This new X4 design looks stylishly beautiful and very slick, so much more better looking then the previously generation model, thank you Thomas for another great review.
This is my favourite BMW car. WIill receive my X4 2020 20d in a few days. I know, diesel and 190hp, but for me it's all I need( I'm not a fast driver), coming from a renault clio 2007, it's more than enough, for a few years. Best looking car ever, especially the 2022 facelift, WOW!
Compact SUVs are really good for us in this part of the world. I like that manufacturers are upping their specifications on them. We buy 4×4 trucks a lot in this part of the world because of our terrain and roads and for family. So compact SUVs offer premium quality as well as 4×4 capability. Also my girlfriend loves BMW, and I like the grey colour on the X trim. Good review as always
Its the best car, in terms of looks and presence. Glad its now on this highly professional channel 👌, lots of details in the review and this professional looking mike holding in hand
I think that the back of this car looks very fresh and almost like a concept car. The interior, however, looks quite outdated and boring, in my opinion.
Get the impression the suspension is too firm for the terrible surfaced UK roads, especially at slow speed in towns. As you say, good fun to see you with the X4 on the track, but slow speed (except German autobahns!) or stationary in traffic jams during road use is where it's at! Really loved the road driving part, as always. Kind regards to Katharina - hope you guys enjoy your trip to the US. Many thanks for your hard work and the great Review.
Yes Gordon, the city streets here are bad also. I recently test drove an X2 but just as Thomas said, I was surprised the ride was so uncomfortable. Then the salesman let me try the brand new X3 M-Sport with standard suspension and on the same road it was better, but still set up too hard for me.
This one and the GLC43 Coupe are complete joy! My wife has a GLC43 as a daily drive and it is super fun and practical and sophisticated thing! And given that she is a BMW fan, we are getting one of the new X4s
Thank you very much for the video, as a big BMW fan I kind of do not like it that BMW putting 4 cylinder in cars like this, I don't think it will feel very good to drive. I would go for the inline 6 patrol engine. I understand the 4 would save gas but I don't think it gives a fun feeling to drive. I mean BMW is supposed to be the Ultimate Driving Machine ...
Thanks, great review. I like the X4 M40 styling the best. (tip: next time you test drive in California, footage at 41:10, this would earn you a ticket.Should pull over)
Great review; thenk you. I am a fan of the BMW brand and really enjoyed my 520d. I do believe, however, that BMW designers need to take a look at the Peugeot 3008 SUV dashboard and design something comparable. I just find BMW dashboards to be rather dull and uninspiring. The infotainment and head up displays are excellent, though.
True they look boring, compared to what Mercedes and Audi are doing, but they are solid, fast, easy to use and just work very well... IMO that's more important.
There is no accounting for taste. I still think the X4 and X6 are among the ugliest cars BMW ever designed! While the E60 5-series has been an example that indeed needed to "grow on me", the X4 and X6 will always be ghetto pimp monstrosities to me.
thanks for great reviews ... you should place the camera on the right side of the driver's seat for less rattling and better view..attaching on the window is not a good idea ....A pillar ruins the view !!!
Maybe I’m starting to accept SUV coupes. But I think if I suddenly was to embrace the SUV, I would want the boxy shape of a Mitsubishi Outlander or something like that. The new Jimny looks really cool. Is there any news on the New Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe (I know probably not going to happen, but I have to ask), Hyundai Ionic Electric? Thanks and keep up the great work
The interior looks good ,but I'm not so much a fan of the exterior.design.I think Audi and Mercedes SUVS have a better exterior design and are more clean/ elegant outside ,but hey that's me.Still good SUV but still prefer a Q5 /GLE etc. Anyway great review Thomas, detailed and thorough as usual, keep it up!
When do you review the New Ford Focus? Very keen on getting this car, specially the ST version and would love to know you’re thoughts of it. Thank you:)
I just don't understand, and never will, the decision making behind buying one of these (x6, and equivalents). All the disadvantages of an SUV, none of the advantages. Positives? Those who want a slightly higher driving position and increased fuel consumption will love it. Nevertheless an enjoyable watch as always.
I’m ordering one this week, thanks Tomas u saved me so money. What do you think about wireless option? Also I’m looking at ex package with drivers assistance and plus. I like the colors on the grey one, what do you think about red with white interior? Thanks for talking about the “round steering wheel, it’s a must. Did you notice a difference between the standard sound system and the upgrade? 1000 bucks can buy a nice upgrade at a later date.
