  • Drying grasses for fall!
Miscanthus grasses resemble thin bamboo once the leaves are stripped. They hold their plumes well when dried and a little hairspray can keep them neat. Don't let them end up in the compost pile. Dry the grasses and use them as fall decorations. Their plumes can change so harvest them when you like them best!

I was wondering how many you’d recommend in a bundle for the vases? As in like the tall vases down a wedding isle if you can picture what I’m saying, thank you in advance!

That’s a tough one as it depends on the vase openings and how full you’d want them. You will need to dry a couple bunches and then do a test run.

Nicole, using a bamboo pole to keep the stems straight is a great idea, thanks for that. I use a matt spray on the seed heads once they dry because hairspray is highly flammable. The spray that I'm using might also be flammable! You're right about the leaves and stems of miscanthus grass being razor-sharp. This spring, one of my grandsons (he's thirty years old) found that out when he cut mine back to the ground. I warned him ahead of time and handed him bungee cords to keep the stalks together, to cut down on the cleanup. He told me later that he never knew that his grandma was tougher than he was! Lol, and he couldn't believe that my ornamental grass could kick his butt.

hmm I believe almost all aerosol sprays are flammable until they dry so none of them should be used around an open flame. I don't really worry about it for a craft project since it isn't a problem when using it on my hair.
lol, yes, almost all of us learn the hard way about how sharp those grasses can be.

I really appreciate this video, never knew these grasses dried so fluffy, they're beautiful. I'll be planting a few of them in the back yard. So glad to see all I'll get for my money. Thanks, love your channel.

I saved some one year for my fall decor. The plumes eventually do break down and are quite messy even after I hair sprayed them. Now I spray them with clear coat spray and they hold up a bit better. I keep a closer eye on them now and throw them out when I notice anything falling off. Love the look.

Interesting Melinda, mine never break down once dried even without hairspray or clear coat. I have a bunch from three years ago that I just threw to the side yesterday and they don't flake at all. I wonder if you have a different type of grass than I do. Eventually, I do throw mine away as they get dusty and turn kind of a weird dark yellow as they do outside. I'm making witches broom out of them this year and spraying them with black paint.

Hi 👋 I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean by that. There’s an option on RUclips to slow video playback but the viewer does that.

Loved your demo. Is there a way to keep the plumes with the ropey "just cut" look? They are pretty when fluffy, but I like the ropey "just cut" look even better.

Thanks, I’ve never tried to keep them looking silky. They are so full and pretty when they plume. I wonder if placing them in glycerin immediately would stop the plume? I’m not really sure honestly.
