Hey guys, back with another Fallout 4 Theory video and today I wanted discuss some of the Lore behind the Sole Survivor's Son Shaun and talk about the possibility of Father Not actually being Shaun. So this is my Theory asking Is Father Really Your Son Shaun!

You know the moment I found out Father was Saun the first thought that popped into my head was "why the fuck have your synth's been trying to kill me? Why haven't you helped me?"

Also Nick has a limited memory bank like DIMA so "IF" it was 60yrs he would have no memory of Shaun and Kelog becuase Bethesda even shows in Far Harbor Kenji and Nick worked a case only a few years back. 2 yrs tops..... And he can't remember any of it sooooooooooo???????? Yeah shaun is dead or hiden from you and you kill him in nuklier family or when you nuke the insitute
He also refers to the previous head of the institute as “The Old Man”. He never finds a nickname for “Father”, even though he has known him since infancy, and is CONSIDERABLY older than “Father”.Why not “freezer boy” or “Popsicle”? There are also various ambiguous statements from Institute staff referring to “The child, Er I mean the SYNTH child”.

I think there's a 10 Year Old Synth Shaun and a real 10 Year Old Shaun.
When you access Kellog's Memories, he says something about 'The Old Man hates loose ends'.
That could easily be Father.
The Synth Shaun was there to trick you into believing that Father is Shaun while the Real Shaun was released when you try to blow up the Institute maybe as a gesture of 'Okay, you won. Here's your prize.".
The fuck? You see your son kidnapped in front of your own eyes. There's no way the old man was shaun.

No I figured out that he isn't. When you access Kellog's memories, in the memory inside the vault, when you press on a cryopod, he says " I don't know why we didn't refreeze all of them. I guess the old man did not want many loose ends. Thus suggesting that the Institute's director at the time, 60 years prior was an old male, like the father. Furthermore, in Kellog's next and final memory he even refers to the father as the old man. Finally inside the Institute, you can find a holotape named director's recording #108. There a female voice explains how irritated she was about the fact that a synth went in diamond city and killed many people due to a malfunction. That voice presents itself as the institute's director. However by reading Piper's "The synthetic truth" article that this event happened nearly 60 years ago, at the time Shaun is supposed to be abducted. Thus the Institute's director at that time was a woman, which comes in contrast with Kellog's memories. This would suggest that Shaun was abducted more recent, and that the Institute killed him or raised him, and now he is a scientist there unaware of his situation. Combining that with other plot holes that are created, that are mentioned in the video, and with the fact that your first encounter with the Institute seems staged, you can conclude that the father is just the director, who wanted to conduct an expirement.

Calling the director old man just like he does with father is a lore mistake from bethesda's part. If father isn't shaun then explain to me why he gets to look like his parents? At the beginning of the game you create your physical appearence and shaun ends up with some traits of it (color of the eyes, nose shape, etc). And before you mention it: no. He is not a synth. If you kill father you'll find no synth componente.
Shaun was kidnapped in 2227 and released his surviving parent in 2287 when he found out he was dying of cancer which is also the time he made Synth Shaun. That is a 60 year gap so Father is Shaun. The Female Director was more than likely Father's predecessor and Kellog's memories with Shaun are more than likely from a few months before you left the vault which is why Nick remembered it