Cheers! So i would go for the small petrol, fabric or leatherette seats (whatever is base in ur country) analogue gauges, no m package (!), but carplay, sound system upgrade, and all assistance systems ( they can save lifes). Afaik u can get beige sensatec in the us, that d be awesome
Thank you for such a thorough review. I gave a comment and a question: 1. How is the interior view of the rear while you are driving? I found the current generation to feel very "cave" like, dark and possibly limiting the sight of the driver while navigating though heavy city traffic. And 2. While you drove the first car on the track you seemed to be gripping the steering wheel family tight and following the turn w both hands. In the video you mentioned it was more physical. Was it necessary to grip and follow the turn with such a grip? And is that what to expect on a regular driving experience off the race track? P.s. there also seemed to be a click sound - what is that? It was distracting. Thank you.
yeah it is cave alike somehow. The car has massive g forces on the racetrack, therefore holding tight =) Did you check the driving part full lenght? We also drove it on the road
Thanks, the cave effect is what's keeping me from it and it seems to continue in the new generation. I asked someone on the road today (red light) how she liked the car and rear visibility and she said it was the only issue for her but still loved the car. And yes, I saw it full length and on the streets you weren't gripping as tight. Thank you again for the review and your reply.
Kevin, we actually can take a preview at the all new 3 series tomorrow, but embargo is paris motor show in October. I ll also ask when the wagon premieres
Like you Thomas I would go with the X trim as well. Taking it to the race track mmmmm, why really, just get a sports car in my view. By the way I like the music you play on your reviews as well as positioning of the camera in the inside roof.
By the way, another great review! P.S.: when testing BMW could you point out if the car under test is equipped with VSS or not? That could help understand the steering feelings. Thanks :)
Better driving experience with a BMW. Tried Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Bmw has the best driving experience, but everyone with his taste in the end. For me mercedes has an ugly interior and exterior still looks a bit old
Hi Does anybody knows the exact color of the individual leather Elfenbeinweiss for interiors and if it matches fine with the solid White exterior for a X4 40i already ordered? I've asked to the comercial department and I'm still waiting to see a sample of it. Any comments?
We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter. At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself. In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: ruclips.net/video/LNSUzZXzpdc/видео.html List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review ruclips.net/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/видео.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf 3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette): Leather 17 kg CO2/m² PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m² Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m² Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m² So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half! 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future. More special video episodes: 1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: ruclips.net/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/видео.html 2. And another one right here: ruclips.net/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/видео.html 3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: ruclips.net/video/JipYvuDsI6s/видео.html timecode starting 27:46 4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: ruclips.net/video/OgHs239bAnE/видео.html 5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change! Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!
Too big to be cool: A monster-truck in drag... Cars don't need to be this size. They just mark out any potential owner as over-compensating for a certain shortage elsewhere.
“It’s a little bit cluttered and a lot of design” at 15:05 really????? That’s so douchey, I think that’s a very clean and where else would BMW keep the heating/air conditioning buttons it’s a nice look, I know it’s subjective but come on really?
The interior design is not clean, it contains too many elements. Of course it is always matter of preference and all has pros and cons, but it is fact that they have a lot of different elements in the styling.
Autogefühl What elements are you referring too? I’m only referring too the brushed aluminum heating/air conditioning buttons. I think it’s important that you understand that the brushed aluminum buttons was handed down from initially the new 7 Series platform, new 5 Series Platform, new X3 Series Platform, BMW has remained consistent in most of its interior brushed aluminum buttons styling cues and its placement/ergonomics. Now the interior trim piece, dashboard and iDrive screen placement is certainly consistent with that of the X3, in all I think that you really can’t change the interior (Sure you can say it’s not innovative or a game changer, however BMW really try’s to remain consistent with its interior trim and try’s not to deviate from it unless there’s a new “refresher” after having this X4 Platform out after three years). I think the new X5 definitely has more of a luxurious interior trim, especially having Swarovski Crystal for the gear shifter. Remember BMW interior trim always has been consistent and will never try to go toward Mercedes, Audi, or Lexus interior trim styling that’s what makes it a BMW. I don’t think that the interior trim is a deal breaker, considering BMW has always been the company that auto manufacturers aspire too and certainly make commercials downplaying the brand.
2 things make this car a awkward 1 .interior design the Ac vents 2.kidney grill looks too huge Other than tht car is nice nd perfect to drive power full muscular adaptive suspension are nice
The HUD is actually flickering. The camera is syncing with the flicker of the HUD and then we see the flicker. You can change the speed of flicker of your camera by changing the shutter angle. In other words, you are inferior to your camera Thomas. Don't feel bad, we still love you.
It also depends on the the speed at which you are running the camera, shutter angle and the Hz setting PAL vs NTSC. It's easier when you are not running the camera at 30fps but if you are running PAL in North America it will be difficult but there's always a place where you can eliminate it. Take it from me, I've worked in the film industry for 25 years in camera dept. ;)
The front, to much in your face. Dont know what gave BMW the idea to keep on making agressive inyourface cars. Or does everyone like that, and I'm foreign
When I look at the side view, I think they ruined it compared to the previous gen, which had a smooth, elegant curve to the roof line. I guess in order to create more rear headroom, they had to give this one a hunchback look and to me - it just looks awkward.

- xDrive30i was 33 mpg if you drive steady (7 l / 100 km)
- M40d was 38 mpg if you drive steady (6 l / 100 km)
Deduct around 5 mpg or add 1 l for a more dynamic consumption
We found those consumption figures very decent both for petrol and diesel!

