    I find your joke about the US senate being a Gerontocracy to be misplaced... if anything we have a Plutocracy with extra steps. On a more serous note, you left out non democratic republics, also I feel like both mageocracy's and Sythocrocise are forms of technocracy which is it's self a form of meritocracy. The thing I think you left out is Diocracise which would be direct rule by deities rather than by religious figures as in a theocracy.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 8 часов назад

      That's an interesting thought. I almost feel like a diocracy could fit into a synthocrocise, but not quite. In both cases, it's rule by a so-called "superior being". So not a synthocracy, but something like it. Agreed on the mageocracy, it's a specialized form of meritocracy, but still unique enough (IMO) to deserve a callout. If I get enough additional suggestions, I'll make a second iceberg :D

    In a world I'm working on status is determined by service to the empire conferred by those of higher status. People have long chains of titles and honorifics on their names usually denoted by the greatest single status in casual encounters. They can be for various types of service, one character joined the army to gain citizenship, another is a priest knight who has authority over him, and another inherited it from his ancestors

      Heh, no. But basically, I'm a software developer with a degree in mathematics, so I'm quite mobile. I had a very bad 2019 in South Africa: my house was broken into while we were home, my partner's laptop was stolen, my car window was smashed at a traffic light and my bag stolen (called a smash and grab in South Africa). So, toward the end of that year, I decided I couldn't take the crime levels anymore. I applied for a whole bunch of jobs in northern Europe (my native language is very close to Dutch, so I figured I'd be able to cope). Ended up taking a job in Finland (where the language is of course unrelated to anything else in Europe :P ) and here we are. Literally landed in Finland 3 weeks before the borders closed due to Covid.

    I tried to incorporate some form of Kritocracy in one of my regions during worldbuilding. Loved the aspect of roaming judges that could judge cases as they travel around and instantaneously rule on cases that were brought to them. Examples that I probably took inspiration from would be judge dredd, Tyranny (video game), and judges during biblical times in israel. Though working on the government operations and higher echelons of government might turn it into a different form of government. So, working on making it stick to Kritocracy.

    • @starrmont4981
      @starrmont4981 12 часов назад

      Sounds like the Celtic Druids. From what I understand, they were a supranational order of wandering judges and wise men, respected by all tribes. Too bad they hated writing, so we know almost nothing about them.

      You may like the Judges in Final Fantasy XII, they’re sort of similar to the vibes you described and examples. The worldbuilding in general for that game can be incredibly inspiring. It manages to be expansive and provide a sense of scale to the world outside of your character in a way many other RPGs cannot.

    Aristocracies can be Tricky, Depending on the Worldbuilding of the Aristocratic Houses or Dynasties in Question in a Given Fantasy or Sci Fi Setting. Problems Aside, it is a Good Hereditary Rule Based Version of Oligarchy, where the Politics can Affect many people that call the Same Lands as their Aristocratic Dynasties call home I'm working on one Such Aristocratic System that has a Theocratic Flare to it, in a Post-Apocalyptic Future Setting that has arisen during the Reconstruction of Much of Post-WWIII Queensland in Australia, where the only Remaining Dry Land is Islands that are Few and Far Between and the Priests of the Setting's Past, and their Present Day Successors and their Families, eventually Established a Noble Class of Priests, Bishops, and if their Local Community allows it, Witches and Wizards (Though in this Setting, Magic is Minor at best and differs in Practice from Religion to Religion) any thoughts?

    • @JustInTimeWorlds

  • @jesustyronechrist2330

    Good, general take aways. I can indeed come up with examples that do these "bad things" well, so while these are criticisms, I think they only really apply when you have more issues than just that one in your story, which makes readers be more critical and try to find out the thing they dislike the most (even if it's not the problem, just the result of the problem). #1 Complexity is good when it actually means something and you have context for it and you understand the complexity. #2 Filler isn't "filler" when it is interesting and fleshes the world and characters out, feeling more like "main side quests" or "essential short stories" to the world. #3 Tropes are too often mistaken with cliches due to the similarity. There is nothing wrong with tropes as they give you structure to build upon. #4 "Sensitive themes done badly" applies to any theme done badly. I think this is just a common occurrence that can be labeled as "shock value". #5 This is a problem when the writer cannot grasp genre. There are certain things (tropes perhaps hmmmmmm?!) you have to hit in certain genres, as readers expect certain things. Imagine a romance with barely any romance. And here's also something to take into an account for about asking people their opinions: As a data scientist, I don't trust surveys unless in a VERY specific context. Basically, you need to give the full context of a survey in its entire as it was conducted to avoid misleading with the answers. Meaning the time it was done, who the target audience was, and where it was done. This is because of sample bias: A specific sample will be more inclined to answer in certain ways depending on their behaviour and bias. If the sample is big enough, you cannot generalize the results. But you can generalize them to that specific sample. "Fantasy reader" can mean anything, but it doesn't mean everyone. It means "people who read fantasy and happened to find and answer this survey". This already should give you some ideas what kind of people you might be dealing with (a.k.a. people who probably have read waaayyyyyy too much fantasy already lmao), but then there's the "where and when" that impact it. The survey could just be on Twitter (nobody has good opinions on that platform so those should be disqualified) or a carefully curated and tailored communities.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 16 часов назад

