According to the book, they had only one comfortable bed. So the four grandparents shared it.
Separate beds for sleeping is quite a new thing, it used to be only for highborn. Most families shared bed.
growing up my every time we watched this in the 70s my mom got the biggest kick out of all the grand parents all in the same bed.
I'll say this...for as poor as they supposedly were...thats a HUGE bed, likely the nicest thing they had!

My husband and I were watching the real movie the other day, and I said that it always bothered me that the Grandpa could jump and dance around all of a sudden. If that were me, I would have knocked him on his butt for making me and my mother work so hard! I'm glad to see that there are others who have noticed that as well. So funny!!!!
Plus how he just assumed he was going to the factory. Maybe Charlie wanted to bring his mum! Sheesh!

They weren't in bed because they have polio. They never give a reason - other than being old & poor - that they're all in bed every day all day.
The whole thing with all 4 grandparents living in 1 bed until Charlie finds a ticket at which point Grandpa Joe springs up & is suddenly fine... is directly from the book by Roald Dahl the movie is based on ("Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.")
For some reason nobody ever mentions the possibility of one of Charlie's parents - neither of whom are ancient or infirm - accompanying him to the factory. Nope, it's Grandpa Joe spending years lying in bed with his wife & his grown child's inlaws... followed by Joe leaping up at the first bit of good news and announcing that he's going to the factory with Charlie (who can bring one person with him) as if Joe had been up & about the whole time.
@@sparklemotion101ni3 Actually in the book, Charlie's mom asks Mr. Bucket to go, but he says "I believe that the person who really deserves to go most of all is Grandpa Joe himself. He seems to know more about it than we do." (Grandpa Joe was the one telling Charlie stories about Willy Wonka.)
So, was polio the reason they layed in bed in the real movie? Did I just not put that together as a kid? Also, cinema sins would be proud.

Antonia Mar It’s because she’s pretty chill and her characters e.g. Bella on Twilight are supposed to be kind of calm and ditsy (not dumb) and distant and curious. So Bella was a character not bad acting.
