Those ugly designs are due to 5 factors: 1. Chinese Market. From now on, the more conservative designed cars will be X1, X3, X5 and 1,3,5 series. The others will have those big grills and etc… 2. Chinese like to be driven and show up more than everything 3. CEO’s decision, because the design team always come up with 3 different models, and the CEO decides which one to produce 4. EV drag coefficient, because now these models have a full EV variation 5. Try to reach younger conseumers This is all strategy. In my opinion, a wrong one, but…
why BMW is putting soft materials in the rear doors in the X2 and not in the X1 is a mystery. Nice cars but prices are out of control nowadays. Nice review Thomas
The reason for those prices now it’s because, after the pandemic, all automakers noticed that is better to fight for profit on a unit sold over having more market share
And regarding the materials, the difference between the X1 and X2 rear door panels it’s just that in the X2, there is a foam layer between the plastic shell and the rapped PVC vinyl Because the X1 doesn’t have this foam layer, gives the sensation it’s hard, but both of them have a PVC vinyl added to the hard plastic shell Only the lower part is hard plastic

Honestly there is something very wrong with the exterior design...i just don't know how to explain. The side profile alone just looks weird, the overall proportions seem to be completely off. But maybe it is just me and in reality it might look better, who knows...
Top is too small for the bottom. The previous x2 was a nice looking car. This is a monster. Too aggressive. Are they trying to be an American muscle car?
Hey, thanks for the excellent review of the new X2s, which are ready to go on sale this coming Monday, March 4th. Yes, I was originally dreaming of ordering an X6 M, moving up from my leased full-boat X3 M, but when I saw the initial media coverage of this car back in November, I said, What the hell, maybe this would be a more appropriate vehicle for me, and my wife too, now that we're in our early 80s. So, I plopped down a deposit and "ordered" one, the first week of December, a Vegas red M35i with all the options like my X3. It's less than half the price of the X6, $20K less than another X3 M, and per your review, probably going to be a load of fun for an active old geezer who's lived life with performance cars, airplanes, motorcycles, boats, and... women. At just over $60K, the car's a deal, particularly contrasted with "lighter" versions of M-B AMGs, Jags, Audis, etc. Delivery could be in three months or so to Pennsylvania, USA. I've learned that getting a BMW from Greer, SC, is a hell of a lot quicker and more predictable than from the plant in Regensburg. Obviously. Now as for your soft criticisms of the M35i, plus those of others on RUclips, sure, the car's a compromise. What car isn't? Even the fire-breathing X6 M dream car. So's life. So I'm looking forward to buzzing around in my little Red Rocket whenever it shows up. Again, it's a bargain in my opinion. And again, thanks for the super review. And... in my 80s, I still try to live by the philosophy behind Sheryl Crow's old song, "All I wanna do is have some fun..." Warum nicht?
Glad that BMW makes available the Driver Assistance Pro package for the BMW X1/X2/'25 Mini Countryman! Will be excellent for long freeway drives-- Just wish the package included the hands-free Highway Assistant feature as well!
I really could see myself driving this around town, it does the trick pretty nicely - boot big enough for your shopping, aggressive and fast enough to compensate for anything you need to compensate for. But the pricing, it's so effing off! In my country of Czechia this model is 1.86 million CZK = 74.400 EUR give or take. A 6-month-old BMW X5 50e with 20-25k km on the odometer can be had for about 96.000 EUR in a configuration that initially was around 130.000 EUR. Last but not least the 50e has even better acceleration figures and overall dynamic. The X2 M35i is a nice piece of kit but it will depreciate like crazy! I think they are trying to milk the 2024 market before the new X3 drops, because there is nothing German and premium in the small SUV market on this price end. Sure, there is the new GLC, but it's also crazy expensive. Other than that, there's the old X3, super old Audis (Q3/5), and not-at-all cheap new Tiguan. The sensible thing to do would be to wait a few months and then take out private leasing on this, or wait until the new X3 drops and then pick this one up for about half the price. It's a damn shame, from all the videos out there on RUclips this seems to drive really smoothly.
It seems like they are on the right track with the M35i. This kind of dynamic setup is what people are drawn to BMW for. If you want comfort get a 28i w/out M suspension. The interior is special on these also, the ergonomics/design/quality. It's compact but not claustrophobic. They really did an excellent job with the X1/X2.
This car for me looks even better when you see it live. BMW design team deliberately does what they do to their designs and it works,cos all the negativity is only from the media but in reality the sales are the proof that their cars are unique.

