    I love how Robert Jordan described magic in his wheel of time series. For me it is the gold standart against which all systems should be measured.

    My magic system is loosely based in Daoist Cultivation and Hermetic Sigils. Magicians need train their physicaly fit, emotionally stable and intellectually erudite to strengthen their three centres, but meditation is needed to improve access to them and increase control over their balance and flow. For any spell that affects more than just the caster's own body and mind, incantations and ritual circles are essential foci that facillitate channelling and shaping the energy correctly. Without these, the energy will just flow randomly without effect. There are no instantauous spells. Even the spells that have immediate effect require fully developed rituals to cast. As a rule (exceptions exist), a person's energy can not extend past their body, it would require an open wound for it to cross the skin barrier. Therefor, there is (almost) always an element of blood sacrifice involved.

    I did work on a Magic System for a Fantasy Setting of mine that requires the Mages (Magic Users of Various Races and Diaspora that are not inbred to an extreme extent) to Learn how to Use Magic from those who Know how to Chanel Magic and Cast Spells
    Also, Magic in this world also requires Mental Discipline and Focus, Just like Martial Arts in the Real World
    What to you think about this?

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds  3 месяца назад +2

      I think that has potentially for a good system. I'd draw on Avatar the Last Airbender for inspiration. They have the same kind of system where you need discipline and focus.

    i love the grishaverse’s magic system. it’s elegant, constrained, and the characters have an incomplete understanding that drives culture. when they find out more, it doesn’t feel like a shock value twist but something that was there the whole time. and the necromancy is especially cool

    Wow, a survey, that's awesome! So it's all about aspects of deconstructing the magic system into the world. If only more storytellers would do these things, we'd have so many more great fantasy novels.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds  3 месяца назад

      Yeah, if there's one thing that shines through in the survey it's this: integration, integration, integration. Fantasy readers want worlds where the sense of wonder is packaged into the world and feels lived in.

    In my new world setting Kickstarter, I'm going to explore how the quantum (and here she mentions it as it write this😂) flux/foam of the space around the solar system of my world, shapes how the conflicts between the theocracies that dominate the continent and the Kabalists who jealously guard the "quantum streams" that permeate the entire planet.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds  3 месяца назад +1

      hahaha, I love magic systems based on quantum. They're so fun :D I even used it in my epic fantasy, but there it is hidden away in medieval magical terms.

    • @helixxharpell
      @helixxharpell 3 месяца назад

      @@JustInTimeWorlds Yes! Hidden away is the correct term. 🤫The quantum instability in the system is responsible for the 1000s of portals(actual wormholes) that are scattered throughout the planet. But.. the magic system isn't the main focus of the world. The world is a zoo, cut off from the rest of the cosmology where the gods' experiment progresses. With the themes of family, exploration & reincarnation making up most of the focus. I draw much inspiration from Celtic and Hindu mythology. Exciting times!

    For me, if you understand how a magic system works, it isn't a magic system. It's a science system. Which is fine, but there is nothing more fantastic in it than there is in warp drive.

      There are many writers and readers who prefer “softer” magic systems. If you use those, just be wary of creating too much dues ex machina vibes.

    5:49 i think the key to the cat dilemma is that readers want to not just feel impressed by a story's complexity- but they want to feel impressive for having "got it"
    Like, nothing pisses a reader off more than 1- not understanding how a story works and 2- understanding how it works is rubberbands and chewing gum.
    What reasers want is the satisfaction of getting 100% on a book report.

    Great video! This'll help a lot.
    I also wanted to ask for some tips on something with my magic system, that being my take on the channeler and mage duo idea i saw in one of your other videos. Do you have any ideas on how a system like that would affect a world, like the government and economy?

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds  3 месяца назад +1

      So, it would depend a lot on what your magic can actually do of course. But one of the unique features would be the relationship between channeler and mage. How that relationship is established could vary between different cultures and play into different themes. One culture might enslave the channels and assign them to a mage. Another might treat them as people to be courted and convinced to enter into contract with the mage.
      Remember, that kind of magic systems has an enormous power gap. The mage needs the channel, but the channel can’t do anything with the mage.
      You’ve got great potential for thematic exploration in that power gap.

      Something that helps me figure out the effects of magic systems on society is asking "Who has the power here?" "How can the system be exploited to gain more power?" and "How would the powerful people maintain their power?". As a general rule of thumb, society (especially the larger ones, going from cities and up) would be organized according to those questions, with the powerful people exploiting the system to gain more power as well as maintaining their status (which a lot of time means discouraging anything that could seriously challenge them).
      Note that in this context "power" doesn't necessarily mean magical power, but rather political power (which can come from military applications, but also from economical applications or even cultural ones). Someone who can create an unlimited amount of grain has a hell of a lot more political power than someone who can throw fireball, even if the first is lousy at fighting compared to the latter.

    That sounds okay, but frankly, I'm tired of "high" fantasy, which have grown too bloated by an order of magnitude; I can see Monty Pythons' ragged band shouting "get on with it" every time someone brings up one of these multi-volume monstrosities. Give me Leiber's Fafrhd & the Grey Mouser any day, or Farmer's World of Tiers.
