The part about breathing made me think of what Renée Elise Goldsberry said in an interview with the LA Times. I think it's great advice both for performing and life in general "The trick for any fast rap is marking when to breathe, and then as you’re doing it, just reminding yourself, “I have to stop and breathe here, and then I’m good. This is how long I have to go before I breathe again, so if I don’t stop here and breathe, I will not make it.” Because sometimes you don’t breathe just because of what happened before; sometimes you need a breath to make it as you continue, sometimes you breathe for how far you have to go, how far ahead there still is. I think that’s also the bigger life lesson: recognize when you need to stop and breathe."
I love how you discussed all the technical aspects to performing as you went through this performance. As an aspiring actor, all the advice and lessons you touched on really helped!
Saw Newsies years ago in NY & wasn’t sure what to expect since these were discounted tickets...first row. Lots of sweat & spit. Anyway was pleasantly surprised with Kara’s vocals and the incredible high energy choreography. Kara reminded me of the classic Gilbert & Sullivan patter songs where crisp diction is critical without the big notes at the end. Again, I thank you for today’s lesson.
Ohh I am jelous! The movie and the musical recording are my comfort movies when I feel down and I would have loved to see it live. Sadly I was too young when it was played and also dont live in America. Plus I dont think we have a version of it in my country. But I still dream. Maybe it comes back someday and I can see it :)
I just finished watching the Disney + version and wow...she's such a powerhouse! This is such a challenging song; at least she has a stage to walk around and use her typewriter. This looks like a small dinner theater so it's an even smaller location...talk about acting through song; I was hoping you'd review this one! I was honestly more blown away by the sheer amount of choreography by the ensemble; it was like Jerome Robbins (RIP) had mentored this production! Talk about breath control while singing and dancing...some of the most amazing choreography I've seen in years!
I go to a VERY talented musical Theatre place (I’m 14 btw) mid July they are putting a two week summer camp. I’m auditioning for Katherine and I want to put in the work and blow off their socks. I’ve been there since 1st grade and I want to show them that I’m ready for big roles. So thank you so much! This really helped me and wish me luck! I’ll keep y’all updated. Will someone like this so I can find it again? Thx!
I don't think inauthentic moments matter to me that much. Actors are human and I think the ability to know you've messed up and and to keep going makes you a great actor. I also believe it's a waste of time to chase perfection because it doesn't exist.
I think for me they’re a lot more excusable and acceptable in a concert setting, where there actor can try different things and be a little more playful
@@mattallen4154 Yeah in a play it would be a little weird when they brake character. Cause you couls see her smile at the little mistake and in that situation I dont think her character would smile like this. So maybe it would throw you off. But when you are on stage like this and not in an actual show, its great for you to try our what works and what doesnt.
hi! i’d love to see a reaction to sam pauly’s performance of “All You Wanna Do” from Six the Musical. her vocals are great, but for me her acting through this song is incredible (i view it as the emotional climax of the musical as a whole, and sam is amazing as katherine howard)
I really love your reactions. They are my favorite because you don't just talk about the vocals, but also on the acting. I feel like a lot of vocals coaches that react to theatre performances, they focus on on the vocals but not how the acting can affect the vocals. I also love how you talk about the music affecting things, from the vocals to the acting, as well. I am probably going to end up watching every video you put out, because I love all the information you give. I have so many performances I want to ask you to react to, but I'll just ask for one. Can you please react to Still Hurting from The Last 5 Years musical, but do the Anna Kendrick version? I know he performance is not a true Broadway one, but I am interesting in seeing what a theatre coach has to say about her performance.
I would really like to see something from Leslie Odom Jr. Dear Theodosia and Wait For It come to mind initially. I know Hamilton does really well on the channel.
