I'm so grateful for this Doctor! I first heard of him during the program "Healing and the Mind", a five part series aired on PBS throughout the 1990s. I absolutely love it, and I wish it were still available. I have bilatteral, atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia which is severely debilitating and affects both sides of my head and face and is active in all three branches on both sides. It's not for the faint of heart, and I don't believe in suicide. The condition is known as the suicide disease, and two different hospitals and neurosurgeons told me that my case was and still is the worst they've ever dealt with. Having had two brain surgeries and countless pain blocking injections, (the Microvascular Decompression did knock out the pain in the bottom right side of my mouth, specifically the teeth. My dentist wouldn't do anything for it, because there was nothing wrong with my teeth, and thank God.
Dr. Zin's guidance on how to work through and live through the pain changed the entire way I now deal with this condition.as each flare up happens, and I no longer worry about having an attack when out in public. If it comes, it comes! I just have to do the breathing exercises and accupressure (if I can) when it happens. I also use acupuncture and Botox injections every 90 days, although it's not working very well. The biggest breakthrough, however, is the Infrarred laser light pen I use regularily. I knew it would take several months of daily treatments with it, but it's starting to make a difference! I'm hoping I can get off the medications I'm taking to control the muscle spasms and whole-body twitches along with the breakthrough pain.
If there's one thing I can tell anyone who's also suffering with TN pain, it would be this:
Surround yourself with supportive people who can be there when you need them, and even more importantly, if you haven't found a good doctor who can help you with it, don't give up! Finally, I use music, especially instrumental music when it gets really bad. The only exception to that is the ancient music of the Orthodox Christian Church to which I'm a participant. For me, it's a way of life, and it just makes sense that I know how Christ suffered for all of us, was crucified and died and then rose from the grave on the third day. It's His love through the Holy Spirit and through other people who believe in me that gives me the strength to take everything one day, (or even one minute or breath) at a time. I wouldn't want to pursue my singing career if it were any different, and I know music has also been such an important part of the healing process.
I use Jon's 2 CD set called mindfulness meditation for pain relief as part of my management plan for TMJD and other chronic conditions like my bipolar spectrum disorder, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.
The cds (well the first set) were given to be my psychiatrist. He introduced me to meditation, hypnosis, mindfulness, sleep stories and other techniques that saved my life.
I was diagnosed with bipolar in 2009 but because of having a treatment resistant, rapid cycling bipolar spectrum disorder it took ten years to get the combination of medicine right so my moods were stable. During this time the techniques I learnt for managing pain, tiredness and mood swings meant that I avoided being put in hospital and also helped to slow the kindling effect that occurs when not medicated/managed properly.

I felt discomfort because I could feel his coughing since I have that condition due to a chronic bronchial condition. Nonetheless he continued with his moment by moment presence to accept each cough and just let it go.

I was so impressed with Jon when I first came across him in "Becoming Conscious: The Science of Mindfulness". Since then this is second video where he's taken shots at what I assume he views as his political opposites. Very, very disappointing. He should put more effort into practicing what he preaches.

A lot of chicken before the egg... why not use a practice which fosters all that ‘trying’ to be in a certain posture, to think about reverberations ;for heavens sakes- (big wds to sound important).. and so it goes on... prescribing prescribing. Give a technique to help the mind develop restful alertness - don’t presume it can be there.

The last 3 years has been crucial.
I just want my son to be happy and not live in fear as well às his step brother and stepsisters . I'm a first time Mom and it was hard to not show my emotions in front of him.
