Anonymous it matters. of it's art, I love it. of it's a picture of a person dressed as the character, I don't.

I think the faces of real people is more cringe than the cartoon or illustrated characters of the story, just because it doesn't quite match the aesthetic of the book cover

    • @RunwrightReads
      @RunwrightReads 8 лет назад

Cool. I just read The Rosie Project last week and I got it from the library. It was a yellow cover with just writing on the front. I filmed a video review of it so you can see me holding it. I am about to read The Rosie Effect and it's the blue hardcover with just a silhouette of a couple on a bike with a stork following them. Such a cute cover!
I tend to like minimalist covers too

I'm from the Netherlands and a couple of years ago I started reading almost everything in English. Mainly because it's a lot cheaper (translators have to be paid too :P) but also because of the absolute horror that happens when they change the covers. Honestly, I don't know who designs these things in the Netherlands but most of the time they completely ruin the book by changing the cover. Why not just keep the original?

    • @dumpling6079

A Thousand Nights is my favourite book cover ever. The pink part on the cover is actually the naked book, and it's a full gold illustration of the Girl and Lo-Melkhiin (front and back), and the purple dust jacket has the cut out which shows their faces. It's beautiful.

Such a fun video! I mostly agreed with you, but not with Vicious. I definitely like the dramatic UK vicious better. I'm also shamelessly going to steal this idea for my blog ;)

I've actually got the film cover for the book thief. Its what attracted me to it when I picked it up in my supermarket. I don't normally prefer film covers on books but I much prefer it on the book thief.

Hey! Actually, the smoke on the cover of looking for Alaska is not from a cigarette, but from a candle. The original idea had the candle on the cover but then they cut it.
Loved the video! I subscribed yesterday and I’ve been watching your vids non stop since then ♥️

I'm from Brazil and I really like the cover of "The book thief" we have here ("a menina que roubava livros"), although here unfortunately we don't have many editions in hardcover. Sometimes I think, idk, the US covers have too much information and distoant colors. Anyway... I really like your Channel, and also liked this video, sorry for any grammatical errors and greetings from Brazil! :)

I think I accidentally forgot to finish Morgan Matson's Second Chance Summer, but from the beginning it seemed to be a book dealing with pretty heavy themes (with some hope on the horizon) so the UK cover seems much too upbeat to me!

the UK edition of a thousand nights is so much more beautiful than the picture makes out, the pink and gold bit is a cut out and the hardcover is all pink with the gold figures that you can see. the pages and the spine also have an incredible design on them. i have no interest in reading it but its on of those books that are so beautiful that i would possible buy it...

Hundred percent agree with you about The Selection. It annoys me so much and I hate looking at the UK cover on my shelves. I think the Ready Player One US cover was international though, cause that's the one we got here too. Also I've never seen that cover of Paper Towns, the one we have is yellow and has a cartoon van on it. It matches the style of Looking For Alaska. We've had so many redesigns of John Green's covers though, originally they were all horrible. So horrible that I've since repurchased most of his books with the newer covers. And I agree with you about UK covers always having faces or people on them. It sucks so much cause I personally hate having a giant face on book covers, and the US editions are always so much lovelier.

I agree with all your preferences, especially with The Selection. I always found the pink looked so odd, like it was a printing error, or something. Nine times out of ten, I usually prefer the US covers of books. I like that I can find both options at my Chapters sometimes for certain series, like Throne of Glass. And speaking of that series, I definitely prefer the US covers. :D

Slated/Shattered/Fractured series by Teri Terry, to me the UK cover is more effective and the US seems a bit busy, but also having met the author and talked about the girl on the cover it just seems to fit the UK cover more

The thing that I dislike the most about UK covers is that we always get paperbacks when in the states they get pretty hardcovers, especially for YA. A few YA books I have in hardcover but most are in PB, which is sad :(. I like the Queen Of The Tearling more in the UK edition (which is hardcover funnily enough). Also An Ember In The Ashes, which is in hardcover as well - the actual hardcover book is gold, which I love. But in general I prefer the US covers just because they're hardcovers. The Throne Of Glass US covers are really pretty for example :). We just have white paperbacks in the UK. Do Canada have any special editions of YA books?

    My choices:
    City of bones: US
    Landline: US
    attachments: UK
Eleanor and park: US (I live in the UK and the cover is the same?!)
    Looking for Alaska: UK
    Paper towns: UK
the queen of the tearling: US
    the bronze horseman: US
    Amy&roger's epic detour: US
    Second chance summer: UK
    The graveyard book: UK
    Leviathan: US
a darker shade of magic: UK
    Vicious: US
    Ready player one: UK
    A thousand nights: US
An ember in the ashes: UK
    night owls: UK
    The selection series: US
    The book thief: UK

I prefer the US cover of Paper Towns. I suppose for me the thumb tack on the map is just more symbolic and I prefer the minimalist style in the case of Paper Towns. Understand your choice though. That being said. I totally agree with your choices for The Graveyard Book, Ready Player One, An Ember in the Ashes, Night Owls, and The Book Thief. For mostly the same reasons as well.