You're next review could be the nuisances between Helpless with Phillipa Soo and Satisfied with Reneé Elise Goldsberry. It's insane how intricately connected the lyrics and choreography are between them. Also I just stumbled upon this channel and I have to say I enjoy the content a lot. Keep up the amazing work :)
I just saw a video of Alan Mencken talking about writing this song and how it is basically a brainstorm out loud and the whole time it was intentional for the thoughts are all over the place
Thank You Marc Daniel!!! I really appreciate you doing this song! I’ve performed this song before in front of an audience and absolutely love it, I really enjoy the challenge this song gave me. Thanks for answering my request for this song! Just found your channel a couple weeks ago and I’m really loving it!

I absolutely love Newsies, can't wait for more video's on this show. Also, could you make a reaction and analysis to "legally blonde" by Laura Bell Bundy and Christian Borle. I almost always cry during that song and I'm curious to find out what you think about it. Really love your channel and video's, keep up the great work!
Newsies was my first favorite musical, after I saw the recorded version on Netflix (it's now on Disney+). It's still one of the greatest musicals and performances of all time for me, only matched in my book by Hamilton and the 25th Anniversary edition of The Phantom of the Opera.
I don’t know if you’ll read this, considering how old the video is. But I just discovered your channel starting with your react to King George from Hamilton (I listen to the King’s songs before bedtime now, lol) and then this. I want to thank you for starting this type of channel. I have watched plenty of Vocal Coach React videos from different channels, and they just don’t explain it thoroughly as well as you do. Probably because you have more insight on musical theater. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Oh, and may I suggest something a little unorthodox? They do stage productions, but upload them onto RUclips as well. If you could react to something of Team StarKid, that would be awesome. My personal favorites are Firebringer and Oregon Trail. The Man Who Doesn’t Like Musicals is a pretty good one too. (Fair warning: that third one is a bit topical, but super... well, I don’t know how to put it into words. Haha. You’ll see for yourself.)
I absolutely love the depth of your reactions and explanations, thank you so much! I'd love to see you react to 'In a Crowd of Thousands' by Derek Klena and Christy Altomare from Anastasia the Musical! :)
On the subject of acting through song I would love to see a react to some of the songs from She Loves Me such as Vanilla Ice Cream. It's such a great show and the 2016 revival with Zachari Levi, Laura Benanti and Jane Krakowski (among other fabulous performers) got me completely obsessed with it. Sondheim is always a great call too so maybe On the Steps of the Palace from Into the Woods. I'm singing that for an upcoming exam and it's been great to dig into acting the lyrics and Cinderella's emotions during it.
You mentioned Jeremy Jordan in this video. I would be interested to what you have to say about his performance of "Cut, Print, Moving On" from the Bombshell Concert.
Mark - I can't find a video clip anywhere -- but I would LOVE IT if you would highlight Cristin Milioti's performance of "If You Want Me" from Once -- it would be a spectacular treat. The two times I saw her perform this song on Broadway, I sobbed at the shear emotion and musicality of the performance. I'll never forget it....
Loving these reaction videos - they get me through slow work days in the pandemic. Would you consider reacting to Bernadette's, "Before the Parade Passes By" in "Hello, Dolly!" Start at, "Ephraim, let me go."
This definitely made me add this song to my audition songs list. You should definitely make more vids that are good for auditions! I’m a mezzo soprano and I’m having trouble finding a song for a good audition! If anyone has any suggestions please let me know 😂💗💗
Acting through song, which is what makes musical theatre the blessed art form it is, reminded me of Glynis Johns and “Send in the Clowns”. Speaking of Sondheim, I’d love to hear your take on some of his work. There was a charming “Ladies Who Lunch” (from his COVID-remote birthday party with Streep, Baranski, and McDonald) that might be fun...
I'd love to see you react to Hans Peter Janssens, a belgian bariton that played Jean Valjean for 3 years on West End and lateron was the longest performing Javert on West End. He also did Phantom, Chess, Jesus Christ Superstar and many others in Belgium.
Hey! I love your videos and was recently cast as crutchie in newsies :) could you plz do a video of Andrew Keenan Bolger doing letter from the refuge? Thanks!