As always Thomas, great review !, but the exterior design looks like a MB and the interior looks sooo old
Sebastian Serey how can bmw looks like a mb and it is mb who used BMW design
Is panoramic sunroof a standard feature on the X4 M40d for us here in Europe? I hope so.
Lumbar support should also be made standard.
No, optional
By the way, another great review! P.S.: when testing BMW could you point out if the car under test is equipped with VSS or not? That could help understand the steering feelings. Thanks :)
Thanks 🙏 This one has the dynamic set up for the steering
guys, compared to a glc coupe what do you think about x4 ? which one do you recommend ?
cheers !
Better driving experience with a BMW. Tried Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Bmw has the best driving experience, but everyone with his taste in the end. For me mercedes has an ugly interior and exterior still looks a bit old
Very nice, but it has no space for people who have a height of one ninety. a design with this concept would attract new consumers.
back light looks like 8 series back lights which is a good thing
Hubba, hubba, look at that body! Sorry Thomas, not you, the red X4 ;)
Hi
Does anybody knows the exact color of the individual leather Elfenbeinweiss for interiors and if it matches fine with the solid White exterior for a X4 40i already ordered? I've asked to the comercial department and I'm still waiting to see a sample of it. Any comments?
Hi, I would consider to not go for leather surfaces for practical, monetary and ethical reasons.
Autogefühl sorry but I deeply disagree with such kind of thinking.
Ethical reasons overpass the scope of this kind of chats...
Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production:
ruclips.net/video/LNSUzZXzpdc/видео.html
List of practical reasons against animal skin seats:
1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it)
2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling
3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating
4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa
6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review ruclips.net/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/видео.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla
7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather)
To the environmental reasons:
1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below)
2. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf
A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production”
1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small.
2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette):
Leather 17 kg CO2/m²
PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m²
Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m²
Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m²
So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half!
3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future.
More special video episodes:
1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: ruclips.net/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/видео.html
2. And another one right here: ruclips.net/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/видео.html
3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: ruclips.net/video/JipYvuDsI6s/видео.html
timecode starting 27:46
4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: ruclips.net/video/OgHs239bAnE/видео.html
5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway.
Manufacturers reactions:
We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL.
Thanks!
😲 Was that you drifting the SUV Thomas, or a stunt driver?
Both - we had some fun together on tge track :)
Great reviews Thomas. The front looks great, even it's too evolutionary and I don't like back, its looks hideous.
Thanks 🙏
Sadly the US won't get the diesel : (
Too big to be cool: A monster-truck in drag...
Cars don't need to be this size. They just mark out any potential owner as over-compensating for a certain shortage elsewhere.
Хороший отзыв МОЛОДЕЦ!!!
The interior quality of the last BMW's are amazing
The “normal” model looked better than the M model
....but is there such a car as real Sports Coupe ? I think the BMW X4 comes very near
What do you think about World Cup?
I think Germany missed out on scoring goals :D
18:37 Hashtag Thomas in the rear seat :D
Thx for the advice: 28:30 min.
Uh, no red t-shirt today !sure you expected the car to be in blue 😉
😎
역시 BMW
Please don't use the word "Sporty" when describing the chunky, blocky shoe box on wheels SUV. They are more of a concrete block that any else.
(About the X3 extra headroom in the rear) ... if you are driving with some basketball players or something. Hahaha :p
=)
I prefer the look of the new X3
I absolutely hate the matte bronze finish kidney grills of some of BMW sport trims.
WHERE IS THE NEW BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT
Talking about the whole thing with all buttons and all elements
2 things make this car a awkward
1 .interior design the Ac vents
2.kidney grill looks too huge
Other than tht car is nice nd perfect to drive power full muscular adaptive suspension are nice
Bitte noch mehr Werbung!! Sind nur 11.
The HUD is actually flickering. The camera is syncing with the flicker of the HUD and then we see the flicker. You can change the speed of flicker of your camera by changing the shutter angle. In other words, you are inferior to your camera Thomas. Don't feel bad, we still love you.
In some cases it works, in some cases even all settings wont work to cancel the flickering
It also depends on the the speed at which you are running the camera, shutter angle and the Hz setting PAL vs NTSC. It's easier when you are not running the camera at 30fps but if you are running PAL in North America it will be difficult but there's always a place where you can eliminate it. Take it from me, I've worked in the film industry for 25 years in camera dept. ;)
OMG this looks hideous compared to Audi Q8.
Excellent review as always.
Thx!
The front, to much in your face. Dont know what gave BMW the idea to keep on making agressive inyourface cars. Or does everyone like that, and I'm foreign
Alfa Romeo 146 anyone ? Especially that rear view 😉
I spy a Mrs. Thomas!
When I look at the side view, I think they ruined it compared to the previous gen, which had a smooth, elegant curve to the roof line. I guess in order to create more rear headroom, they had to give this one a hunchback look and to me - it just looks awkward.
Thomas and BMW
What else ... 😏