Sharks With Lasers Apparently you have not planned the game. You find out the institute used advanced technology to give Kellog an enhanced lifespan which makes him not age.
Something interesting that proves the synth that thinks its Shaun is a synth, or just not human, is that with the power armor modification that highlights living targets, Shaun doesn't get highlighted like literally every other NPC in the game
Uhh did you not know that synths are living organisms too? They're just manufactured instead of grown from a single cell.
Actually similar things can be done with hypnotism. It is fully possible that the synth components enforce commands like that in the brain.
that might just be a glitch because gen-3 sysnths are completely indistinguishable from any regular plain ass human, if it was that easy to spot a synth, people wouldn'T be that afraid fo them.
the only way to know wether or not someone is a synth is to kill them and see if they have any weird technology inside and even then there is still the very real possibillity that the institute is perfectly capable of making synths without synth components, but just chooses not to, in most cases.
My problem with the Father/Shaun situation is when you access Kellogg's memories. The last memory, when Kellogg and Shaun are sitting in Diamond City, there is a radio playing. On it, you can hear Travis talking about Piper. That was when Shaun was supposedly 10 years old. According to father, another 50 years have passed since that memory but yet Piper and Travis haven't aged a bit?
In that cut-scene, Kellogg refers to the leader of the institute as the "old man". If the "old man" is Father, how could Father (Shaun) be sitting right next to Kellogg? Also, when Shaun and X6 are about to relay, Shaun asks "Are you going to take me to my father?" This tells me that Shaun has never met "Father" and that Kellogg has been in possession of Shaun for 10 years. We know the institute needed pristine DNA but why would they have waited 10 years to relay the boy? I think Shaun was taken to the institute and his DNA extracted as a baby, and then dumped on Kellogg for the next 10 years. Why would the "old man" do this? I don't know but neither does Kellogg, who admits that in this cut-scene. Perhaps Brian Virgil's escape and Kellogg's reassignment by the "old man" was a timely coincidence. "Old man" did let player out of Cryo remotely, but did not expect him to survive. Knowing that the player would be coming for his son, "old man" reassigned Kellogg to Brian Virgil knowing that he would ultimately cross paths with the player. This would provide the "old man" a first line of defense against the player, or it would provide a timely demise for Kellogg of which the "old man" admits was becoming a bit to unpredictable and dangerous.
About Brian Virgil... Now if the game is to be believed, Kellogg got those assignments when the Shaun was ten and still has not completed them after 50 years??? Kellogg is a synth and almost certainly knows it. Going into the glowing sea would be no issue for him so why wait 50 years?
I think that the events of F4 happen right after Kellogg's memory, and real Shaun is either killed or held prisoner by the Institute after he is teleport-ed from Kellogg. Father is actually the "old man" Kellogg refers to. Father is not kin to the player, and that is perhaps why Madison Li had so much issue with the project. Madison, and perhaps others, know the kid is not the "old man's" and struggle with the ethical dilemma of not only ripping a family apart, but also harvesting an innocent child.
Maybe the "old man" wanted a son? Maybe everyone calls the "old man" father because he lead the institute scientists to greatness? Maybe the "old man" is faking being your son to keep from getting his ass kicked after Papa bear player figured out a way to jury rig his happy ass into the institute.

Rhett Faulk uh, I know this is like a year late, but that memory of 10 year old Shaun in Diamond City is the Synth version of Shaun. So that memory wasn’t 50 years ago. It was very recent to the Sole Survivors release from vault 111.
So that’s means that none of those people had to wait/age 50 years...
Also, it would be impossible for that memory to exist if it was the real Shaun because the DNA from him was used to create the Courser that teleported him back to the Institute.

I don't understand why they would give the synth child to Kellogg, it makes no sense. Kellogg himself knows that that is not actually Shaun, he extracted the real Shaun 50 years ago.
It's not because he wanted a child family, since he himself said that he knows its temporal and there is no point getting invested because he would get taken away.

I think the majority of these points have to do with messy writing on Bethesda's part tbh. It's fun to explore the space and try to put together what actually happened, but I don't exactly think they were playing 5d chess.
I wouldn't at all be surprised if them adding in the whole "is the player a synth?" thing in Far Harbor was a result of them seeing fan theories about it and realizing it would fill in several plot holes
Shaun´s actions towards you might be explained with the idea that you are not human. You might just be Shaun´s experiment. His attempt to give his family a second chance. Most likely you are redefined courser. After all you are unlocking new skills and getting stronger as time goes on. Way more than what would be humanly possible. Letting you to "escape" the vault was an experiment on how strong your "love" would be. And how would a synth behave if left with his/hers own devices.
All i get confused about is how Kellogg doesn't seem to have aged much, yet Father seems as though he is 80
I always thought this as well! If Father is 60 and when Kellogg enters Vault 111 to steal baby Shaun, he looks maybe 30-40, why isn't he super old or dead by the time we get out of the vault? The only thing that I can think of is that when you kill Kellogg, he had a bunch of synth parts on him that helped him teleport and some of his limbs were synth parts as well.... maybe he also had technology that did not allow him to age?

