      I’ve floated to the NICU and it’s different from a adult on a vent. It’s not uncommon for a premature baby to suddenly stop breathing due to prematurity and unfortunately for parents to move and hold them in a way that cuts off oxygen. I would have explained it the first time, but the second time she would have been escorted off the unit and I would have filed a report and I would have gladly explained to CPS what she had done. In years of nursing I’ve never seen a parent due this.

    • @sparkzyfulton5774
      @sparkzyfulton5774 10 дней назад +13

      Yeah. I cant imagine... I know it's only the meter not actually the child's oxygen itself so it for most part perfectly safe for child. There's obviously the small chance somthing does change bad on the child while it's unplugged and now doctors can't know probably what and when it actually changed. It's more the fact that you don't want it on as much as possible just in case and to purposely do it for a stupid reason. Like I do know that as a first time mommy expesally of a child who's so tiny and sick on top it can be nerve wrecking to get up woth the baby. Your afraid you might accidentally hurt the baby or something... but seriously how starving can you be? You either learn to get up with the child slowly and carefully like you eventually gotta learn anyway or you freaking wait for a nurse. In nicu there will be a nurse coming around atleast every hour eitherway even more often when a parent is in the room is the ussual standard. Heck mist nicu rooms don't even give you opportunity to be alone with your child at all because how sensitive small babies are and knowing moms can panic or have problems already expesally with a sick child... the one my son was it all children were together and you sat down inside that room with one nurse constantly in room with the multiple children at all times and more in room next door with glass walls. Could not get privacy even if breastfeeding. Like seriously my hubby come in to see our son and another child was eating 2 feet away off momma and when I fed my son people were in and out. Only thing that would happen is if anyone did act creepy or stare at any of us moms who were feeding in a uncomfortable way they were no longer allowed to vist any time and had to wait for times no one was feeding and when there's 20 kids somone is likely eating at most all points.... get up or wait isn't that difficult. The child might starve if it doesn't eat within a few hours but momma should be able to go days without food atleast once without any health issues for most part... if diabetic or something yeah maybe you need something but you should have candy bars or something in your bag at all times if diabetic anyway. I seriously never met a person who had issues that caused them to not be able to easily wait a bit to eat not have a big purse or diaper bag filled with snacks. So I don't believe that was problem here.

      Editing to add' I'm never annoyed by patients using their call bells for legit needs, and I'll go out of my way to make them as comfy and calm as I can. I also don't mind doing things for family members if I'm not swamped. They're usually stressed and didn't expect to have a loved one in the hospital. A person like this, though?? I'd get her a sandwich just to keep the baby safe, tell her never to unplug anything, and then go call social services to report her. Most NICU parents are so scared and freaked out and feel helpless because they can't help their little one. This lady isn't right.

    I had my first child 2 weeks early. His heart stopped during my labor and I was in a panic, waiting until I heard it again. He stayed in the NICU for a few days due to his oxygen being low. I never once asked for anything extra from the nurses. I was grateful he was even alive, I'd never have done something idiotic like pull any of the plugs. My second child had severe jaundice and they kept us for four days. She was still jaundice when were allowed to go home and I had to take her daily to the hospital to have her bilirubin levels checked. Didn't matter that I had just given birth to her, I got into my car and drove her to every appointment until she was cleared. It impacted my healing but I didn't care. This woman would never bother to do any of that. All children deserve parents but not all parents deserve children and this is a prime example of that.

    19yrs ago years ago my baby was born and taken to the NICU where he stayed for a month. I was so sick that I couldn’t even see him for 3 days. Afterwards he remained in the NICU as they waited for him to develop certain essential milestones, like the ability to “suck, swallow, and breathe”. The nurses repeatedly called him “the healthiest baby in the NICU” but I had seen bigger, seemingly more healthy, babies suddenly crash in front of me and never return to that spot in the NICU. I had listened to other mothers talk about how they had lost their babies. I spent that entire month completely terrified and completely unable to think about my own my own recovery because I was was entirely consumed with terror that at any moment he might develop a complication or an infection and die. He is alive, healthy, and prospering right now. However, TO THIS DAY I am still racked with trauma and (completely misplaced) guilt over the fact that I developed severe pre-eclampsia. I CANNOT FATHOM HOW THIS WOMAN COULD BEHAVE THIS WAY!

