Brett Michael's father is the veteran in the video...and Brett did lose his best friend..the song is very personal to him. The emotions you see in the video and hear in the song are very real.
Yes sir and I tell you I absolutely love Bret Michaels I feel like he didn't get the honors of what an amazing voice that this young man has and he's about my age I'm 56 I got to see them open for Kiss and they were absolutely amazing
@USAFcombatvet He passed away in 2007 from cancer, they think it was from being exposed to agent orange. He was and always will be my hero! Thank YOU for your service, God Bless You!
Brett Michaels wrote this song while staying at his parents over Christmas. He found out that his bodyguard and close friend Kimo (who is in the Every Rose Has Its Thorn video) had passed away. He wrote this song. Verse one is about the televangelist Jimmy Baker in the 80's, the second verse is about his uncle. For the part about Kimo, he didn't know that they were going to show pictures of Kimo. You might have noticed that he had to stop lip synching because he was tearing up. The lyrics are all factual. Brett Michaels and Poison are more than just a party band. There lyrics to many songs are about life's experiences. Check out songs like Life Loves A Tragedy, Let It Play, Cry Tough, Theatre of the Soul and Stand. Many people also don't know the humanitarian work done by these guys too.
They just ended talking about great guitar work in rock ballads. Every Rose has some of my absolute favorite solos. I don't care where anyone rates him among all-time guitarists, C.C. has always been my favorite.
I am 60 years old and was just a kid when Nam happened, but I had so many members of my family serve in wars. From WWII to Vietnam. Here is the thing about Poison- they knew how to party but they were the only band that put out SINGLES every album that had a serious message - no other hard rock 80s bands would risk their careers by doing that- "I won't forget you" written about loss through drugs and overdose, "Fallen Angel" tackled Hollywood prostitution (casting couch) and rape way before Weinstein, "Something to Believe In" tackles Vietnam, Suicide, homelessness and Protestant Ministers theft, "Life Goes on" tackles murder in the industry, while "Stand" was a song spiritual awakening- Sorry, Poison outperformed, outplayed, out wrote, outperformed and out charted most 80s bands for a reason. My dad was a Naval Aviator for 27 years, with 3 tours in Viet Nam (2 as an attack pilot). I remember him coming home from one tour, landing in San Francisco. I went with my mother to pick him up at the airport. As we were walking in the airport (my dad in his dress white officer uniform), protesters were spitting on him and yelling "baby killer" and other things at him. My dad walked with his head high, with his arms around me and my mom. He didn't say a word, just kept walking. I was never prouder than at that moment. RIP dad, my hero.
C. C. Deville is one the most underrated guitar players out there. He doesn't get enough credit and people rarely mention him when talking about great guitarists. He was so damn good.
I know that a lot of people liked to make fun of Poison, but they have stood the test of time and still put on an amazing show. They were my very first concert, back in my freshman year of high school. It remains a favorite memory for me. They have always been my favorite band. 💜 And I’m with Jay- Unskinny Bop is the best! 🥰🤘🏼
They were my first concert too just before 7th grade for me. I saw them again this summer and got to meet them and they were some of the nicest, most grateful to their fans band I have ever met. They are still my go to band no matter what the haters might say.
@@dccraig03 that’s awesome! I would’ve love to see them in this recent tour, but I’ve got some health issues that make going to concerts hard for me. I heard they were great and I’ve always heard about how kind they are. I know Bret does a lot for veterans too.
@@dccraig03 that's pretty cool. I was also a big fan in the 80s and saw them in concert a handful of times. Always a good time! Funny that you say they are still so grateful to their fans - I swear I remember seeing a picture of them in some rock magazine back when they were JUST starting to get a buzz around them and some good radio airplay. One of them had written across it, "We pledge allegiance to our fans, for which this band will always stand." It seems they lived up to that. Very nice.
I concur! Poison is a much better band than most will give credit for. CC had some of the best riffs, and his solos are wild. Fallen angel is my favorite.
CC's solo's are generally epic "sounding" though...have no idea if he's a good guitar player, or not...doesn't really matter in regards to his skill level to someone that just wants to hear sonically pleasing material.
This song is special for Brett Michael since he wrote this after one of his best freind took his own life. One of my favorite with every rose has it's thorne