I am unsure whether Father is the Sole Survivor’s son. There has always been a conscience in my head suspecting that he is not related to the Sole Survivor. First off, no matter how you change the look of the Sole Survivor, Shaun always looks the same. Which as we know in reality this would not make sense. My second reason is that whilst inside Kellogg’s memory if you activate one of the people inside the Vault 111 memory, you hear Kellogg say something about an ‘Old Man’. So maybe, he was referring to Father as the old man. Sure, they could of used the Sole Survivor’s son to create synths, but how do we know that Father is definitely Shaun? My last reason why Father may not be the Sole Survivor’s son is because he only saw him as an experiment. If he truly was the Sole Survivor’s son, surely he would care about him just a little more than an experiment.
There is a huge plot hole revealed if Father is Shaun. While father may have been the "father" of the generation 3 synths, Kellog was tasked to kidnap baby Shaun by Father himself. In other words, generation 3 synths existed before Shaun was ever kidnapped. There is at least one generation 3 synth in Fallout 3, Harkness, so Father had to have been "defrosted" before this for him to be the "father" of the gen 3 synths, but the implication in the game is that Kellog kidnapped Shaun in 2277, the same year that the events of Fallout 3 took place. This creates a paradox. If a gen 3 synth existed before 2277, then father had to have been the donor before 2277. That either pushes the date of Shaun's kidnapping back, which is impossible, because it conflicts with Kellog's known history (he wasn't on the East Coast early enough,) or makes Father a liar.
Because of this, I've always assumed that Father is not Shawn, and that baby Shaun was killed during the process to create the Shaun synth, which, while a Gen 3 synth, wasn't an improvement on the model in the least. This also helps explain why the Institute would ever decide to employ a person that was the subject of an experiment to the point of putting him in charge. Father had to have been an adult when he donated his DNA to the project, and has been in charge of the project all along.
Of course, all of what I said might be wrong, because Bethesda hires hack writers that either don't understand the lore, or don't care about the lore in the least. The biggest plot hole is "Why do they use caps as currency on the East Coast, when caps only became adopted as currency because the water merchants of The Hub used them as markers for certain volumes of water." The Hub never traded water past the Rocky Mountains, much less on the other side of the Mississippi River or Eastern Seaboard. Don't even get me started on the existence of Super Mutants further east than Oregon.
far as the gen 3 is concerned how do we know there were not multiple branches of the institute working on the same project so the gen 3 in fallout 3 could have been the first attempt at a different branch while the fallout 4 branch decided they needed the dna of a prewar person.
@@solarlightshield7916 There is only one Commonwealth _Institute_ of Technology, so there is only one institute. And the CIT representative in Fallout 3, _explicitly_ says he is from the Commonwealth, and is seeking a synth built there.

I mean, that’s basically hypnosis. And depending on the mind, it can be triggered to perform certain actions, so that can’t be debunked out of hand alone.

Don't think father is Shaun cause Kellogg tells about the old man in his memory's, so basically father ( who is assumed to be Shaun) tells Kellogg to get baby Shaun, when I figured this out I spawned in an arena and watched as father helplessly died by a deathclaw I put in the arena with him

I always thought that father wasn't Shaun because the ages don't match up. How the fuck does father look so much older then Kellogg when by the time Kellogg kidnaps him as an infant Kellogg is prolly in his late 30s - mid 30s. And when you fight Kellogg he should then be in his 90s because its 60 years after he kidnaps Shaun, yet he is most certainly not in his 90s when you kill him. While he was cyberneticly augmented to enhance him and likely his lifespan was increased as well, he doesn't look a day over 50 which I just don't believe that the institute could create that kind of technology if they can't cure Shaun's cancer, as both are based in genetics and DNA. just never added up to me so I always assumed father was either a clone or just the leader of the institute pretending to be Shaun.
There was one thing you said that is addressed in the game. You said that it was confusing that they kidnapped people. And that you assumed that they were killed. Well, the reason why and where they go is the same. They make the kidnapped victims into supermutants using FEVs
tolkien didn't write the story of this universe. the answer is more simple than what you're saying. the truth is, the writing was bad and there were holes in the story. i would imagine they had to scrap content that maybe would have gone in depth on some of these subjects a little more. it all really boils down to bad writing tho.
Larry Evans True but he was trying to give a canonical answer but realistically it's you who got it right Bethesda fallout games have HUGE plot holes (Vegas , 1&2 had pretty solid plots for the most part the other two I have no clue )