    As someone who has WORKED IN AN EMERGENCY ROOM don't unplug anything or take anything off that you're not supposed to. The pulse/ox is to monitor a patients' pulse/HR and Oxygen intake. If under 90% can lead to what Danky said, low oxygen. Weather it's for monitoring or not. That's what the CALL LIGHT is for.
    Also, using that of all things to get the attention of staff FOR A TURKEY SANDWHICH??? A few slices of bread and turkey. No condiments nothing. As a tech I used my call lights to determine what tasks to do first. If s babies O2 is dropping or isn't read... You're dropping everything you're doing to help the emergent thing. I'd be livid as the nurse too.

    As a retired nurse I’m so furious. There is so much I could say, but her behaviour is reprehensible on so many levels 🤬🤬🤬 I think you said it all, but more politely than I would. The selfishness and sense of entitlement is off the scale. She wouldn’t have got a Turkey sandwich from me, she’d have been the filling in a police sandwich for child endangerment.
    One thing I will add (as a former ICU nurse), is that monitoring is recorded and when doctors do their rounds they look back at the monitor info over the past few hours to see if there have been any significant events, such as periods of tachycardia/bradycardia, hypo/hypertension AND hypoxia. They would immediately see there have been sudden dips in the child’s oxygen levels (when the monitor was removed), which may lead to further UNNECESSARY tests and investigations being carried out on a very sick baby, because they won’t know that this f-wit had unplugged the monitor. Holy effing Christ.

I have given birth 2 times and they never ever tell you to unplug things. They give you a call button, a remote with a call button and there are ways to call for Emergecny help and then just some asstiance. They even have a thing in the restroom incase you fall, there is a button by the toilet with a long red rope for if you fell you can still reach to call.

    As a pharmacist who did multiple hospital rotations including a busy ICU, I greatly appreciate that you're able to comment on this situation properly and from personal experience! I'm glad you brought up so many consequences of the baby potentially lacking proper oxygenation for any amount of time. I really don't think that's common knowledge, and I know there's women out there who don't bother to seek out any information once they become pregnant and just wait until something happens.
    This woman felt entitled to the nurse's time, taking her away from a patient who may have actually needed her. The comment, "Because I do need my drinks," was so irritating to hear. No, she doesn't, and it wasn't some clever line that made her sound cool to her potential audience. That baby DOES need the oximeter readings to be accurate, tho! I wonder where the call button is in that room. I'd imagine it's one that is at least somewhat movable and not on the wall. But maybe she doesn't use it because the nurse will "take too long" to respond. :l
    She definitely doesn't seem to understand the reason a nurse would come into the room so quickly when an oximeter stops displaying a reading. Imagine if the baby does start to have problems and the nurses think it's just the mom abusing their compassion and professionalism again. The nurse has to (wants to) give distressed parents some leeway for acting in ways they may not normally act, but they also have to keep the person holding the baby calm for the baby's safety. That's why she kept getting away with it. -.-

