I have XC90 D5 R Design from late 2008 and when I went to see my mechanic just to change oil he told me - you got yourself the last solid Volvo!! 🤩🥳 and the tank it is! Loving it every ride and no problems what so ever - now aiming also for XC70 as my wife took the XC90 literally for her so will need a new baby for me! Basically regarding Volvos has to be before 2010!!! 🎉
I bought an XC70 T6 engine (6 cylinder 3 litre petrol, a very rare engine in the UK). The car is a 2011, 50k miles (ex Japanese import). Very high specification and in perfect condition. Highly recommend these cars

I have an XC70 D5 SE LUX NAV, very happy with it, as for the heated windscreen I first had one in a 1985 Granada Scorpio. Fortunately my brother's prophecy "you won't be able to park it anywhere" was a bit of an exaggeration, though it usually does protrude a bit in supermarket carparks. Fuel economy is not great, mine is averaging 34mpg for normal use, the same as a I was getting with an under-powered 1.5 diesel Qashqai automatic with AWD. The Volvo is generally nicer to drive, and never feels underpowered. FWIW mine has the cream interior and dash, never in a million years would I have ordered a new car like that but I now prefer it to cars with boring black and chrome. It is a relaxing place to be.

Remapping givies us instead of 215 hp 280 hp, and torque is up to 530 Nm ! And, instead of using 12.3 l/100 km for the T6 our D5 are just about at 7 l/100 km on the exactly same route and identical driving profile.
Same. I have the "Classic" 2016 edition T5. It's great. Only issue is they decided to use a leather dashboard on the Classic edition, and the leather starts to bubble and lift out the air vents. Volvo replaced my dash already once, and now the same has happened to the 2nd dash. I'll be going back to Volvo to see if they can replace it yet again.
Top notch video. Top notch car. I'm a Volvo V70 P2 owner and I know exactly what you mean by being relaxed and chilled at the wheel. Also great to live in modern times when a car can stop itself from running over a dog. In about 1974 my dad was late home from work - he had run over a dog in the Morris Marina. The dog had a tag with the owners address - he scooped the dog up, took it to the owner - she was naturally upset. My dad got home. He was upset. I was upset. Everyone was upset. Still brings a tear to my eye.
These are a really nice car to drive. I found one new in a runout sale, D5 twin turbo with a stack of extras. So nice to drive with excellent fuel economy. No issues after 8 years and 76K kms. Better than my previous 05 xc70 which gave me a few issues but high kms on it when I bought it.
The prove that this car is amazing is that almost every comments here are from people that already have one. LIKE ME. It's a pitty that this d4 is not has reliable has the d5. To balance it, the 8 shifts auto gear box is incredible and much more reliable than the previous one.

I have a 2015 petrol 3.0T LHD with the Polestar tuning pack (330BHP) in the same exterior color in “Inscription “ beige interior trim, with many additional extras. It’s my second XC70 and I love it! The highway speed limit is 160kph here, and it will sit at this speed all day. I agree with most of your comments, and if you fancy reviewing my vehicle you’re welcome anytime.
Currently have a 2013 D5 Xc70, have to say it's the best car I ever had, dealer service every year and that's it. True workhorse and agree the style is pretty timeless (10yr old now) struggling to see me getting rid of it over 700 mile on full tank of Satan's love juice (no range anxiety here 😉😉)
I had 2010 XC70 D5 AWD Auto SE Lux, brilliant on a run and the most comfortable car I have ever driven! You can do 200 miles in one of these and don’t know you have done it! D5 is the best engine! My only negative is the body roll on the XC70 which you would expect being a raised AWD estate.
the D4 actually is 5 cylinder, just not the top one when it comes to performance. Anyway, XC70 is definitely an amazing machine (i have D5 of model year 2012 with 215 HP and 440 Nm of torque). Too bad, that the piece in video is not in hifghest level of equipment and it lacks many useful and also comfortable features. Such as ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, all the active safety features (blind spot, city safety, lane assistant), or the Volvo Four-C suspension system... it is anyway a great car. Overall, it is so so sad that there are no more cars like that one being made. The box-like shape of trunk is absolutely super practical compared to today's V90.
