    The Kuntillet Ajrud inscriptions are a series of inscriptions found at Kuntillet Ajrud. Many are religious in nature, invoking Yahweh, El and Baal, and two include the phrases "Yahweh of Samaria and his Asherah" (or "Yahweh protect and his Asherah") and "Yahweh of Teman and his Asherah." The inscriptions were discovered during excavations in 1975-76, during the Israeli occupation of the Sinai Peninsula, but were not published in full until 2012. The inscriptions found refer not only to Yahweh but to ʾEl and Baʿal, and two include the phrases "Yahweh of Samaria and his Asherah" and "Yahweh of Teman and his Asherah." The references to Samaria (capital of the kingdom of Israel) and Teman (in Edom) suggest that Yahweh had a temple in Samaria, while raising questions about the relationship between Yahweh and Kaus, the national god of Edom.

    The goddess in Jeremiah is Ashtoreth/Astarte/Ishtar not Asherah. Read the Ba'al Cycle from Ugarit. It features the Semitic pantheon; it is thousands of years older than Israel. El is like a Semitic Chronos, distant and worshipped for so long that his name just meant "God". Ba'al Haddad and Yaw/Yam/Yah are members of El's council, the Elohim. There were other female deities like Anath, and Asherah, and Sin (from which we probably get Sinai). Ba'al Haddad is a Sky/Storm Deity sort of lilke Zeus-- his title is "The Rider on the Clouds"; Yaw is a water-fertility deity sort of like Poseidon who was associated with the Mediterranean Sea and rivers-- his title is "The River Judge", and he is probably related someway to Sumerian Ea. As in the Bible, in the Ba'al Cycle Ba'al (Haddad) and Yam/Yaw are in conflict. Out in the Arabian peninsula Yah had become a bull deity. When Canaanites from the North were forced out of the cities at the end of the Bronze Age is probably when their version of Yah was syncretized.

    It always struck me as bizarre how the Israelites could ever turn on Yahweh when he had so many miraculous powers? But Yahweh was just one of many competing God's , none of whom had obvious advantages over the others, until one cult re wrote history.

    • @blksmagma
      @blksmagma Год назад +12

      I thought that it was bizarre too, but it becomes much more understandable when I saw how many of Baal's epithets applied to Yahweh as well as some of the cultural practices that seem to bleed over. And then the whole "you will no longer call me "my Baal" made so much more sense than what my pastors kept spinning it as.

    I loved this video. ❤️ I've been a huge fan of Prof. Baden for years now. What I love about studying the ancient texts, is that there is so much background context that we have to figure out because the writer knew that the people of antiquity already understood. So many different ways to interpret what a text was saying and what it wasn't. I think it's important to help identify and preserve the other beliefs and opinions of that time because the people that believed and practiced them mattered and are as much a part of history and our ancient ancestry as the earliest Christians were.

    wow I just looked up Psalm 82 and there can be no confusion that yes indeed, the Hebrew god did pass judgment on the other gods. 1 God presides in the great assembly;
    he renders judgment among the “gods”:
    2 “How long will you[a] defend the unjust
    and show partiality to the wicked?[b]
    3 Defend the weak and the fatherless;
    uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
    4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
    5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.
    They walk about in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
    6 “I said, ‘You are “gods”;
    you are all sons of the Most High.’
    7 But you will die like mere mortals;
    you will fall like every other ruler.”
    8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
    for all the nations are your inheritance.
    So maybe just maybe, that whole line in the bible saying " I am jealous god" was meant for the Hebrews only and not other populations through out the middle east and the Hebrew "god" was afraid that other god's would get the glory. I wonder why no one especially preachers never mention Psalms 82?