    I had a premie so I've been in this exact position so there's definitely a few things being misunderstood here. (Not the sandwich stuff, but being in the NICU)
    1. She did not unplug this baby's oxygen, or any other medical equipment providing life. No pain, no suffering, baby was ok. That is the cord for the oxygen reader which in a velcroed sensor on their foot, so what she affected was the monitor reading so it would look like the babies 02 was dropping causing the nurse to come check. I still see some people thinking it was the 02 it's self, I promise nobody was being suffocated.
    2. These rooms do not have call buttons, or at least mine didn't and it's one of the best in the nation. This was also 11 years ago, but even then hospital rooms still had them. If we needed somebody, we'd have to poke our heads out, or wait till somebody walked by, because you really didn't matter at all as the parents.
    3. You can't get up when you are holding them, and if you do the baby goes back for good. No moving, no moment down on the bed, nothing. Either baby is skin-to-skin with a parent, or baby is in their heated oxygen box, and either way moving is a nurse-required activity. That's sometimes the only time you'll have with them that day, and for several days at a time.
    With those things understood, was this still fully showing what she was willing to do with her medically sensitive baby, and therefore her case is fully warrented? Absolutely, that's bonkers. Most of these babies go home with oxygen still for a while so she just proved in 10 seconds why she should not be trusted with her babies care, at least while they are still that fragile. I know better than anybody not wanting to lay them back down, because you don't know when you'll next get your baby...But I wasn't trying to eat a whole freakin sandwich while doing it! Most they allowed was water, because we still had to pump milk every 2-3 hours. Non. Stop. I didn't even have a sandwich fridge, I'd have to leave my baby for the cafeteria 3 floors down! She's got it easy by comparison, and she still decided to FAFO.

      My kiddo spent a month at Nationwide Children’s in Columbus Ohio 8 years ago and they had call buttons, I hate that your hospital didn’t.
      They also let me stay from 5am (was there every day for rounds) until 2am and then I went to Ronald McDonald house for sleep before doing it again. I couldn’t hold my son until he was 9 days old but as soon as I could, we did skin to skin as long as I could go between pumps or meals and then I’d come right back and hold him again.

At the same time they were weirdly super focused on having me dressing him, and doing crafts to decorate the room, and were not huge fans of me for not doing crafts?? Like I was barely holding it together, I'm tired, my boobs hurt, sheesh lol 😅 Age probably had a lot to do with it, they weren't a fan of that either.

      @Aggressive_Progressive 8 дней назад +1

      @iagreewithyou3478 If they let her eat during I guess she could, but to me it would kind of be like if you used grandpa on his deathbed as a plate.
      Like even if their being premature means they are just a couple weeks under baked and need some time on oxygen, you're still caring for a medically unhealthy baby who's lungs aren't done yet. Holding them is also for their benefit not the parents, it helps them grow and develop properly, so really she should be totally focused on their care when they're awake. Talking, reading to them, touch, it's all incredibly important for premies to thrive outside the womb.
      There would be days I wouldn't eat till I'd gotten back to the Ronald McDonald House, because I didn't want to leave my baby for a second while I was there with him, much less try to eat a sandwich on their head! If she could pee first, she could also have eaten first, but I don't even know how she's not an absolute wreck who's not already zeroed in on her baby as it is. Like your child is covered in wires 24/7, oxygen tube or even a full on mask, IVs, leads glued to their skin, and my son was 15 weeks early so for most of his time he had a feeding tube, and for the first long while all his IVs went through his belly button which was really risky, and she's entirely too chill about it all. It's just a show of incredible immaturity to even be trying to get a sandwich instead of waiting, let alone unplugging the monitor to do it.

    My daughter was born prematurely with a diaphragmatic hernia and had to have life saving surgery four days after birth. We were in the NICU for a long time and we also live in Texas. My mom is a nurse and a pediatric nurse at that, so I grew up knowing basic medical information. For the things I didn't know,i had my mom there to guide me. Sometimes it's necessary to unplug some of the monitors, but it was always done by a medical professional or with their permission. The staff is extremely kind and helpful, they try to ensure both mother and baby are taken care of. But they also have a nurse call button...one that is easily accessible. On top of that, they come to check on you and your baby every hour and usually in between their scheduled checks. So it's not like she would have had to pull that stunt anyway, someone would have been by shortly to check up on them anyway. This was both unnecessary and dangerous. This wasn't about a sandwich, it was about views, plain and simple. I am surprised that neither of the nurses discussed not doing that again, because my mom would have went off on her. She and her baby who is in stable condition, aren't the only babies in that NICU. There were other families (that you inevitably meet) that have been in there for weeks, months and even years. Families who's children aren't stable, who crash multiple times a day, and by pulling that stunt, she could have been pulling medical staff away from another emergency... thinking they have another baby crashing. That is beyond cruel to the other families around her, it's cruel to the medical staff who lose babies everyday to complications, and it's mainly cruel to her child...who could suffer one of a hundred different breathing complications for a baby with underdeveloped lungs. It's beyond irresponsible. It's beyond selfish. It literally shows what a piece of trash person she is. I truly hope that the father saves recording of everything and takes her to court for custody.
    One last thing, I think the rumor about her breaking her own water is false. This person only cares about herself, her pain, her comfort. If she googled how to do it, she would have seen how dangerous it was and all the ways it could go wrong. She could lose the baby, she could scrape her uterus, cause a placental abruption, and die. I doubt she would risk harm to her new cash cow, but mainly she wouldn't risk harm or pain to herself. Just my humble opinion.

