OMG...is that...NEW Ballistic Gel?! Wow! Its funny how I get surprised by this when an average video made by the high end gun channels make $400 on the LOW end...Then they use the yellow shit gel you cant see shit through. Nice to actually see someone reinvest into the channel rather than just claim it!
He just makes it out of Jello-o in a pan. its low quality, but it's see through since he cooks it twice to get rid of the bubbles
hahhahahahahaha This isn't Jello...LOL This is FBI grade and calculated ballistic gel that costs about $150-$300 per block depending on block size.
Thank you for the compliment on the gel, a lot of time and $ is invested into making sure my gel blocks are not only calibrated properly, but also molded and cooked at the perfect temperature to gain perfect clarity every time. Glad it's noticed and appreciated.
GY6vids no doubt, thanks for the pin...LoL
...there you go Andrew...how many jello blocks to stop a bullet video idea....fuck. It makes me wonder if they have ever even touched jello...
I recall a conversation I had with my FFL one day as I was picking up a pistol I purchased. I asked him, "What type of firearm do you carry at work for self defense"? He answered, "A .380 pocket pistol." When I asked him if he felt that it might be a little underpowered, he said, "I dunno, let me shoot you in the face with it and you tell me."
I tell people the same when they make joke about my .22 LR...
@@globaldefense13 22lr aint no joke so much power in that tiny round
I was shot by a .380 about 4 times and I drove myself to the hospital..
@@jackjack4412 man did u write it down before you pass out with some heavy drink the other night ?
@Omar Slim 22 LR is a good ammo , so far the penetrating was really good at 20 meter distance but the problem is using rifle vs gun makes a lot of difference in a sticky situation
.
I carry the .380 at work because I need deep concealment. I need a tiny gun. I have no other choice.
As for the round’s effectiveness? I saw James Bond shoot a helicopter out of the sky with a .380!!! You can’t argue with science!
Well, That's good enough for me!
Nope, Bond shot down that helicopter with his Walther PPK in .32 Auto which is what he almost always carries! He used to carry a .25 Auto ( Dr. No ) but M made him give it up.
blindjoedeath ^this...if it’s good enough for Bond it’s good enough for me 🍸
😂😂😂. Well you’ve convinced me.
😂
.380 in the pocket beats a .45 on the dresser as the old people say. I gotta concur
BANE KITTY Exactly. This fact changed my opinion about .380 micros.
Not with the Xds 😂
@@maxalas2076 have a xds 9mm, weighs twice as much as a ruger lcp, and only fits 7/8 in the mag, the lcp 2 fits 7 in mag. Xds is heavier, and much much larger.
True but the argument people try to say it is just as good is bs. Same goes with 25acp people. Carry as big and nastiest round as possible you can effectively control. Better then nothing but If I am going to have to shoot a son of a bitch he will drop
Shot placement is key ,a 22 short between the eyes is deadlier than a 44 to the leg!
There is a huge HUGE difference between being unarmed or carrying a .380
Captbosco
TRUE
And so few seem to appreciate that🥱.
Much much bigger difference than 9mm vs .380.
If you've got no firearm and your encountering a felonious assault, a robbery, potential homicide on you, rape on a woman, what ever, youre up shit creek. A small gun can totally keep you safe. I pulled a .38 on a greyhound bus that was being hijacked. Luckily the bus driver slammed on the breaks and grabbed the weasel by the neck and threw him off the bus in the hot Georgia sun in the middle of no where but I had gun in hand hidden in lap. I also pulled a .44 magnum sw 4" on two spanish speaking robbers in texas. I also pulled a glock .40 on a murderer trying to kill my friend and I by running us over and beating us with a pipe, I just never reached the justifiable moment, escape and evasion was still possible. He got prison 10 years later for murder, I had investigated who my asaulter was based on his distinctive monster truck and followed him on the internet. He was a locally know and widely known Mississippi badass well known to state law enforcement but friends with the local sherriff. Having a gun keeps you from being up shit creek for sure. I'd be robbed or dead if dad didnt teach me to keep and have a gun.
These shots definitely can kills people depend on where its hit (just like any other calibers).
gun stores usually talk you out of a .380, and sell you something more manly,..you know, the gun you carry for a week or so before leaving it at home? A .380 is always with you, like a wallet or car keys.
Exactly
Truth
Inside waist band carry
Dude this is so true
My gun store/training class actually encouraged a .380, and I'm glad I took their advice
FYI for everyone that doesn't know, a .380 is basically a 9mm short
Yup 👍🏾
Yup. Some 380 ammo made in Europe is usually labeled 9mm court.
It is -basically
9×17 to be exact
9x17 vs 9x19 and those short barrels on these guns not a big difference.
Folks, this is *EXACTLY* what you want from a self defense firearm. Very concealable and perfect performance. You do not want over penetration where the bullet continues on an hits an innocent bystander. You want that round to stay in your attacker (like a gift that keeps on giving) and go nowhere else. That was impressive!
00UncommonSense00 hear hear!!! 👍🏻
Respect brother from South Africa
I concur....
Wouldn't a .380 penetrate a person also though?
a walther pk380 sleeps in my bedroom and walks with me
I carry a Ruger LCP with hollow points all the time, even at home. While it isn't a "parabellum" round, it is still a 9mm, and will hurt like hell when it hits. With practice and good shot placement, I feel good carrying it. I also use the "extended" 7 round magazines, so I've got eight rounds available from the draw, plus the spare mag. The nice part is that most folks never see that I'm armed while I'm out and about. I'm just an old man who minds his own business and doesn't hassle anyone.
You sound like me!
I bet that the .380 ACP doesn't hurt at all...in the forehead.
