    Don't forget that Raul Julia (M. Bison) was dying of cancer during the filming, and he only took the role because his kids loved Street Fighter and he thought it would be a good way for them to remember him. Keep in mind that this was his last role he ever took before dying, and if he didn't take this role then his last movie would've been "The Burning Season", which he later won a Golden Globe, and Emmy, and a Screen Actor's Guild award for, posthumously. The man was a total legend.

      I would’ve never thought of Raul Julia, if you were to ask me to cast a Street Fighter movie, as he’s way too small and skinny (and yes, I know he was dying of cancer at the time) and hardly the large, intimidating figure I think Bison should be. But f*** me if he didn’t play that role to perfection. He’s easily, the main reason Street Fighter is one of my favorite movies, in spite of how bad it is.

    I think a lot of video game movies are fun guilty pleasures. But I think Silent Hill is underrated. It was an original plot that I thought was faithful to themes from the source material.

    • @vegeta002
      @vegeta002 6 лет назад +6

      It wasn't supposed to be an original plot, though. A big part of the problem was that they kept telling people they'd get a faithful adaptation of the first game, then giving something that didn't have much in common with the game.
      And mother was most certainly NOT god in the eyes of a child in the game they were supposed to be adapting.

    • @Thy_Boss
      @Thy_Boss 5 лет назад +3

      The real problem with _Silent Hill_ IMO is that it shaped its plot around providing symbolic significance for the same imagery from the games. It was what most video game movies are: an elaborate excuse to show off things fans would recognize from the games, like a trophy room in motion.

      Yes and no. The exception to this that I've seen (yes, I've watched the Tomb Raider movies he was in) is When Evil Calls. True, it was a TV miniseries (think a blend of the 1980 It "miniseries" with the movie One Missed Call with a dash of "The Monkey's Paw"), but it has Sean Pertwee as a janitor, Dominique Pinon as a police detective that is also the poster child for cirrhosis of the liver (he happily pours a bottle of whiskey onto his corn flakes), Chris Barrie as the school headmaster (and father of the main character), and has appearances by Gemma Chan (in her debut role) and Sean Brosnan (Pierce's son).
      The thing was so bad it's good and the biggest saving grace is Chris Barrie pretty much stealing every scene he's in...his fully nude rebuke of a young man (who wished to see through clothes...he was watching a girls' volleyball practice as he received the text, you see) was just *hilarious*.

      Bob Yatron Yeah, they started out fairly rough at first kind of like ancillary pieces. But to be honest, did you go real well with Jane, Mike, and Andy now. Ellen's love for tumor raider, a movie I think is "meh" at best, it is really fun to watch to her emotional expressions. I even saw where one of the posters said she was sick and still that love for the movie shown through. That's awesome.

    I would be really angry that no one mentioned Mortal Kombat, but then I realised, Mortal Kombat was a pretty good movie. The music will never escape my brain, the fight scenes are pretty good, it follows the story pretty well(except the Scorpion-Sub Zero rivalry, but let's be honest, they couldn't stuck a major plot line like this in a 1.5 hour movie), the casting is great (to the point Kano's persona was changed after the movie to be more like that version). Too bad they soiled it's legacy with the second one.

      Sir Billius no, it's because they're usually very bad. Mainly because a good game doesn't always translate to a movie, and a lot of them are from an era where there wasn't the technology to get much story across (although now the problem would be that there's too much story). Doom's story is basically just a paragraph, and 90 minutes of shooting demons isn't really going to work.

      It would be easy to blame critics for Warcraft movie,but it wouldn't be fair. While I liked the movie very much,I can understand that to someone who doesn't know the lore of Warcraft universe it would be confusing.Even a friend that played Warcraft 3 but didn't know the lore beyond(or before) it constantly asked me about who was who and what was what in the movie. And we always say,movie should be capable to stand on it's own and not rely on other mediums to fill the holes up. That being said,I would love if the sequels were made just for fans,which unfortunately is not going to happen. I would love to see Arthas on big screen.

