  • Typical busy tourist lap, except for a BMW M235i to chase! My car has Yokohama Advan AD08r's 225/45-17 and KW V1 suspension. Presumably, the BMW was stock on Michelin PSS tires.

    Just remember. Everybody in Initial D laughed at the underpowered AE86 - and it pretty much crushed every competition thrown at it in the earlier seasons.
    The GT86/BRZ/FR-S is the descendant of the AE86 Trueno. It's not an MR2, nor a Celica, nor a Supra, nor is it some Subie. It's an AE86.

      Please stop talking about anime like it's a real thing that happened.
      First of all, even if it *was* based in reality, Takumi had years of experience on the roads they raced and cheated by grabbing gutters and other crap like that. He also only raced downhill races against unskilled teenagers in heavier cars on tight mountain roads with lots of hairpins and short straights where the AE86 performs at its best.
      Calling the 86 platform an AE86 is a slap in the face to the new 86. The old 86 was a box truck and while I kind of like it in its own way for its unassuming looks and lightweight tossability, the new 86 looks passable for a Ferrari and the chassis and suspension are about as no compromise as you can get for a high volume low cost sports car. Furthermore, the styling is based on the 2000GT from the 60's, so if anything it's a very affordable successor to that car. The new 86 isn't a descendant of anything, it's a completely new fork that takes the best of Toyota's past and puts it all together. With some better tires and right power mods it will take down supercars, I don't think a Sprinter Trueno ever was capable of that.

    • @cybertron1000s
      @cybertron1000s 6 лет назад +9

      Kind went over the point I was trying to make about the sentiments people had in regards to the AE86 in the anime (and possibly why the AE86 is so little known in real life aside from otaku and the serious racing communities) and how that parallels peoples distaste towards the GT86' lack of straight-ward power in modern times or how obsessive they are in regards to numbers and horsepower figures.
      but ok
      You can obsess over the "GT" part of the name and how it links the 86 to the 2000GTs legacy (which I definitely won't deny as that's why the design cues and "GT" exist there in the first place as it's Toyota announcing it's return to it's sports car heritage) and completely forget that GT86 also has the "86" part to it's name which also links it to the (what little) legacy the AE86 has. The point is, the GT86 is a spiritual successor to the AE86 in terms of performance and driving philosophy (that's why in the US it's called a Toyota 86 not a Toyota GT - whereas it's called Toyota GT86 internationally). This is why Toyota has been so reluctant to boost the cars power output or add any turbo to it for the past five years; they don't want to betray it's spirit even though a good chunk of it's market certainly doesn't understand it. It's a light momentum car that's supposed to be good at consistently maintaining higher speeds at turns - like the original 86. It's a drivers car. A good introduction to one as well. It's not specifically designed for performance like the S2000 - but in that alone it parallels the AE86 even more as a practical drivers car.
      You can deny the glaring reality that this car - like it's predecessors - isn't going to beat your buddies in Mustangs and Corvettes in the straights, but that's not the point. I'm trying to make you realize what this car is - a drivers car. Mustangs or Corvettes aren't drivers cars - this is; a more mature perspective into driving and cars and a full appreciation for the hobby in it's purest totality. Granted, if you're North American I can understand why you might feel insecure about the GT86 lacking power. Nobody really knows what the the AE86 is which is why people get confused it doesn't have the power of a Supra or a Subaru (cars North Americans do know) and Toyota has to suffer the consequences of misplaced expectations.

    • @nunyabusiness896
      @nunyabusiness896 6 лет назад +1

      The 86 was because of the bore and stroke, anything else is anime fan dreaming.
      They haven't added power because the selling volume is already too low to make much profit and an even more limited turbo would need to be too expensive compared to what people would pay and would embarrass the WRX STI and upcoming Supra replacement as well as current Lexus high-end models. Furthemore, no matter how much power it had, people would still complain, so they'd rather let the aftermarket cover supercharging and turbocharging, of which there are mountains of options. Personally, I don't boost my car because it would need to be running sub 12s 1/4 miles to be exciting from acceleration alone and at that point it would be too expensive and likely unreliable to daily drive and I already have a race kart if I really want to go bonkers fast. Besides, at any legal speeds it's already plenty fast if you know how to drive, only people in automatics or that can't drive manual properly think otherwise.

    • @PetrolApes

      Multiple reasons, but one major thing is that the insurance increased so much over the years (much more than a Porsche) and there were several little issues where Toyotas Service was very bad. I bought an Mazda MX5 ND instead. The general cost of the MX5 are much less and for me the engine feels a lot sportier (despite the low redline at 6,7k rpm [which they fixed in the 2018 variant, damn it :D]). Also the low weight is very attractive. Problem: The car is so super tiny that for me with gf and dog I can't use it anymore as a daily driver (which the GT86 would have been capable off) [got the dog aprox 1 year after the MX5 so I didn't see that coming]). If you have any further questions just ask :)

    • @PetrolApes
      @PetrolApes 6 лет назад +1

      No worries, doesn't cost me anything but a few minutes to reply ;) Yeah that topic is problematic - in general for used cars. Tbh i'd go with something alot cheaper for the beginning. If you don't have the small-car-problem then i'd definetly would look out for a cheap MX5 NA / NB and learn driving, drifting etc. with that car. In worst case you can wreck it and did just loose a fraction of what you would loose when wrecking an GT86. Furthermore you can do much more yourself on these cars (even timing belts are no problem if you read some manuals etc.). With that you can see if that hobby is really something for you, you got a lot of experience and maybe wisely used your money otherwise.

