I really appreciate videos like this because more and more …you are only seeing booktubers review the same books. While I like to hear different viewpoints from people on the same book, I do get bored of it after seeing too many on the same book. I lose interest.
❤📚📚❤️ I trust you, Angela, and added every book to my list, but one (already have The Chaperone to read). These sound so good! Thank you for the recommendations.
I've read The Chaperone - Laura Moriarty is a writer I really enjoy. My favorite of hers is "The Center of Everything" but I too liked "The Chaperone". Thank-you for the other recommendations. I also really enjoy Geraldine Brooks - but I've not read the one you talked about. I added it to my list.
Very interesting video - thanks you so much. I have downloaded samples of the Geraldine Brooks book (I see she is a Pulitzer Prize winner, albeit not for this book) and the Sara Sheridan book.
Absolutely loved People of the Book! You’re right though, when you mention it you get blank stares. The Fair Botanist sounds fascinating. The Colour by Rose Tremain on gold rush in NZ is excellent too. I’m with you on Cleopatra, the book sounds interesting…must add to list! Thank you for a great list!
I loved The People of the Book, but Hannah really annoyed me. I didn't like her character. I should read it again in case my opinion of her has changed in the past 16 years.
Hi Angela, I loved this video 😀 People of the Book is my favourite Geraldine Brooks story. I'll be sure to try some of those others you described so attractively
Yay another fantastic Aussie booktuber that I accidentally stumbled across! I’ve read a couple of these books but the others sound great. Love the way you review them too. 😊
It does not have to be a 5 star to be memorable. I love historical fiction and i have not heard of most of these. The fair botanist i agree was a good book, the scene where palm trees are being walked up the street, just captivating! People of the book sounds fascinating. When we were gods sounds good, have you tried Michelle Moran’s Nefertiti? I enjoyed that a lot 😊
Of course we read historical fiction so we can learn about points in history without reading a dull text book. I enjoy Geraldine Brooks and her research always seems solid..I liked People of the Book also!
Just found your channel and a fellow Aussie. I highly recommend Minette Walters The Last Hours and its sequel The Turn of Midnight. These are about the Black Death. Sound grim but we can all relate after the COVID years. She also wrote a great stand alone The Swift and the Harrier. Another favourite has been Ken Follet’s The Pillars of the Earth which I first read over 30 years ago. In 2020 he wrote The Evening and the Morning as a prequel to TPOTE. Loved that one too. Jackie French is an Australian author and a favourite. Try The Angel of Waterloo, No Hearts of Gold, Becoming Mrs Mulberry. Oh dear, could list books all day 😂
Angela, I just stumbled across your channel and I subscribed right away. I could identify with you when you said you had been in sort of a reading slump. Same here, but my hiatus from reading came from a few health issues but now I'm ready to get back in the reading game. So when I find a video from a person who is well-spoken, knowledgeable and obviously loves reading then I count myself lucky. I didn't mention that I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather. So solid recommendations from you is a big help. Much respect to you from Larry in the U.S.
Oh, I too am in the grandmother;grandfather category. I shudder when the 60’s and 70’s are talked about as historical fiction!! I loved Angela. I just discovered her, and I’m delighted.
Me too - just stumbled onto this channel, and subscribed. Greetings from Central California Coast! Looking forward to The gold in this Hills and the Cleopatra book, especially, but liked all the suggestions. I have read People of the Book, but didn't think that was her best book. IMHO her best was The year of the Plague; sounds grim, but the writing was lyrical and full of well-drawn characters.
Thanks for the great recommendations! When We Were Gods sounds fabulous. I'm also interested in The Gold in These Hills and People of the Book. Thanks!
I read People of the book and loved it! Margaret George also wrote a book about Cleopatra, haven’t read it yet though. I really loved her novel Mary, called Magdalene.
Margaret George is a marvelous author. She writes long novels, but it flys by because it is such good writing. I have read her books on Henry VIII, and Mary, Queen of Scots. Both sent me down a rabbit hole of books about the Tudors. Haven't gotten to the Cleopatra book yet, but I'm sure it will be good. I got the audio version of the "Autobiography of Henry VII ". Part of the time Henry is speaking (some parts are hilariously sarcastic) and others are spoken about him by his Fool. I've listened multiple times, and it never gets old!
People of the Book is excellent! I think I've read all of her books except Horse, which I own but haven't gotten to. Great list. I've added a couple to my tbr.
Hi Angela. I have not heard of these books before. I do used book shopping at least twice a year (library and hospital) and come away with some books that no one has ever talked about and they're pretty good. I love reading about other countries-Brotherless Night (Sri Lanka), Spring Moon (China), etc. Historical fiction can be a good way to learn about history and readers can root for the characters in the stories.
Thanks for mentioning all these books, Angela! I must pick up People of the Book. Funnily enough, Geraldine Brooks got me out of a reading slump years ago with The Year of Wonders - have you read it? She’s such a wonderful writer! I’ll have a good look at the other books you mentioned, they all seem great.
The books that get 5 stars from me are exceptional in story, writing style, and engaging characters. So these would be most likely to stick with me much longer. My take on your 5 stars comment. Just found your videos. Hello.
I couldn’t get on with People of the Book😢 had to DNF. So far Ive added some of the rest to my tbr! You have a wonderful way of making the books seem so accessible! I am thoroughly enjoying your channel❤🇨🇦 ps: Have you read Tracy Chevalier’s Remarkable Creature? A fav historical fiction of mine.
Oh no, sorry to hear POTB didn't work out for you but glad you found another rec :) I feel like a goose doing these videos so I am so happy they come across well! Thanks for the rec from Chevalier
I really enjoyed how you talked about why you liked each book. You made the characters and place and time so interesting. Thank you. I have read the Fellowes book, the gold rush book, and the one about the letters.( I immediately forgot the titles.). May I suggest The Second Mrs.Adams? It is about the wife of John Quincy Adams, but it does not take place in America. It is a good read!
Thank you for the interesting recommendations. I will be looking into all the books you reviewed. And a couple of the recommendations in the comments also sound interesting to me. I’m happy to have found your channel.