Another great review! I got rid of my 2014 (2015 MY) D5 XC70 SE Lux, a couple of months ago after 20 months of ownership. Sorry to correct you.. the d4 awd is a inline 5 cyl.. its just a detuned d5 power down to 180/190 bhp. When I upgraded it with polestar it boosts it up to 220bhp d5 territory. You feel the power more on the motorway drives. The engine configuration you’ll see when you check the VIN information about the car.

Yep. First thing I thought, there is no such thing as a VEA D4 AWD in the XC70 (and XC60 too I believe). FWD D4 were the new VEA 4 cylinder engine with 8 speed auto or 6 speed manual. AWD D4 were 5 cylinder 2.4 engine with 6 speed auto or manual. I believe this engine did not has sequential turbo charging like the D5. Hopefully the dealer didn’t mis-inform the guy? Confusing era for engine badging. Prior to introduction of VEA 4 cylinder engines, about 2010? There were 5 cylinder d3 and d4 2.0l units - 136bhp and 163bhp? The d5 was 205ps. There was a 2.4D with 185ps? Nice car though. I hanker for xc70, although got a V70 with 205 d5. Problem is I did really well for toys on the V70, I would need to find an xc70 with same level or above to replace. If trying to find a Euro 6 xc70 - need to find a lot of money (relatively).
I see the video is sponsored by Keith Price Volvo. Well unfortunately for them I've now had my P3 D5 XC70 for 12 years, and I see no reason why it won't last another 12. After all it has only got 140k on the clock (just run in really). And yes. The last of the best.
Just a quick one, I’ve been thinking about this for awhile to grow your channel. I bet if you done once a month viewers cars where you could meet up and have a look and bring their car Volvo 🎉 and you do a review on it
Great review. I let my xc70 d5 lux se go last December. It had all the bells and whistles and was, as you say, a car that could be driven all day and still feel relaxed. It was a 14 plate and tbh was starting to show its age even though I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to looking after my cars (I find cleaning my cars therapeutic). The trim was starting to come away from the body in places, some lights started to let in water, the alloys in places started to bubble and for someone who is precious about his car, this was a tad annoying. I also had a sneaking suspicion the auto gearbox was on the verge of giving me trouble. All disappointing as I genuinely loved the car. So, off to Volvo and traded it in for a new xc60 Inscription. I love the new car and in fusion red it gets a lot of looks, but, I suspect it’s never going to be the Volvo of old I.e. it ain’t a Swedish tank! We can only live off our memories of what was and move into the future (or maybe dragged into the future).
Love your videos drivelife, so informative I’ve been wondering what the plastic clip was for on the bottom of my v40 windscreen 🤔thanks to you I now know, keep them coming
We have a 65 plate xc70 with 179,000 on the clock. It drives just like the day we collected it with a few thousand on it, with very few faults over the years.
The D4 AWD and D5 AWD ar e both 5 cylinder. Its so on their AWD D4 and D5. Its only the software for horsepower that differs. The earlier XC70 D4 2wd D4 was a 2,0 5 cylinder. Then it changed it to a 4 cylinder VEA engine on the D4 2wd. But all AWD D4 and D5 are 5 cylinder 2.4 liter
I have been thinking of a Volvo lately , most notably the v70R but after seeing your well detailed video of this model I maybe sold on an xc70 Instead 😅, mind you I don’t do much MIlage so it’ll have have to be a T6 😊
I have a 2016 D5 SE XC70 (one of the last in the UK).The one thing that I dont understand is that I seem to have a different dashboard arrangement than this ,and also no electric seats (not that I am that bothered ) but it seems odd to have been offered despecced as it were.I had an old XC90 before and this is much better in all basic matters. Having been to Sweden a few times ,the Swedish police seemed to love them!
Hey tea, I’m not sure as it’s a very rare option here in the UK, taking a guess though I would say yes as the webasto is designed to preheat the car :)
Many thanks for this review! Couple of points: the rear legroom looks to be quite poor for such a large car. Also, the very handy under-floor storage space in the boot seems to be missing its gas strut support... or did Volvo dispense with that as part of the P3 facelift? Thanks! (Merc E-Class estate owner considering what to buy next! 🙂)
I think Ford were cutting corners. So yes, no strut, plastic load ties on the sides, no 12v rear socket, less sound proofing, and depending on the version, 2WD, Ford Mondeo suspension.