This has been one of my favorite songs since I was a child! The best. Glad you're doing it! Bret Michaels' dad was a veteran. Honoring our vets is massively important to him.
I do not honor vets.. I think all who are in thr military are brainwashed terrorists. I was raised better than that.. I also raised my kids to know that the military is a hoax..
this was a HUGE hit back in 90-91, one of Poison's best ballads, for sure. Now, YOU MUST check out "Life goes on". that's an order! Oh, and BTW, C.C Deville is CRIMINALLY underrated.
This is my absolute favorite Poison song, I feel like it never got the attention it deserved on the charts. Btw Bret Michaels is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Saw him outside a show in a small bar in Nashville on his solo Freedom of Sound Tour. He was so nice to chat with my then husband and I before the show, then invited all 100+ people out to his bus after the show to sign autographs.
Great song! And Jordan CC Deville is the guitarist, and he can play! That solo went with this song so well, it had so much meaning and it was so heartfelt, the whole song was brilliant and so personal to Bret. Every Rose has it's Thorn is also BEAUTIFUL. Those are 2 of their slower song's. But they have SO many more. Trust me! Keep playing them! Billy Joel and Kenny Loggins! U won't be disappointed!
My favorite Poison song (although it's hard to pick a clear favorite). I think this is my favorite GUITAR SOLO. It's just above the solo for "I Remember You" by Skid Row. Amazing stuff! I miss the hair bands.
I'm 54, so Poison is from my generation. Ever since the 80's heavy metal has been one of my 2 favorite music genres. Hair metal got me into metal, and I have moved onto more extreme versions like goth, black, and death. Us headbangers tend to put down the hair bands. Thank you for reminding me where it all started. It was groups like Poison that made hair metal rule the 80's. I caught them on the Ratt Poison tour where they were opening for Ratt. Ratt was the big name at the time but part way into their act, the audience started chanting for Poison to come back out. HAve you listened to their "Ride the Wind." Everyime the Army moved me, this was the song I'd start the trip with.
I am glad that you finally reacted to this song. Poison was more than just having a good time, they were deep. Respect to Vets all over the world, they paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we can all enjoy the freedoms we got today. They have my respect always.
I can't tell you all how much this song helped me through the passing of my grandparents. There's nothing like turning it on, singing along to it, and letting you tears pour out with the lyrics. When my grandma passed away this past summer (RIP Lynn DeGrow!
My dad did 3 tours(4 yrs) in Viet Nam, was wounded in combat(Purple heart)and chose to stay with his guys. I've never talked w him about it but I grew up with living through what he had to deal with. My mom had so much to put up with as well. I want to send him this song but I don't want to strike up his past. He's a proud Marine. I served(USAF)but never did what my dad did. Thankful for the way he brought me up!
My dad was in 'Nam as a Marine. He was one of 3 that survived when his unit was overrun. He never talked about it to me until I returned from Desert Storm as a Marine. Then he told me everything, and we cried together. I took him to the Vietnam Memorial in DC. He said, "Thank you. I would never have gone without you." He lived the majority of his life in constant pain from battle injuries, but that never stopped him from being a great man.
The part about his best friend is real. The director of the video put clips of him on the tv, without Brett knowing, in order to invoke a true reaction from him. Love this song. The line "It just makes me wonder, why so many lose and so few win..." gets me every time.
"Every bad boy has a mellow side" was a rock ballads cd collection on a TV commercial lol CC Deville is a very underrated guitarist imo. His solo(5:25)in this song is ♨️
This song lives rent free in my head ....Thank you for both of your reactions for Something To Believe In . This is very much appreciated. God Bless you and your families
I cried the first time I saw this video. Obviously because of the story, but also because of Bret crying in the video when he's singing the line when he lost his friend on Christmas Eve 😢😭 I still cry sometimes to this song But I also think that everyone can relate to this song in their own way, because everyone needs something to believe in. 🎸 Have a great day to everyone who reads this comment. Never forget you are loved, appreciated and you are not alone with everything you're going through. Keep believing in your dreams and most importantly in yourself 😊💕
My Dad and all three brothers were in the military during that time -- 3 did tours in Vietnam. Thankfully they all came back in one piece, and Jay's right, none of them would ever talk about it. I just laid my oldest brother to rest last year from lung cancer that he contracted from Agent Orange exposure. Thanks for a beautiful song reaction. 💙✌