@cmiller8492 He's saying that .380 is 9mm just not 9mm parabellum. It's 9mm short.
partriarch Amen brother. I carry an LCP custom with the seven round mag and a spare one in my weak side pocket. There's an old saying ... don't fuck with a guy too old to fight he just might kill you.
I like the lcp carried one as a back up gun before I retired I still carry it some times when I have to go places where deep concealment is needed
.380 does just fine
👍👍💯
Yes it does.
TAURUS .380 👍👍💪🏾💯
.380 is still deadly. I wouldn't wanna get hit by one......
Bobby Miller when people tell me ".380 sucks, people live after being shot by .380".... All I say is "wanna try it"?
Bobby Miller right that's so true I carry a 380 on a daily
Bullets kill your not the fucking terminator
A friend comitted suicide with 380....it works
I see it is a quality round the will make a 300lb man think twice about coming at you. I'm not hunting with it.
Im a pretty big guy, and i carry the same ruger lcp .380. Sure i get made fun of. I carry it 99% of the time as apposed to 70% with my full size pistol. Thats just me though. The best carry firearm is the one you actually carry. Peace my friends
I'm a former Marine and also carry the LCP. Just bought a Bodyguard for the safety, double strike capability and slide lock back after last round. Both are equally lethal and dependable, and easily concealed in a pocket.
@@utubetommy I feel the same way. I have multiple .45 (carry models), a really nice XD MOD.2 9mm, and some SIG Sauers, etc. and I find the bodyguard to be the most comfortable by far. I work in an office with multiple areas in the building and I am an owner so am bouncing around the building. I used to put my larger guns in my desk when I got to work because sitting with them on was uncomfortable and gave me a back ache. The bodyguard can be worn all day long and it's damn comfortable compared to the others. That alone makes it more useable if I should ever need it (there are over 30 different businesses in our building and you never know if a crazy will walk in).
A 380 is good lethal firearm. A lot of law enforcement carry them... detectives, non patrol assignments. Small, light weight, concealable. Never mind arguing about size, bullets, capacity. Whatever you choose, in a deadly confrontation...ANY firearm YOU HAVE will give you a survival chance.
My 100 lb wife uses my old 9 shot HR revolver for her house gun. She just doesn't care for autos and doesn't like the recoil and noise from the 38 Rossi I got for her. She shoots the 22 very well and can put rounds on target fast and accurately with it. I believe she is very well armed with that ole 22. As is your wife with her 380.
@@shadowwolf7622 I've often said the same thing. I have a 44 that I literally havent been satisfied with its accuracy/consistency since I bought it 6 years ago. So why carry a gun I hit with maybe once or twice. Or carry my 22 and drill a hole through the attacker placing all six shots right behind the previous shot 😄
@@ruger51995 So many people just can't see it is better to be armed with a caliber that they can deliver rapid, aimed fire with than a caliber they don't like to shoot and are not very good with.
No department in the US issues a .380.
@@soldozer They use it as a back up gun not a primary duty gun.
I hate how people are like "maybe you're a female" or " Maybe you're wearing gym shorts" Like there has to be a reason or excuse to carry a .380
Is it not possible for a guy to carry a .380 without some kind of reason/excuse? Or is there always an excuse to justify your lack of brohood/manliness or something?
WW1 began with a high profile .380 ACP kill
.380 ACP was developed by John Browning
If anyone thinks .380 ACP is inadequate, they can tell it to the ghosts of John Browning and all the _actual_ tough guys who have been killed by the venerable cartridge.
.380 is lethal. Trying to be responsible about a round in that you should be aware of over penitration to protect innocent, I believe the .380 is almost perfect for defensive carry.
I'm a guy carry a 380 acp Kel-tec daily. Great little gun drop in the pants or through it in the coat pocket and go. Got the two tone black and pink look to it do to I bought for more of the stay at home gun for the wife regenaly .
Lethal has NOTHING to do with stopping power. I don't care if a mugger dies 48 hours later in the ER after he guns me down with a .40 while I'm shooting him with an underpowered little round that didn't STOP him. Too many uneducated people pontificating about firearms these days, WAY too many
no i have no problem with a guy carrying a 380. most guys want a little more stopping power, but trust me a 380 in the right hands can bring someone down.
I underestimated the .380 until I saw a video a few years back, ( I can't find and wish I could). A guy set up I think it was 7 sheets of either 1/4" or 3/4" plywood, there was a space between each board. He shot several caliber handguns. He got to the .380, I kinda laughed to myself....to my utter shock and amazement the .380 went through 6 of the 7! If I remember correctly a 9mm maybe one or two other handguns did the same or went through the 7th sheet. My Wife and I own two .380's and carry them.
"I want a cannon that will go through a line of ten perps because I'm a man."
Me: Nah, I try to not go looking for trouble and a .380 will minimize my court costs.
I carry a Smith & Wesson .380 Bodyguard daily and feel safe and comfortable with the round . I grew up learning on revolvers and am happy with the heavy trigger . I also have respect for everyone to make their own choice and carry what they like . Be safe .
I carry a .380 and if you mess with me, you will find out how effective it is.
lol
Dumbass who the fuck wants to mess with you!?...stop trying to act all hard
You sound like you can’t fight one lick.
How accurate can you shoot past 10 yds? Legit question
@@corvetteman0714 Some of us cannot fight at all without risking death. Those of us with a cardiac device that can be easily deactivated or activated by a blow to the device just under the skin of our chest. My ICD would perhaps send repeated shocks to my heart that would kill or incapacitate me in a matter of seconds. So a little empathy for others that need a boost would be a better attitude. That's what a gun is supposed to do, to equalize the ability to defend oneself for those of us with a disadvantage when we are attacked.