Evidence for “Father” being a synth: All the synths in the game don’t take damage from the bleed out syringe from the syringer rifle, and father takes no damage from it. Child Shaun can’t be shot (because he’s a child) so there’s no way to confirm it

There is a hole in your plot about Kellogg. After killing him if your intelligence is 6 or more when you loot him your character will say something like. " he was barely even human"
Which I think might show Kellogg being a synth. Or some type of Android synth hybrid. Also if Father is the actual son would Kellogg know how much time has passed? From vault 111 kidnapping to your character defrosting? Sixty years is still sixty years. But I think you have a very interesting theory. I think you're closer to the actual plot than I've heard from other game theory vids and blogs.

The thing I find interesting, is that Kellogg didn't seem to age. You see him when he picks up baby Shaun, then 50 years later... and he looks the same. That being said I thought right from the start, that you most certainly not search a baby.
But yeah, who is telling you, that you got unfrozen 150 years after the bomb, then thawed when Shawn was taken, refrozen for 50 more years... if you would have been frozen for another 150 years... how would you be able to know? People would need to still count time, which they possibly don't.
Alas, Fallout 4 doesn't make any sense if you look at the world. It looks like, the bombs dropped 5 or 10 years ago, with buildings still standing mostly, and not allot rust going on. Without any work, after 50 years buildings will break down, wooden ones especially, but also steel will degrade.
When you’re in Kellogg’s house to find out the teleporting method the guy on diamond city radio must be older than Kellogg
There's no explanation for Kellogg. He kidnapped baby Shaun supposedly sixty years ago, but he didn't age sixty years when you confront him in the game. And he wasn't a synth, merely a cyborg.

i discovered that in the quest, dangerous minds where you go through Kellogg's memories, Dr. Amari says "this memory seems to be fairly recent" and the only conflicting factor in that is that "Shaun" does not appear to be even remotely close to the age we see him as in the memory. Very overlooked, may be important
I think the institute isn't just one thing, I bet it's an extension of the enclave.

The institute is an extension of like European survivors. Who were technologically advanced and weren't affected by the bombs I believe.
Another mystery that I noticed that might show that Father is not the True Shaun: When you are in Kellogs memories and he has shaun, if you listen to the radio in the background you hear Diamond City Radio talking about Piper. Now shaun is still a kid, SO either Kellog had synth kid shaun, or Father is NOT the real shaun, as piper would be over 100 years old.
As much as everyone likes to talk. Basically it comes down to whether you believe the father’s word that he’s Shaun, or the entire rest of the game’s evidence saying he’s not?
To me, everything else in the game tells me this isn’t Shaun.
-Synths attacking the survivor
-Kellog’s memories
-Valentine’s statements about Kellog and the kid
-The Father’s refusal to prove that he’s Shaun (DNA test would be simple, and the institute should have that tech)
-His lack of emotion of his parent’s death (which I guess could be attributed to his lack of knowing them, but he even claims it wasn’t a murder when it clearly was)
-He also lies to you when you 1st meet him by saying he’s unarmed, but if you kill him, he’ll have a pistol in his inventory, so how much more did he lie during that conversation?

