Ascension had the best blades in the entire series. The sound of the blades slamming, the tight feeling of its swings, and the leash mechanic. Just so good...
I get ya, it's cool when the fire swiftly moves through the air and sounds like it's cutting through enemy armor. Then the heavy slam making a mini explosion is sick as hell. The rusted look of the blades is probably my favorite out of the entire series.@@japs829

Kratos initially had the Blades of Chaos given to him by Ares as a sign of his servitude to him, the blades were permanently attached to Kratos's arms and Kratos continued to use them as his main weapons even after he broke off ties with Ares to serve Athena, Ares eventually removed the Blades of Chaos from Kratos during their fight at Athens after defeating Ares, Kratos is given the Blades of Athena by Athena as a replacement and he would wield those weapons while he was acting as the God of War, the Blades of Athena were eventually destroyed when Kratos fell into the Underworld due to Gaea's betrayal the specter of Athena then transformed the ruined Blades of Athena into the Blades of Exile as a way of earning back Kratos's trust, but Kratos later abandons those blades and beat Zeus to death with his bare hands after being revived from the brink of death upon releasing hope to the world, Kratos saw that the Blades of Chaos had come back for him, although he could now attach and dettach them at will, he never wanted to use them again, because he wanted to forget his past, but those blades didn't let him and followed him all the way to Egypt, Kratos was then forced to carry the Blades of Chaos with him all the way to Norse Midgard, he kept them hidden and sealed underneath his home, but he had to use them again to save his son
Having the blades of exile in the Nordic realm would make more sense, since they were not destroyed by Zeus, he only disarmed Kratos in the final battle, since the blades of Athena were destroyed in River Styx like you said, they would be his primary weapon and always will come back to him.

Do you mean as how does he have the blades of chaos in the newer titles or why they "swapped" in gow 2. If you mean the latter then they haven't swapped in gow 2, they just get heavily downgraded and look like more like the blades of chaos but still are the blades of Athena. If you mean newer titles then idk it's not really explained.
Athena gave you the blades at max capacity It just so happens Kratos gave away that very ability and the Blades of Athena turned orange And Kratos gets the Red Blades of Athena instead of blue because he powered the blades with his own rage + red orbs.

2018 ultimately has the better sound design but between it and acension cant decide which has better elemental effects

Always make sure before fight with ares that you have max level blades of chaos because you will get replace them as a athena’s blades
