I don't have anything against Duvall, but man, when you hear Layne sing, it's - lights out. The difference in energy is like night and day. God damn, I miss Layne so much.....
was that night and day reference a racial thing?? 😑😑 lol I kid I kid but yeah I agree, the feel when Layne sings it is much more real than when Duvall sings it.
I think the main problem with Duvall is while vocally he tends to be spot on, he's to much of a fan of the band. What I mean by that is he looks so happy up there when he's singing, which is understandable because he is on stage with Alice in Chains. However, singing "Down in a hole" with a koolaid smile sucks the life right out of the song and makes it even more of an impossible task to sing with anywhere near the same emotion as Layne.
Totally agree with this, he looks like he's fronting some 80s hair metal band with all the dancing about, it's ruins the atmosphere of the songs. Don't get me wrong though, Duvall is a bloody great singer.
This is a great live performance of Layne singing "Rain When I Die." Just classic Alice. And for the record, it did rain in Seattle on the day when this beautiful spirit died.
Layne had the best voice of the 90's in my opinion. Really not even close. I love Cobain, Cornell, Vedder, Weiland, Hoon, etc. etc. etc. but Layne's was just fucking stupendous.
@@Banana_Split_Cream_Buns there is definitely things that Chris can do that layne couldn’t, and things layne could do that Chris couldn’t. I guess it just depends on who you feel more at the end of the day, both deserve an equal amount of credit for there talents.

You have the internet and the ability to find literally anything that you might want to listen to easily. There's been good bands/artists that have come out since the 90s too. You have access to music that is not only out now, but you also have access to music that has come out since the record industry popped into existence and you can also find independent artists easily. The only thing that you're missing out on currently is the ability to see bands that aren't around anymore (or aren't as good as they once were) live, so it's silly to complain about being young and how you were born in the wrong generation. Layne's alternative version of the second chorus is hauntingly beautiful; first the power note, and the second time around that unexpected melody. It works in a such a strange way. If you watch Rock in Rio you will find another magical moment when they play It ain't like that and he does an alternative version there too that fucking rocks. Hugs and kisses, peace out...

Obsessed with this performance of one of my top favorite aic songs. I love this performance in particular because of the way Layne sings the second chorus. Has anyone picked up on the variation? This is the only time I've ever heard him sing it this way. When he says "I think it's gonna rain" the gonna is drawn out a tiny tiny bit longer and he dips down before going up higher on the word rain. I don't know music notes so I don't know how else to describe it. But it gives me chills to the bones every time I hear it. Go to like 2:12 I think off the top of my head and brace yourself.
Totally with you on that variation. I listen to this version over and over specifically just for that part. Layne's vocals always give me chills, but that part gives me chills on chills on chills.
He did that variation in other shows too. Try finding the Frankfurt concert from the same tour. He also did something similar for Man in the Box a few times. This is one of my favorite aic songs too, and probably my favorite album ever.

I just saw AIC in Charlotte, NC last night. William DuVall is absolutely amazing. Of course he's not Layne. But the guy does this song, as well of the rest of them, legitimate justice. I'll admit that he seemed a little bit shaky when he first joined the band. Now, that's not the case. He's grown into his role beautifully. They sounded flawless. Period. I think it's great that they're back and playing these songs.
This comment is 13 years old but I just wanted to say that I was also at this show in charlotte when they first got back together. I was 16 and couldn’t believe they were back together and how incredible they sounded. Cheers bro hope the past 13 years have been good to you
look at how far back these comments go I never brag but I have to say AIC fans from back in the day are the most dedicated and biggest hearted fans the comments will keep pouring in past this time i hope if his family both of their families Mike was mouth watering in many ways but that these comments make them happy to know what a permanent mark these men made inside so many people and how much it still hurts us that they are gone because we did know how special they were and miss them not too many people in the world can make you feel a certain feeling that makes your toes curl
Alice In Chains w/ Layne as the frontman will always hold a very special place in my heart. Through their music they have shown me that it's okay to learn how to accept this cruel, heartless, and cold reality that we all struggle to live in. Thanks to Adam Gontier's performance of Rooster, I was introduced to AIC.
If we have any scientists in here or music theory people, I would really like to know why the bit at 2:26 sounds so fucking incredible. Some kind of harmony or something. Should have sung it like that on the album. P.s. song is not nearly as well known as is should be. Top 10 maybe top 5.
The note he sings is down to the C# which is in the A chord which Cantrell plays rather than the higher A so that explains the harmonic element. Layne is also blessed by angels. I also think the crowd are singing the A and somehow it just sounds epic as a harmony. It adds a weird choral effect that you don't usually hear on an AIC track.
Agree. Layne live sends one on an AiC binge. To be fair, the studio album version is still excellent. I do agree with you in regards to this being an underrated song. The other underrated ones for me are "Rotten Apple," "Confusion," "Am I Inside," "Head Creeps," "Frogs," and "Shame in you."
you're welcome! I really wanted to see more layne shows here on youtube, that's why I'm uploading some...expecially young kids have to see how it was with him...
AIC FOREVER!!! Didnt get to see Layne went to rehab when i was gonna see them with Metallica in 93. Saw them in L.A. 4 weeks ago...rocked out for 2 1/2 hrs. straight RIP Layne...it did rain
Studio Layne was awesome. Live Layne, on days when he was feeling strong, was the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard. He just poured himself out, so effing raw and unchained.
To come back out takes a lot of heart, That new singer had huge shoes to fill, hes got balls, the whole band does for that, Iam happy their still rocking. Great Music Great band, and even better people.
@afoolisharrangement you're totally right... he wasn't singing but screaming his soul out to the world. That's something you can't replace, no matter how much talent or dedication
You can see that Jerry is totally blown away by Layne throughout their european tour. Holy hell. The power coming out of Layne is freaking unreal. ALICE is off the chain here. This tour is fire.