The real Shaun likely died imo. Either in the institute or in the Commonwealth looking for his parents after escaping. What you see with the father is merely a clone, which is why he changed based on your character. The 10 year old Shaun you know is a synth, so why would it be so hard to assume the Father isn’t also a synth?
(If the father really is Shaun and he really has cancer) My theory is he was rushing to make Shaun for the actual sole wonderer for later purposes. I think he was rushing to make Shaun perfected so the sole wanderer would have his son back. (I haven’t finished the game yet)
Shaun is really the head of the Minute men. Which is why he made you do so many labor task, to make up for back child support.
The plot twist isn't that father isn't Shaun; it's that you, the sole survivor, are a synth.
The evidence is in the terminals of the institute, and touched on again in the Far Harbor DLC.
Bethseda is just lazy and can't tell a good story. It's pretty straightforward.

My thoughts:
The synth (10 year old "Shawn) is not a social experiment or a good will towards the player. My thought is that it was and is a failsafe for the director "Shawn" to be immortal. The thing that get me thinking of this is a line that Kellog says when you run around in his memory. When you click on the pod that you are frozen in. dont remember the full line but it is about what the old man is wanting. Yes he could talk about a diffrent director of the institute but that is not very likely its more likely that he talks about director Shawn or father if you will. The most likely thing is that your real son is dead. Used and thrown away by the institute. Or that he didnt survive what ever test they would have done. Because they would have been forced to do them on an newborn child since they could not wait with the risk of corrupting the dna with the wasteland radiation.
child shaun was rushed because father is dying and he knows it, thats why he gave the order to unfreeze you, shaun wanted closure, this is evidenced by the terminal by the cryo pods saying something like manual override engaged when you check the status of your own pod

The 'little older' comment by Kellogg is probably sarcasm. I think it conforms that father is Shaun
Kellogg woulda known how long its been since he took Shaun. If he's calling him "kid", then Shaun would still be a kid. Kellogg would know it's either been 60 years or 10 years since he kidnapped him. Or Kellogg calls him "kid" cuz Kellogg is decades older than Shaun. So even as a 60 year old man, Shaun is still a kid compared to Kellogg.
I just got done playing it and yeah the whole Kellog thing didn’t make sense to me. Because we are meant to believe the memory we see in Diamond City with Kellog and “Shaun” is the robot child. BUT in that same memory sequence Kellog speaks fondly of “Shaun” making statements about how he will miss him as if he’s a real kid with a fleshed out personality. And if we are to assume that is robot Shaun then why did Kellog show such sentiment toward him? Because he would know better than anyone that the 10 year old Shaun was a robot because he is the one that hand delivered real Shaun to the Institute 60 years ago. So he’d automatically know it was a robot.
And I suppose you could argue that they anticipated that the Lone Survivor would kill Kellog and retrieve his memories (because what we believe is real Shaun (Father) says something along the lines of he let it happen as justice for him and The Lone Survivor) so they set up a fake scene specifically for The Lone Survivor. But then that begs the question. Why? Why not just let him find out that 60 years had passed already? Why set up the fake 10 year old scenario? Why wait until toward the end of the game to reveal himself? Especially if he wanted his father to join him in the Institute. Why wait so long to make contact with him? Why make him hunt down the Institute? Shouldn’t it have been vice versa? Why let the Lone Survivor make friends on the surface and work against the Institute in the first place?
It’s just strange to me. It definitely feels like there was supposed to be something else to the whole story that they took out.
ive always wondered if the child was planned to be a new host for father shawn before you arrived. As hes human, he could be transfered to the child shawns body.
i just realized something, he's saying kellogg had the real shaun in diamond city, but the story is that there weren't any coursers or gen 3s until after shaun was in the institute for a while, so could he have been running around with synth shaun for whatever reason? or am i messing that up? or is bethesda messing it up and it wasn't on purpose?

in my latest play through, i ask Father to proof that he is Shaun and he says there is nothing he can do to proof it... so this line pretty much says that Father isnt Shaun as a simple DNA test would be enough proof and he is refuse to even do something as simple as that in a facility that work with genetic engineering...

If Father was to be Shaun. Then explain how Kellogg has not aged at all from when he picked up the baby. As we know from his memory he had a family so he can't be a synth??!