Goes through 4 layers of t shirt, a slab of ribs, and the two layers of thick plastic vacuum seal bag - then penetrates 10 inches or more......And he's like - you shouldn't depend on that. WTF were you expecting??? How big are the assailants in your neighborhood. Must be fighting off Roman Gladiators and nomadic barbarians covered in armor left and right. That's one scary place you live. I would move if I were you.
Well, you gotta remember this is including the absence of skin, fat, and muscle, as well as the fact that he has all the time in the world to shoot a stationary target a couple of meters away. There are a lot of factors absent in this test that could limit the effectiveness of a .380 round.
The Goodest Boye the rib was intended to simulate the lack of skin bone and fat. Everything else you said has nothing to do with penetration.
@@howtowanderlust Those ribs had no fat on them, skin is much thicker than that, and in a self defense scenario, you wouldn't have that much time to take aim and hit your assailant where it would incapacitate or kill them. So no, everything I said does make a lot of sense.
@@Adam-of9kd That's why shot placement is important with any and all rounds. You keep talking about shot placement but a graze wound from a 44 magnum won't be any more lethal than a 380. I still stand by my original comment. This represents clothing bone and flesh just fine and still producing a lot of good penetration.
@@spirorevelis7100 A graze from a .44 is completely different than a graze from a .380. One is travelling much faster than the other, so the damage dealt will be much greater. And like I said, in a self defense scenario, the average person will be stressed and their shot placement will not be on point. Why you still mention shot placement after I've explained why it isn't a valid factor in testing the .380 I do not know. And I doubt somebody who's pure skin and bones would attempt to assualt anyone with a handgun. Your average assailant is much beefier that some muscle between bone.
I've daily carried a Glock 42 in .380 for about 3 years now.
Where I live it's t-shirt, cargo shorts, and flip-flops almost year round. I don't have the option to carry a big pistol or I would.
When I go really light, I carry my North American Arms Sidewinder in 22 Mag.
I'd rather be carrying something than nothing.
Not only is there a consideration of temperature but what type of clothes... Are you bumming around in your jeans or, are you wearing dress pants with coat or without a coat. The small 380 semi's work no matter how you are dressed..... speedo's not counting. Another consideration is the size of the mag's.. With the 380 mags being much smaller it is easy to carry an extra..... or TWO.
casualobserver77 I’ve had both of those pistols love them everybody I’ve talked to that pop pod it I ask where’s you gun in the truck I had to be stealthy it’s not a shooting range gun. Pocket guns have a place I loved the North American fold up grip in my watch pocket the glock 42 was to big L in my jeans I would buy a thinner 380
Chris Barnes the 42 was too big to conceal thinner from me is better I’m in public all day I don’t want anyone to know I got a gun the North American won
Chris Barnes sold it I’ve recently retired so everything changes in life so does carrying strategy I had a biz next to a gun store I’d look at people coming in with an L in there pocket glocks are wide even the single stack. Still got the North American fold up 22 mag watch pocket it all depends how visual you want to be the glock was a great gun well made got used to the trigger np
That north american arms 22 magnum on steriods , i would not want to get hit with one
I actually work in Trauma medicine. I'm a US Army combat medic, a volunteer civilian paramedic, and a premed student. I will tell you that there is, scientifically, no significant difference in any concealed carry round from .380 to .357 Magnum in terms of effective lethality.
The biggest determining factors in creating a positive outcome from a deadly force encounter are 1. Did you fire your weapon? & 2. Did you hit your assailant?. That's it. If you are shot at the biggest factors for your survival in order are 1. Did you get hit?, 2. How long until medical services arrive? 3. How many times were you hit? 4. Where were you hit? Caliber is not a factor in any of those questions on any side.
There is nearly no statistically significant difference in effectiveness, in terms of ending encounters or lethality, amongst common concealed carry rounds regarding self defense. The reasons for this are numerous. Most important is that getting shot hurts regardless of caliber. For most people it hurts enough you need only be shot 1 time to stop doing whatever it is you're doing. Second to that is that it's not about the size of hole, but where you place it. A .357 or a .380 to the wrist probably won't be a fatal wound and the difference in the size and power of the round isn't going to make a difference in lethality. That is to say that you will not be able to stopping power someone to death and the marginal differences in ftlbs (compared to a rifle or shotgun) is not going to make that big of a difference.
@@Steven-gv1ke , thank you ! Plus the 22 is both practical , and fun to shoot making one very proficient . They respond very well to suppressors also . . . . now the fellow you responded to who worked / works in a trama unit forgot to mention the lethality of the little 22 round nose round . Those tend to enter and ' run around ' making mess where ever they go . . . . I know our SF carried 22 cal auto's with silencers back in the day , and could ' point shoot ' very accurately at distance . Most preferred the 22 if things got busy as there was very little muzzle flash , noise or concussive evidence to give away your location to hostile contact . Most being down before they realised fire was being returned . Besides that Stoner was just damn noisy ! Just saying . . . . . Be well and thank you for your service .
@@addiumuppicus5738 i used to be a fan of 22LR until moisture ruined it for me.
Metal in the right ventricle of any caliber is not conducive to life.
You are 100 percent right with one exception and I base this on my fire fighter brother and his twin In law enforcement. 1. 45 rips flesh on exit others make holes. 2. Higher power projectiles with through and through penetrations causing an exit hole are much more lethal faster, greater shock to blood pressure I imagine. So a super hot 9mm or a full power .357 wad cutter or deep penetrator or defender or full power 10mm or 5.7 or 44 magnum that goes through and through makes a more lethal wound. According to what my brother has witnessed. The over penetration is the more lethal in shorter time in humans and in hunting too.
Tyler Peters you don’t know what you’re talking about .. the hydrostatic effects from a .380 are no were near that of a .357 which could be the difference between a glancing organ shot being fatal. Physics is calling bullshit on your fake medical word salad buddy :)
I know this video is over a year old, but I just found it - and it's spot on - as are many of the comments. It's not about the caliber, but the ammo - and more importantly, SHOT PLACEMENT. I carry a .380 whenever my clothing does not allow me to carry something larger and I NEVER feel 'under powered' - I know I can defend myself, my family, and others with just six rounds of .380 in most situations.