If you get the chance to see Poison live, DO NOT MISS IT!!! They absolutely rocked the stadium in Denver this summer. Honoring vets during their show with a local veteran honored before they did this song. So much respect for them after seeing them live. CC is the real deal, that dude can play with the best!!! And Bret's voice has aged extremely well. Still powerful, solid range and in control after all these years.
The song always makes me cry my eyes out. It wasn't Christmas Eve when I got the news and it wasn't Christmas Eve when it happened rather it was 4th of July weekend couple years ago but one of my best friends took his own life (he had served in the Navy and when he came home he was messed up in the head and got hooked on drugs real bad. I mean real bad drugs.) and every time I hear this song now it hits that much harder. Thank you ❤️ thank you for being amazing people and giving a lot of us about 10 minutes or so at a time a chance to just forget the world for a minute and listen to some great music together. Peace
I found this in an article that gives a breakdown of the song: The song is about two people in Bret Michael’s life. The first is his personal friend and bodyguard, James Kimo Maano or Kimo. Kimo got hooked up in the rock & roll lifestyle and with his abuse of drugs and alcohol, his life tragically ended early. When Bret found out, he was inspired to write this song as a tribute to his friend. When you watch the video of this song, you see an emotional Bret Michaels reacting to pictures that showed up on the TV of his friend. The Director of the video didn’t tell him the pictures were being used and it took Bret by surprise. It was a cruel trick, but it captured a real moment. The other person is Bret’s cousin Bob who had been wounded in Vietnam and the song talks about his struggles mentally with what happened as well as the loss of so many of his cousin’s friends in the way. It paints a stark reality of the damage war can have on a person. The whole song discusses reasons for Bret’s loss of faith whether it is from false prophets, the homeless, the impact of war or the loss of a close friend. The song paints such a graphic picture that you can’t help but be touched by it in some way. And depends on your mood when you listen, it could even bring a tear to your eyes.
Everything you ever wanted to know about this song: The whole road crew was like a family by the time they finished touring for the second album "Open Up and Say... Ahh". Kimo, Poison's bodyguard, like all the other members of the crew had gotten heavy into drugs, alcohol, and women. Over the months that their third album, "Flesh & Blood" was being recorded, Kimo's health got consistantly worse. One day in late December of 1990, he died all alone in his Palm Springs hotel room. When Bret got the call on Christmas Eve, he went into hysterics. He locked himself in his room and didn't come out until this song was finished. It tells not only the life story of Kimo, but of Bret's cousin Bob who was wounded in Vietnam. The video for the song is equally as powerful. When Bret saw the image of Kimo on the screen, he lost his compsure and had to leave the set for several hours before coming back to finish his part. The video got 1st place in MTV's "World Series of Video" Peoples Choice Awards.
This is probably Poison's most important, and heartfelt songs. It's definitely the one with the best message to it. It really makes you ponder the unfairness and hypocrisy of life. How there has to be a better way/answer.
This song will always resonate with me as a daughter of a Vietnam vet, my dad wasn’t the same wen he came home and the flashbacks got too much and dangerous that he left us. We grew up without our dad. He passed away 12 years ago and I am so proud of him and will always hold him in high regard along w all the other vets
My uncle is a Vietnam vet, and he never talked about either. Except for one time, while on vacation, when he was drunk. It's funny how many of them are exactly the same in the fact they refuse to talk about it. The shit they went through, and how they were treated, was truly unbelievable.
This song gets me every time, especially the part about his best friend Kimo. Kimo became his best friend and confidante during their first major tour and it broke Bret up when he died. The emotion in this song is so raw. You can even hear it in C.C.’s solo.
This song came out when I was moving into a whole new territory of life. Kid to young adult. My best friends dad had just passed away from cancer and my parents would be divorced in a few months. It was pretty traumatic for my tender brain and soul. Life changed big time. And I have a memory of my brothers and my family friends sitting around watching this video on MTV after their dads funeral. Moments you just don't forget.
My Grandpa was a WWII Veteran. My father's a Vietnam Veteran. Songs about veterans always make me emotional. We are so blessed that we have men and women who give all they have and more to keep us free. God bless you for reacting to this song, and God bless America.
