When I was at the end of my undergraduate degree last year, I was in the midst of writing my dissertation. I was completely obsessed with my work, focusing on nothing else from the moment I would wake up until I went to bed with only short breaks in between. I was the most driven I have ever been, but at the same time, I was also the most depressed. I genuinely believed that my dissertation would be the last contribution I ever make to the world, my final testimony, and after it was over, I would leave this world. I was in so much pain. Towards the end of writing my dissertation, I had my final meeting with my dissertation supervisor. I was insanely anxious for it, so I listened to this song for the full hour beforehand, and it really helped me feel much calmer. It really helped me focus on what was important and I went into the meeting feeling so much clearer than I had been. The meeting was supposed to be 45 minutes to just check that things were coming along well, but it ended up being close to 3 hours. My supervisor was so impressed and excited by the work I was doing that he wanted to keep discussing and even offered me an extra meeting the next day, but I really didn't pick up on any of this at the time because I was so full of self-doubt. Afterwards, I summoned all the strength I had left in me, and I finished the final section of my dissertation. I poured everything into it. Everything I had been feeling up until that point, all the pain, all the frustration, all the passion; I channeled it into my work. I was relieved because I felt I had done just enough to pass, but more importantly I was happy with what I had created. For the first time in my life, I felt genuinely proud of something I had accomplished. When the results came back, I was in complete shock. I scored 90% on the essay, I won the undergraduate essay prize at my university for that year, and my professors said it was one of the best pieces of undergraduate work they had ever seen. I completely broke down in tears reading their feedback. It gave me confidence for the first time in my life, and I had made it out the other side of the most difficult period of my life. Without the music of incredible artists like Fat Jon and Nujabes, I don't know if I ever would have made it through. Their music is so healing, so therapeutic, and I will always be grateful for the beautiful art they have created. My life is so much richer for it. This song will always remind me of that brief window of tranquility I found during one of the most stressful times in my life. Thank you so much.
