I am someone who grew up a bit of the same way you did. I was 5 when my dad first introduced me to Star Wars, through the 2004 original trilogy boxset, and later getting the complete saga blu-ray set from 2011. I grew up with the original trilogy, and it would be when I reached 10, that I would finally see the prequels. From episode 7 onwards, I saw the rest in theaters opening night. Back to the original trilogy, they are still some of my most favorite movies of all time. The story, the characters, the visuals, sound, fx, and score are all timeless in my opinion and are all iconic in their own way. It is lightning in a bottle that, like many beloved movies from the 80s and 90s, can't be recaptured or redone.
Fun video, and interesting perspectives. As for what all that was like on the first run (yup, I’m that old) well, I didn't believe Vader when he claimed to be Luke’s father. I was about 10 at the time, and just thought he was trying to trick ol Luke. But my sister, two years older and twenty years wiser, immediately accepted it. In the same post-watch conversation, she announced that Luke and Leia were sister and brother. Yes, my sister was a walking spoiler machine. How’d she know years before ROTJ was even out? At the time, she said it was obvious because of their names, because the force runs in families, and because “there is another.” I thought she was nuts. As for how it felt when Vader kills the Emperor, well, I was just so in awe of the first ever display of force lightening, I remember just feeling amazed Vader managed to kill Palatine at all. Actually, though, my favorite and strongest memory was of the first time Luke sparks up his lightsaber, all the way back in ‘77. That weapon was like nothing I had ever seen, or even imagined. I just remember being transfixed. Still am.
Awesome to hear. If there was one movie I wish I could travel back and see in theaters…well, I guess it would be all three of these, but Return of the Jedi’s story would be really interesting to see people react to for the first time.
J's Reviews, Your enthusiasm is the best part of your videos (of those I’ve watched so far) and it comes through in every minute of screen time. And yes, I’ve been so lucky to have been alive for all those firsts: Star Wars, Superman catching Lois Lane, and then the helicopter, in Superman the movie, Aliens, Terminator 2, watching the thigh muscles twitch on the first dinosaur scene in Jurassic Park, watching Spock die, seeing Trinity kick ass like no one had ever done in the first scene in the Matrix, even battling killer robots in VR in Robo Recall....it’s so often been an amazing ride. All those indelible moments and more, and I can’t wait to see what comes next! Great job on your videos; I’ll definitely keep watching.
J, absolutely do more film reviews. I got into your channel with the BTAS reviews and you give some of the best criticism I’ve seen. As somebody who loves Star Wars and superhero movies I think you should definitely keep doing them. (Which isn’t to say I don’t like the game reviews as well- hyped for Sonic Unleashed when the time comes.)
I would absolutely love to see you cover the other Star Wars films. I adore your Sonic retrospective and I very much enjoyed this Star Wars retrospective. Keep up the good work my man!
What an amazing review. I love the Star Wars franchise. I mean we’ve done vids on Star Wars. I would absolutely love to see you review the prequels, and even the sequels and mandalorian (which is truly overrated). To be completely honest I love the original trilogy, and I love the prequels. The sequels didn’t follow through like they should have, although there was a lot of potential and what I’m about to say is controversial but I didn’t like mandalorian. Too gimmicky, too many side quests that barely help with the “main story” if you can even call it that. Seems more like a Nickelodeon cartoon series in my opinion. But anyway, I hope you do more Star Wars videos. Thanks for the awesome review.
Great video essay. But Dave Prowse DID know about Vader being Luke's father. A newspaper article from 1978 reveals this. But nobody picked up on it at the time.
Ah, J’, the Leia stuff in Empire and the “there is another” line were actually building up Lucas’ plan for his sequel trilogy which would have Luke search for his long lost sister and Leia was force sensitive
Yeah, there was originally going to be a 7, 8 and 9 about that and defeating the Emperor who wouldn't have died here, plus at the beginning Lucas planned to do 12 movies but we know that didin't happen, i think people get too focused on "stories HAVE to be planned out from the beginning to be good" to appreciate that a story that is planned out at first doesn't always pan out the way the creator envisioned and it ends up being something completely different, but still makes great art through adversity. I feel this is what happened with Retrun of the Jedi. Some hate on the Sequels in principle because of the lack of planning, but they really should focus on why they think it badly affects the movies when compared to how Lucas dealt with unpredictable changes in the story, instead of denying there were any changes in the movies whatsoever, to me, the fact that it wasn't 100% planned out the way it ended up being only makes Lucas' work gain more value.