Now, about shot placement...how were you shooting high - that Bodyguard has a LASER on it!!! ;-P
Great video - Thanks!
Be well,
Don
You could be a little short of rounds, no matter the caliber, if there are more then one bad guy. With your permission I will recommend you keep extra magazines very, very close. Shoot straight, stay safe, pray for peace. Amen.
Later Model bodyguards do not have Laser!
You can shoot all the guns you want, but anyone who believes a .380 is tantamount to a non-lethal weapon, or is somehow "feminine, simply shows their ignorance when it comes to firearms. The "size matters" mentality is simply something invented by insecure guys who clearly seem to be overcompensating for something.
A .380 will kill an intruder the same way a 9mm, .45 caliber, or 40 caliber will. The only difference is bigger size equals bigger mess. Even a .22 will kill an intruder. These people who don't understand this, need to grow up.
Discussing a .380 as if it's a woman's gun, or ineffective, just means the person you're listening to knows very little and you should get your advice elsewhere.
That's not how that works. When demand goes down, prices go down. When demand goes up, prices go up.
Thats not how it works o.o
Oh we are insecure and brainless..... I may not be able to shoot distance with my lcp, but at 5 to 10 yards its deadly. May I never have to use it on another human being.
Agreed!
A .22 may very well kill an intruder, hopefully he bleeds out quick enough to stop him from killing the person being attacked. A direct shot to the heart with a .22 from 7 yards can leave more than enough time for an attacker to finish the job if he so desires. I'll give you this though...most people will run away from someone shooting them with a .22 (or any caliber) whether it kills them or not. And I'd rather have a .22 than have to resort to throwing rocks.
I love my Sig Sauer P238, Single action. Hardly any recoil, VERY accurate and concealable! Shot placement for a 380 is important too, as in all guns. These micro pistols are really for up close and personal.
Hmmm.. nice video. No fluff or BS, just a good practical "see for yourself" test. Good idea adding the ribs. The .380 is no slouch. Love the clear gel too. Thanks.
My pleasure, thank you for watching and enjoying the content.
I'm going to put My 45 years of sidearm experience and knowledge (both military and private self defense) up against this insecure child's 6 whole years and tell You, a .380 is not a Woman's weapon. .380's have been an acceptable tactical backup choice for law enforcement and military. Not going to explain any further, this guy is ridiculous.
If it's good enough to be a LEO backup gun, it's good enough to be a personal defense gun. I carry a .380 and have a 45 at home to defend the house. Oh and a Mossberg 500 which really is the first choice.
One weapon the Nazi's would issue their officers was a .32, CZ24 or 27 I think. And hopefully should one ever have to draw their weapon they might be able to curtail whatever activity they drew on without having to fire (something the "news" never reports)... And pretty much any gun will make a bad guy stop and think for a moment unless they're already shooting.... and they won't be thinking "what caliber is the good guy pointing at me". Edit: Additionally, should I carry I have my .380 Walther PPKs which is small enough to be comfortable but enough of a threat to hopefully stop aggression without having to fire, but still lethal enough in most circumstances. Besides, how many of us who can legally carry ever have to draw the gun? Why carry a boat anchor when the chances of ever taking it out of the belt in a situation are .01%?
Any Practical experience? Or just repeating talk.
Ya, a 380 directly to the head from an inch maybe... Otherwise.
Real life people.
@@glennbrymer4065 Wow. You're really stupid if you think a .380 has to be an inch away from your head. Jerry Miculek hit a target at 200 yards with a Bodyguard 380. If it can travel 200 yards with only a 3 foot drop it will kill you at 20 feet.
380 will do the job,but I look at it like pepper spray,if you miss you are in trouble and may lose your life. I'll take 357 .One shot stopping power. The name of the game is to eliminate the threat.
Thanks for the test! I'm impressed. I own a .380 pistol I rarely carry and the ammo you used for this demo. This is a confident builder.
Thanks for your test of the .380 acp. I'm impressed with you HST test. My EDC rotation ranges from 38 Special +P to .357 Magnum and 45 ACP. Yesterday I carried a Ruger LCP II and in the back of my mind wondered if it was enough. There are times when it is necessary to carry such a small pistol. I now feel much more confident that it will get the job done if needed. I live in Texas so heavy clothing isn't the issue it is in other places.
I am impressed with the ballistic gelatin results, I never though much of the .380, but now this has change my mind allot.
Totally agree. Was not expecting the rib shot to be that effective.
Thanks for taking the time out and setting everything up for the demonstration.
I have a 380 Beretta Pico with a Laser site.
I'm very happy with it, I use Hornady 90g XTP
I live in Florida, you very rarely see anyone wearing other than light clothing.
Thanks again, oh yea, the Pico shoots low and to the left, that's the reason for the laser.
Thank you for the kind words Edward! Glad you appreciate it. Much more to come.
Laser sight.
A site is a location, not a object.
I'm with you I think that's the best 380 round and is what I carry. Precision One test results are better but I haven't been able to find it.
Great video man. I’m impressed. Has actually made me realize that .380 is a viable option for a very light carry scenario.
Multiple studies have shown that the caliber makes very little difference in stopping an attacker, if the shots are on target. What's far more important than caliber, is getting shots off quickly and on target. A .380 in the right hands will get the job done.
Agreed
Went through that rib like butter! LOVE IT! Awesome! RIGHT ON!
