This head-to-head comparison of Toonly vs. Vyond takes into account 10 key factors that I think are crucial to know before you subscribe to anything:
CHAPTERS
0. Intro (0:00)
1. Video Templates (0:55)
2. Speed of Interface (2:23)
3. Libraries (3:24)
4. Character Creator (5:09)
5. Lip Sync (6:06)
6. Combining Actions (7:02)
7. Video Import (8:06)
8. Playhead vs. Motion Path (9:16)
9. Aesthetics (10:23)
10. Price (11:10)
It's hard to figure out what the best animation tool is. As you probably know, there are quite a few options out there by now.
So, why look into Toonly and Vyond? I think that these two animation makers are the most visible and dominant on the market.
Therefore, it's worth putting each explainer tool to the test; how does the aggressively-marketed Toonly hold up against the industry-favorite Vyond?
First, I dive into basic need-to-haves like useful video templates, user interface, and assorted libraries of characters, backgrounds, props, etc. Of course, with loads of Toonly video examples and Vyond video examples.
Then, I move on to how you work with Characters; character creators, lip-sync, and combine multiple actions into a series of movements.
Lastly, I present you with my take on more advanced features and some personal preferences. These relate to video import, play-head/motion paths, and the aesthetics of the animation styles.
Price is a big concern for small businesses that are researching explainer tools, and I conclude that Toonly is a good, affordable option, if you don't want to pay the premium of Vyond.
Make sure to do a bit of research yourself-by checking out the Toonly FAQ and Vyond Template Library (direct links up top).

Again thank you! I haven't decided the tool yet but your videos have by far made my search a lot more manageable.
Glad to hear that - what tools are you considering? Or have you decided already?
Fantastic work! Thank you for putting this together Rued.
Thanks a lot for your appreciation ✌🏻
Hello Rued, im here just want to say, Thank You. Your video is Awesome, very detaill, systematic, and to the point. Thank you for spending your time to explain this to us. Have a good day
Thanks, Rued! Very informative. I use the basic version of Vyond. Love it!
You're welcome. Glad to hear you liked it. Okay, cool - I also find the Whiteboard and Business Friendly styles more than enough-but still have an aesthetics preference for the Contemporary style 🤗
Thank you for the thorough and great comparison. Great job!!
That was PERFECT! Answered a lot of my questions - THANKS!
It’s clear that you invest a lot of time and thought into your videos. Inspiring. Well done.
Super vidéo, très bien expliquée et très complète. Bravo !
Hi Rued. Thanks for sharing this comparison. That was very helpful. I'm struggling to decide which tool I should use for my video needs as a freelancer in graphics and web design. If I had talent, budget and time, I would go with Adobe After Effects, but I need a slick tool to do some explainers and animated whiteboards. Vyond is too expensive for me. Toonly could be an option. I will have a look at your other reviews to have more information. Thanks again and be well! 🍀
Hey Rued! This was great! Love the effort you put in. Surprised you don't have a million subs yet!! Much love from India!
Thanks a lot - and yeah, me too; where are all those subscribers?! 😆 I think my area of expertise is a bit too narrow for the millions to come rolling in..
Rued, as a beginner in this field, I found the style and content of this comparison video to be amazingly useful. It goes into just enough detail on the functionality of each product, to help me decide what to go for. Thank you so much. I will check out your other videos now.
Thank you for the feedback - very glad to hear you got value out of it.
Thank you for the very informative video. This was helpful in every way!
Awesome. Thank you for putting this together. Helpful.
Good to hear - thanks !
Thank you so much for this! Very very helpful information!
You are so very welcome. Any works in progress at your end? :)
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time.
Thank YOU for taking the time watching my stuff :)
This is a great video. You explained the pros and cons so well. I am now very interested in Vyond. The biggest downside from what I can see, however, is not supporting multiple animations per scene, and the price. I will have to think since I am new to explainer video software.
If you take this course, www.ruedriis.com/go-beyond-vyond, you'll both learn how to use multiple actions per scene AND get a discount for Vyond, so it'll solve both your problems 🤗
Totally agree. I have used Adobe's Character Animator as well as Animaker, and there is no limit to how many avatar actions you can use in one scene. And I work for a very small non-profit organization with a limited budget, so the cost of Vyond (or Animaker) is daunting. Even the cost of Rued's training is prohibitive for me.