In my country I hated this brand just because it attracted the worst kind of drivers and people in general, but now I hate it because of the grotesque design.
I just purchased the 28i with Sport with all the options.. In person, this vehicle is impressive inside and out. The amount of comments I am getting on this vehicle is actually insane! Definitely stands out!

@@autogefuehl in MIB 3 Pro (2021/2023 - VW infotainment system of 10 inches installed after request) you can switch the VW navs/maps (not google) from Infotainment to the cockpit! The VW navs/maps are an avantgarde system which ones connected with the satelites, scan any new area you drive in a range of 50km an shows/drives you all the details you need in the infotaimment.
Four exhaust outlets on a 4-cylinder engine; one for each cylinder? At least they now made it longer than the X1, so the X1 is once again the smallest BMW SUV, and the nomenclature once again makes sense. Does it feel nimbler than the Mini Countryman which is 5 inches shorter?
The rear spoiler and the rear seat headrests markedly reduced visibility through rear window during test drive of X2 M35i. What's your experience? Also, please comment of care of 'frozen' paint options. Thanks

Thomas - you've made some brief references to differences between the new 2025 MiniCooper Countryman JCW and the BMW X1 and X2 (m35i). I wonder if it would make sense to create a short "addendum" that is your opinion related to the strengths and weaknesses of the two models (as all are based on the same U11 platform). In other words, similar to what you did with the X1 and the X3, and which one would YOU buy?
I smell Cost cutting, Cost cutting, Cost cutting and Cost cutting. No ambience lights rear doors, no lights in glove box (!!), no iDrive controller, cheap cup holders, no open roof (only panorama) because of focusing on China market. No this is not how a BMW should be.
That's the reality of competition particularly from China and Korea. The prestige auto makers used to rely on technical innovation and performance to justify the price however all cars come with so many features that it's making it tough for premium manufacturers to compete.

Great review! I really, really don't understand the 3 cylinder engine choice there. They should bring the middle US version to the EU aswell. Why would anyone want to buy a slow BMW?

Most BMW cars produced recently have been very ugly but this one is terrible. Probably the BMW designers believe that the car looks should be inspired by the looks of German ladies.
There are many parts I like about the exterior design. But they just don't fit together. This car just looks wrong. Something is wrong with the proportions.
Thomas, why didn't you tell us how to permanently turn off that ridiculous horrible fake engine noise? When I drive, I want peace and quiet. It's a deal breaker if I can't get rid of it.
Having an M340i with the fake engine noise I can tell you, as soon as you put it in eco it disappears. Could be driving a 320i, but stick it in sport and then it boosts the noise. Either way, if you want peace and quiet you probably shouldn’t be looking at the M/M-lite models.
WOW, i thought BMW's design couldn't get worse. Yet here we are!! This is just horrid, from nearly any angle. Even the Chinese are doing much better looking stuff. Yes i said it.
I agree, I doesn’t make sense for me either. BMW should never build a car like this, but that’s their strategy internally. Trust me, I know what I’m saying. They make a lot of research in what type of design consumer wants. If the X2 looks ugly like this, it’s because people who will buy X2 want it that way I take as another example the XM. For me, the ugliest car BMW made, but you be surprised how many costumers liked it (rappers, artists, UAE costumers…) It’s sad 😢
BMW is really difficult at the moment. The design looks completely inharmonious, but also not sporty or powerful. I don't understand what kind of feeling they are trying to convey. The voice control is at a high level, but it's just annoying and uncomfortable when you have to operate everything by voice. While driving, this UI is the plague and a far cry from the premium feel suggested by the price. I have just driven the i5 M60. Incredible power (you actually need a certificate of proficiency to drive something like this - i mean it), great quality and then a glass roof that doesn't open, the cheapest hard plastic right in the door handle and this creepy operating system. There's so much light and shade here that I can't see how you can legitimize premium prices anymore. Very sad
The early 2000’s and some 2010’s were the final glory days for BMW, Quality and design wise. They are no longer the ultimate driving machine, it’s just a profit machine now