Nice to see my carry ammo did so well, thanks for the test
The phrase is "consistent carry". These micro .380s are the guns that you will probably find yourself carrying more than you carry anything else. As for .380 effectiveness, John Browning developed .380 ACP for the Colt Pocket Pistol to satisfy the needs of police who were interested in the small automatic. It is commonly used as a police caliber overseas, and seems to be plenty effective. Want penetration? Use the FMJ or something like the Buffalo Bore lead flat point. Want expansion? You can use something like the HST, or the Critical Defense, or even go exotic with the Underwood/Lehigh Extreme Defense. Ammunition choice is still more important than caliber in this case. That being said, expect recoil like a .357 revolver with these very small, very light pocket guns.
whoobibi xtp are good.
Nope, no recoil whatsoever.
+Jake McCoy You are absolutely correct. I have a g42, g27 and a g17. I shoot a lot with all three at my own range and i'm not recoil sensitive at all. I can shoot more rapidly and with blazing follow up shots with the glock 42 as well as most of my friends that pick up the g42.
I have a G42, and it is not a pocket micro .380. It is larger and heavier than a Kahr CW380, Ruger LCP or Kel-Tec P3AT. Sure, the G42 is easier to shoot, quite nice by comparison. You pay for that with greater weight and size, yet don't get greater capacity. In fact, the G42 is as big or bigger than some single-stack 9s, like the DB9, PF9 or CM9. In any event, the smaller, thinner, lighter micro .380s I'm referring to do in fact have a sharp recoil impulse.
bersa thunder
First channel I've come across that actually has not only clear gel but its smooth as ice making for perfect visibility! Nice, got my sub for that reason alone! But also a great informative video.
Wow!!! Best slow-motion video on ballistic gell I've seen so far.
While working in a max security prison a inmate once told me that he had been shot three times with a .357, my reply was; "But not by me." Comment on how many you think have been killed with a 22LR?
Bottom line is not what you were hit with but where. 👹
The real Yooper agreed shot placement is key but your larger calibers have a lot more energy that can aid in making less then perfect placements become effective in stoping a person.
@@zack9912000 this is incorrect in reality as smaller grain bullets moving at higher velocities can produce ( and some on the market DO this ) more energy to deliver to a target with the overall limiting factor being the expansion that aids in dumping that energy into the target instead of passing it through. I.E. Liberty's Civil Defense 50Gr 9mm ammunition that can penetrate 3a body armor. Its all in how the cartridge is balanced. Most manufacturers however are not concerned with the minuscule returns the side market would bring from Min/Maxing cartridges for niche use so everyone sticks with whats "commonly accepted" and available instead of reality. Modern ballistics trumps all "size" arguments for the most part. ( minus something like .380 vs like a .950 JdJ .... HIGGGGHHHLLY unlikely a .380 could ever hope to match that EVER lol ).
@@zack9912000 OH !!! side note btw in a study done by ellefritz ( spelling ? you cna google it as it is pretty commonly used ) .380 is in the same category ( actually did BETTER if i recall ) and percentages of people "stopped" as the .45 for instance.
Headden Into Crypto only if they don’t punch through a target without dumping their energy. Seen this all the time with 9mm and 5.56. Speed isn’t everything. Slower moving rounds like the 45 for example don’t over penetrate unless we are talking about a new snake oil round that has poor ballistics. The 45 ACP are able to deliver the rounds full kinetic energy to the target as a subsonic round.
Again size does matter for certain jobs. The . 45acp, 10mm are one of the few semi auto pistol calibers capable of taking down medium to large animals. You don’t see or dare go hunting with .22, 25acp 380 or 9mm. For what ever the reason 9mm is all the rage again because of wild claims from trainers and it’s being more then dishonest when people claim all the calibers are the same or close enough.
@@zack9912000 OH OH AND LAST ONE I SWEAR !!!!! it also looked at FAILED attempts to stop an attacker that was shot and nearly all calibers performed the same ( minus the very small calibers like 22lr etc. ).
Excellent video, excellent quality. Pleasureable to watch and very informative
Thank you! Much appreciated kind words. WELCOME to GY6vids
I really appreciate this video. Many times I carry a Sig P238 in .380 auto just because it is easy to just throw it in my pocket and go. No worries about concealment or printing, or having to wear a cover shirt/jacket. Although I have Federal HST ammo in 9mm, I didn't even know they made it in .380. Now I want to try some. I actually have to. My Sig P238 just broke so I sent it back to the Sig Custom Shop for repairs, and I bought a Ruger LCP II to take it's place. However I use Buffalo Bore +P ammo in my P238, and the LCP II can't handle the +P ammo so I need to find ammo that it will handle, yet ammo that is effective. Anyway this video was awesome. Thanks again for the video.
Just went back and watched most of ur vids it just occurred to me how accurate and consistent you are with your shots hats off to you bro hate to get in a gunfight with you
LOL Why thank you. I appreciate the compliment...LOTS OF TRAINING.
When people tell me this round is no good or that round is no good I always ask if they would be OK to let me shoot them with one then?
So basically you're just admitting that you're not too bright. *_Any_* ammo can kill. But for self-defense ammo to be effective, it has to *_stop_* your attacker. And if your attacker is hyped up on adrenaline and/or drugs, simply killing them may not stop them before they get the chance to kill you back. Maybe next time someone tells you a certain round is no good, instead of being a smart ass, you could have an intelligent discussion and find out *_why_* they think it's no good.
I think, normally, to STOP an attacker, you have to kill them.
oruwatching your post sounds like your criteria for a good carry round is does someone want to be shot with it? Then add a BB gun to your list. I don't want to be shot with it so it meets your criteria. That's the logic you're using.
What amazes me is how people have lost their sense of humor.
i know, i thought it was funny
Awesome vid! I have a new found respect for the little ruger lcp that I keep around as a bug.
My kayaking gun
Got a ruger lcp myself.