      I did try to combat the bias by doing targeted advertising on Facebook at "fantasy readers". I would never use twitter, too much anger there already lol. (I too work in data for my day job ;) )

    I find it fun to consider genetics as well. If there are people that have born affinities to elements then does that mean that their children would have that affinity as well? What if two people with separate elemental magic have a child, I wonder if dominant or recessive genes would take play or if it’s like my hero academia and the kid would get a mixture of the powers. Maybe like in the avatar universe, siblings can have different bending styles or affinities. Could create an interesting dynamic for internal drama and stuff like that.

    i don’t think sacrifice magic necessarily has to be evil. plenty of religious groups to this day practice animal sacrifice, and honestly probably have ritual standards that make the animals deaths a lot more humane than most of the meat industry. i don’t think characters would really have much room for criticism unless the story is gonna criticize meat consumption in general (which, hey, is a direction some people might decide to take their story, not sure if i’d enjoy reading it, but i guess it is perfectly valid)

    Well then, you HAVE to write a magic system based on math. I was so disappointed Yoon Ha Lee ended up never quite using the calendrical one of the Hexarchate. There's bits and pieces throughout the series but so little that it's not satisfying. It's like they made it and then never quite knew what to do with it. Make us a big juicy magic system deconstructed into the world, oh, ArchStatistician!

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 2 дня назад

      Heh. I have actually played around with it. If I can come up with a good story for it, I might well write something for it.

    • @aix83

      @@JustInTimeWorlds Maybe it would help to combine a second known element. I'm writing a story where they write equations of motion for tarot-themed powers using heraldic elements that correspond to their lineages (a heraldic tarot), and the plot itself is a mystery around two characters, one whose powers should be different and one who shouldn't have powers but does. And they discover the magic is "broken" in an unexpected way. Maybe bringing a second element on top of the math could help you find an interesting conflict that isn't war. For instance, humorous fantasy like Terry Pratchett doesn't seem to sell very well but maybe a dark academia where the chancellor just died and the provost, the dean, and other high ranking staff employ similarly backstabby tactics with those in the Unseen University to win elections and prevent each other from being elected. For instance the ArchStatistician can cast regression to the mean on other people's elections to prevent them from coming to power. In a humorous one, the number theorist can cast modular curves on a meeting, which only creates circular thinking for a brief time but has the huge side effect of boring everyone to sleep, and occasionally to death. And of course, each of the mathematicians vying for power has a secret plan for after they win.

  • @aix83
    @aix83 2 дня назад

    Wow, a survey, that's awesome! So it's all about aspects of deconstructing the magic system into the world. If only more storytellers would do these things, we'd have so many more great fantasy novels.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 2 дня назад

      Yeah, if there's one thing that shines through in the survey it's this: integration, integration, integration. Fantasy readers want worlds where the sense of wonder is packaged into the world and feels lived in.

    I agree with you and I never ran healing as one size fits all. Always assumed there was a reason we had different levels of healing. Cure light versus cure serious versus cure critical. And I use them in that way. So a critical wound, which always has the detrimental effect that lasts, cannot be cured by a cure light. The best secure light can do is stop the bleeding take away some pain so in effect you have a few hit points. But it doesn't cure the condition. A serious wounds requires a cure serious or better and a critical wound can only be healed by the strongest magic. Cure critical wound or something as effective. That sort of grit makes the game more realistic and exciting because it puts a different level of challenge on for them to overcome.

    This is possibly the best video on worlbuilding cultures I have ever seen. I pride myself on beeing a pretty decent worlbuilder thanks to my degree in history and thinking consequences of magic through. But this level of systematization is something else. Awesone. I would add a category though. Something along the lines of paranormal resources. Be it magical creatures, floating materials, magical energy sources that don t requiere mages to be used... . They would impact the economy and society pretty much the same as magic or technology without exactly beeing the same as any of them. By the way I love this graphic format of the video

      Thank you for the kind words :) Great suggestion. Would you add the paranormal resources as a category or as an enabler? As an enabler, it might be a better way to phrase constraints. I sort of saw those kinds of resources under constraints, but calling it resources might work much better.

