If you ever learn more about OME you'll see that comedy niche runs deep. A couple of my favorite songs of his are both "Dark Comedy Morning Show" and "Dark Comedy Late Show." Dude was actually Hannibal Buress' RA in college.
yes it is his son at the end. also it's his son Assa doing the chorus on Assa's bop. i wanna say he came up with it which make that joint kinda like awww. heartwarming. dope review. props. you mos def a Joestar!
Great review! Mike is amazing at using humor to delve deep into both his psyche and social issues, though those themes are more present in his earlier work, which is even better than this album, in my opinion. I'd especially recommend Dark Comedy and Brick Body Kids Still Daydream. The latter is definitely one of hip-hop's best conceptual pieces. Also gonna plug Billy Woods again since I'm here and I'd really love to hear your thoughts on him.
Excellent review. Your unique take on this makes it all the more amazing how well you put this together. Open Mike Eagle created a perfect album and this nails what it's all about. Good stuff man!
I think I'm at the point where I look forward to your reviews more than anyone else's. This was great! I don't know his entire discography, but Brick Body Kids Still Daydream from 2017 is a masterpiece tackling race and gentrification in America. It's a great parallel to Kendrick's To Pimp A Butterfly. Check that one out, for sure.
On Asa Bop you can hear Open Mike Eagle's son singing (or boping) :) I think on another album he rapped about changing his son's diapers. The guy's definitely so creative
Open Mike Eagle's discog is something you will love. He has amazing projects that tackle class, race, gentrification, all with a great sense of humor and performances. This album was his most personal, but his other stuff is way edgier. Try them out, I am sure you will love him.
thank you for the review! it's pretty awesome to see someone with no idea who OME is totally get his style from the first listen of one album. gonna echo the recommendations from other comments and suggest Brick Body Kids. great great album, though if you have a big backlog and cant get around to it, i strongly suggest you at least check out the song '(How Could Anybody) Feel At Home'. one of my fav rap songs ever, and as great as the album is, that song stands high over any other song of his i've heard. just got chills thinking of listening to it lol. also if youre looking for a recent album, My Agenda by Dorian Electra is a very fun listen. very similar to 1000 Gecs Remix album in terms of insanity but with more narrative structure to work with lyrically. thanks again for consistently pumping out fun, insightful reviews!!
He told his friend Baron Vaughn, that they shouldn't call the show, what they called the show. I think it got cancelled/bad ratings, because of the name. Pretty good show, but a simple comedy, that specifically tried to prop up obscure "voices of color", at times to their detriment 😞 Some of them weren't quite ready for prime time... Or, needed the audience love of a Chappelle Show to break out. If they had brought on more already famous voices, the ones they chose may have gotten more hype. He's a great, reflective person generally though. "I Drink Whiskey, I do Push Ups" was a recent great track before this, but also his album "Brick Body Kids Still Daydream", is... Imho... Another masterpiece you should review.
So my introduction to open mic was through believe it or not two door Cinema club. There's a song that kind of you know had us upbeat dance field and it just for the first time in their four albums they had a wrap on it and I was like okay this is weird and of course with open mic the flow is completely all over the place and a good way. So after gym in the song for damn near a year and finally we like really picking up what he was saying I was like oh s*** let me look up who this dude is and of course I come across it is being open mike eagle. Since then I pretty much bought his entire catalog I mean you know there were some deals on bandcamp or you can get a you know a four or five albums and get like a 30% discount which is kind of cool and then for the other stuff I bought it through Amazon or what not but lots of good stuff lots of good stuff. Brick body kids ,when I try to relax, dark comedy the album and the EP (completely different tracks) , the new negroes television show soundtrack which there are videos on RUclips of each song. And then there's a hidden gem somewhere of his that I had to find titled Sir Rockabye . Degrassi picture day is an amazing track
I would like to hear you review Brockhampton’s Saturation trilogy. They’re a self proclaimed boy band that all met on the internet and moved in with each other. They dropped 3 albums together in less than a year; the saturation trilogy. Very good music, very good content.
Open Mike did a live record release stream to benefit Dynasty Typewriter, and if you’re interested in the background (specifically on personal and anime stuff) it would help round out your understanding of the topics
Awesome review. By the way, Jake Luppen (lead singer of Hippo Campus) released a solo album a little over a week ago. It's an experimental indie / electronic album. Extremely different from Hippo Campus, and I'm very interested to hear what you have to say about it. His solo project name is Lupin, and the name of the album is also Lupin.
Ok, you probably won't do this....but I highly recommend watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and the ending "movie" End of Evangelion in Japanese. They are both on Netflix. It's an anime. It's not long. The movie was released a year after the series finale, but it is the real finale...they just didn't have the budget to make the ending they wanted earlier. The show starts a bit slow, and feels like a typical, kind of cheesy, kind of boring kids fighting show....but if you truly stick it through, I have a feeling you will love the themes of the show and how it explores all that it does, plus all of the symbolism (especially in End of Evangelion). I can't say I'm an anime fan, but that show made me want to watch way more. Whether Shinji is an "idiot" is....debatable. Also yes, Open Mike Eagle is great. I second the Dark Comedy to Brick Body Kids Still Daydream comment.
Hey, just in time, I just finished the album and that final track with his son made me decide "Nope, never listening to this album again" since I felt like this one's too emotionally draining for me to put on heavy rotation. I'm very positive the only ruined marriage in a Black Mirror ep would be The Entire History of You, the one with the memory-recording lenses. As mentioned by commenters before me, Brick Body Kids Still Daydream is probably his best and most consistent album. And I know you like to talk about more recent albums but I would be very interested to hear what you have to say of Royce Da 5'9" - The Allegory which was released earlier this year. Despite the sus transphobic and anti-vaxx lines, it's probably one of the best political records of the year so far. And would also like to hear what you think of Billy Woods' albums from last decade like Hiding Places (which is a stark portrait of poverty) and History Will Absolve Me (an album with topics ranging from colonialism to critiquing rap culture to denouncing war crimes and many more).
His run of albums/EPs from Dark Comedy to Brick Body Kids Still Daydream was amazing
Headass (Idiot Shinji) really got me off my chair when I saw the title and got the Evangelion classic anime flashback lol
If you ever learn more about OME you'll see that comedy niche runs deep. A couple of my favorite songs of his are both "Dark Comedy Morning Show" and "Dark Comedy Late Show." Dude was actually Hannibal Buress' RA in college.
Thanks for the info, its useful.

Your view points are so refreshing, concise and articulate. Thank you.
I just now noticed the Alphonse plushy, I can respect it

This was an incredible review, definitely subbing. I recommend his last album Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, you'll love it!

I am very sorry but for some reason I had to laugh when you mentioned the stuffed toy behind you...

If you want to see another incredibly open wound of a divorce album check out of Montreal's Aureate Gloom.
now i want to get you into anime. watch demon slayer or cowboy bebop if you have the rime to. thanks for the thoughtful review!
also open mike talked about shinji from neon genisis evangelien

REVIEW THE NEW DERIDOORIAN ALBUM
Much more insightful review then Fantano .. (Don’t care if Fantano operates differently focusing on the music side, to all you melon heads)
seen fannys review then came here. lol
Best album of his career to me but everything is this good