I have a Ruger lcp custom with 7+1. I am extremely accurate up to 15 yards and more if I have too but most encounters will be much closer. Federal hst deadly
old time gun guy told me to carry fmj. Even in 9m he liked heavy for caliber fmj. He also said not to put anything on the gun that slows it down. He told me just to look at the back of the gun. Yes that would depend on distance, he wasn't talking about snipping anyone. He was former Shore Patrol, engineer, gun store owner, leather maker and one of the men that was instrumental on setting up our county gun range. He is well respected by locals and all get a laugh when his name comes up because no matter what weapon looked at in his store he would say; Yeah baby, that's the one you need it's a good one. thank you for your video.
I carry a G42 with this ammo every day
Done few backyard tests and very pleased compared to other 380’s I’ve tested.
I do hvac service work and love the size of it carrying appendix 👍
Good video
A lot of people hate on 380 saying things like you should of just bought a 9 mill but here's a fun fact in some places around the world 380 is known as 9 millimeter short
Correct
It's the same caliber just in a more compact size with less gun powder. Same as a .38 cal basically. A .380, will get you out of 99% of the shit you'll ever run into, unless you like to hang out around the shitty dangerous areas where you live.
Hey Andrew, how about trying some underwood loads with the extreme defender bullets. Same test and same caliber.
Excellent production quality. I like how you showed that expanded round that exited the top of the gel. Good stuff.
I spent time awhile back with a unit in North Africa. We were armed with 9MM short. The gunnery sgt. was fond of his 1911 .45 caliber, but explained that you use what you have. He explained that shot placement was very important and to disregard stopping power. Keep shooting until the assailant stops.
Best ballistic test I've seen in a long time!
Thank you. Welcome to GY6vids
JESUS is GOD Nice! Let me know how you like it.
You just got yourself a subscriber with the ballistics visual! Thank you for showing us exactly what it looks like & good tips on seasons to carry the .380. Was that a S&W EZ .380?
Thank you! Welcome to GY6vids, no it's a Bodyguard
No, it wasn't. A Smith EZ is quite large for a 380.
This is a great video. Excellent camera work and nice to see such clear gel.
I carry a bersa thunder 380 for my edc . 8+1 magazine, 3.5 inch barrel (higher muzzle velocity than your normal shorter barreled pocket pistols, hits harder penetrates deeper) paired with underwood extreme defender ammunition. I have no doubts in its capabilities and performance for protecting me. Conceals exceptionally well, comfortable, reliable and accurate.
Damn that's a nice camera
Outstanding video. Thanks for posting.
Smith an Wesson M&P bodyguard! Difficult trigger pull to get used to for some but I love it! Awesome video bro!!
Bro! I definitely appreciate your vids with the ribs. You are the only one who I know that does It, or started it. But, can you please do some vids shooting the rack and gel block out at distance. Or typical distances that most people will face when using a specific firearm. It would actually be even cooler if you can do some long distance shots, mimicking what our military snipers may be facing out in the middle East with a Barret or 338 Lapua vs Ribs and Gel block.
I mentioned it in one of my older ballistic gel videos. I will be doing it, already have storyboarding drawn up for it. The hardest thing was figuring out how to get the High Speed Camera shots that far away without losing Data Signal from the Camera to the Trigger switch back to where I'm shooting(Due to not wanting ANYONE down range trying to capture the shot). I figured it out and it will happen;-) Ballistic Gel Tests always cost a tremendous amount of money $300-$500 just for the Gel at minimum, so takes time to save up production costs for all of it.
jack suquett watch a guy named Paul Harrell
I work in EMS. This round can get the job done.
Excellent video! Great to see the clear gel being used.
Very good video! I carry a Beretta 13 shot 380 in summer and usually a Para Ordnance P12-45 in winter. 1st time watcher of your videos!
When I was in knife fighting training they said it only took 3 inches of penetration to reach vital organs. But somehow with a pistol you need 11 inches? The fact is, you put 2 or 3 rounds of .380 into a perpetrator, and they'll find other priorities if they survive, 99% of the time.
Interestingly enough, when Europe was free, the most popular concealed carry round was .32 auto. If you "need" more than .380, you should practice shooting alot more. You can't just close your eyes and yank the trigger, you need to shoot something vital. Guns aren't magic, they kill by blood loss or hitting vitals. And for all those "but .45 auto" guys out there, there are documented cases of 30-06 and 12 guage failing to stop an opponent too, nothing in life is guaranteed, but bullet placement narrows the probability of errors.
The gel really doesn't represent human tissue. It's just a measuring standard that the FBI used to determine what they needed. The FBI standards are for LEO not private carry.
For decades the German Polizei carried Walther PP in 32. That lasted till the 90s.
I have many calibers, but when you have a gut and love handles, it is simply more comfortable to slip the LCP in my front pocket than carry a larger pistol in my waistband. If I am in a situation that would require more firepower and rounds...I am probably fucked anyway lol.
Nice shooting Tex! The .380 is a surprising cartridge that is for sure.
I liked videos that are simple and just straight to the point not all of that old scientific data let me see for myself thank you bro for making this video as I do carry 380 as well.
If you're concerned about a lack of penetration, then use FMJ's. FMJ's in .380 will go through the ribs, shirt layers, and the full gel block in .380. It's ridiculous to say that you carry 9mm in winter because you want to ensure deeper penetration. You only give up penetration with a hollow point, not an FMJ. If you just carry FMJ's in .380, you are more likely to have an overpenetration problem than under. What, is going through a metal door at 10 yards not enough penetration for you in .380?
El Criticon IMO, FMJ .380 ammo just has too much penetration to be safe for carry. It's necessary for .32 ACP and lower, but you're liable to hit an innocent person with a pass through FMJ .380 projectile.