He didnt help him before they meet because like he said, it was an experiment of sorts, he is a scientific so he was curious. If the synths didnt attack the sole survivor, we would have know something was up
As much as father cares about the sole survivor, I think he cares about the institute more. Giving the reins over to someone completely untested would surely doom the faction. He gives you helpful nudges and breadcrumbs along the way, but to earn the position you have to survive the harshness of the wasteland. Think of it as a deeply disturbing, bladerunner-esque Willy Wonka situation.
Due to what “Father” put sole survivor through and the kinds of things The Institute is willing to do I always kind of assumed that sole survivor is a synth. Part of a confidential project by very few people, headed by Father. What sole survivor is put through rather than Father safely getting them from vault 111 to me it makes more sense that they’re an institute project. Perhaps Father did manage to extract his real father but he was hostile and met a fatal end. Heartbroken at losing his dad Shaun made him into a synth and bc of the sick F he clearly is wanted to test the synth version limits out in the current world. Utterly gross.
If you take a baby from his parents and raise them in another family that family will be what they will bond to. So even if he finds out that the SS is the real parent there wouldn't be the bond that will allow him to care if he lives or dies.
Well, I have another piece of proof that Father is not Shaun, Kellogg in the Vault is 30-40 years old, but shouldn't he be 90-100 years old in Fort Hagen?

GhostFS Cool idea, maybe it is even part of a broader Vault Tec experiment. Vault Tec was insidious and given their ability to execute amoral illegal projects so easily it is safe to assume the scope of their designs wasn't confined to closed door experiments. Certainly there were broader scopes and greater goals involved. The entire Institute itself could have been a phase two development and execution part of the plan. Maybe it falling is part of the plan as well. It is equally plausible that Vault Tec was just a small part of an unknown organization with a broad scope. The world of Fallout is a perfect playground for experimentation on all levels. Damn, Bethesda lacks creativity for not exploring some of these angles better.

I was confused due to the dialog in Kellogg's memories, if you click on the pods in his memory, he talks about "the old man" keeping you frozen instead of killing you, then in the next memory, he said that sitting in diamond city as bait was the "old man's" idea, meaning these old men are probably the same person and the fact that Kellogg did not age, even a little, proves that he is not Shaun and Father is just playing you. I think you were right, Shaun died during the harvesting of his DNA.
This is among the reasons I have been suspicious of 'Father' from the off. Details seemed iffy.

Father was a fake, covering up the botched experiment to sway the sole survivor to join their side, to make their cause his own. They noticed how nothing could get in his way, when he was searching for Shaun. So they had to come up with a plan, before it was to late and he had destroyed everything they've built. Father was dying and he knew what had to be done. Father explained to the sole survivor that he was his son and on Father's deathbed, told the sole survivor that he would have to take his place and squash any faction that would get in his way. So the Institute got what they wanted. An unstoppable force and now you have what you desired, your baby boy....... Strong.

That’s a really damn interesting point of you. In my opinion you can’t really get to a perfect conclusion without any flaws, because every therory has a few points that make no sense when you look at every little detail. In another video for example, it is said, that the life support system in Vault 111 failed completely which would mean that your character dies as well. But you can’t make a synth of a corpse, can you? The gorillas manufactured by the institute are probably synths as well, so I doubt that it is possible for the institute to clone you and make a synth of your clone or anything. But yeah, I will check out Oxhorns video and search for your comment. But even RUclipsrs tend to forget little details in their theories so you should always be critical and consider all your experiences from your own gameplay. Oh and thanks for your long ass answer :)
I always thought Father Shaun made synth child Shaun as a way for you to gain all the time you lost back. give you the chance to be the parent you never got to be. that's why he was in a hurry, he wanted child synth Shaun to be ready before he died of cancer, and make sure that he would emotionally react properly to having you as a parent.
He created him so that you could get a second chance at raising him. It doesn't sound too far fetched considering the world they live in.
Adding on to this, it's also possible that he was in a hurry because he wanted child synth Shaun to be ready by the time you got there. That way, the SS gets their son back, leaves the institute, and never has a real reason to return and threaten their existence. But then synth Shaun doesn't react the way Father intended, and then he has to reveal (or lie) that he's your son to stop you from staying a threat.
@@ShadeDergon97 Since it's revealed that Father actually was the one, who released Nate or Nora (depending on who you play as) from their cryopod, your reason for the project to hurry seems legit. I mean Father (or Shaun, if it's really him) could hold the SS in that cryopod for much longer, just in time for the Synth Shaun to be ready and operational. I guess his time was short tho due to advanced cancer development, but still he could postpone the release procedure for a couple days, if he wanted, couldn't he? He tells you on top of the Institute roof (or the old MIT roof), that he was curious about you, if you'd be able to make it out of the vault and stuff. His interest is implying, that he really might be your son and not just a random mad scientist. Well at least he's your mad scientist son lol.