Great review, helped me a lot, thx so much
You're very welcome - glad you liked it 🤗
Rued
Thank you for your knowledgeable and professional insight. Well done!
Thanks Frank 🙏🏻
Thank you. Your video does help a lot to chose one.
Happy to hear that. Have you decided? And done any projects you can share?
Genius way of reviewing, genius mate!
Thanks. Excellent reviews
Exactly the doubt I had. Thank you very much for taking the time to help others! 👏👏👏
You’re welcome. So, did you go ahead with one of them! :)

thanks for the help
Thank you, this is great!
Thanks! 🙏🏻
Does it mean that we can't you combination usual video + toonly, like you did in this video combining video and Vyond
The pricing is a big blow for Vyond. I'm ok with paying $49 but still having a watermark. That's almost a minus 2-star for me. I mean $49 and still exporting a watermark takes a lot of value on how professional the video looks. If it was used for a business it just calls out cheap quality even if the aesthetics of the characters are better. Thank you for the information
I agree - that's not okay. Essentially, they don't want you onboard unless you are ready to pay real money for a Premium or Professional subscription. That's just the way it is and what we have to accept..
@@RuedRiisCom thanks for the feedback. I may only use it for 1 promo video I’ll put together myself. But the combination of time and a monthly cost upgrade without watermark to produce a video will still be more affordable than outsourcing. When I get round to this video I will be sure to use your affiliate link. I appreciate your information.
thanks for your deep analyzing
You're welcome!
Thanks bro..!!
Nice video:)
Thanks for the video, you said everything I don't think toonly anymore
Okay, good :)
Thank You
Im so greatfull for your comparison that was well explained,
can you please tell us where can we find a complete video explainer done by Vyond so we can see how it looks like
Hmm, my RUclips channel.. ? :)
@@RuedRiisCom haha do you have specific one you like? cause there is a very diverse and woderful videos all around the channel, if you could provide me with link that will be great
@@yofi2614 It’s called “Vyond examples” :)
Very helpful, particularly because Toonly doesn't allow a free trial. I love Vyond but as a freshly graduated, newly minted ID, I really can't afford the monthly fee at this point. Trying to decide if the $67 Toonly is worthwhile for me or if I should just hold out for Vyond...or a job offer, lol.
I think they do discounts for students/graduates .. maybe if you write them and ask?
Otherwise you can use RUED15 to slice off 15% of the yearly deals. If you bet on Vyond as your tool of choice.
Wow lovely video 😊
Thanks for the compliment. I'll strive to become better and better and put more and more time and energy into each one!
Hey Rued, I got a quick question for you, what software should I go for if I want to make inspirational and motivational videos. Looking forward to your response
I would buy ScreenFlow and their stock library. It's full of things you need for motivational videos like video clips, music, etc.
Thank you so very much for taking your precious time to respond to my question. You're greatly appreciated man
Hi nice video, I'm interested in making 4-5sec animations like those you would get from Final Fantasy Summons (game) do you have any suggestions on how it can be done? Thanks.
I don’t know that format, sorry.
Great comparison. I wanted to know which of these two services allows clicking on answers within the video. I want to create training videos with questions and staff answer possible answers within the video. Is this possible with these two services or do I need a different service? Thank you
You need a LMS platform of some sort. To host your videos within a system that allows for clicks, branching and tracking. Many use Articulate as a platform :)
Thanks Rued, for the excellent review. I have a question. Do I have to pay an extra fee of 99 dollar every-time I download a video for a client (third part)? I don't understand what they mean with third part? Could you explain it to me? Thank you!
Yes. Every time you want to sell a video to a customer of yours - e.g. as an agency or freelancer - you pay the Transfer Rights fee to Vyond.
@@RuedRiisCom No problem ;-). Thanks for your discount !. I ordered this wonderful program.
bro..i have a doubt..do we have an option to remove/disappear an element after a fixed number of seconds without using scribble option or overwriting with some other elements??
In Toonly, you mean? Sure.
I am curious can I make 90 minute animated video in vyond? Thanks for your tutorial ❤
Thank you Rued,
Lots of great info.