No. A hollow point 9mm should be used because it won't over penetrate and it will extert a lot more energy into the target
I don't worry about over-penetration one little bit when carrying.
sycamorebacker1 Do you have a good civil suit attorney on retainer? Over pen will ruin your life.
Not something I ever worry about. The odds are many times greater that one would MISS his target and hit a bystander. And the odds of either are near zero. I'm a 1000 times more likely to hurt another person in an auto accident.
REALLY!?
My wife carries a 22 pocket gun and there is NO WAY I'd stand front of her with 10 rds in her magazine... or even 1 round.
What kind of 22 im looking for a 22 to carry dont know what to go with
@@Doobiiie710 a revolver might be a good option for her. Ruger and Smith season also make 22lr pistols
Awesome video brother. Love the channel, Keep’em coming.
great video with clear ballistics gel. the answer is quite obvious.
Shot placement is the most important thing! How many times have I read of someone getting shot in the chest by a 22lr and dying instantly. Never mind the head!
Nanoman, I have been saying the same thing for years! Glad to see someone shares my view of things. .380 rocks with the correct ammo. Takes some time, money and effort but well worth it! Thanks for your comment.
Nanoman , THANK YOU!! Folks knock the 22s & lil cartriges but shouldnt. Even an ice pick in the heart kills. Had the 1st 2 LCPs and they really sucked. Got the LCP II & Ruger FINALLY got it right. Awesome lil mouse gun. Mine is actually my most accurate point shooter. 7 yds all in the head sized critical zone rapid fire no sights. Does kick but that just resets my trigger faster for faster follow up shots. Amazingly short reset too.
A chest shot is almost NEVER an instant death. That only happens with a direct hit to the "T" zone of critical life supporting centers of the brainstem, or a hit to the cervical spinal cord.
tl;dr: this vid was meant for those who are looking for a smaller, more cost-efficient form of self-defense. Not the aces in the comments
People seem to be missing the point of the video:
Yes, shot placement may make caliber irrelevant but this video focuses on a situation where:
1) the carrier requires a smaller pistol favoring concealment over firepower. Which is different than what is mostly shown on this channel.
2) demonstrating penetration compared to the usual .45 acp rounds. for those who use this channel to learn
3) smaller rounds and firearms are also typically cheaper but it is being shown that reduced caliber/cost does not hinder performance necessarily.
JMcRage Good analysis. My Mom's best friend is a tiny little slip of a girl - probably doesn't weigh 100 lbs soaking wet. While she *can* shoot a .45 (she's shot my Mom's .45 revolver and her 1911), she would never feel comfortable carrying one or trying to use it in a crisis. Her weapon of choice that she is comfortable with actually IS a .308 compact. It fits well in her tiny little hands, and she's very accurate with it.
It might make her feel good but in a gunfight she may very well get killed. If she can carry that, she can carry a 9MM +P which is a world apart
I don't need to, it's a proven fact. Velocity matters
Stefano Dogg i also recommend a 9mm over a 380 after having dispatched 2 200lb hogs in a trap with these HST in a g42 a few days ago. I shot a boar square between the eyes that deflected downward through the chin and exited making him pretty mad. The next shot i put in his front chest and he went down with a minute of kicking. He charged me twice through the cage. The other one got one round to the neck that shattered the spine but deflected out the top of the head DRT. I switched to my .40 afterwards.
There speaks field experience which I share. Similar to you here, just one story.. I hit a poor little large dog breed puppy witth my 4 x 4, she ran right in front of me. Maybe 14 weeks old.. her back was broken and she dragged herself off the road about 50 feet. I had to put her down with my .45 ACP full size 1911.. it took 3 state of the art +P hollowpoints through the skull to finish her. Now add agression and forward momentum like your hogs and it gets dicey. Lots of internet commandoes whose experience is limited to watching gel tests and hearing from "experts" about how the .380 is a suitable self defense caliber, but no modern military issues a .380 for good reason
That little bodyguard is still one of the sleekest pocket pistols to this day
Good video and what a great great camera! I certainly carry my LCPII when I can't easily carry a full 9mm, and I never feel unprotected with it. I'm waiting for the crazy good Fed Hydra Shok Deep to come out in .380.
I have been carrying extreme penetrators in mine.maybe you could test them in 380?Thanks
Anthony B D They'd go through the block completely and probably half way into a second. Too much imo.
test it with the liberty self defense rounds. i bet every one that talks bad about a .380 will not let someone shoot at them with that round or any other for that matter.
@First Last ive had no problem with that. shot a empty grill tank with my wifes .380 & went through both sides & into the ground.
Thank you! I just purchased a S&W Bodyguard. It’s a nice piece. Nice demo
Sometimes you feel like gym shorts and t-shirt and this gun fits that attire nicely(in a pocket w/ soft holster). It’s a great weapon. It took a little bit for me to get proficient with it. The grip took some getting used to. I use Critical Defense (FTX) rounds while a carry.
Great vid! Subscribed.
9mm in the winter. 380 ACP in the summer.
If you look at the high speed camera, I would say the jell caused the bullet to move back. Maybe up to 2". I would have never expected more penetration with the shirt and ribs in the way!! I like your test
Mark Telep The heavy clothing partially fills the hollowpoint cavity, preventing rapid and complete expansion. The rib bone deformed the bullet petals and caused the same effect. Bare gel causes rapid, full opening of the projectile which creates the largest cavity and least amount of penetration.
Always love your videos! Keep em coming!
At the end of the day shot placement is everything
Can you do this test within feet of the target, maybe even point blank? I don't think bad guy will be that far away when a situation goes down.