@@prometheusmodelow8322 I don’t think a trilogy has to be 100% planned but when dealing with a sequel or prequel you have to consider the continuity of what’s come before. Some of my biggest problems with the Prequel and Sequel trilogy is there over reliance on referencing the OT and completely flipping off previous installments
@@joeker5208 That i can perfectly understand, it's not about the principle of planning over making it up as you go along, it's about how you pull it off, something can be planned from the start and still be garbage, though i don't see how the Prequels contradict anything from the OT except maybe retconning some of the character's ages to be younger than what they look in the OT.
@@prometheusmodelow8322 I wouldn’t say the Prequels retcon anything from the OT, but they do heavily mimic the OT. Even George Lucas has said this as he wanted both trilogies to echo one another, but how it was executed there’s a little to much that the movies share with one another. I’m not the only one who’s pointed this out obviously as there’s the popular “Ring Theory” that show what the first two trilogy have in common
My friend, you have a great way to communicate your thoughts on what you review. If you want to make videos on stuff you care about, your time and effort will be appreciated by those who see that. Don't sell yourself short as I've watched your Sonic and Sly Cooper reviews so far. Also, it's a bit funny that I'm currently getting into Star Wars right now and you post something about Star Wars. Of course, I still have to see the rest of the movies as the only one I've actually watched fully was the Phantom Menace back when VHS tapes were a thing. Anyways, keep up the great work!
Great video, J. You hit the nail on the head when discussing the original trilogy. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the Prequel and Sequel trilogies in the future.
I would like to see movie’s reviews being something you would also do on your channel. After watching your BTAS videos, Your superhero movie reviews and this one. I think you have some interesting thoughts to share and I really appreciate that you talked more about the series as a whole than just the movies themselves. A bit of what was going on behind the scenes and how it was for some of the cast members, some comparisons to later releases and how big of a impact Star Wars really was. Of course I still enjoy your gaming videos but I wouldn’t mind seeing this type of content too.
The Return of the Jedi was the first Star Wars film I watch. Eventually I watch New Hope then Empire Strikes Back. I have to admit though, it took me awhile to like ESB. Probably because it was a bit darker, the rebel lost the battle of Hoth and didn't like that Han was not save at the end. The film made me feel miserable. Of course I was a kid at the time. As an adult re-watching it, I love it and consider it the best of the trilogy.
Return of The Jedi has always been my favourite Star Wars movie, I always liked how everything came full circle. Just hate the fucking Hayden Christensen ghost.
I remember when Star Wars was cinema instead of a universe. That’s when it was great back in the 80s before I was even born. Now with the Mandalorian they’ve finally made me care again and they are telling a great story. The second half of BOBF also is great but not because of Boba Fett funnily enough
If Solo did anything its give me the head canon Lando calls Han Haan as a way of mocking him and he's been doing it for so long its natural even when being strangled by a wookie
And then everyone else joins in on it because they don’t know the context and just assume that they’ve been mispronouncing his name the entire time and that he couldn’t be bothered to correct them.
Now this is a video I had been looking forward too. I am a massive Star Wars Fan and the Original Star Wars Trilogy is my favourite movie trilogy. I’m interested to hearing your thoughts on the Prequels and Sequels when you get round to them.
Luke has blown up the Death Star, became a Jedi master, defeated the Rancor, and redeemed a powerful Sith lord. But there's one spectacular feat that Luke can never accomplish successfully. Luke cannot gargle Gershwin!
I’ve always been used to the original Star Wars Trilogy as Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. I was never a fan of various things of the special editions like many other people weren’t. With watching the Star Wars Saga I mainly prefer just watching the first three movies and in their original theatrical versions. Also after watching the first season of The Book of Boba Fett I found it just as interesting as The Mandalorian.