I was about to purchase Vyond, when I clicked on the terms of service and found this term, "No right or license is granted to display or perform any Video (in whole or in part), over any of broadcast, cable, satellite television or subscription-based or pay-per-download over-the-top (OTT) platforms or in any public performance (i.e., including, without limitation, exhibition over the Internet)."
Sounds like you can't use your video creations for RUclips videos. Is that what it sounds like to you? I wanted it specifically for my RUclips videos. That is why I am asking.
Thank you!
Naomi
Is it possible that you’ve made the mistake of pasting parts of an old Terms of Service text? I read the latest one from 2021 and don’t see the sentence about Internet.
“No right or license is granted to display or perform any Video (in whole or in part), over any of broadcast, cable, satellite television or subscription-based or pay-per-download over-the-top (OTT) platforms.”
But then again, you’re lawyer, so correct me if I’m wrong. Then I’ll look more into it.
@@RuedRiisCom Thank you for your response. I believe it is up to date as it popped up before I finalized the purchase. It was in the restrictions section of the terms.
Anyway, thank you again!
Naomi
Couple of questions about Vyond:
Can you also create (draw) your own characters to use instead of using their templates?
Also, for lip synching, can it be done for two characters in the same video or just one at a time? Thank you in advance.
No, and yes :)
Thank you for the quick reply!
12.10 wher can i find it ?
So if I am using 100% my own images toonly would be better in terms of cost?
Good video bro
Thanks a lot!
Hello. Thanks for sharing this video. There is a way to compare Vyond vs Animaker? 👍😀
You’re welcome. Yes, that was actually the next thing I wanted to look into. I hear good things about Animaker, so let’s see how it holds up 🤗
@@RuedRiisCom tks for your feedback, I did some test with Animaker and is fast and cheaper than Vyond. Have a great weekend 👍😀
Thanks for the video. Please has there been any new updates since this video was made?
Sure - I'll be looking into any updates very soon.
Well done thanx! Q. Could I use either of these tools to make non video instructional slides. ?
Sure, that’s a possibility too.
@@RuedRiisCom like could I create scenes and save them as a PDF or other files?
Very true. I agree.
Glad to hear that 😉
Can I use toonly videos for RUclips monetization
Sure, as long as your content is original :)
what about Studio Sparko Scribelyl vs Toonly vs
Can't compare vyond with any other online software out there...toonly is just fine for creating powerpoint style videos that have no personality while in Vyond, things go beyond:)
I agree, but still wanted to compare the tools on a number of things-instead of writing Toonly off completely 😌
i agree with you :)
That's good to hear!
Exactly what i want to differentiate
Lucky, then :) Thanks for commenting 🙏
@@RuedRiisCom Can you make review video of Create Studio ?
How did you make your intro?? Its nice
I made it using PlaceIt - you customize it then buy it in the platform. Real easy and nice.
So can either tool do facial expressions? Seemed to have missed this in your run down.
Sure ✌🏻
Oh it seemed to be a feature request on th Toonly site - so they’ve implemented it?
Also Compatibility:
VyondD works smoothly from Firefox browser. So, Mac, Linux, Android, ChromeOS, Windows all work the same, even when you run on nonstandard hardware like, say, a Raspberry Pi.
Toonly... Well, yeah. Get yourself an x86-64 Windows box, else you're out of luck. Wine is a chance, but I wouldn't count on it.
Can i change emotions of the characters ? Like sadness
Sure, they have a whole series of expressions that you can play around with.
If I buy the annual version of viyond, if they raise the price the following year, will I still pay the price I paid or will they raise the price too?
I’m pretty positive you keep your price, but to know for sure, you have to ask them.
@@RuedRiisCom Thanks, do you have a discount or something like that?
@@EconomiaDesdeCasa I sure do; you find it on my blog (in the sidebar): www.ruedriis.com/blog
@@RuedRiisCom they replied and told me that the price would go up 😔.
@@RuedRiisCom thanks for the discount
Is it possible to create videos with Vyond for my clients or it needs to pay extra toVyond for creating those for a third party? Please let me know.
Yes. There's a reseller fee of $99 per video.
@@RuedRiisCom I recall you were comapring these requirements on one of your videos - does toonely do the same? I believe on some extend, they allow to re-sell it but not on basic license? Let me know if you happen to remember this as I didnt find any info on toonly - thanks!