@@davidkmatthews It could be! I have a 2011 D5 SE and it has been, hands down, the best car I've ever owned. I take your point about the rear legroom, which isn't the best, but in all other respects it's a multi-talented car that is a joy to own. The D5 engine has been described by my mechanic (at a Volvo specialist) as the 8th wonder of the world and I would say that it's the one to have. Happy hunting!
Interesting to note that even on this super late and clean model the rear wiper is sagging off the glass, a common thing I've noticed with all these and never seen anyone mention
edit: You are right, it actually is sagging. Had a quick look and my XC70's wiper is actually way higher than shown here in perfect horizontal position.@@joelcarterramadge183
great point! Bcuz it has had issues, both the final gen xc70 Haldex from around '13 ,and the two prior gen's starting from '96. All of them fail, particularly the first two gen's which are considered a poor design, fragile design
Have you ever drive your car and put your foot down and the car stall just cut out I have V70 D5 estate 09 plate or does it have to warm up first? Or I am doing something wrong.
the D5 (bi-turbo) D5244T15 (158 kW) and the D5244T22 (162 kW) is the engine to go, esp. if you live in hilly or mountaineous regions.....the price diff btw "your" D4 and the D5 was not large. We have been driving XC70's since 2003, always D5's ....all in all 5 different cars, adding to 1 Mio km's in those 20 years... The D5 engine will make a big difference on highways in Germany, where we cruise around 150-170 km/h.......without dangers.....and the D3/D4 is then really working very hard and consumes rather 3 l/ Diesel more than the 8l/100km at that speed.
I got my first Volvo, a v60 just a couple of months ago. It feels like someone designed it especially for me. Sitting, driving, parking, everything is smooth. The only thing that bothers me in general for this model is the last pillars are too damn wide. You turn around and there's this huge blind spot.
This year I’m gonna look for a “new” car. I own a Subaru Outback 2008, a car which I really love and that after 320km with good maintenance, works and looks still pretty good! So I was thinking of a XC70 from 2015-2016 AWD, with the T6 engine! Is it a good car? Does it have anything I should deeply check? And what about this old style deals with letters and numbers in the central console?! Thanks!
@@18_rabbit if it is a real used car it depends on the life of the car and the previous owners. What I meant was if the car has parts that needs a special check because have always some issues. At the mean time I’m still driving my old Outback and I’m interested in the new model with the 2.4 Turbo engine as well.
This XC and the standard V70 was the last car that volvo made that was in tune with the wants of what volvo customers really wanted, thier decision to stop making estate cars alienated a whole bunch of loyal customers, Even these cars moved volvo's pricing up to near BMW and Mercedes costs. Which was totally unessercery given the requirements of experianced Volvo owners, In my time, I have had 3 240 series, 1 740 series, 1 760 series, and currently a V70, All of these bought new, At the moment My V70 is going well, but normally i would have changed it for a newer model maybe 4 years ago, But alas, Volvo have taken away my upgrade route. These are great cars, that will give you everything you need and give a comfortable and economical ride. My current D4 does 45mpg
yes! And the new ownership is frankly no longer acceptable given China's behavior internationally over the past decade. I won't be able to buy a Volvo any longer due to that, but more bcuz the engines are not durable longterm
My personal choice is between s80 and xc70. It is and always will be v70. It has the space it has the d5 (now remapped) 5 cylinder reliability. I have tried xc70 and it doesn't give me right driving sensation. It is to high and a lot of driving precisions has escaped to be honest when you compare it to v70. I don't know if the car you have tested has a 5 cylinder. I suspect it doesn't. A lot of Volvo spirit is still there, but a lot has escaped
@@jasper_north you have a right to have an opinion. But to be objective you should be able to test both sides of the argument. My v70 has a map that is far better than polestar (250bhp and 510N;m of torque). It's suspension is far better for driving sensation due to its lower centre of the mass, and I also have haldex (awd) system. On top of that my friend who is xc70 owner after getting a test drive in my car didn't comment at all. That was sufficient for me to know what his thoughts were. And regarding xc70 and it's offroad abilities... They are OK, but I've seen better. Xc70 is an attempt to compromise between a road and off road. And we know how that works. And please don't forget about one big thing. V70 is a history! When you close your eyes and imagine a Volvo, that's what you get. And estate car. Starting from Volvo 240 (pure classic), through 850 and ending on v70. This is history. Don't you forget about it! Xc is about 18 years old. It doesn't have any Volvo engine in its offer anymore! The Last 5 cylinder engine was installed in 2014. Please rethink your comments.