      I think it would bé more of a category with its own enablers depending on the setting. In GOT there are dragons and the bond to the is mystical, but in Avatar we have something similar but the bond to use them is biological. They could depending on the setting be placed in any of the two categorías as an enabler, tech or magic resource. But what If in my setting their origin is not quite clear? Some could see them as magic some as tech. But if I place them in their own category based on the effect they have on society I don t have to choose right away. I can leave it to be ambiguos. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

      @@jackmorrison5272 Gotcha! So like we have technology, magic, and then other fantasy elements, for example dragons, even natural creatures that aren't native to our world? Yeah, that would be a good addition. I'll play around with it over the next few weeks.

    • @jackmorrison5272
      @jackmorrison5272 2 дня назад

      Exactly, but not only creatures but also materials, like the Unobtanium rich floating rocks of Avatar. Could the Naavi chistle smaller ones into shipform and put sails on them? And thank you for putting me on this thought track. My Worldbuilding just got better

    • @JustInTimeWorlds

      @@jackmorrison5272 Right, yeah, all fantastical elements with the enablers being stuff like divine origina, magical origin, natural part of the world, something like that. Nice. And thank you, I think that will make the model even more robust when I include it.

    "A song of ice and fire" should be in Legend, because it doesn't abuse the use of magic

    Lmao Agree only with PercyJackson being bad both film and Tv version- PJ is just average .... people need to realize this. The best to worst adaptations are LordOfTheRings ( excellent) HarryPotter ( very good ) GameofThrones ( good ) The Hunger Games ( good ) Dune reboot movies ( good ) House of the Dragon ( good ) The Hobbit ( fine & decent ) Shadow And bone ( fine & decent ) The expanse ( pretty decent ) His Dark Materials ( pretty decent ) Ms Perrigrine ( decent ) Fantastic Beasts ( decent ) Narnia ( decent ) Spiderwick movies ( nice ) Series of unfortunate events ( nice ) Wheel of time ( okay ) PercyJackson ( mediocre) Shannara ( mediocre) Witcher ( half average half bad ) Sword of truth legend of Seeker ( watchable) Eragon ( watchable) Worst : Rings of power ( DEI nonsense fanfic )

    "A Day in the Life" Stories Need to be Fairly Early in a Book, Movie, or TV Series, otherwise the Reader/Viewer will get Confused about the Pacing of said Series of Stories

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 3 дня назад

      Actually I wouldn't put them in the book at all. I use "Day in the Life of" purely for world building and it's part of my world building notes. But it helps enormously in writing. For example: I'm writing a scene with a dinner. What do they eat? I check my day in the life of. Or: I need a place for casual, yet private conversation. What time of day and place fits best? I check my day in the life of. And so on :)

    @JustInTimeWorld question. I plan on writing a story about a nation sending a diplomatic mission to another nation/polity that they have yet to have contact before. Can you give me some possible tips?

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 3 дня назад

      Sure. If there's been no contact between the two nations, build them out separately using different locations on earth as your inspiration (for example: the Roman Empire and the Han Empire. Or the Vikings and the Kingdom of Aksum, something like that), and of course including fantastical elements. Then when they encounter each other, the conflicts in their cultural understanding can create a lot of the tension you need from page to page.

    Enablers is a fascinating bit to look at. I've got a culture where everyone has "magic" but it's surprisingly poorly integrated into areas outside of war and religion, and the enablers finally made it click why. They have "divine blessing" as the source where almost everyone's slice of power has unique rules and capabilities and low skill / understanding. So each person figures out one to three applications they develop over a lifetime but the only well integrated powers societally are the ones with categorically similar effects. If they understood their powers better, they could do more precise things with it methinks.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds 3 дня назад

      Yeah, with low understanding, you can't build tools out of magic. Glad the model helped :D

    I am probably in the minority and have weird taste, but I would probably put this in reverse order. The one ring just feels like a standard macguffin to me, and the unpredictability of the wardrobe feels like the writer is just breaking the established rules of magic Things like a +1 sword, however, have the ability to change the world. Being able to create blades that can more easily cut and maintain that sharpness would change entire industries, and that makes the world more interesting to me.

  • @maxpowers9129

    The trope of the hats can sort of work for places that are isolationist, especially if the writer is making fun of the trope. For example some dwarven societies are believed to have bearded women because only men are allowed to travel and outsiders are kept out. This can lead to people thinking all dwarves have beards and some of the male dwarves are actually female. The reader never has to see the complexity of dwarven society beyond the trope of hats if it is established that there is a more complex society than people see.