Slowly forgive my lie, lying to save me
Could she love me again, or will she hate me
Prob'ly not, I know why, can't explain me
Did she call my name?
I think it's gonna rain
When I die
Beautifully haunting song about lost love! rip layne and mike!
The earth needs more people who love this band.
Dont know u but i know i could love u just from your post. Know what i mean? Soul music
I've heard a lot of voices but Layne's and Cornell's blow all of em out the boat, just damn!
One of my all time favorite bands
damn. those melody changes were beautiful
His voice is like a choir of tortured souls... Un-fucking-believable!!!
Cheers bro hope the past 13 years have been good to you
Never Gets Old
Such a fucking gift to have a voice like that.. unbelievable.
look at how far back these comments go I never brag but I have to say AIC fans from back in the day are the most dedicated and biggest hearted fans the comments will keep pouring in past this time i hope if his family both of their families Mike was mouth watering in many ways but that these comments make them happy to know what a permanent mark these men made inside so many people and how much it still hurts us that they are gone because we did know how special they were and miss them not too many people in the world can make you feel a certain feeling that makes your toes curl
The other underrated ones for me are "Rotten Apple," "Confusion," "Am I Inside," "Head Creeps," "Frogs," and "Shame in you."
one of the best songs in history of music. layne's the man. what a voice. greatest singer of all time.
This is the only AiC song with songwriting credits given to all 4 band members.
this song is addicting i keep coming for more and more
Every song is pure fucking genius
Goodness, I can't stop watching this!
one of their best songs. so sick
Never heard anybody else able to sing this or Man in the Box the same. Untouchable.
ive watched this thing like 20 times and ive gotten chills every time when layne breaks into the first chorus , he was fucking amazing
this gives me goose bumps
you're welcome! I really wanted to see more layne shows here on youtube, that's why I'm uploading some...expecially young kids have to see how it was with him...
This video is absolutely insane😳🤯
AIC FOREVER!!! Didnt get to see Layne went to rehab when i was gonna see them with Metallica in 93. Saw them in L.A. 4 weeks ago...rocked out for 2 1/2 hrs. straight RIP Layne...it did rain
theres no chance anybody would hate on layne c'mon this guy was a pure genius
That first scream literally gave me chills, his voice cuts through all that music and the fuzziness of the old video
Studio Layne was awesome. Live Layne, on days when he was feeling strong, was the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard. He just poured himself out, so effing raw and unchained.
My favorite AIC song. Damn Layne was a god!
At 2:43 Jerry Cantrell looks at Layne and shakes his head.
To come back out takes a lot of heart, That new singer had huge shoes to fill, hes got balls, the whole band does for that, Iam happy their still rocking. Great Music Great band,
and even better people.
All time favorite song by AIC. So much soul and emotions shoved into one song. Great riff.
@afoolisharrangement you're totally right... he wasn't singing but screaming his soul out to the world.
That's something you can't replace, no matter how much talent or dedication
2:25 that note, that pitch, that magic...
You can see that Jerry is totally blown away by Layne throughout their european tour. Holy hell. The power coming out of Layne is freaking unreal. ALICE is off the chain here. This tour is fire.