      Psalm 82. This is a psalm of Asaph (the collector, or the Sun at the spring equinox, because here the year ended - was collected, or gathered up). At the spring equinox the winter zodiacal constellations are all overhead at sunrise. Hence, it is said: The Gods (Elohim) stand in the congregation of the mighty El, who judges in the place of the Gods (Elohim), i.e., the Elohim, or summer constellations, now occupy the place El, or the winter constellations, did at the beginning of winter, being separated by the equinoctial line alone. He (the El) judges in the place of the Gods (the Elohim). How long will ye (Gods) judge unjustly and accept the persons of the wicked? i.e., how long will yon summer constellations remain below the equator? - Selah; - stop now, leave the wicked; judge (see marginal reading) the poor and fatherless; deliver the poor and needy; and get them out of the hand of the wicked (winter). For they (the poor and needy, summer constellations) don't understand, but walk in darkness (are night constellations); all the foundations of the earth (the winter constellations) are out of their course, above the equator. I have said ye are Gods (Elohim), yea more; ye are the sons of the Most High (Eleon = uppermost, or highest Sun, i.e., the mid- summer Sun). But ye shall die like men, and fall (set) like one of the princes, or chiefs, of the zodiacal constellations (Libra then setting). Now, arise, O Gods (Elohim), and judge the earth, for ye shall inherit (claim) among all nations.
      Here, by supplying in parenthesis the names of the two kinds of Gods, the reader is enabled to see the true sense of the psalmist. At the same time, he is qualified to judge of the ignorance and rascality displayed in King James' translators. But they and the king had a purpose to subserve-to rule and rob the people by keeping them in ignorance.

      The two pillars, Jachin and Boaz, sustain the "royal arch" of the Freemasons. This corresponds to the seven summer months. The first, Jachin, is literally "he (Aries) will set upright;" the last, Boaz, according to Gesenius, means "alacrity" or swiftness. They answer to the east and west during the entire year; in spring and autumn, to the equinoxes, in summer and in winter, to the solstices.

      Well Paul was more or less a monotheist. Though that has no bearing on this conversation.
      I'm speaking about the Old Testament and its practices before the Persian influences if Zoroastrianism. Paul comes way after the exile and long after Josiah's reforms. The Israelite religion has changed.
      Paul says there's no other gods and nothing will happen if they eat food dedicated to other "so-called gods" because they don't exist, but in the book of Judges, Jephthah is saying that the Moabite god gave them their lands. Meaning that there's another active force besides YHWH.

      @@ramadadiver7810 Yeah, I read it. If he didn't deny the existence of other gods, he'd be a monolatrist. And I would totally agree with you...
      BUT
      The problem is verse 4 where he's basically saying that there aren't any. After that, he's pretty much hedging his bets as referenced by the use of the qualifiers "if" and "so-called".
      Old Testament is interesting where a good portion says that there's other gods, but not to worship them (monolatry), but there are others where YHWH himself says he's the only god there is (monotheism).

      According to the general consensus of scholarship, YHWH was originally a son of El.
      "I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 9 should be translated “inheritance.” Yahweh receives Israel as his “inheritance” (nachalah), just as the other sons of El received their nations as their inheritance (nachal, v. 8). With this verb, especially in the Hiphil, the object is always what is being given as an inheritance. Thus, Israel is given to Yahweh as his inheritance. ((Here I’m indebted to Dan McClellan.)) It would make no sense for Elyon to give himself an inheritance. Moreover, as I’ve argued elsewhere, it is not just the Gentile nations that are divided up according to the number of the sons of El. It is all of humankind, i.e., “the sons of Adam.” This clearly includes Israel. And the sons of Adam are not divided up according to the number of the sons of El, plus one (i.e., plus Elyon). They are divided up, according to the text, solely according to the number of the sons of El. *Thus, that Yahweh receives Israel as his inheritance makes Yahweh one of the sons of El mentioned in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting."*

      It's a good question that has an interesting answer. It turns out that almost all Pagan mythologies worldwide would automatically assign a single consort to every male deity at their conception. This is usually lost as the mythology developed, but thankfully we have archaeology to help by finding older versions of the same myths. However, the best extant and complete example of this that is still preserved in its entirety is the Japanese Kojiki. Practically every god in the Kojiki is born together with his sister-spouse, and even when the goddess is the more important figure (as with Amaterasu), a male brother-consort (Tsukuyomi) is allotted to her at her conception. It may be that this proto-monogamous tendency is built into the general human conception of religion itself.

And presently most so-called Christian religions prefer to worship Jesus as God. Not a good idea - Rev. 19:10. Yes, God has a wife - his heavenly organization of faithful angels. And Jesus has a wife- his faithful anointed disciples.