@@jasper_north polestar does not change the map individually to a car. That's why it is far worse than professional chip tuning taylored Suit is better than standard in the shop right? . If you still defend it, you don't know what you're talking about. I've tried both cars and drivewise v70 is far better.

yeah bcuz we poor cousins dn't get diesel, which was volvo's sad mistake not to import it or pass the tests to get it importable, ie the D5 would have been perfect for the US
The last great Volvo's were made between 2002 and 2008, After these years they started to make several engine parts from plastic and jampack the whole car with all kidns of modules, senors and other computer systems.
My V70 drives & sounds like a Rolls Royce , Cant hear the road either . - Beautiful Cars but mine a 64 plate without the heated seats , I can only guess the original owner didnt order that extra .
It's literally a smaller capacity 5-cylinder of 2-litres, producing the same power output per litre as the bigger 2.4 litre D5. the reduction in power is down to its reduced capacity rather than because it's a detuned 2.4 litre engine !
And way back my Granada Scorpio had a heated windscreen, it was manufactured in 1985. Ford did bring some great technology to Volvo although I appreciate that a lot of people are not happy about that. Very pleased with my D5 XC70 SE LUX, a very comfortable cruiser, and if you get bored you can tow a trailer with your racecar on it...
Sorry to say, but they do go wrong! And more often than you might be lead to believe! And when they do, you’d better have deep, DEEP pockets! For reference watch High Peaks Autos review.
Nice car the xc70 isn't?😊. I love mine. But you know that you're driving a 5cyl D4 awd with 181hp? If it's a awd it's a 5cyl just like my D5 awd. Hope you can convince the Goverment😂
Heated front screen filament tech - Scandinavian technology? Volvo gained that tech from Ford when they bought Volvo out. Volvo did not invent it sadly, though they did very well with lots of other safety features.
Been a Volvo employee for 43 years but never seen a review so close to orgasmic pleasure as this. Driven most of the range as company cars but ultimately any vehicle is a mean of transport, not something you marry or cuddle. All in all - this was not good!
disagree a bit about not marrying the car. It's late in the game of rugged long lasting cars that do road tripping. Volvo can be special, in the pre-china period/history
Yes it has a lot of Ford parts especially the under pinning's, rust is also more prevalent on the underside compared to the P2 examples, my 2005 P2 D5 was 18 years old when I sold it, and the underside was totally lacking in any kind of rust, whereas my newer Volvo C70 which also uses Ford under pinning's, has far more rust at 12 years old than my 18 years old P1 Volvo V70.

Last of the best… agree
I have a 6 year old Subaru Outback bought from Keith Price. It could last as long as your XC70.
I have a 2011 D5 one, love it 212bhp
Same here…Polestar
I wish my early V70 P3 would have built-in Bluetooth.
Just a quick one, I’ve been thinking about this for awhile to grow your channel. I bet if you done once a month viewers cars where you could meet up and have a look and bring their car Volvo 🎉 and you do a review on it
Gorgeous car! It looks a little like my V40 1.9lt . Got to love the hatchback! Definitely a stunner!😮
Nobody makes wagons like volvo does
Great review.
We can only live off our memories of what was and move into the future (or maybe dragged into the future).
year?
@@andrewdiproseread again...
many of us will only own old cars forever. I can't deal w/ the unreliablity and/or low longterm durability of most of the new cars now.
Great video! Just need a dedicated mic to get rid of the background and wind noise :)
Love your videos drivelife, so informative I’ve been wondering what the plastic clip was for on the bottom of my v40 windscreen 🤔thanks to you I now know, keep them coming
The plastic clip is to retain .your parking payment ticket to make it visible.
We have a 65 plate xc70 with 179,000 on the clock. It drives just like the day we collected it with a few thousand on it, with very few faults over the years.
