- 3 Lenses I REGRET not buying SOONER! Fujicrons. These small standard f2 prime lenses have changed the way I look at Fujifilm equipment.Do I regret not buying these lenses sooner, you bet! Initially I thought they were kind of cheap looking but decided to buy the Fuji 23 f2 first. It reminded me of my Leica 35 Summicron which i was hoping to emulate to some extent. I was blown away by what I could do with this lens. Paired with the Fuji X-T30 its a wonderful small package and i love it. So I began to think about how the Fuji 35 f2 would be. It's about the same size and exactly the same build quality. So I was able to find one used for a great price and again I was blown away by the quality of the lens. Small, light, and dam sharp even wide open!. So you can guess what I started thinking next. Well if the Fuji 23 f2 and Fuji 35 f2 are that nice I bet the Fuji 50 f2 is great too. I was not wrong as I again found a great used copy.

Fuji makes fine lenses. The first three I purchased for my Fuji X body were (listed in order of purchase):
23mm f/1.4
56mm f/1.2
16mm f/1.4
35mm f2 was my favourite Fujifilm lens. When I travel, I used to have just 16-80 f4 and 35mm f2. And 35mm f2 was my the most used lens when I was shooting just for myself or went outside to take some pictures. Great little lens!
It is a great little lens but I'm not a 50mm shooter. Yes I need to use it more.
Would love to see what you think of the little 27mm lens. Love your voiceover narration, it's very soothing
I own all three of the 'Fujicrons' along with an XT3. Honestly, this is all I need. Perfect balance of size, price, performance.
You can do very well with that kit!
I purchased a used XT20 with a 23 f2 and fell in love with Fuji. I've since upgraded to an XT4 and a few other lenses but the 23mm just feels so right that it pretty stays on my camera.
Same here! I love to use the "Crons" on my X-T30 love them with that small camera.
I came to Fujifilm from full frame Nikon DSLRs, but to make the transition I had to know that I was not compromising quality.
The 35mm f/2 Fujicron was the lens that on my first outing let me know that I could leave my bulky, heavy Nikon at home and just use my (then) X-T2 with the tiny f/2 lens and come back with first class images.
Today, I own all the Fujicrons plus their faster equivalent lenses which gives me options when the light is low or I need selective focus that only an f/one-point-something aperture can give on APS-C, but a person could be very productive with only those tiny Fujicrons.
Albert - I love using that lens on my X-T30.
I have anXT100V(23mm) and XT5 with a 14 f2.8 and 50 mm f2.0 as my main "Street Kit" and I'm very happy with that combo. I occasionally leave the XT100V and the 14mm and take the XT 5 with the 50 mm and the 10-24mm,also a great kit.
Nice kit!
Wow, those lenses are amazing value for the quality they offer. I'm curious, what f/stop is the photo of the sticks/rocks at 6:58 ? Love your easy-going style of presentation and your images remind me to "keep it simple."
Many thanks! The shot of the lobster buoys sitting on the granite blocks was at ISO 250 1/640s @ f8.
Got the 23 f2 and 16 f2.8 are very good lenses, also have the 35 1.4 so have not gone for the 35 f2. Been thinking of getting the 50 for a while. Love your videos
Many thanks Mike! The 23 is my favorite. I'm always looking for a deal on the old 23 1.4. When I borrowed it from Fuji I loved the look.
I have the 23 and I just got the 50 I love them both. I'm not really a lens guy (I kinda feel like all modern lenses are good at this point) but these lenses are fantastic on my x pro. Nice vid.
I’ve been dying for an X-pro2 ever since I used the xpro3 for a little bit and tried an xpro2. Can’t find one anywhere here in the US. Thanks!
Love the 23,35 & 50 f/2 lenses. Lightweight, affordable, & they produce excellent quality images. The 50mm f/2 is my favourite. Fuji offers numerous choices in their well rounded lens lineup. Love your channel, Kirk.😊
Thanks Jeffrey! I love shooting with the Fujicrons.
I own the 23f2 and love it. At the time bought it together with the 35f2 but sold the last one. Found them too much close on focal range and sometimes find myself in doubt of which one I should use. Kept the 23 because seems more versatile. Love the color of you imagens. Any film simulation or just editing if may I ask. Congrats for the channel, regards from Portugal
I use my 23 a lot as well.
Really informative video Kurt. I have the 23/2 and love it. It is such a sharp little lens at one of my favourite focal lengths. The other 2 are looking like making on my to buy list. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Cheers, Sean.
A great set of lenses.
Great stuff! I also have the 23 and the 35, and the 56 f1.2 instead of the 50 f2. 56 is a bit bulky but excellent lens. I end up using the 23mm the most and the 35 the least.
I have all three of those ‘fujichrons’ in my growing collection of Fuji glass...just added the 30mm Macro over a month ago. I never tire if these lenses, all very well used and have more than paid for themselves over the years.
I feel the same way. I have stayed away from certain lenses because of size weight and cost but other than that they are just beautiful.
