Stanadyne Performance Formula. I once let diesel sit in a jar outside in -14F temps. The next morning it looked like a yellow slushie drink all froze and waxed up. A few drops of PF and it instantly went to a yellow liquid. It works. PS....my 1991 Dodge Cummins will start that easily in the same temps as long as you have anti-gel in the fuel...no cords attached.
It is better just to plug in your diesel or even better yet to keep it inside (keeps the fuel warm). If you must keep your truck outside, plug it in and add some diesel from inside that is warm.
If you can use winterized diesel get it for the cold days. At 0 degrees without any wind usually you are ok on regular diesel that is local unless there is a quick cold snap (the fuel distributors add additives for the colder weather). Diesel fuel from the south brought to a colder north will not have these additives and will gel.
The PS (Power service) diesel products work and they are the only additives I use. If you can - use a led flashlight with a zoom and swirl the fuel with a stick to see if it is gelling. -If it is add a little PS red and give it 1/2 hr or so to work. The PS White is added to the fuel so it will not gel -and you really don’t need that much. Run the truck so the additive laden fuel gets into the filter/pumps/injectors also. You can use a temperature laser to get the temp of the fuel also.
Worst situation: You have a full tank of non-winterized gelled fuel. (Must use PS Red (911) and a good portion of that smaller bottle and wait for it to degrade the fuel. Buy the bigger bottles at Fleet and Farm or farm implement stores. Sometime the truck stops will have it on sale and buy a bottle of the white and red.
this is the truck i want after college
THANK YOU, and appreciate you and the videos you share
Oh I love these trucks! I'd never buy a Ram with a hemi and the V6 is out of the questions since I will tow up to 7,000lbs. But seriously, these engines are just fantastic. Now I know what they're like in the cold too. Theres a guy who has a 2014 Ecodiesel and already has 125,000 miles on it. Next year, one will be mine!
Brandon Friesen Why wouldn't you buy one towing 7,000 lbs? That is doable with either the hemi or the EcoDiesel...
FFHavoK I should've worded my comment better. The Pentestar can't tow what I want but the ecodiesel and
Hemi can. I don't like the hemi but love the ecodiesel. It's gets mid size car fuel economy but can still tow and do work. This is easily the most balanced engine out there right now.
+Brandon Friesen thanks for the clarification. makes much more sense :) I love my EcoDiesel
FFHavoK How many miles you have on it? Been good so far? No DEF issues?
+Brandon Friesen 8500 so far. it's a 2015. And no problems so far
I knew you were a smart guy. And then a saw your boxers. You are a genius best dogs ever! Now get them inside!
My 67 powerstroke starts the same way it's amazing
Yup I know what you mean once the 2011 came out we never had starting issue again.
Nice truck. Been wishing Ford to put a light duty diesel out for last several years.
+John Fountaine Ford has a little diesel in the new Transits. I haven't heard much about them though. We got a couple transits at work (F250 and F350 Transits) but opted for the ecoboost engines instead. We had about 60,000 miles on them with no problems but then I left that job so I don't know if they are having any problems now with the ecoboost but they are definitely fun to drive and have tons of power.
John Fountaine ford will be releasing one this year
Hey, it's out now ;)
-30 my 06 kia spectra fired right up after sitting in that temp for a couple days! my 97 f150 xlt 4.2 v6 would crank right up after parked all week in -30 weather to in the great state of minnesota! interstate batteries make a hell of a difference! my 99 grand am would not start in -30 with a new battery and even after it got started it blew black smoke idled rough and after 15 minutes it was fine.
The Ecodiesel's 5W-30 synthetic helps some I bet. As opposed to most heavy duty diesels that use 15W-40 and have a bitch of a time cranking over in that weather, even when plugged in.
+Leif Jensen Common rail is the biggest help, but running 5w-40 full synthetic in the old HEUI injected engines does help allot.
My 02 cummins never was plugged in and starts fine also my 99 cummins doesn't even notice the temperature out here in the plains.
Good Ol Italian Engineering
So far yes
German, I think. Italian made, in Cento I believe.
Newer diesels are designed different, which allows them to start quicker in colder weather.
those poor dogs were cold as fuck
Hope to have one soon. I live in central Illinois.
Stanadyne Performance Formula is WAY better than PS would dream of being.
It starts great..Your problem is your used to Fords. The GM Duramax easily starts at -13 as well..even back to 01. .My old 97 Dodge Cummins would fire easily too, but you would need to give the fuel pedal a tiny nudge until it was running a minute. Fords start like crap, only the 6.7 starts good cold.
Yeah the 6.7l was the first for common rail and does start great I agree.
