I really enjoyed this series, thank you for uploading it. This conflict has always fascinated me and this series has taught me a lot, very informative. I will definitely be revisiting this.
So incredibly tragic as all wars are, however whether you’re for or against communism you can’t help but admire the north for fulfilling Ho Chi Minhs vision and unifying the country.

This is the third time I've watched the entire series. I'm definitely anti-communist, but seeing the sheer tenacity and determination of the North and the long and arduous struggle and especially the suicidal last stand of the South Vietnamese 18th Division, and the devastation and desperation upon the fall of Saigon, I can't help but get emotional. This is just raw human conflict, bravery, savagery, ideology and global power struggles that defined alot of the 20th century across the globe, which forced impossible situations on millions of people. I don't know why I'm obsessed with this series, I have no connection with this part of the world or conflict but I feel like I need to visit the battlefield of Bien Dien Phu at the very least one day. Whatever higher power you believe in, bless the people of Vietnam and the world in this strange world of 2020.

The NVA were a tenacious foe. A lesser people would have quit, but they didn't. They wanted it bad enough and got what they paid for. But I'm glad you pointed out the sacrifice of the ARVN. This documentary doesn't give nearly enough time and credit to South Vietnam's armed forces. They were pretty good all things considering. Some of their more elite units were downright warriors. The ARVN shattered the NVA during the Easter Offensive but that always gets played down for some reason. America hung South Vietnam out to dry and there's no getting around that. If we had kept advisors, a couple of combat units, and retained a few air bases like in South Korea, there would still be a South Vietnam today. If we had completely evacuated the Korean Peninsula in '53 the same thing would have happened.

It is. The only problem is that I bought PBS' DVD collection but it does not include this final episode ("The Fall of Saigon"). It ends for me around March 1972 ("Peace With Honor") and I was confused because I kept thinking, "I think this war goes on for another three years.....hmmmmm." Now that I've looked at my collection and compared it to the series episodes listed as "BATTLEFIELD VIETNAM - PBS - COMPLETE SERIES", I discovered that the good folks at NBC Universal/Timeless Media Group gave me 9/12 episodes and conveniently left out episodes 5 ("Countdown to Tet"), 6 ("The Tet Offensive") and 12 ("The Fall of Saigon"). Really frustrating.

fantom jeeze what an ignorant thing to say. These people just wanted to reunite their country which had been occupied by foreign troops for decades if not centuries. The South Vietnamese leader was a brutal dictator who even appalled the Americans with his practice of mass killings of his political opponents and opposition. And before the war even started there was supposed to be an election to decide who would be the leader of a unified Vietnam but the Americans and the South Vietnamese never held one because they knew that the overall majority of Vietnam supported the North Vietnamese. The fact that in the South Vietnamese army desertions outpaced recruitment and hundreds of thousands abandoned the army is all you need to know about what the South Vietnamese thought of their own army and government. Your comment shows how one sided and ignorant of the actual history and facts you are. You probably don’t even know what communism means, you’ve just been conditioned to automatically despise it. Maybe educate yourself huh?

fanatic determination backed by ideology and patriotism. Plus this conflict is just one of many showings why democracy cant work, especially american type in societies like was Vietnam (US made the same mistake in Iraq and Afghanistan too and they are gonna keep making them it seems, or they are doing that intentionaly these days than it was in Vietnam time...). You cant showel down the throat one of most "free" types of democracy in a society that by your arivall only knew about apsolutism and thats why they had so many corruption in South administration and military forces. When you add a top of that part where there is no clear plan about unification but everything looks more like Korean scenario you get the easy colapse of South Vietnam and in astonishing speed. And all south presidents were awfully bad, not a single strong person. South military pesonel proved to be the kind of people who waited others to win war for them (US) and you are not fight this kind of war (or majority at least) with such thaughts in your mind, this cost them dramaticaly in the end. Comunism for the time being showed it self as superior ideology to what Americans have to offer to vietnamese people especially it was clear on unification and determined at any cost to do that and ofc regular vietnamese peasnts couldnt know tricky part of communism that their protagonists are liars who are hiding behind the veil of "freedoms" in communist type of rule which actually is cover to never let loose power in country. Hope i answered somewhat to your questioning (sorry english is not my native)

Vietnamese people fought out of ideals and desire to unite country. They were proclaimed to comunist to gain support of Russia and China. Usa bassicaly just ran out and that is probably one of key reasons North Vietnam won. Usa will never admit they were beaten there. American soliders in Vietnam did not fought for ideals but because they HAD TO GO. Vietnamese WANTED TO FIGHT. No matter on deserters Usa just said .