Derail07 this is to test the effectiveness of the weapon if it's effective long range it'll be better close up
I don't think 10 feet will cause that much of a velocity drop. Keep in mind the Tueller principle. A threat with a knife or other close range weapon can cover about 20 feet in the time it takes to draw and fire a gun. You may need to fire further than point blank. Now REALLY point blank, as in muzzle touching the body, will substantially increasing wounding effects. The combustion gasses inflate the temporary cavity greatly and contribute to the permanent cavity as well.
Common sense says if you are going to shoot it out of the top of the block, then get closer.
In all my 62 years I've never met anyone who says the 380 is inadequate for self defense that's willing to be shot by one. You would think a 380 is just going to bounce off the bad guy's chest like Superman!
specops56 why'd anyone prefer 380 instead of 9mm? There's no reason for that! 380 is much less powerful than 9mm or .357 magnum and even a .38 spl is more powerful!
using your logic I don't understand why people don't carry 20 mm canon. The .380 is much smaller, lighter, concealable, and has less recoil than an equivalent 9 mm, making it more likely to be carried and to get a hit.
Well done ! I like the expansion on the bullets , look like a good choice .. I've been shooting
handguns for 67 years , and have found it takes about 300 rounds to get a good feel for
where the gun points coming out of the holster ... The .380 will do the job , if put in the right place ..
Thanks for the video. It makes me worry less about my .380. I carry one because I have small hands, and at age 73, a lot of arthritis and some macular degeneration in my dominant eye. My weapon of choice is a Bersa Thunder equipped with Crimson Trace laser grips and loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. It gets the job done at the range and I pray every day that I never have to draw it anywhere else.
I was a paramedic for many years and saw gunshot wounds from just about every caliber. Here's the thing...you don't really know what is going to happen with any caliber. There are many many factors other than ballistic ratings of ammo. I have seen patients survive being shot 10 times by a .40 cal and I have seen people die of a single .25 caliber GSW. I do know this, I would not, under any circumstances want to be shot by any of them. Carry what you will carry. As others have posted here, the Underwood Extreme Penetrator has leveled the playing field when it comes to carrying a a micro .380 vs a sub-compact 9mm.
I remember a reading documented story many years ago about a Dad killing a black bear with a pellet rifle when attacked during a family camping trip. The shot was to the head and the bear dropped before doing any damage. Shot placement is critical, even with a 500 magnum. I would rather carry a 500 mag, but I just can't seem to find a good appendix IWB holster for it. So I carry a 380 instead (with Underwood extreme penetrator ammo) and practice shot placement. I recently saw a RUclips video about a hunter dropping a brown bear in Alaska with a 9mm last year and that is also documented.
Peter Rock You're right,Shot Placement is Key!!
Peter Rock Just carry the 500 in a shoulder holster under your favourite sport coat. Nothing like pullin' Ol' Bessie out of your jacket to put the fear of God in your attacker!
Horse fuckin shit pellet gun my balls
576575s , Entirely possible bud. Eye, nose or just under the ear w a 22 short will kill a bear. Pellet gun was prob a 22 cal which is at least as powerful as a 22 short. The 5mm sheriton pump up reaches 22 LR velocities. GRANTED, I wouldnt want to put my life on the line but the ballistics ARE there. Up close in bear attack range very plausable.
Federal are kick ass rounds, love em!! Nice video my friend!!!
.380 has always been a viable option for EDC, it has distinct advantages, but has a few disadvantages as well. Great visual demonstration, great testing, nice review.
Try Precision One 90 grain XTP
Bro I missed you. It's been a while 😪
just bought a Browning black label 1911 380. it will be my go to edc. my full size 1911 is my favorite gun in my collection and it is concealable but it gets heavy after a while. if the 380 shoots as good as the 45 i will be very happy. good shooting and stay safe.
Thank-you -for the information-very good to know-keep it coming-thxs
people didnt magically evolve into bullet sponges. of course its lethal!
Lehigh bullets in underwood ammo will outperform the Federal. Pricy but worth the money if 380 is your choice carry gun.
agreed
Lehigh and Underwood ammo I use is their standard load not +p in SW 380'ez and LCP. +p maybe ok in Glock 42 but always need to test ammo in your gun.🔫🇺🇸👍
Steve Johnson No such thing as an official +P pressure rating. When you buy ammo labeled ".380 +P" you can only know that it's over what SAAMI specifies and that it may not be safe to fire. It could be loaded up to anything. +P+ ammo is the same; no such thing as a regulated +P+ pressure. Example: Federal 9BPLE 9mm +P+ is over the +P pressure rating and could be unsafe in many guns.
Yep! You're right.
The ribs sped the round up. Lol
That bodyguard is a summer gun.
Something to drop in your pocket with your I phone.
Good vid.
Nice editing and slow-mo captures.
Thank you very much!
0:32 "There are a lot of females out there that like to carry .380 auto"
I looked down at the P238 on my belt and I think my dick went inside out xD
But seriously, recoil wasn't my issue - it was size. You can't get a 9mm that's 16 oz fully loaded and small enough to look like keys in the pocket of "business casual" dress pants. I'd rather have a .380 in my pocket than a 9 that I leave at home because it's uncomfortable to carry. With the right ammo, it's still quite effective. Great video!
The 9m sig version isnt much bigger still nice size
@@daddun2111 I would carry the 9mm P938 if I could, but in CA they're harder to come by.
.380 is better than people give it credit for. It's a great SD round, especially for smaller shooters. You can get the shots on target very easily.
davidca96 for those who have physically handicaps absolutely, yet the 380 is not as effective and is a crap shoot if it will do anything to actually stop the threat. If the bad guy can move then the threat isn’t over
Thanks for “clear” ballistics gel. BTW - Underwood manufactures what is known as “Extreme Defender” monolithic ammunition that should really be checked out. In tests on You Tube it out performs all hollow point ammunition. It is also “barrier blind.” I carry it. 👍
The slow motion footage is awesome!