What a beautiful reaction! I love Poison. Bret himself recovered from a massive stroke - and still gets up and continues to rock on and be a positive roll model for all :) Awesome! made my day!!
This is my favorite Poison song. The story about "his friend" is a true story. One of my fav lines in a song. "Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now Things I didn't know then"
"Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now the things I didn't know then" -- one of my most favorite line of all time. Enjoyed watching your reaction to this awesome, timeless song.
This song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 charts on October 6, 1990 and it peaked at number 4 and this was there 9th hit single out of the 13 chart singles.
C.C. Deville is a great guitarist and very under appreciated he could make the guitar hit emotional notes. Poison had many great songs from one extreme to the other.
In the song when Brett sings about the vet and his best friend dying, Brett had a security guard who had served in Vietnam who was a personal friend to Brett, and when he killed himself, Brett wrote this as a tribute to him
I appreciate you and your genuine thoughts. I have loved Poison since the first time I watched “I Want Action” way back in ‘83-‘84. Being a kid from the U.P of Michigan and moving to a bigger city in Lower Michigan, I saw them in MTV for the first time. Always my favorite and always under appreciated. So thank you for enjoying the band and what they do.
This is one of my favorite 80’s rock ballad’s, so beautiful!!❤❤ The way he plays the guitar and his voice, so wonderful!😢😢👏👏 Poison is definitely one of my favorite rock bands from the 80’s! Great reaction guys!❤
I Ama 100% VA ratd Disabled veteran of these here United States I am rated 100% for PTSD because of my Military Service, I love this Track and I love this Channel!
I love this song, it takes you straight to church in the most beautiful way. Now Jay, are unskinny bop was your favorite tune of Poisons.. then you should give Look But You Can't Touch a listen. Love you guys. 😎❤️👊
If you're wanting to get to a harder Poison song, you have to try the title track from their very first album, the song they still use to open every concert, "Look What the Cat Dragged In." I've seen them in concert eight time dating back to 1991, and this was their opening song every single time. It was never released as a single, but God only knows why. It's the heaviest song I can remember from them, and my all time favorite. Or you might want to go with my second favorite song of theirs, "Fallen Angel." Others have mentioned "Every Rose has it's Thorn." It is definitely a pure power ballad and their only song to go all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
God I love Poison so much one of my all time favorites! So underrated. People need to look past the makeup and the image and pay attention to their music. They wrote the best ballads. Something To Believe In is one of the most powerful songs ever. They don't make em like this anymore and it's sad. I love you guys!!!!
CC brought so much out of that Gretch that was never meant to be there... Gretch has always been a rhythm guitar but DAMMMMM... That man turned it into a lead in nothing flat..
Great song! My dad was a Vietnam Vet and was a highly decorated soldier. He didn’t talk much about the war but I remember he told me they were booed when he came back and yes he wasn’t given a welcome back. Bret’s dad was a Vet too.
We met them a long time ago in 1989 along with rick dees. i called the radio station to request a song and was told i was their winner? you get to meet a new group called Poison and get a coupon book worth $1,000. i was like um ok. can i request my song now? lol. everyone came into our house except CC deVille. he stayed outside in a chrysler lebaron limo. (cheaply made car) it was very interesting meeting them. you can't really judge a group by 1 song either. check out there other songs. nothing but a good time is a good one.
So happy you chose this one!I'm what you would call a "super fan". Been listening to Poison from day one when I was 8 years old...yes 8 lol. What was my momma thinking letting me hear some of their stuff? haha..but I digress. This is my favorite from them. Heart squeezing feels every time I hear it. Highly recommend seeing them live! The are just awesome guys. 100% real and love their fans...and what a show they put on! Check out "Look what the cat dragged in" as your next banger..it's an early one and so SO good!
Such a great song....lyrically powerful. Breaks my heart and touches my soul at the same time. C.C. Deville's guitar playing is seriously underrated. There are so many great Poison songs that y'all haven't done yet....look forward to watching more Poison reactions.
Brett Michael's father is the veteran in the video...and Brett did lose his best friend..the song is very personal to him. The emotions you see in the video and hear in the song are very real.