Still, it looks like you know the track, and knowing the track makes all the difference. Those that said a 200hp hatch is quicker sometimes than modern Ferrari's and shit... Stop playing Forza... they are just cautious with a 300K + car while a 200hp hatch is replaceable all day.

    I bought a 2013 FR-S new. After the first set of tires and an experiment with Bridgestone Potenza's, all I put on it was Michelin Pilot SS and now, Michelin Pilot S4's. I drove a 150 mile round trip commute to Louisville, about 2/3 of it on beautifully maintained Kentucky twisties. And never saw a cop on those roads. I went through nine sets of tires and 185k miles. Then the pandemic hit a year ago and I work from home. Now I drive it to church on Sundays to make sure the seals don't rot. I'm selling it.
    I "raced" to work every day and that video kinda reminded me of my commute except I didn't brake much. My first brake job was at 142k miles. I used the gears to brake a lot (manual Transmission). I've gotten my fill of hard twisty driving, and that car lived up to its reputation. It had all the power I need and is the most fun I've ever had in a car. I'm old school and that car was a LOT better than my old Opel GT. :)

      I love the beemer, i also loved the gt86, but with the beemer you just get so much more overall. Driving wise, they are both great cars. Loved the gt86 on some backroads with tight corners. Same with the m235i. The thing i love the most about the m235i is that when you're just cruising around it is such a refined and comfortable ride, then you turn on Sport+ and you got an incredibly fun and sporty car. And even in a straight line, it really feels fast. The gt86, not so much. You really gotta push that car through tight corners to get the feeling that it is quick.
      And the balance in the beemer is just incredible. And to top it all off, the m235i looks incredible. Though the first thing i did was to get rid of the awful stock wheels that really does'nt do the car justice. With some updated wheels and M performance exhaust, it's one hell of a car.

    • @MadelnMachines

      Im currently considering the M235i after enjoying the GT86 but wanting more straight line thrills and getting pinned back in my seat. I also want something nicely balanced but with the ability to drift. Do you have the LSD installed on yours? I really enjoyed the power and sound of the 370z so maybe I want a smallish nimble car that's fast, loud and exciting to drive with the ability to get drifty relatively easily if i want.

      The 235 driver is useless. The GT86 driver is less useless.
      I regularly drive GT86/BRZ quite quickly - it's a nice car. It has good balance and inspires confidence. It could do with more power.
      My weekend drive is a 944T - it has a bit more power and a bit more weight than an 86/BRZ and has 30+ year old suspension, making it more twitchy. In the dry a GT86 wouldn't see where I went.
      The BMW was wrong - either it was badly set up (eg incorrect tyre pressures) or the driver had limited talent, or both. Without extra power a GT86 should only keep up in the corners.
      At this level the most important component is the nut behind the wheel.

    We need some Initial D eurobeat for this driver. All he wanted was to deliver some Tofu and that BMW kept blocking the way :D 86 for the win!

  • @TheChannel1978
    @TheChannel1978 6 лет назад +1

    m235i is a much faster car. You can see the power difference at Bergwerk climb starting at 4:21. The reason the 86 is keeping up because there is so much traffic and the BMW is taking the corners slower (more carefully). Both great cars but an 86 could not keep up with a m235i -at all- on an empty track with the same driver.

    86 will always be my favorite. But i saw your arms are almost straight and you knees are almost touching the front, which is very uncomfortable. You are too tall for this car. i think you need a steering wheel extender.

    Hoe bevalt de KW V1 set onder een 86? Lijkt me erg interessante set heb deze ook onder mijn MX5 , volgende week de GT86 ophalen bij louwman 😃

    • @Quaddriver2
      @Quaddriver2  4 года назад

      De V1 is een budget basis coilover setje. Reeds een mooie upgrade t.o.v. origineel uiteraard. Maar voor circuit haal je best iets anders in huis; minimum V3 en liefst de Clubsport variant met echt regelbare camber en harder geveerd.

    Great driving. I am not trying to take anything away from you but there are a lot of reasons to why 86 can overtake the Bmw in the end.
    1. Good driving, probably better driver who knows the track better.
    2. a lot of traffic that stops the Bmw from shaking 86 off entirely. Every time Bmw try to pull ahead he has to slow down because not every one let him pass immediately and that's when 86 catches up.Also, for every one that says gt 86 catches up in the corner because the distance between the cars got a lot shorter, I have to disagree. Even if you have 2 exact same cars, the distance between the cars during corner is always going to be shorter than in straights because both cars are slower. The Bmw also has to slow down even more in the corners regardless of skills if the traffic infront of him slowed down.
    4. In the end the Bmw just let him pass probably don't want to handle the pressure of some one constantly tailing him.
    Put two equally skilled driver in the two cars with the same suspension, anti roll bar and tire upgrade then, I am confident that the Bmw 235i will come out on top of every traffic-free track, straight or curvy. the raw horse power and chassis rigidity is just there. If the BMW is xdrive, then there is no competition

      Of course the M235i is a faster car. I confirm that, I currently own one with 400hp. Check out my other videos on the channel.

    It's all about the driver. And if you're familiar with the track you're driving on.
    I've seen a Mazda mx5 nd chase Porsches down on this track, and it passed many bmws and other high caliber cars.
    Driver first, car second 👍

    It’s a matter of the chassis and of the driver but I doubt that the BMW car is worse in curves than the Toyota, so it was the pilote who made the difference, if my deduction is right i.m.h.o.

    I own one. For my intermediate level of driving it's more than suitable on a back road but in commute city driving, the lack of mid torque CAN be fucking exasperating. But I forgive it because it's such a special little machine. I even forgive those ridiculously sadistically Japanese headrests that angle your face into your crotch.
