  • Brinzer is a high school senior on his way to winning the 1989 junior nationals in both freestyle and greco. The vid has no sound, except for a comical interview at the end, where they ask Ray about the infamous Gumby doll he would set up on the edge of the mat to be his corner man.

Oh, wow, I never thought I'd see this again. This was actually my junior year.
Robby Hadden was really good. I'd pinned him on a trick earlier in the tournament. This was in the era where you couldn't score with two gut wrenches in a row. I scored with one gut, and started to load a second; he relaxed, thinking that I was wasting my effort, and halfway through I went into a high bridge and held him for the fall. He still made it to the finals because of cross-bracketing, though, and it was a way tougher match.
Nice seeing Ed Onorato in my corner, too; he passed away several years ago. Ed was a close friend and teammate of my father's.

It was a gumby doll. Had it forever. Gable made him put it in a paper bag in college.

This might be 1989. In 1990 the finals were on a raised platform and he wrestled Les Gutches of Oregon. I won it that year