"sometimes i wish i didnt know now the things i didnt know then" one of my favorite lines in all of music
It is a great line although Bob Seger said it first in "Against the Wind".
C. C. Deville is one the most underrated guitar players out there. He doesn't get enough credit and people rarely mention him when talking about great guitarists. He was so damn good.
I agree but guitar snobs hate him
I know that a lot of people liked to make fun of Poison, but they have stood the test of time and still put on an amazing show. They were my very first concert, back in my freshman year of high school. It remains a favorite memory for me. They have always been my favorite band. 💜
And I’m with Jay- Unskinny Bop is the best!

C.C DeVille killed the guitar work on this one....criminally underrated axe man.
Not really bro, he fits the band ok and that's about it
CC's solo's are generally epic "sounding" though...have no idea if he's a good guitar player, or not...doesn't really matter in regards to his skill level to someone that just wants to hear sonically pleasing material.
I didn't see this comment I wrote almost the same thing above.
He was not bad. He was probably better when he was (rarely)sober.
I have heard this song a thousand times, seen it played live and it gets me every time. It leaves me in tears.
And that ladies and gentlemen is why the 80s was the greatest decade for music ever!
This song is special for Brett Michael since he wrote this after one of his best freind took his own life.

Their best song, hands down.

Something To Believe In , my favorite Poison song of all, followed "Look what the Cat Dragged In" (stark difference lol you will rock to it for sure)
My favorite Poison song (although it's hard to pick a clear favorite). I think this is my favorite GUITAR SOLO. It's just above the solo for "I Remember You" by Skid Row. Amazing stuff! I miss the hair bands.
'If the cowards that decide the wars had to fight them, there would be no wars'
This video is so emotional. He did not know they were putting his best friend/bodyguard in the video. So you see his emotions come out. Great song 💕
I am glad that you finally reacted to this song. Poison was more than just having a good time, they were deep. Respect to Vets all over the world, they paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we can all enjoy the freedoms we got today. They have my respect always.
He made that guitar scream in agony and pain that is this song. It is one of those rare songs that you can’t hear without getting teary eyed.
I can't tell you all how much this song helped me through the passing of my grandparents. There's nothing like turning it on, singing along to it, and letting you tears pour out with the lyrics. When my grandma passed away this past summer (RIP Lynn DeGrow!

