I use a water boiler and still microwave it 1 min, because it's faster than waiting for the noodle to soften up. Sometimes I would also crack an egg and add in some frozen toppings like cut beef ball, fish ball, tofu, some green or seaweed, and artificial crab, cover the bowl and I microwave it all together.
At least you still boil water and not straight up put it in the microwave. I think Bettel's main issue in that discussion was using Instant Ramen* which might have conjured an image of the noodles wrapped in plastic in peoples minds. If he had said Cup Noodles instead I think more people would have caught onto what he was talking about, because I know for certain those have very clear instructions on them telling you how to heat them in the microwave.

Bettel is right you can microwave 99 cent ramen for 3 minute but the only thing you need to make sure of is to have enough water cause with the perfect water amount when the 3 minutes are done your 99 cent ramen will have a excellent brown color to it with a strong flavor.