Do you have a recent comparison video of these two for 2023? ❤
Sure here’s the quick version: Vyond is still great, getting better, and Toonly is still okay.
Hey man great video! I also make animated software tutorials, not many people are covering these topics 😊.
Great, just checked out your channel and looks good. Will have to research Animaker more in the future :)
I have Toonly and its just too limited in terms of characters, basically every Toonly video has the same characters wearing the same clothes. Also another annoying thing is, you can only chose 1 action at a time.
I’d be interested to know how they both score after 2 years of feature updates
You’re right, I should update these asap 👌🏻
@@RuedRiisCom Yes please!
Why didnt see this vedio before I bought Toonly. Thanks
🤗
Damn, I wish I have watched this video earlier because I already bought Toonly. Needless to say, if only Vyond has that Lifetime payment option like Toonly has, that would be great.
I paid Toonly a lifetime subscription. Including all plugins I spent less than $200
Hope you enjoy using it ! :)
To Toonly is more friendly, no? Thank you for your video
Hi Rued, vyond charges freelancers $99 if they wish to transfer the rights of a video to a client. Does toonly have similar fees? For me vyond is just not a financially feasible choice because of this fee!
I understand. Watch my video on how to get past this challenge.
@@RuedRiisCom I can’t find your video on overcoming this challenge. Can you give me the title or link?
In these cases is where I call this software programs "American Software". Why? For people who live outside the United States, the prices are way too high. $159 in my country = $3180 which is almost my salary at month
One point to Toonly: characters moviment trimming. I can't do this on Vyond.
One point to Vyond: ir works online. Toonly has to be downloaded.
Good pointers. Vyond’s movements can be trimmed - with a workaround. And some prefer the offline option. So it’s hard to give these points 🤗👍🏻
Doodly VS Vyond also please!!
I’ll have to look into that, yes!
Vtoon or vyond?
Toonly does have video templates now
Please how do I make wonderful videos like animal videos
I guess it's so much better to use an animation instead of my cursed head videos!
Vyond is costly monthly subscription have to be purchased of the software Toonly offers one time fee
you so smart
Thank you! I try my best to keep learning and sharing those insights 🙏
@@RuedRiisCom i’ll try
The problems I see with Vyond are the cost and maybe how easy it is for a beginner to use it... considering that you have an almost 500$ course on how to use it suggests that it's not that easy to use and also adds to the total cost. When paying 160$ a month for a service I'm expecting to get useful videos on how to use it in that price.
I think you are doing a great job in promoting Vyond and maybe in selling your course.
I'd recommend to any of the viewers to take your information with a grain of salt and try the apps/platforms themselves before deciding to buy any of the plans.
Thank you for your info and best of luck
Summary: Vyond = monthly subscription, Toonly = one time payment + upgrades. Am I correct?
Content created by these two programs are demonitized though.
It's not true. I made $10k+ last year on RUclips ads on this kind of content.
i don't use vyond i only use wrapper offline cause its kind of like the old vyond legacy but i'll say vyond is better
What you don't mention is that this piece of software is extremely expensive!!
Mycket bra
you forgot to mention how vyond is a ripoff with a monthly fee, toonly is getting better but well worth is versus a monthly fee, yeah you get templates as long as you pay monthly
Sure, it does cost more, but you also get a premium tool, I think. What tools are you using at the moment? Any recommendations?
WOW... Imagine paying $50 a month for a program that still embeds their watermark... Watermarking is almost ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS for free versions of a product.
Yeah it’s an interesting pricing model :)
Vyond is for grounded videos, toonly is for school projects
I don't think this is a fair comparison at all. To make it fair you have to give toonly 7 more stars for their price tag. You are comparing photoshop with ms paint, ofc ms paint only gets 1 star for the price and loses everything else. I don't even understand how you got the idea to compare a 999 USD /year program vs a 69 USD lifetime program and make it sound like you are proud of finding all the differences. Huge thumbs down for this video.
Thanks for the feedback, and fair point. Although, I made this video because it is highly requested by people searching online who don't know how these tools hold up against each other. So the premise for the huge thumbs down is a little thin, and you're welcome to not watch my videos, if you don't think their subject matter is of any interest to you 🤗
