- "Selena" star Christian Serratos recognized she had some big shoes to fill when she took on the titular role of the Netflix series. Not only was she going to be compared to the original singer Selena, but also Jennifer Lopez who wowed audiences with her performance in Greg Nava's 1997 “Selena” biopic.
Similar to the previous biopic, Serratos made the decision not to sing her own version of Selena's songs and opted to perform the singer's original music instead. "I recorded quite a few songs, and I think it was always supposed to be the actress singing but … I always wanted it to be Selena because I was such a fan," she said.

Same reason Jennifer Lopez lip - synced. You can be the greatest actress in the world, but you're not gonna sing like Selena sang. Why even go there? Nothing personal against either actress, but that's just a fact.

The only singer that was closer to how Selena sang, was Jennifer Pena.. when she was younger she sounder like Selena!!
I love that she actually didn't want to sing in the series I definitely think that it's important for selena's actual voice to be shown through. I haven't seen that since j.lo played her in the movie.
It's only right. If you're making a movie / series about such a legendary artist, I feel like it's the respectful thing, both to that artist, and their fans. It's very rare that an actor or an actress can sing the songs of a legendary artist in their own voice, and really do their songs justice enough to make the part they're playing believable. That's how I feel, anyway.

I love how everyone is talking like the personality knew Selena, none of you knew her. If her family thinks she did a good job and they chose her, there’s a reason for it she did it well and if her family is happy with her preference that’s all that matters, the lip syncing wasn’t great I’ll give y’all that

No one will ever be happy with who is cast as Selena. There were things I didn't like about the series, but I don't think it was bad. Selena was irreplaceable. One of a kind. We all have the image of her and come in with bias. Christian did fine, I just wish they'd have worked on the lip synching more in editting.
Agreed. Even though at first I felt like Christian wasn't "nailing" the role of Selena, there's no way anyone can be *exactly* like Selena. She was a one of a kind star and she was tragically taken from the world much too soon. I think it's a touching detail to help us remember that THE Selena is gone and we are just watching an actress portray her.

I had saw the first commercial for the Selena series before but i recently found the commercial with Christian in Selena's iconic white outfit and i lost it. Goosebumps popped up on my arms and i cried. My husband laughed at me but i truly cried. I honestly can't wait...

So maybe that's why it affected me so plus the fact footage from the 94 Astrodome concert is so hard to find but yes i cried. I will admit, i literally flipping cried. And i highly doubt I'm alone. I can't wait until tomorrow. I bet in some way, some how, something will break tomorrow when this series comes out. Selena is so loved all over the world, i have no doubt. I met her on set. She was lovely. Friendly, and totally ready to work. Confident and focused, but also not just in her own zone enough to deflect other people around her. I believe we became friends in that very moment.
Not everything is personal, people just might not feel she looks the part but that has nothing to do with her as a person...
Same thing happen with the actress that plays wonder woman. People were so sceptical about her doing that rol because she looked different from previous actrices and at the end everyone loves her...

I think people forget it's about the story!! Which was told beautifully. Yes, the visuals can get in the way at times, but like I said it's about the story. I think we were able to gain a lot of insight on her family's upbringing and the real stepping stones of her career and the works of her family WITH visuals. It was a great portrayal so far. Cant wait for part 2
The lip sync and dance move were meh but the story being told is beautiful, the acting was compelling and I believe Suzette did an amazing job in portraying the entire family’s role in Selena’s success. A.B. Is a lyrical and musical genius but boy was he bogged with pressure. So, hush up about “jlo did better dance moves” jlo was first a dancer, this girl is an actress first and it shows. 👏🏼

Mexican American! Selena was born in the United States. That is what made her so special. She was proud of both her Mexican and American identities and that is why so many people in Mexico and the United States can relate to her.. She was so much more than just being "Mexican."

No one will ever replace Selena or portray her perfectly, not even JLo. But Christian was the right choice. She was committed to this role a thousand percent. And the way she brought Selena’s spirit to life was incredible, she really did hit the nail on the head with that.
Selena is the only artist, when I hear her name, I have to play her music. It’s like, an impulse.
*I’m always pleasantly surprised by her popularity outside of CCTX, where she and I both grew up.

Christian did a good job, scratch that- great job everything else as far as lip syncing goes was maybe on the editors part. Christian is a true professional I dig her performance. The story line is amazing and the transitioning from child to adult is on point. They’re telling you the story of Selena and y’all are only worried about her lip syncing and body movements being off. Y’all focus on one wrong and forget about the other things they made right.

@@alexisb9250 it is. But the media and critics got to see it this past weekend and a lot of the reviews are saying that the series doesn't give Selena a voice and instead predominantly features Abraham and A.B as the spotlight.
It's disappointing to me considering the fact that I've been waiting to watch it since last year...and I don't even have Netflix! I hope part 2 is better if the reviews are right about part 1

I watched all the episodes of the Selena's series that's on netflix. I think it's bad. She wasn't good for the roll. She did bad. She doesn't even look like Selena. Not even a little bit. She's skinner than Selena. The people that played the parents, the brother, the sister, & the husband. Didn't even look a little like them. The wigs they wore in the netflix series look bad. Her lips singing is bad. The green screen looks stupid. I don't like how the netfilx series made it like it wasn't about Selena's legacy & her death. It was about Abraham how he came up with the band, & how he managed the band from when they were kids till Senela died. The 1997 Selena movie is better. Jennifer Lopez played Selena very well. The parents, the brother, the sister, Selena's husband look kind of like them. The movie didn't use a stupid green. The 1997 did a good job at portraying Selena's legacy, Selena Chris's love story & Selena's death well. Jennifer Lopez did a very good job at doing the roll of Selena. At least the people who played the parent, the brother, the sister, & Selena's husband looked like them a little bit. I can watch the movie so many time & not get bored of it. Every time I watch the movie I cry.