You sir are full of shit my 7.3 starts decently in this weather so your source dosent know his stuff
I know the 7.3 is hard starting if everything is not just right I have worked on them for 10 years at the dealer. Your must be very well taken care of!
Ram EcoDiesel Source yeah its been taken care of
+Ram EcoDiesel Source no, the 6.4 was the first.
I would say your main issue is the fact that you live some where so cold! Looking at all of that snow makes me want to go take a hot shower!
That's a common rail for ya lol, cranks over right away and goes right into high idle. I wouldn't make a habit of not plugging it in just because it starts, it does put unnecessary stress on engine components.
Yeah we didn't get it on the fords till 2011 they have been great ever since.
+Ram EcoDiesel Source Fords were common rail starting in 2008 with the Navistar 6.4.
+Jim Zaremski Yeah your right I wonder why I said 2011 I know Ford changed over to common rail after the 6.0L injector stiction problems I went to the Ford schooling on that engine. Must of been a late night.
+Ram EcoDiesel Source I think the switch to common rail was because HEUI couldn't generate the injection pressures required to meet the 2008+ standards.
Probably because you wanted to forget that Powerstrokes even existed from 2003 through 2010 and the excessive amount of Navistar engineered and manufactured 6.0 and 6.4 engines that came through the shop with the same issues. The fact that Ford didn't hold them accountable for delivering an engine from 2003-2007 with a known design flaw is beyond me. Then ford goes and throws these engines into trucks that they know are ticking time bombs with a bunch of Band-Aid fixes that they hoped would just get it out of the warranty period. With the 6.4 from 2008-2010, a good chunk of those problems were courtesy of the EPA. Navistar put a huge dent in the reputation and reliability of the Powerstroke brand. Thank god they are now in house with the 6.7. It has been one hell of engine so far for me.
Sounds like a mix of a powerstroke and a Cummins
It's got a decent diesel clatter, I wonder how loud it will be in the future, you know what loud is since you've said you had a old powerstroke.
I'm a huge fan of the Diesel fuel supplement you're using. I've used it in a 45ft Diesel RV and immediately noticed the difference in performance. What type of fuel milage are you averaging with your EcoDiesel? I watched a review of a brand new EcoDiesel being delivered and it only averaged 23 MPG on the trip. Certainly that's either a fluke or the real world milage is far worse than claimed. I'd love your feedback on the subject.
I have a whole video on this subject basically 24.7 avg and 32mpg cruising at 50-55mph.
hello, when you start the car remotely, is the air conditioning or heating automatically adjusted according to the outside temperature?

Nice info I am thinking of getting an eco .Are you still happy with yours and have you had any problems and also how much can you tow comfortably ?
how long does it take for engine to warm up so you can feel a difference in the cab, say if the windshield is frosted over will it defrost or does it take forever ? Thanks.
+Dan Callahan Not sure I always remote start it and it is nice and warm by the time I get to it.
It's been -5 or so we don't shut the trucks off let them idle . Big rigs
Want a dodge but the cost is prohibitive. Think I'm getting a leftover v-6 chevy . 18 mpg or so 24 grand after 10k rebate can't pass that up won't spend the 34 grand to get the diesel to get 22 mpg.
Hello I bought a 2014 ecodiesel 2 weeks ago it is my first diesel truck and I love it, I live in Texas where is not to cold but 2 times already when I first crank the truck it tuns for about 10 seconds and then stops with out starting, is that normal on this diesel truck specially on this particular trucks??
Any difference on the incoming model of EcoDiesel to outgoing model? Thx for your input. Keep up the great work.
+Mitch Trujillo Not that I know of no besides the obvious engineering improvements.
For regular warm weather and winter weather use you should try Howe's Diesel fuel conditioner and anti gellant. Boosts cetane and prevents algae growth in the tank. It is also guaranteed to -25 or the tow is and repair is free if I remember correctly.
what kind of problems have you had with this truck and do you honestly recommend this truck to people
Do you still have it?? Mines a 2014 and not a problem so far.. 57,000 mi
Nice truck. I am considering getting an ecodiesel. Have you had any issues with the truck? Thanks
No problems yet but only 500 miles on it so far. We will see when I do my cross country tour this summer.
what area of chicago are you from? pretty cool your from Illinois, small world, im near the Brookfield Zoo area.
Hey man, I'm seriously considering buying a 2016 EcoDiesel Larime Limited. Have you looked into the issues of DEV system errors/check engine light or moisture on the wiring harness? You may have seen that RUclips video on this as well from another owner already.
That is pretty impressive sir.
