Thabks for the great tips on this topic, highly useful. I wonder if you managed to measure the shaft diameter, and the outer diameter of the nylon gear? As well as the number of teeth and the length of the gear. This way, we can source for replacement gears somewhere.
Ah sadly I didn't end up taking measurements of the damaged peice, I was a bit flustered when the gear continued to break apart when I got the camera opened so I merely applied the glue till it set and patched the camera back up! If I crack open another one I'll try to get better data!
Thanks for showing this. Aside from the image stabilization not working and the annoying flashing red IS icon, is there any harm in leaving this alone? I am a novice with an epl-1 I've used mainly as point and shoot, but lately have become interested in really learning how to use it. I am capable of the teardown and repair, but my instincts are telling me to leave it alone.
There are 2 minor things to when it comes to leaving it. The sensor will basically stay parked a little off centre most of the times it's not noticeable, but if you happen to use lenses with a lot of swirling bokeh you may notice it's not centered and that's just due to the stabilizer not working. The second thing is the noise at start up you might have noticed it makes some semi loud noises that is the motor trying to move the sensor but it isn't moving anywhere, again won't affect shooting, might just be mildly annoying. But in short leaving it along won't result in any further damage or issues as far as I can tell.
Good video! I just turned apart my EPL-6 cuz of the IBIS problem and I noticed that one of the gears was loose. When I reassemble, notice that the sensor recovered some movement, but it doesn’t go center. I wonder if there is a way to calibrate the two motors to center, cuz I noticed that you can turn both gears to one way and then it stops, same to the other way. Also, both motors have a potentiometer that seems to be the one that alines them 🤔. Greetings from Colombia!
@@NICKORAZU Hmm I have heard that you may need to manually move the gear on the axis that isn't centring, it's possible the motor end stops aren't getting hit. But I'm not sure if that is an actual fact or just an idea. But atleast if you know that the sensor is moving in x and y that the gearing itself is fine.
@@Mr50mmish Before doing all the teardown, my sensor doesn’t moved horizontally, now it does, when I turn on the camera it shakes in both ways, but not like circular like when it works properly. So I don’t know if it’s because I had to move the gears to an specific position before turning the camera on or if that can be fixed by software (Assuming that the gears are working cuz of the movement and sound) Very interesting 😎
@@NICKORAZUno calibration is needed - the camera automatically does that at each startup. You can see it - and that's also why a camera with broken IBIS gears makes such a terrible noise at startup; it's the broken gears skipping during the calibration.
I'm too scared to do this on my own! I don't even have the right tools :( Would you be up to taking apart my EPL6 to fix it? How much would you charge?
It's not too bad! Especially with how good some of the disassembly guides are! Haha it might be better value to grab a second hand E-PL6 as they aren't too expensive I am not sure where you are located but shipping on its own might get pricey! I honestly wouldn't charge much if you really wanted to as it's mainly disassembly and some glue (if the gear is just a bit damaged and not shattered). That said I am not sure how much of a long term repair it is! Anyways feel free to reach out to me in the email listed on the channel if you wanna explore a repair option!
Crazy glue is not the best choice for cameras, as the fumes it gives off while drying will fog plastic and glass. Not what you want to happen to the sensor stack!
Much appreciated. Your tips are a great prep
Glad you found it useful!

Yeah there are probably a lot of better options.