We buried my grandmother today. She lived to be 97 years old. This song helped me release some emotions. Thank you. 🙏
Here's another vote for "Every Rose Has It's Thorn". It's a slower one but you both will absolutely love it!!
"Every bad boy has a mellow side" was a rock ballads cd collection on a TV commercial lol CC Deville is a very underrated guitarist imo. His solo(5:25)in this song is ♨️

Obviously because of the story, but also because of Bret crying in the video when he's singing the line when he lost his friend on Christmas Eve 😢😭
I still cry sometimes to this song
But I also think that everyone can relate to this song in their own way, because everyone needs something to believe in. 🎸
Have a great day to everyone who reads this comment.
Never forget you are loved, appreciated and you are not alone with everything you're going through.
Keep believing in your dreams and most importantly in yourself 😊💕
Poison were are a badass band, Absolute quality.
Peace

Yes makes me cry as well
I found this in an article that gives a breakdown of the song:
The song is about two people in Bret Michael’s life.
Everything you ever wanted to know about this song:
The whole road crew was like a family by the time they finished touring for the second album "Open Up and Say...
80s power ballad brett on piano and cc on guitar. What a beautiful arrangement.Bless our vets! 🇺🇲👍👍
He passed away 12 years ago and I am so proud of him and will always hold him in high regard along w all the other vets
every rose has its thorn and their cover of your momma dont dance r both great
My uncle is a Vietnam vet, and he never talked about either.
You can even hear it in C.C.’s solo.
yup, CC's solo sounds like crying, sobbing, and wailing at the end. the solo fit emotionally perfect with the song.
So much emotion, this song hits the feelings. So glad you did this!
Sometimes you’re surprised and sometimes it is more than that. This is more than that! Love this song.
As a veteran, I really appreciated your thoughts on the matter, thank you. God bless America and y’all as well.
This was played every hour on Mtv for I don't know how long...
But I still got goosebumps as soon as the piano started.
This is my favorite song by Poison. I just love this.❤❤❤

I was a senior in high school when this song came out, and hearing it takes me right back there.
My dad was a Vietnam Vet. Anytime I see a veteran at a restaurant or deli, I will pay their bill as they have earned it.
What a beautiful reaction! I love Poison. Bret himself recovered from a massive stroke - and still gets up and continues to rock on and be a positive roll model for all :) Awesome! made my day!!
This is a beautiful song❤
Every Rose Has Its Thorn for your next one. It was their biggest hit!
this song always gets me , it is a very well written song and it is true

thanks to you both , you two are the best
This is my favorite Poison song. The story about "his friend" is a true story. One of my fav lines in a song. "Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now Things I didn't know then"
"Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now the things I didn't know then" -- one of my most favorite line of all time. Enjoyed watching your reaction to this awesome, timeless song.
Every Rose Has its Thorn, it's time guys, it's their best ballad
This song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 charts on October 6, 1990 and it peaked at number 4 and this was there 9th hit single out of the 13 chart singles.
A lot of these hair/glam metal bands should be in the R&R Hall of Fame they did have a big part in the whole decade of the 80s.
Heck yeah, love this song, glad you got around to it 👍🇺🇸⚜️🔥🔥🔥

Poison also does a KILLER version of Your Mamma Don't Dance. It's a total banger!
This is one of my favorite 80’s rock ballad’s, so beautiful!!❤❤ The way he plays the guitar and his voice, so wonderful!😢😢👏👏 Poison is definitely one of my favorite rock bands from the 80’s! Great reaction guys!❤

Great song.
Every rose has its thorn for Amber
Nothing but a good time for Jay
CC brought so much out of that Gretch that was never meant to be there... Gretch has always been a rhythm guitar but DAMMMMM... That man turned it into a lead in nothing flat..
Great song! My dad was a Vietnam Vet and was a highly decorated soldier. He didn’t talk much about the war but I remember he told me they were booed when he came back and yes he wasn’t given a welcome back. Bret’s dad was a Vet too.
There are really good songs, there are great songs, and then there are perfect songs 🙌
It is always amazing to me when rockers sing ballads. They have the perfect voice for it. One of my favs is Kiss singing Beth.
CC is the most underrated guitarist ever....ABSOLUTE superstar and a pure joy to watch play
You can feel Brett singing from his heart and spirit.
The rest of the band were on point.
C.C the guitarist is amazing.
'Every Rose has its Thorn' and 'Fallen Angel' are must listens.
Your next Poison song needs to be Every Rose Has It’s Thorn