I hear you!
Agreed!
Yep!
I added When We Were Gods to my list! I had not heard of it, but I love Greek/Roman History so I’m excited to find it & give it a go! Thank you ❣️
I am so glad you are going to read it!
I agree that People of the Book sticks with you. She’s not my cup of tea as an author but she is an excellent storyteller.
Such a wonderful story 💗
Thank you for the wonderful recommendations. It’s nice to hear about books that everyone else isn’t mentioning. 😊
You are very welcome! I am glad you enjoyed it.
❤📚📚❤️
I trust you, Angela, and added every book to my list, but one (already have The Chaperone to read).

Back again. I am a huge fan of When Calls the Heart, so I had to look up The Gold in These Hills, and it has moved to the top of my TBR.
Haha! 2 books on the TBR is an excellent outcome! You’ll love this one

I agree - it is such a great way to learn!
People of the Book is my favorite Geraldine Brooks novel. I haven't read Caleb's Crossing or The Secret Chord yet.
I tried The Secret Chord and couldn't get into it. DNF'd unfortunately! ;( Such a shame. It was highly recommended to me.
Thank you SO much for this video! I hope you do more backlist favs! I’m adding all of these to my TBR🥰
Thank you!

I'm so glad!! Year of Wonders is very high on my TBR at the moment. Hopefully a summer read by the pool ;)
Oh thank. you - I just wrote the wrong title (not the Year of the Plague), but The Year of Wonders. It was fantastic!
I ❤ People of the Book. It was beautiful.
I loved it, too!
Truly wonderful story

I really liked The Chaperone too. My book club read it last year. Lots to discuss.
Wonderful!
❤❤❤📚👍🏾👍🏾Great book reviews!
So glad you enjoyed them!
I prefer Geraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders to People of the Book.
Year of Wonders is high on my TBR. Hoping to get to it this summer :)

warm hands of the dove has not be hyped and it was wonderful.

The Fair Botanists makes me think you might like Bedlam Stacks--have you read? One of my favorites!
I haven't but I will check it out now. Thanks for the rec!

Yes, I don't have a lot of time to read so what I read needs to be 4.5 to 5.0 😊
Its a struggle. So many books to read and so little time :)
The Bridge of San Luis Rey
An Officer and a Spy
neither are about female protagonists and neither are Australian. Interested?
Thanks for the recommendations