“Fans” expected to see Jlo’s Selena. That’s what many “fans” and I repeat “” believe Selena was. And as She said they are trying to show the Selena people have just ignored for years.
At first i was disappointed too. But now i really enjoy the series.
Not everyone, I’m from Texas n I have family and friends that have always loved that Selena from when she was starting, she was famous here. I also was born in Monterrey so she was their goddess over there. We r happy to c this Selena from the 80s, we r happy to c more of the story of Pete Astudillo cus he was essential to los dinos n he was a big deal, he had a solo career and is a song writer to A LOT of Mexican singers, still. I was disappointed that both Pete and Chris didn’t look at all like the real ones, but if u get past that, it’s a good story. The movie was rushed, in the movie it pretty much shows that Selena’s dad forgave her and Chris the day after they eloped, in reality Selena leaves with Chris for about 2 yrs and Abraham manages/produces Pete during that time alongside some of the Dinos.

I assure you people didn't tune in for Abraham's life, for suzette's life we tuned in for Selena's life, and they knew that and took advantage to show their story

I think she has some of the same sweetness, determination, and beautiful stubbornness that Selena had.
I’m very curious to how this series will turn out as they are using Selena’s real musical voice in the series. Hopefully there will be a soundtrack sold like as for the movie. Also Selena was Mexican American, third generation from TX , her grandparents were from northern Mexico. She was forced to go into Mexican music as this was and is what they played in bailes etc. Her dad knew this is how they would get a foot into popularity then crossover. Selena wanted to sing pop , country etc in English, I believe she would had made it in English either way because no one else has that voice of hers . Because honored and blessed she stuck to her roots. She had to learn Spanish after singing in Spanish fanatically. Just saying.

As a Selena fan, truly disappointed. Didn't expect her to sing, but the lip syncing was terrible. Selena was known for her passionate music and her passion translated to her performances. She would even smudge the microphone with her red lipstick. This actress did NOT convey that one bit. Her performance was very flat. Again, very disappointing. I was really wanting to like this series.

I agree 💯. I actually quit watching because the series didn't do Selena justice at all. The acting was mediocre at best and the lip syncing was second hand embarrassment. Coming from her family I expected a tip top series!

We do, but we can't forget the thousands of years of culture and heritage that is inculcated into us, like our food or Dia de Muertos. Superficially, it is easy to misrepresent; but scratch deeper, and you will see that its our culture's veneration to life, family, human bonds, and love. These too are Mexican stories. Please keep telling them, tell more, because there is plenty to pick from. Our roots run deep, in this land and continent.

Selena undeniably had IT 🌟and in her interviews she came across soo present, heart on her sleeve, and a total goof ball. Larger than life smiles, big, warm energy. The actress seemed distant and too cold 🥶 or mysterious and not at all goofy 🙃 in Selena’s lovable ways.
Selena was an introvert...she portrayed an extrovert..but she was a shy person that just liked to relax at home...her stage persona wasn't the real her

The show was great. The family helped write down their journey. It’s a side a lot of people didn’t know of and as fans of Selena it’s great to be able to have that story now. She did a great job regardless of what everyone says. And as Suzette said.. people had bad reactions to Jlo being Selena too so 🤷🏽♀️

Do not direct your disappointment in the series to Christian - direct it to the writers/creators who let Part 1 of this series down. I felt Christian did amazing embodying the Selena spirit (as confirmed by this interview, her performance came from an honest place!) but she literally wasn't given much to work with for the first 6.5 episodes! How is the show named Selena yet most of Part 1 was about the father and brother! Poor poor story management from the creators of the show. I hope things will be better in Part 2 and Christian's work will really get to shine!

I think also she was getting a lot of backlash from the fans on the teaser trailer that was released early on where she was singing Selena’s song lol after that I think the studio productions were like “nope can’t risk it” 🤣
Well I’m glad she realizes all the pressure she is under to get this right. We don’t play about Selena especially being from Texas. That’s why when she was like I was killing myself over this role in my head I was like “as you should.” LOL this is definitely one of those projects where there is ZERO room for error. All I’m saying is her Texas accent and Dancing better be ON POINT!!!!

I didn't notice she was lip sync in all songs until Como La Flor in the Astrodome (watched a lot of songs of that concert) and i really liked her playing Selena pretty much!

I don't understand how some fans hate on small details as selena but here the fans have nothing but positive stuff to say.
In a way, I can understand. I've been a huge Selena fan for 23 years, so I know that her fans don't play around when it comes to how she's spoken of, portrayed, etc. It's just that she's loved so much, that people want her music and her memory to be respected to the greatest extent possible, and they want her to be portrayed as accurately as possible. We long - time fans will be able to tell if that's the case. I hope so. Been looking forward to this. I mean, the series is being made with her family's blessing, or so I've been told, so I can only assume that it will be pretty accurate as far as Selena's life and career are concerned.