How did you find such a mint model man? It looks brand new.
Beat yer!!
Just bought a 2008 XC70 D5 with 18,000miles from new.
Update to my previous post well i upgrade to a p3 xc70 d5 1 lady owner radar cruise bliss heated cooled seats its just incredible for what paid
which is how much?
Beautiful car. Sadly many US petrol versions have oil burning issues requiring piston/ ring replacement
indeed, yank here and they are quite bad engines in those later years, as are the 4cyl and the two 6's, all for oil, rings and other issues
What a superb car. I have a V90CC which whilst superb, I find it too big so am looking to trade down to an XC70.
It’s a 5 cylinder. Can’t you hear it when you accelerate?
The D4 AWD and D5 AWD ar e both 5 cylinder. Its so on their AWD D4 and D5. Its only the software for horsepower that differs. The earlier XC70 D4 2wd D4 was a 2,0 5 cylinder. Then it changed it to a 4 cylinder VEA engine on the D4 2wd. But all AWD D4 and D5 are 5 cylinder 2.4 liter
Noise is good! I love how my XC90 roars when I step on it!!! 😅
Awesome car, awesome review ❤
I have been thinking of a Volvo lately , most notably the v70R but after seeing your well detailed video of this model I maybe sold on an xc70 Instead 😅, mind you I don’t do much MIlage so it’ll have have to be a T6 😊
The only downside I have found in this model is the daylight running lights replace front fog lights. Thus not great in fog.
Foglights never helped in fog…it has always been a joke…
I counted 174 uses of the word 'lovely' 😅
I have a 2016 D5 SE XC70 (one of the last in the UK).The one thing that I dont understand is that I seem to have a different dashboard arrangement than this ,and also no electric seats (not that I am that bothered ) but it seems odd to have been offered despecced as it were.I had an old XC90 before and this is much better in all basic matters.
Having been to Sweden a few times ,the Swedish police seemed to love them!
Im owner of an honda hr-v 2018 but im really thinking to get this car, i have two kids and this car looks so damm well made
Could you please answer if its possible to turn on Webasto on this car without turning the engine on? thank you
Hey tea, I’m not sure as it’s a very rare option here in the UK, taking a guess though I would say yes as the webasto is designed to preheat the car :)
I thought heated windscreen was a Ford thing from back in the late 90s, not a Scandinavian thing.
Ford owned Volvo from 1999-2010 hence the heated screen !
@@georgedavies4385 Many thanks for that! Taking all of those points into account, maybe the best way to go is with a pre-facelift model...?
@@davidkmatthews It could be! I have a 2011 D5 SE and it has been, hands down, the best car I've ever owned. I take your point about the rear legroom, which isn't the best, but in all other respects it's a multi-talented car that is a joy to own. The D5 engine has been described by my mechanic (at a Volvo specialist) as the 8th wonder of the world and I would say that it's the one to have. Happy hunting!
@@georgedavies4385 i dn't like Ford but they have had the best handling of most makers!
yes this is really an objective review :)
Interesting to note that even on this super late and clean model the rear wiper is sagging off the glass, a common thing I've noticed with all these and never seen anyone mention
It is designed like this, no sagging there.
@@RA-yb1gx Then why are there forum pages of people trying to fix it?
edit: You are right, it actually is sagging. Had a quick look and my XC70's wiper is actually way higher than shown here in perfect horizontal position.@@joelcarterramadge183
The one thing never discussed on XC70 reviews, is the 4 wheel drive system, which is the whole point of the car.
Otherwise, great review.
.. .
He’d probably say it’s lovely
great point!
About a third way in to the video I noticed some excited breathing while filming the centre console situation :D
I have a 10 year old V70 D2 so the 1.6 engine with 140k on the clock can’t fault it so far but how long do you think it can still cover mileage wise?
the D5 (bi-turbo) D5244T15 (158 kW) and the D5244T22 (162 kW) is the engine to go, esp. if you live in hilly or mountaineous regions.....the price diff btw "your" D4 and the D5 was not large.
Immaculate car, I never used to notice Volvo's till recently. I will be getting a v60 estate from a similar era soon :)
I got my first Volvo, a v60 just a couple of months ago.
It feels like someone designed it especially for me. Sitting, driving, parking, everything is smooth.