    I have got to agree, that my favourite ever film adaptation of a game, which (whilst not *entirely* faithful to the original material) I personally think improves upon it in several ways, is Silent Hill.
    The characterisation and casting is pretty on point, the atmosphere is bang on and for the most part - extremely effective, it includes the various meditations on the human condition that were the defining aspects of the Silent Hill franchise in Silent Hill 1 and 2, most of the characters are in some way both relatable and believable (with the obvious exception, for most people, of Pyramid Head... unless I have a REALLY bad hangover...) it avoids being too cheesy and is both (contextually) plausible and believable, as are the relationships between the various different characters. So props to you Jane for picking that one. It's an awesome film which I must have watched at least 5 times to date.
    Tomb Raider was pretty good too.
    Also... SEAN BEAN LIVES!!

On a story level, the only interesting part of TES is its deep lore - getting into the creation of the world and how that's no moon, that's a portal to Oblivion. And there's just no way to put that onscreen. Any attempt to film TES would just turn into a third-rate LOTR ripoff.
      TES is best when it's about the stories YOU are making while interacting with the world of Tamriel. That just can't translate to film.

    I should punch myself for saying this, but I kinda liked In The Name Of The King.
    Not in a "it's actually an underrated gem, and despite a few flaws it's perfectly watchable" kind of way. It's just so bad that I come right the way back round to loving it. But also Ron Perlman's in it and that man could be cast as the queen and frankly I'd give the performance and casting a perfect 10/10

    Not to pick favorites, but Jane Douglas is my favorite of the outside xbox/outside xtra team. Literally I agree with everything she discusses. For the Silent Hill movie I remember seeing it in theaters and just loving it. As a fan of Silent Hill I felt the movie did an excellent job. Instead of going with a male lead to play Henry to follow the game more, they chose a female lead, and personally I think Radha Mitchell is phenomenal in every acting role she's portrayed. Check out Pitch Black, it's one of the Chronicles of Riddick movies. Anyway, love this channel and can't stop watching episodes even though I actually have stuff to do today. DAMN YOU FOR BEING SO ADDICTING sorry to scream you know I love you outside xbox/xtra. Keep up the good work!

    Much to their credit, both Raul Julia ,Jean Claude and other actors took their roles seriously, which actually made the film memorable. While I'm not sure if this counts, I thought "Halo 4 Forward unto Dawn" was actually a well done movie. The eye candy laden "Dead or Alive" movie should be included.

      I never knew that the Mario Brothers film was a thing until like 10 years after it came out. When I saw Nostalgia Critic review it the plot strangely seemed familiar to me. Then I realized that roughly 80% of the plot of the Mario Brothers film was lifted from a back to the future animated tv show episode called Forward to the Past which aired a full 2 years before the Super Mario Brothers movie came out.

    Really? I always thought the Mortal Kombat movie was better than Street Fighter. It stuck to the lore of the game where it needed to, took liberties where it needed to, the action was as violent as it could get away with, and the script while incredibly stupid and campy match the tone of the games perfectly. It also effected the series lore in a number of very meaningful ways that still stand to this day like Kano being made an Australian, the number of tournaments being upped from 1 to 10, making Raiden more of a mentor and father figure rather than a vengeful and mostly just bored god out to protect the humans he enjoys messing with, etc. In terms of how much of a positive impact a video game movie had very few reach the heights of the first Mortal Kombat movie, with the notable exception of the Riddick films.

      Ah, fair dues. It's just that every time I've defended Mortal Kombat people have come out to tell me how wrong I am so I thought public opinion on the movie had soured recently. I always thought it was a good/mediocre sci-fi martial arts hybrid but many people say it's puke on celluloid.

    • @CerberusLives
      @CerberusLives 8 лет назад +1

    Mortal Kombat that theme tune always got me "pumped" but perhaps you didn't put it on here because it doesn't have crippling flaws?
    Then I look at Warcraft on your list and that's pretty much faultless in my opinion. Personally I didn't feel I needed any game knowledge beyond what I had from Warcraft 2 which only told me that the races were equal and warring. It has some flaws like every film has but I think it only had trouble floating because people are used to conversions between the media's being so bad, as well as existing IPs having to ride with a complex mixture of perception or preconceptions.

    • @mortemtyrannus8813
      @mortemtyrannus8813 7 лет назад +3

      The reason Warcraft is considered a terrible video game movie is because critics thought it was "too LotR." Because clearly anything that has orcs in it has to be Lord of the Rings-inspired. I mean, why wouldn't it be? Not like there's other fantasy settings out there.