I really do hope that you do super hero movies part 4 I just find your perspective on them to be so unique not seeing them as a fan of comics or seeing them as a critic, you see them in a way of how they were talking about the time period they were released and brining behind the scenes info to life and making me and I’m assuming others to learn about these details. Also cause you are just a very entertaining RUclipsr
i kinda wish you did more animated superhero stuff. thats definitly what drew me to you channel above anything else. maybe cover all the spiderman series?
This era of Star Wars cannot be topped especially from the creative mind of George Lucas as well as the easy to follow story memorable characters and amazing set pieces. Hell my favorite lightsaber battle is the one on Cloud City as it shows Luke getting his ass handed to him as he ignored Yoda’s warning
I always though when Yoda told Obi-Wan there was another hope for the galaxy I thought he was still talking about Vader. I thought he was discussing the possibility abakin could still redeem himself foreshadowing the scene from return of the jedi.
Did you know that Return of the Jeid’s original name was supposed to be “Revenge of the Jedi”? A member of the staff mentioned that Jedi do not seek revenge, so Lucas changed it to “Return of the Jedi.”
I'd love a retrospective on the prequel trilogy, it may not be the best trilogy as a whole, but it picked up near the end. I'm also patiently waiting on that Sonic Unleashed Review
I just wanted to mention the amazing fan edits "Star Wars Revisited" by Adywan, which are my personal definitive versions of Ep. IV and V (VI currently being worked on), which enhances and updates the visuals and special effects. The number of edits made and the effort put into them is beyond anything I've ever even heard of from a "fan-edit", complete colour correction, rebuilding sound mixes, re-rotoscoping lazer blasts and lightsabers (including the janky dated lightsaber edits, ie. lightsabers activating/retracting), and so many, many more! Completely redoing the entrance of the Hoth Base is amazing in itself! I can't stress enough how much I recommend this version if you're not a "de-special purist", it's the Special Editions we honestly should have gotten, and I can't wait for the Revisited Edition of Return of the Jedi.
Dispite everything that had happened,Star Wars is still alive because of this and it shows how no matter what happens, these movies impact on culture will never be forgotten because they are all that good

The originals were definitely the “golden age” of Star Wars. Their quality, storytelling, imagination, music, and characters is so unbeaten 🔥 I believe the quality of Star Wars dipped beginning with the Special Editions or the prequels, and then totally died with the sequels

This was very fun to watch. With how divisive and dissapointing Star Wars has become after the Disney buyout, it's nice to remember why people care so much about this series to begin with. I was never the most hardcore SW-fan, but I always thought it was something special. And I think it still is, at least if you go back to the source. This made my day a little brighter. :)

J's Reviews,
Your enthusiasm is the best part of your videos (of those I’ve watched so far) and it comes through in every minute of screen time.
I think all 12 movies are pretty fun and exciting in their own way
Awesome video man! I absolutely love the original trilogy! It was a very big part of me growing up.
One of my favorite reviewers makes a video on Star Wars! Hell yeah! Today just got even better!
I definitely enjoyed this video! I didn't enjoy either the prequel or sequel trilogies of Star Wars, but I would enjoy you talking about them.
Anyways, keep up the great work!
this is the best analysis on all three of these film's outthere period that i know of
This was a fantastic analysis! I have a soft spot for the prequels, so I’d love to see you do a similar retrospective on those!
Star Wars is a huge part of my life. I love the first six movies, the shows, video games, comics and novels.
Yay a J review today ☕
The Return of the Jedi was the first Star Wars film I watch. Eventually I watch New Hope then Empire Strikes Back. I have to admit though, it took me awhile to like ESB. Probably because it was a bit darker, the rebel lost the battle of Hoth and didn't like that Han was not save at the end. The film made me feel miserable. Of course I was a kid at the time. As an adult re-watching it, I love it and consider it the best of the trilogy.
They added the New Anakin because it's symbolism in revenge of the Sith of Anakin dying and Vader being born
Empire is my favorite movie and I felt so good to see it in theaters back In October with my dad
I went here after the TMNT retrospective and tbh I've enjoyed the video. Wish you would cover other SW films as well.
Now this is a video I had been looking forward too. I am a massive Star Wars Fan and the Original Star Wars Trilogy is my favourite movie trilogy. I’m interested to hearing your thoughts on the Prequels and Sequels when you get round to them.