The only thing that bothers me in general for this model is the last pillars are too damn wide. You turn around and there's this huge blind spot.
I am torn between buying this or the V60 CC 2015 MY
Yes I think would go for that too, but both are great cars !
"lovely" - i count 28 times! 🙂
Thanks!
it's a quite used Volvo so everything should be deeply checked , namely transmission(automatic) and engine.
Afaik all D4 awd is 5 cyl and all D4 fwd is 4 cyl.
"More than enough"? Ask a driver of the XC70 T6 Polestar.. 329bhp. I adore mine.
If I had one dollar every time he said lovely, I could buy this car. 😂
Great video
That's what they say about all Volvo stationcars that go out of production.
I was trying to count the number of lovelies, but lost the will to live.....
Lovely car....😆
As owner of a 2006 D5 I have a friend who takes great pride in the status and function of his cars . . . and he's jealous. Say no more!
Great cars
My personal choice is between s80 and xc70. It is and always will be v70. It has the space it has the d5 (now remapped) 5 cylinder reliability. I have tried xc70 and it doesn't give me right driving sensation. It is to high and a lot of driving precisions has escaped to be honest when you compare it to v70.
I don't know if the car you have tested has a 5 cylinder. I suspect it doesn't.
A lot of Volvo spirit is still there, but a lot has escaped
You just don’t have the money to drive a XC70 lol. Come on… get a XC70 dude
Totally disagree… V70 nice but we all know XC70 D5 AWD Polestar is king of the road!!
@@pavw5508 all about looks. XC70 wins… same mapping. Both will never be city cars. My friend
@@jasper_north polestar does not change the map individually to a car. That's why it is far worse than professional chip tuning taylored Suit is better than standard in the shop right? . If you still defend it, you don't know what you're talking about. I've tried both cars and drivewise v70 is far better.

Gosh, I want one now
Buy it!!! Or if not that one, an older xc70 , you won’t regret it 🤘
'an older'. Exactly which years are good? Many say it's very limited to around '05-'07. And even then the auto trans and the Awd system are fragile

40-50 miles per gallon i cant find that in the USA
That’s because in the US you could only get the 3.2 or the t6 with the 3.0 turbo in the p3. My t6 gets around 25mpg in mixed driving
@@matthalvey6394 imperial gallons? here in US gallons T6's usually do quite a ton worse than 25mpg!
yeah bcuz we poor cousins dn't get diesel, which was volvo's sad mistake not to import it or pass the tests to get it importable, ie the D5 would have been perfect for the US
The last great Volvo's were made between 2002 and 2008, After these years they started to make several engine parts from plastic and jampack the whole car with all kidns of modules, senors and other computer systems.
true-ish but the modules started in '01 and had exactly seven years of growing pains
My V70 drives & sounds like a Rolls Royce , Cant hear the road either . - Beautiful Cars but mine a 64 plate without the heated seats , I can only guess the original owner didnt order that extra .
every awd diesel has a 5 cylinder the d4 is just detuned d5
It's literally a smaller capacity 5-cylinder of 2-litres, producing the same power output per litre as the bigger 2.4 litre D5. the reduction in power is down to its reduced capacity rather than because it's a detuned 2.4 litre engine !
Triplex is British. St Helens to be exact. So not swedish ingenuity.
Its not the last great volvo as it has the crap 4 pot VEA engine that eat EGR's and have oil consumption problems🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
My 2007 xc70 has smallest rear leg room worse than a subcompact car
Volvo beats all German reliability but with poor interior design. Also front design is weak
"LAST GREAT VOLVO" Nope, that's the last RWD Volvo, the 940 of course
D5/2.4 or don't bother. The only engine to have!
Just buy a front wheel drive V70. The V70 AWD fuel consumption is very poor. If you want AWD, buy a Land Rover or a Subaru

Pritty car 🌤️🎄💕💕💕
4 cylinder volvo? It's a pass for me...
Last great Volvo was P2. Everyone know it. This is basically a Ford
@@stanionman8178 fyi, P1 is not a V70. V70 was P2 body
@@18_rabbit Yes my mistake, I am aware of that, so a little confused why I wrote P1 🤪have changed that detail 👍