Good review and images. I love he 'Crons' and include within the definition the 16/f2.8. I have that lens and the 23/f2 and the 50/2. I only want to carry three lenses with my XE4 so reckon I can crop images taken with the 23/f2 if I need to, but there are times I want to go wider than 23, hence the 16. These three lenses serve me well for city breaks, and we have our next city visit booked to Vienna (Christmas markets in Dec 23) and I will take these three. Thanks.
Jules great choice for that camera. Good luck in Vienna.
I have all these three lens. But the most time I use 18mm F2.8. It is pancake lens which is just a slice bigger than 27mm/F2.8.
I’m just not a big fan of 18 or 27. For me I mostly use the 23 either f2 or 1.4
I love your lens reviews. My favourites are the newer 33mm f1.4 and 23 f1.4. I still use the beautiful 16-55mm, but the lighter weight and optical perfection of the newer lenses make them a joy to use. I’m an amateur, albeit for 50 or so years of photography in PNG, where I lived for some time, the UK and Europe, where I also lived for some time, travelling around the world (including parts of the USA) and Australia where I live and came from originally. Here in Oz the natural light can be powerful or dull, according to season and time of day. The sky is bluer than many other places and the landscapes are spectacularly beautiful, so much to enjoy. I love seeing your world and your photographic work in beautiful photographs, and also admire your experience and creative talents. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and photographs. Always enjoyed.
Thanks Greg very much appreciated!
I haven't used the last two but the 23F2 is a superb lens. Cracking shots off all 3 Kirk.
This week I’m comparing the 23 f2 to the 23 f1.4R and if the 23f2 resolves 40mp better than the 23 f1.4R.
If you ever wanted to try longer on the zoom range, can you recommend the 90 mil F2 incredibly sharp lens lovely linear motor and great for compression anyway thank you for your reviews Really quick to see what people think of their lenses
Check out my video on 3 prime lenses that are my favorites. The 90 is in there.
I do think the 23, 35, and 50mm f/2 are "sleeper" lenses that many people would enjoy! They work great on my XPro3 due to their small size. I also like using them on my XH-1. I may be repeating myself from other postings, but recently the XPro3 and the 23mm f/2 made for a great combo as I toured Minneapolis. In fact a friendly Canon user want to know what the heck I was shooting with! ;)
Bill - Yes I loved using that combo when I borrowed the X-Pro 3 from Fuji. I want a X-Pro body in the worst way. An X-Pro 2 would be great because of the magnification when manual focusing. But you just can't find any.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Yes, I do miss my previous XPro2 that allowed for more OVF versatility over my XPro3. I wonder why Fujifilm did that?
Hopefully fuji will release 23f2 v2 soon, I'll definitely add that to my collection.
Right now I don’t see that happening. Fuji is in a funk. You can’t buy any of the older model cameras they are all on back order or out of stock. Sad really. They are slowing production for some reason.
Hi Kirk! 23mm on my wish list for quite some time! Great video! Cheers
No time like the present! Lol
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Indeed!
I sold my 50mm f/2 for the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. I regret it and months later I bought it again. That lens holds a special place because it was my first Fuji prime and the size, build and image quality are so good. The 50mm has incredible micro contrast and works very well with the macro rings!
I should try a macro ring with it. Great idea.
With those lenses and slotted hoods keep an eye out for the upcoming X-Pro 4!
You mean X-Pro 4
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Yup, sorry. Fixed!
love the f2's too
Great video 👌 I started off with owning all the f2 Fuji crons and sold them all for the new f1.4 and f1.2 primes thinking that they would have better quality but now I regret selling the crons
I love the three but I really want to find an old 23 1.4 for the bokeh only. The new lenses are very clinical almost to a fault. I love shooting with these little primes.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I don’t think the new lenses are clinical and to my exits the new camera sensors that produce that clinical flat look just like Sony cameras do. I have an xt2 and xh1 and compared to my xh2 xt4 and xt5 they produce more cinematic images
That 50mm is a killer lens!
I have the 35 f2 and 50 f2 and I love them both. The 35 f2 was my first lens with the fuji system. I've thought about the 23 f2, but I love my 23 f1.4 too much.
Josh - At this point I have decided I’m not dropping any more money on Fuji gear so the 23 1.4 R I was thinking of is off the table. Ugggh
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography It's a beautiful lens, but I agree. Fuji gear has gotten crazy expensive and hard to find these days.
interested to see a 50 lux vs xf50/2 comparison. thanks
The problem with that comparison is that I would be shooting the Lux on a Fuji body which only takes the center of the lens since it's a full frame lens. I don't have a 35 1.4 for the Fuji.
What do you think about 16mm 2.8?...must to be on the bag?
Diego - It’s a great small, light, fast focusing prime. You can’t go wrong with it. I have my 16 f1.4 and don’t need another 24mm full frame equivalent. I use this lens mostly for work and not for daily shooting.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography thanks for your answer
I started out with a Fuji Xt-5 and a 16-80 lens. I love the combination. I did get the 23 and just got the 50 f2. Incredible lens. I am not a fan of the 50mm angle of view. I'd rather use a 35mm (23mm), Like your vids!