    My water spontaneously broke at 35 1/2 weeks. I literally put in my 2 week's notice at work, went home, sat down, and my water broke. I was in labor for 20 hours before my doctor said we needed to do an emergency C-section. My daughter needed 3 days in the NICU. All of that was well over $100,000. Ultimately we ended up having to pay almost $30,000 out of pocket. Took almost 5 years to pay that off.

I would assume America has better maternity than us... So, why not take a few months before having your baby? That's what women normally do no?

    • @BabyShenanigans
      @BabyShenanigans 9 дней назад +6

      @@Leleche Oh loooooooooord don't get me started lol. Maternity leave in the US is UNPAID and it's only 12 weeks. Also I was quitting my job because even if I did maternity leave and came back, the cost of childcare would completely negate the money I made at that job. AND, fun fact, I texted my boss that I was in the hospital in labor, and he asked me if I was coming back THE NEXT DAY. And then got annoyed when I said I wasn't coming back at all, and said he didn't want to have to cover my shifts. He literally expected me to come back to work THE DAY AFTER GIVING BIRTH. I wasn't even DONE by the time my next shift would have started. Even if I had taken the 12 weeks, by 12 weeks out I was still in a considerable amount of pain from the massive invasive surgery I'd had.

I had to wait 10 days to hold him for the first time for about 10 minutes, then wasn't allowed to hold him again for weeks since he stopped breathing and had to be re-intubated. They didn't have sandwiches or even enough chairs for sitting but this is disgusting. I also was not thinking about any food while holding my child who was literally fighting for his life 💔

    • @sparkzyfulton5774
      @sparkzyfulton5774 10 дней назад +1

      Yeah I was very surprised by this too cause she was incredibly lucky to have such an opportunity to be able to hold her son alone in peace. When my son was born all babies and any visiting family were all in same room with atleast one nurse at all times. Even when feeding our children we had men and women and occasionally even children tracing in and out of the room. Nicu is often very strict and on high alert about everything and watch new moms like freaking hawks anyway because sadly some moms have mental problems expesally wien there children are born early and or I'll. She for most part didn't really do anything likely to harm her child since it didn't really matter unless the child's oxygen or whatever started changing during the time it was unplugged from them but it is a potential issue and rude to nurses and it is part of the reason why us good mentally stable mommy's could not have time alone with our children because people like her. Like seriously learn to get up with the child like you will need to learn how to do regardless or freaking wait. I guarantee a nurse would have been around very soon cause again nicus are ussually really really on point about babies and she was incredibly lucky to have time to be alone and in private enough to even have a moment to consider having to do anything to ask for someone to help. Nurses are there to help the child and in turn mommy when able and possible and they usually dont mind but making them think there's a possibility for even a second they they might be having a flat lined child on there watch is crazy. Some think nurses would get used to it but I've heard and could imagine that a potential death of a child during your shifts never become an easy thing to deal with. And yeah they do have to assume the child is flat lining and not that the mother is tampering with there own child's equipment. Extremely sad to think that they would ever need to think a mom would tamper with equipment.

    I never want kids, I don't really have a strong maternal instinct personally but like when someone harms a child I feel like regardless of who you are or how you feel about kids I think you can acknowledge this is fucked. I would sooner take the child in myself and find it a new family than let that shit slide. I feel like this could warrant criminal charges.

