WRESTLING: KEVIN JACKSON vs SOVIET
Просмотров 5 тыс.10 месяцев назад
This match is from a 1989 USA vs Russia dual meet held in Eugene, OR. Kevin Jackson is wrestling Elmadi Zhabrailov who won gold at the 1989 World Championships a few months earlier (defeating American Melvin Douglas in the finals). Jackson had not yet made an American World Team so on paper the Soviet wrestler should be a massive favorite. KJ shows what an absolute stud he is, something that wi...
Dave Schultz battles a jacked Russian

20 year old Dave Schultz battles a tough Russian at the 1980 World Cup in Toronto. This footage was shot by the legendary wrestling videographer Don Ernst, who gave it to me while I was making the film Team Foxcatcher (Netflix). Listening to Don's commentary from behind the camera makes this match all the more thrilling. There's an absolutely epic Dave Schultz story that accompanies this match,...

Brinzer is a high school senior on his way to winning the 1989 junior nationals in both freestyle and greco. The vid has no sound, except for a comical interview at the end, where they ask Ray about the infamous Gumby doll he would set up on the edge of the mat to be his corner man.
Schultz (USA) vs Jelev (BUL)

This is Dave Schultz at the 1993 World Championships, where he eventually won a silver medal. He's 34 years old here, and, already a wily veteran. At the end of the match you can see the Turkish fans getting very upset with Dave for what they see as underhanded tactics (the event was in Toronto). Turkish animosity for the Schultz brothers dates back to the 1984 Olympics, where Mark Schultz brok...
Jordanov vs Toguzov

The 1989 52 KG World Championship Final is an example of what made 8X World Champ Valentin Jordanov so special. Valo employs his trademark supernatural strength and flawless technique to dominate a talented young Soviet. There are some moves and positions in this match that don't even make sense. And all of them end up with Jordanov getting the better of the exchange. Valo is a wrestler that sh...
Bill Scherr vs Leri Khabelov

The Scherr brothers were the unsung heroes of the great American Wrestling teams during the late 80's and early 90's. They've won 7 World medals between them, including a World gold that Bill Won in Budapest in 1985. We hear a lot about the Schultz brothers, the Smiths, and the Brands, but Bill and Jim Scherr were just as important to the development of American wrestling as any of them, and pe...

Zeke Jones has an absolute brawl with 8X World Champion Valentin Jordanov of Bulgaria. Although the two men wrestled many times I believe this was Zeke's only win. At one point a few of the Bulgarians break through the barriers out onto the mat and a brief scuffle occurs with US coach and wrestling Icon Bobby...

I never knew any of these guys and didn't wrestle (big regret). But I love the sport, support both PSU wresting and USA wrestling, and can't get enough of the American greats like Dave and Mark Shultz. Dave put on a master class in technique and leverage in this one. I wonder what was going on in the Russian's head as he was getting flipped like a burger toward the end. Nyet!

Oh, wow, I never thought I'd see this again. This was actually my junior year. Robby Hadden was really good. I'd pinned him on a trick earlier in the tournament. This was in the era where you couldn't score with two gut wrenches in a row. I scored with one gut, and started to load a second; he relaxed, thinking that I was wasting my effort, and halfway through I went into a high bridge and held him for the fall. He still made it to the finals because of cross-bracketing, though, and it was a way tougher match. Nice seeing Ed Onorato in my corner, too; he passed away several years ago. Ed was a close friend and teammate of my father's.

I remember attending a college dual match between Iowa and Oklahoma. Iowa was the best at the time, but OU was very good as well. The match ended 19-19 and was as exciting as any sporting event I saw that year. The highlight was when Mark Schultz came from behind to beat Ed Banach in the final seconds of their match. I don't remember Dave's match as well, he was so clinical. We never expected him to lose. There were 4 Olympic champions in that match with the Schultz and Banach brothers. I need to find a write up of that match to see how good my memory is.