Im with you on this but I force myself to pull it out and shoot with it as I feel my compositions improve overall.
Sold all my gear to get the x100v, but just couldn't part with the 35 f2. So I've for no camera to put it on now.
Just pack it away u til you can find a used camera for it.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography That's the plan, I'm after an xpro 1.
Those slotted lens hoods really do work well on my X-Pro2! Like a Leica, indeed!🙃
Melvin - I borrowed Bill Fortney's X-Pro 2 for an afternoon and used the 23 f2 on it and loved every minute of it. It felt pretty close to using my Leica with the slotted lens hood.
For me it was the 16mm f1.4 I actually just don’t feel good with 23mm f2. My top lenses 16mm f1.4, 10-24mm, 35mm f2 and the underrated 18-135mm.
The 16 1.4 is a beautiful lens! I love mine.
Cool vid!
Thanks - Love these three lenses.
I like things a little wider Ie 16mm f1.4 as never really found myself shooting at classic 35mm equivalent Anyway, I try the Sigma contemporary And have to say has been good value for money and a decent enough lens / I won the 56 mil 1.2 instead of the 50 mil F2 to be honest. Overall, I think the 50 with less weight and better auto focus
I like my 50 f2 because it’s smaller, lighter, and focuses faster than the older 56 1.2.
For its the 16, 23 and 35. The 16 is my most used lens followed by the 23mm. The 35mm is too tight for my style. I hardly ever use it.
In my full time photojournalism days I used the 24mm lens all the time. It was basically glued on a Canon F1 body. Now I find myself using the 23 (35) more for the type of shooting I do.
I used to have 35 f2 and I loved it, but ... I lost it to the river 😢. I now have 33 f1.4, and it's a really great lens although more expensive and bigger. Oh, well... What is not more expensive these days!?
Svetlana - Sorry you lost the 35 in a river. But now you have a superb lens that will last forever. It better last forever it cost enough.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I know ☺️
The Fujicrons are fantastic, the problem is its hard to justify buying the 'main' 1.4 versions when there is only a stop difference and often worse AF (or at least used to be). I won't be buying a 23/1.4 or 33/1.4 till they make them faster. Owning the 50/1 and the 50/2 for example makes a lot of sense, one is a no holds barred portrait lens, the other is the compact all rounder. How I wish Fuji pushed the envelope a little on the newer updated 23 and 33 and made them f1.2 or f1.0's.
Eddy I agree. Although the old slow 23 and 35 1.4's have a nice different look to them that is hard to beat. The newer ones are to clinically sharp for me. I totally agree on the 50 f1 and 50 f2. What a great way to put it.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography It just feels like Fuji is in a unique situation with the APS-C sensor that they are not quite fully capitalizing on. How many other brands could sell two primes of the same focal length to one buyer? Namely a tiny, compact, travel, excellent AF and decently fast prime (the Fujicrons), whilst simultaneously selling a super fast (but gigantic) prime that's intent is on deliberate, slower controlled work (portrait shoots etc) where clawing back some of that FF look (and of course useful for event work/low light). I can't help shake the feeling that selling f1.4 lenses is right in the middle of these extremes and nerfs the potential for owners to own two of the extremes. Someone with a 1.4 isn't going to bother with a f2 or a f1.2/f1.0 variant (should it exist), it harms sales I think and is the safe 'lazy' lens approach from Fuji. Perhaps there is room for all the lenses to exist (f2, 1.4 and 1.2/1.0) and let the customer choose which ones they want...
35 F2 lens is always sharp, just bought it AGAIN 😝
It’s a great lens.
I'm reluctant to even think on getting 50/2, course I have (too many) vintage options, and a 56/&1.2 on top of that.
I did borrow the 35/2 one time, and I wasn't happy with it; it appeared too flat to me, no separation at all. If I use 35mm lens on an APSc camera, it's gotta be at least f1.4. Course I do use that focal length quite sparingly.
However I'd like to try 23/2 out, mainly course I've contemplated on getting the X100V, but you know the drill with that camera...
All of these f2 Fujicrons have the same separation of f2.8 lenses because of the aps-c format. It depends on how close you are to the subject of the photograph.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Yp I know but it wasn't good enough for me; 3-4m apart from the subject it looked already as it would with the aperture closed down...
If you are new at Fuji and want to do street photography - just buy them! Don't overthink it. They are everything you need.
I agree! But they can be used for so much more than street photography.
I have all three also. They are incredibly. I have a small bag that can take one body and all three together. My wife calls it my man purse.
Yes just walking around with a small bag with one camera and three lenses is great.
Sorry to say I don't have any of them. That's what comes of getting side tracked by vintage lenses. 😏
Neville - You can find a really good used price on all of them. I love my 23 and 35 the 50 I have to get used to.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Good point Kirk. I shall have to look into that.
You lost me in the first 2 min. If you own a Leica, why are you using any other camera?
I’m a photojournalist. The Leica is my legacy system I use for fun. For the work I do for our daily paper the Leica is not the camera of choice. I learned 45 years ago you can’t shoot sports CD with an M.