Same as with the 3 series facelift, all this gloss black trim looks super out of place, in my opinion. It basically hides the typical BMW look, especially in the front.
It's always compared to the X6, does no one like the X4? Honestly in the EU only the iX2 makes sense over the smaller ICE engines. M35i might be okay but it's still slower & larger than the last-gen model with no improvements in rear passenger space. Also looks like the ride quality is the same as last-gen, i.e., even if you have the non-M-suspension the ride is still too firm but then still too much sway, so not comfortable or sporty - stick with the hard m-sport for better stability. With the launch control i'm sure i heard/saw the front-wheels scrabble for grip, still even with xDrive it's still _too_ front-wheel biased. Very expensive item just for brand fashion.
Many of those apps you are barking about are coming from your phone as CarPlay shortcut apps. These can be disabled through the handsets CarPlay setting, so it won’t clutter up your “All apps”. If you use ID8.5/9 everyday, you realize it’s significant improved over the older ID7 interface.
Looks good, but I absolutely despise the beeping when going over the speed limit. Yes, you can turn it off, but what if at some point, they decide they will remove the ability to turn it off or even worse, alert the police or the car slowing down itself. Very dystopian.
I'm only 22 but feel like a boomer saying way to much technology for a simple means of transportation. I'm dreading when I'm 40-60 years old trying to buy a used car and they are all broken and worthless due to all the broken tech. These things are way to expensive to be throwaway appliances but that's what automakers are going for.
Minute 23 in video : every single day you encounter a driver who just turns up in front of you quickly then to drive at ultra low speed. I call them drombies (zombie drivers).
Hmm…yet again we get a car with stiff, lumpy, harsh and lurchy ride quality. WHY WHY WHY??? This obsession with Nurburgring lap times is utterly irrelevant to this sort of car. This is apparently intended for family use and day to day but we have to have the thing set up to ride like an oxcart when we need resilient, adaptive and clever suspension to absorb bumps and surface breaks to cope with todays ruined roads. Here in the U.K. we now have some of the worst roads in Europe after years of total neglect and rubbish repairs (when and if they get done). This car should be sold to cope and if it is soggy and slow around the Nordschlieffe then THANK GOODNESS…for that you need a Porsche GT3 RS Weissach…..meanwhile your eyeballs go blurred when going out to buy milk! Thomas…a good review and again, you save me money….a current BMW is not for me!😬😬😬

Agree with you - in my view it's the last pillar with the last small window. Homage to the old model, that one was also weird /bulky in that place

In my country I hated this brand just because it attracted the worst kind of drivers and people in general, but now I hate it because of the grotesque design.
I just purchased the 28i with Sport with all the options.. In person, this vehicle is impressive inside and out. The amount of comments I am getting on this vehicle is actually insane! Definitely stands out!

@@autogefuehl in MIB 3 Pro (2021/2023 - VW infotainment system of 10 inches installed after request) you can switch the VW navs/maps (not google) from Infotainment to the cockpit! The VW navs/maps are an avantgarde system which ones connected with the satelites, scan any new area you drive in a range of 50km an shows/drives you all the details you need in the infotaimment.

Thomas - you've made some brief references to differences between the new 2025 MiniCooper Countryman JCW and the BMW X1 and X2 (m35i). I wonder if it would make sense to create a short "addendum" that is your opinion related to the strengths and weaknesses of the two models (as all are based on the same U11 platform). In other words, similar to what you did with the X1 and the X3, and which one would YOU buy?

I smell Cost cutting, Cost cutting, Cost cutting and Cost cutting. No ambience lights rear doors, no lights in glove box (!!), no iDrive controller, cheap cup holders, no open roof (only panorama) because of focusing on China market. No this is not how a BMW should be.