The thing about your understanding is that is based on completely ignoring the historical context and taking the Bible like if it was made in a vacuum. Oh, yeah, and Yahweh wasn't even the original god of the IsraELites. It was El before Yahweh, and YES those are separate entities, to the point of Yahweh being a bronze metallurgic deity of the Madianites (remember the tribe of Jethro, father in law of Moses? It's interesting how these professors still didn't figure it all out yet. ALL of the middle East "religions" have been born from their earlier astronomical myths. There is only one way that the astronomy fits together so there is only one true myth.
    Every so called mystery of these religions is explained by the authors desire to preserve their astronomy within foundational stories called myths. Much of the real astronomy has been lost due to constant need to update these myths in light of changing political situations as new empires and rulers emerged. In the middle ages for example, the myth of witches popped-up seemingly from no where but it was just that the elite scientists and astronomers were sharing their findings in code contained in books called books of the occult. That's why when people started using them politically to target certain sections of the population as witches and burning them (think Spanish inquisitions), everyone of their authors stood up and declared that their books were not true in that sense, there was no magic or necromancy etc. in them at all! It still doesn't stop people even today believing in witches and magic spells etc. though!

    This all dances around with the way things actually were presented as more like titles that proper names. Case in point as proofs with the masculine forms presented with their = feminine counterparts.
    El = Elah, Al = Alat, An = Anat, Assur = Assurah is the same as Asher and Asherah and after whom the Assyrians are named, just as there are the set of names as Ba'al/Bel = Ba'alat/Belah.
    Its a but more problematic when it comes to characters like Yahweh which more accurate was named Yahuah (yah-hoo-ah) s the deity of Judea. Beyond that there isn't too much clarity archeologically from sources outside of the perspectives of Judea what he was all associated with though he was presented as married at some point to two female matron deities of Jerusalem and Israel and a few vague references how eventually Yahuah divorced and destroyed them brutally for their infidelity.
    On the technical side, God is not even himself a Middle Eastern deity but specifically a European one, well known and wide spreed among many diverse tribes and dialectic expressions but in such a case was primarily called Godan. He was later conflated with the Greco-Latin Deus, later called Zeus in the 1500s CE, just as Deus was conflated with he Hebrew Yahuah and El/Al.
    However:
    Its also a fact people get all bent out of shape over is when they learn God as a noun is itself derived from the masculine noun Godan, which dictionaries still refuse to acknowledge and intentionally provide false etymology on purpose when you look up the noun God. However, when you look up the adjective god, the same exact word of the same exact language and same expect spelling it always comes up as meaning good. Yet as an noun its claimed to be basically meaningless or tied to things that clearly have no such connection to the damn word at all.
    None the less, lets also consider one of the oldest culturss still active, which is Hinduism that preserved a lot more thanis appreciated. The Hindu Deity Brahma that self manifests from his unknowable formless unconditioned state called Brahman shares much of the same traits of the first deity that is always male in all these related or associated sources as having three wives named Gayatri, Savitri and Saraswati and are said to have been made by him from out of himself who then help him and participate in the works of creation. A similar sense about the deity El as El Elyon with him having three wives was a belief maintained and current will into the 3rd to 4th centuries CE till it had been more or less stamped out.
    So yeah, :God" had a wife alright, but in reality he had 3 separate and distinct wives based on all those sources (not one, not two, not four, just three). Weird to to us now by imposed culture, yet not that odd based in actual history.

    Asherah, a goddess in ancient Semitic religion, was removed from Hebrew scripture due to the monotheistic reforms of the Israelites. According to the biblical account, Asherah was the name of a fertility goddess and the wooden cult object dedicated to her. The Israelites were commanded not to worship idols or any other false gods, and Asherah was seen as a symbol of paganism. So, basically Yaweh took them out to the woodshed.

Then I believe it’s Genesis and Exodus (I haven’t read the Bible in a long time) that one popular account only talks about 4 tribes, the other account talks about 12 tribes after the flood (one being Asher). Why is that?? I say that the reason for this is because some of the 12 tribes joined to make 1 and paying particular attention to protect Asher. Thoughts??