I would love to see a video like this for the other trilogies
Luke has blown up the Death Star, became a Jedi master, defeated the Rancor, and redeemed a powerful Sith lord. But there's one spectacular feat that Luke can never accomplish successfully.
Luke cannot gargle Gershwin!
Some of my favorite movies of all time.
There were points that I didn't agree with, but I still strongly encourage continuing this series as well as the superhero one. Great video.
I grew up with the original trilogy in the 2000s they are so good it’s my favourite film series of all time
I’ve always been used to the original Star Wars Trilogy as Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
I would be interested in a Prequel Star Wars video to be honest.
i kinda wish you did more animated superhero stuff. thats definitly what drew me to you channel above anything else. maybe cover all the spiderman series?
This era of Star Wars cannot be topped especially from the creative mind of George Lucas as well as the easy to follow story memorable characters and amazing set pieces. Hell my favorite lightsaber battle is the one on Cloud City as it shows Luke getting his ass handed to him as he ignored Yoda’s warning
What a pleasant surprise, im down for more Star Wars videos in the future.
First saw Star Wars in 1996 at age 5. First toy I ever bought in a store was the Hasbro/Kenner Vader. Now age 32, it’s always been there for me
I like return of the Jedi but never really got into Star Wars
I love seeing these movie reviews on your channel and I hope you keep them up
I always though when Yoda told Obi-Wan there was another hope for the galaxy I thought he was still talking about Vader. I thought he was discussing the possibility abakin could still redeem himself foreshadowing the scene from return of the jedi.
Also I would definitely love to see you cover more Star Wars in the future! Keep up the great work.
More on my favorite franchise from one of my favorite RUclipsrs? Yes, please!
I loved this video and all the videos on movies you've done so far. Please don't stop reviews movies.
Wow! Never expected to see this being a thing but overall... A pretty nice change of pace.
Did you know that Return of the Jeid’s original name was supposed to be “Revenge of the Jedi”? A member of the staff mentioned that Jedi do not seek revenge, so Lucas changed it to “Return of the Jedi.”
I thought George Lucas himself said that? That's what The Star Wars Archives says anyways.
I enjoyed this a lot. I'd love to see videos about the prequel and sequel trilogies.
The OG Star Wars Trilogy is a masterpiece and Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie and I don't care about it's flaws.
Been binging your videos. Definitely see you blowing up.
Cool video, can't wait for prequel vid.
I'm actually waiting for those DC animated series reviews to come back. Teen Titans, Static Shock, etc. I enjoyed those.
What Special Edition changes do you think are good?
We’ve had a billion takes on the Prequel and Sequel trilogies but I’d still be curious to hear your thoughts on them!
Dispite everything that had happened,Star Wars is still alive because of this and it shows how no matter what happens, these movies impact on culture will never be forgotten because they are all that good

Nice analysis on the topic.
I had notifications on and i found this 3 hours later and i only found it because i went to my home page and saw it there. gotta love youtube,
Empire has the best soundtrack of any movie ever. It hits all the right thematic notes and it’s amazing.
It's okay J. You will get better at movies with a simple sentence to keep in mind
"Everyone grows through experience"
The originals were definitely the “golden age” of Star Wars. Their quality, storytelling, imagination, music, and characters is so unbeaten 🔥
I believe the quality of Star Wars dipped beginning with the Special Editions or the prequels, and then totally died with the sequels
you should do The Karate Kid it's one of the greatest movies of all time and i think you could have a really interesting view on it. i could help you if u really wanted lol I've watched that movie hundreds of times
Would love to see another star wars video if you ever get around to it. Would love to see you talk about the prequels and sequels.
I guess I never considered as a kid that Vader kills EVERYONE who fails him, not until Thrawn pointed it out in Heir to the Empire (which gave me respect for the Grand Admiral)
LOVE YOU BRO YOU MAKE WICKED CONTENT
This was very fun to watch. With how divisive and dissapointing Star Wars has become after the Disney buyout, it's nice to remember why people care so much about this series to begin with. I was never the most hardcore SW-fan, but I always thought it was something special. And I think it still is, at least if you go back to the source. This made my day a little brighter. :)