UR dumb. They took his DNA from his cells, not reproductive stuff, which wouldn't have been developed as a baby anyway. We all share like 99% of our DNA with each other, they just needed a sample that hadn't been hit by radiation. None of the synths look like shaun, and they are of various races, which indicates they add a variable into the Synth DNA for random appearances that Shaun wouldn't have.

I think they just needed an example of basic human DNA structure that had no degradation from radiation, and then extrapolated considerable changes from there to create various classes of synth. They would have had access to data from individuals from a variety of ethnic backgrounds for sure, because... look at the population of the Institute. You can build whatever structure you want on top of a cement foundation, but unless you have a recipe for "proper" stable cement (aka the pristine human genome) you might be setting yourself up for failure.

I think that Father made up the whole story of him being Shaun because he was scared of the sole survivor. He also knew the sole survivor was going destroy the institute…unless he was made the head and joined them. And I think that the child synth project was about turning an already human (child Shaun) into a weird synth hybrid. Just my theory after playing for the first time.

"The Old Man" is consistently used as a reference to Father.
Kellogg's memories tell us that "The Old Man" gave the order to kidnap Sean and turn off the life support for all the other vault residents.
this means that Father can't be Sean as Sean was still a baby, and frozen in a vault, when the Old Man gave the orders for Kellogg to abduct Sean and to kill all your nieghbours, leaving you as the "backup".

I think father is Shaun but years being at the institute has indoctrinated him into thinking in such a cold calculating manner. This is to me why he doesn't help the sole survivor in the least in the beginning and middle of the game because he see's his own father/mother as a variable in an experiment than his actual father/mother because he doesn't feel any attachment to his parents. Furthermore the "experiment" if you will was also his own little test to see if he was worthy to lead the institute after his passing. But of course all we can do is specualate.

The Institute has the most powerful tech that can actually SAVE the world. The tech that they have covers all fields- military, medicine, food, water, energy. By destroying these tech, you are removing the one thing that can save the Commonwealth. You are also give the leadership of the Institute, allowing you to change whatever you want. It's not shitty writing.
Because the Insitute is the most scientifically advanced faction in the world, and you are its leader now since Shaun has passed away and mostly just interested in advancing science. They are as morally gray as the Brotherhood of Steel.

I guess the old man didn’t want many loose ends.” You probably think that the Institute was run by an old man before Shaun. But Kellog refers to father as “the old man”. Also, in the Institute we find the holotape “director’s recording #108” here a female voice says that she’s not happy that a Synth malfunctioned and killed diamond city residents (the broken mask incident). This female voice says she’s the director of the Institute. In Pipers “the synthetic truth” we learn the broken mask incident was 60 year ago. That same year Shaun was taken from the Vault and in the memory of taking Shaun Kellog refers to the director as “the old man”. Weird stuff right
People are way overthinking that "old man" stuff. The narration you hear during the memories is Kellogg giving you, the player, exposition. It's not his thoughts in that time. He's "reflecting" if you will. So the "old man" line is him referring to Shaun.

I doubt this because in the Minutemen quest where the Institute attacks the Castle, your fellow minutemen are able to kill coursers. I think that it is for game mechanics and everyone's disbelief is just to pat you on the back for taking out those two bosses.
I think that coursers are just over estimated by the people of the commonwealth. This is possibly proven evident because of my before mentioned battle at the castle.