That's the reality of competition particularly from China and Korea. The prestige auto makers used to rely on technical innovation and performance to justify the price however all cars come with so many features that it's making it tough for premium manufacturers to compete.

Most BMW cars produced recently have been very ugly but this one is terrible. Probably the BMW designers believe that the car looks should be inspired by the looks of German ladies.
There are many parts I like about the exterior design. But they just don't fit together. This car just looks wrong. Something is wrong with the proportions.

When I drive, I want peace and quiet. It's a deal breaker if I can't get rid of it.
Having an M340i with the fake engine noise I can tell you, as soon as you put it in eco it disappears. Could be driving a 320i, but stick it in sport and then it boosts the noise. Either way, if you want peace and quiet you probably shouldn’t be looking at the M/M-lite models.

They make a lot of research in what type of design consumer wants. If the X2 looks ugly like this, it’s because people who will buy X2 want it that way
I take as another example the XM. For me, the ugliest car BMW made, but you be surprised how many costumers liked it (rappers, artists, UAE costumers…)

BMW is really difficult at the moment.
The design looks completely inharmonious, but also not sporty or powerful. I don't understand what kind of feeling they are trying to convey.
The voice control is at a high level, but it's just annoying and uncomfortable when you have to operate everything by voice. While driving, this UI is the plague and a far cry from the premium feel suggested by the price.
I have just driven the i5 M60. Incredible power (you actually need a certificate of proficiency to drive something like this - i mean it), great quality and then a glass roof that doesn't open, the cheapest hard plastic right in the door handle and this creepy operating system.
There's so much light and shade here that I can't see how you can legitimize premium prices anymore. Very sad

Same as with the 3 series facelift, all this gloss black trim looks super out of place, in my opinion.
It basically hides the typical BMW look, especially in the front.
It's always compared to the X6, does no one like the X4? Honestly in the EU only the iX2 makes sense over the smaller ICE engines. M35i might be okay but it's still slower & larger than the last-gen model with no improvements in rear passenger space. Also looks like the ride quality is the same as last-gen, i.e., even if you have the non-M-suspension the ride is still too firm but then still too much sway, so not comfortable or sporty - stick with the hard m-sport for better stability. With the launch control i'm sure i heard/saw the front-wheels scrabble for grip, still even with xDrive it's still _too_ front-wheel biased. Very expensive item just for brand fashion.

Many of those apps you are barking about are coming from your phone as CarPlay shortcut apps. These can be disabled through the handsets CarPlay setting, so it won’t clutter up your “All apps”. If you use ID8.5/9 everyday, you realize it’s significant improved over the older ID7 interface.
I think this design team are plants from Audi and Porsche to increase their market shares. I’m switching.

Looks good, but I absolutely despise the beeping when going over the speed limit. Yes, you can turn it off, but what if at some point, they decide they will remove the ability to turn it off or even worse, alert the police or the car slowing down itself. Very dystopian.
I'm only 22 but feel like a boomer saying way to much technology for a simple means of transportation.
I'm dreading when I'm 40-60 years old trying to buy a used car and they are all broken and worthless due to all the broken tech.
These things are way to expensive to be throwaway appliances but that's what automakers are going for.

Minute 23 in video : every single day you encounter a driver who just turns up in front of you quickly then to drive at ultra low speed. I call them drombies (zombie drivers).
Hmm…yet again we get a car with stiff, lumpy, harsh and lurchy ride quality. WHY WHY WHY??? This obsession with Nurburgring lap times is utterly irrelevant to this sort of car. This is apparently intended for family use and day to day but we have to have the thing set up to ride like an oxcart when we need resilient, adaptive and clever suspension to absorb bumps and surface breaks to cope with todays ruined roads. Here in the U.K. we now have some of the worst roads in Europe after years of total neglect and rubbish repairs (when and if they get done). This car should be sold to cope and if it is soggy and slow around the Nordschlieffe then THANK GOODNESS…for that you need a Porsche GT3 RS Weissach…..meanwhile your eyeballs go blurred when going out to buy milk! Thomas…a good review and again, you save me money….a current BMW is not for me!😬😬😬