    • @godslaughter
      @godslaughter 9 дней назад +6

      You don't have it because "maternal instincts" don't exist. It's an outdated misconception of cognition and physiology. They're nothing more than desires and emotions, like empathy, compassion, being hormonal or being fond of one's young. It's not a force, it's just feelings and emotions. So there's that. In case you ever had someone tell you that there's "something wrong" with that, they're wrong. Not wanting offspring is completely normal and fine.
      And yes! What you describe is basic empathy once more. Most people think that harming a child is bad because it is objectively unethical.

    The extra week can be crucial. 37 weeks is early term. As a new mom, I went through hell to help my baby come through into the world safely. I went through 2 cook balloons, 2 cervidil, 2 pitocin rounds, epidural, and an unplanned C-section. I then was up over 24 hrs to take care of my child,and he was born perfectly healthy just small. Luckily. And I would do that again for my child. I couldn't imagine being such a irresponsible mother

    I was born as a premature kid in 09 of 8/24, and my due date was supposed to be on thanksgiving weekend. Born at six months, my lungs weren’t properly developed, and without this new medication of sorts coming in any later, I wouldn’t have gotten out alive. My parents were worried like crazy for me until I was good enough to get out, and a year later, my brother was born just fine. Even as someone who hasn’t had a child yet or doesn’t have an inkling of the feeling of worrying for your child, this makes me feel as though she doesn’t deserve to be a parent. If you are willing to set your PREMATURE baby in danger OVER HOSPITAL FOOD then you don’t deserve to be a parent for at least another few years, if not then at all.

    I had my son at 32 weeks. He was in the NICU for five weeks and I was in the hospital for nearly two weeks myself. I had a very complicated pregnancy and when I had gone into the hospital, I wasn’t expecting I’d have to stay and have my baby in such an urgent situation. The doctor wanted me to wait until 34 weeks but the circumstances got worse and my son absolutely had to be born as early as possible.
    When we were at the NICU, the nurses were so wonderful, but I could never bring myself to even bother to ask for anything unless it was for my son. They are HIS nurses, not yours. Unplugging the equipment is so irresponsible. My son had to be on oxygen for three months after he was born because he was born so early. He had dips in oxygen levels that came on so suddenly so it’s hard to imagine a person so irresponsible. Unplugging your baby’s equipment for a turkey sandwich is wild.
    My response to her wanting to have her baby earlier is actually insane to me. A week of development can do so much for a baby. It doesn’t make sense morally for her to want to have her baby earlier, but also financially. The earlier you have your baby, the longer they have to be in the NICU. It’s incredibly selfish and irresponsible to push to have your baby that early when it’s not necessary. She wants to get out the hospital as soon as possible, but she’s not even considering the things her baby will have to go through in the NICU. Also, like I said before, financially it’s a stupid decision.
    It makes me really angry to see parents like this, who don’t put their child first. Not all parents deserve to have their children and this is so apparent in this situation. If I could’ve given birth to my son at 34 weeks, I’d absolutely would’ve rather done that than have him at 32. He would’ve been more developed and his stay at the NICU wouldn’t have been as long. As a parent, I’m so incredibly thankful my son is healthy. I can’t imagine not even considering my child’s health, especially after trying to have a baby. This whole situation makes me so angry and it’s honestly disgusting.

    So like... I have two kids, and my youngest was in the NICU for 3 days because she had to be delivered slightly prematurely (36 weeks 6 days) via C-section. And I just don't understand why this woman wouldn't have a normal call bell. Every single time that I've been in a hospital, especially after I had my kids, I have had a call bell to call the nurses whenever I need them, usually it's part of the TV remote or hospital bed. There have been instances where I've been unable to get to the call bell, but nine times out of 10 you have a cord connected to your TV remote that has a button on it specifically to call the nurse if you need to talk to them. Why did she not just use the regular call bell? She literally unplugged the thing that monitors whether or not for kid is breathing because she wanted to rage bait of just using the button designed to call the nurse...