Do any of the Ford products start in that kind of condition and weather?
+Martin Yapor 6.7L Diesel yes.
6.4 does
+Ram EcoDiesel Source considering that you're a ford specialist would you ever buy a Ford power stroke after it's time to replace your Dodge Ram, although I'm sure you can probably put 1,000,000 miles on this eco-boost Ram. lol
+LS260GTO MIY eco boost is a ford trade mark, and this is a barely tested new engine, not even made by cummins. no way will do 1mil miles
+Ram EcoDiesel Source
What do you think about the new Nissan Titan XD and the concept Titan Warrior?
Do you ever use the winter grill cover? And do you think it is really necessary
I don't think they are needed unless the cold weather is severe and sustained such as in Canada or Alaska.
A while back Ford was supposed to come out with a diesel in there F150. Ford was talking about this for years and then nothing. What happened why did Ford stop.
The ecoboost happened.
Apparently the f150 is getting the 3.2l powerStoke in 2017
That would be nice seems allot is changing in 2017
+Andrew Lawhead gas is still too cheap in the US to make diesel a widely-appealing option.
+Jim Zaremski Most places here diesel can be anywhere from 40 cents to $1 cheaper than regular gas which is a nice change.
Do you recommend plugging in a 2018 ecodiesel for -30? Noticed plug port is there but don't know if I need to order the cord to plug it in. Suggestions?
you're fordtechMakuloco!!!
+Nelson Dimas Yup that's me!
+Ram EcoDiesel Source i am also a Ford technician in dallas Texas,
Nelson Dimas Yeah how are you liking it? I think the only thing I miss is the access to the PTS discussion boards.
+Ram EcoDiesel Source I've heard that these engines are extremely difficult to work on for the average guy (you need special tools,it's complicated,etc..) I even heard right away that the Cummins guys didn't even want to work on them. What do you think? You of course are way above average in mechanical ability but what have you noticed?
They don't look like they are any harder to work on than what I am used to with the 6.4L and 6.7L diesels from Ford.
nice
im looking to buy one of these trucks and was wondering has it been reliable so far? any issues and how many miles on urs so far?
It has been ultra reliable for the last 22k mile I have had it only minor problems here and there.
Just out of curiosity what were some of the minor problems? Thanks!! And great videos by the way. New subscriber here.
Nice info you're putting out there for folks especially interested in this pickup truck. Was surprised to see those beautiful Boxers, too! Thanks for the good videos.
how long do you have to wait to drive? I had an 07 6.0 you had to wait 5 or 10 min or it was really rough.
+Nick Green You could technically drive away right after startup with no drivability concerns.
Man I can't wait to get one of these. You have help make my decision so easy. Keep up the great videos
block your plate? why
Idk it is recommended for privacy reasons
+Ram EcoDiesel Source weird. it's not very private. but ok
+05ls4gxp the idea is its a way to track your location some say to some say what's the big deal you drive down the road with them some even go as far as blocking the vin.
no white smoke. seems like it was already hot. next time touch the manifold. BS?
Is this -13 f or Celsius
Where did you get the fender accessories?
+Jerry Charles The truck is all stock.
are your tires are 4 season ?
all season yes
not to impressive it got that cold in Massachusetts and my 2011 2500 starts right up no problems no plug no anti gel
Nice vid. You in the States or Canada?
States in the Midwest nice and cold this time of year for this kind of test.
-13 is hardly a cold start. -45 is a real cold start.
Typical RAM. Nothing stops it. If you can't dodge it RAM it.
Never use that 911 in a diesel. Terrible stuff! Kill your motor!
+Tim Leach Only in emergencies.
+Tim Leach why? can you explain what the problems you had with it. I have a friend who uses it he hasn't said anything bad about it yet .
It's like putting gas in your diesel. It preignites and can destroy your injectors. Only use this stuff in absolute emergency when you have nothing else. In the Bakken oil fields I saw a lot of diesels ruined from the stuff being misused like regular additive.
Tim Leach Yeah that would be a problem if the guys are using an additive that is called 911 or emergency situation and using it like a regular anti-gel additive with every tankful. Its strong stuff and works but should only be used in emergencies as the bottle states. So it just sits in the cargo buckets in the floor until that day comes.
Do you mean 9-18 lol
hot shot secret is better....
Too many RUclips reviewers are narcissistic. News flash... we don't enjoy the mugtime as much as you do. Wanna review a truck? Great. Show me the truck not your face.
Thumbs down.

Edwin h Curry those are all gas engines. There's no reason why they shouldnt. this is diesel which is notorious as a fuel to be a hard start in the winter
