Played all of them and Carnoustie is my personal favourite and its over 7400 its pure golf no tricks no real views. Its difficulty comes from its design. A true golfers course.

@@philiphemmings3199 other than nostalgia the old course is not even in the top 10. Its short and easy with hardly any good holes. The 17th just a gimmick and the 1st and 18th is just a grass field.

Royal Aberdeen front 9 was the best 9 of my golfing trip to Scotland.
The final run home at Dornoch ( last 5 holes or so ) was fantastic, plus the split level par fours.
At North Berwick, i loved 1,2, and the walled green 13th. The back 9 from about the 12th. Is fantastic. The blind second shots are great, and conquering the Rudan par 3 was fun( a wonderful golf hole). The best hole at North Berwick is the irritating and quixotic 16th. We were playing very well until we had multiple shots to try and hold that green and racked ip a 7 on a par 4. I discovered later that both Phil Mickleson and Jack Nicholas had come to a similar fate on this hole! It turns out that a low running hybrid from a distance is the best way to negotiate the front of the green!

I was fortunate enough in 2004 to play the Old & New Course @ St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, Glen Eagles, Montrose, Monifieth & Panmure. Kingsbarns was only a few years old at that time and it immediately became my favorite course I've played. Returning this fall with a total of 12 guys to a course list of: Panmure, Carnoustie, Gullane, Dumbarnie, & Kingslbarns. Leaving 2-days open to try the "Open Ballot" and play the Old Course again. Planning on hitting 2 of the following as well: Crail, Lundin, Elie or Leven Links

Went to Scotland last summer and played Turnberry, Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and St Andrews. Turnberry was my favorite. Royal Dornoch had the best architecture, Castle Stuart was a fun track, Kingsbarns had the best conditioning and views, Carnoustie wasn’t too difficult until i got to the back 9. Ouch. St Andrews had the history and the feel.

I have played Carnoustie, Kingsbarn, Turnberry Ailsa (pre-Trump) and the Old Course. The Old Course was not designed by Tom Morris in 1552. He was born in 1821 and became Keeper of the Green at the Old Course in the late 1860s. He refined and upgraded it, but the Old Course evolved. Golf was played on the links of St. Andrews in the mid 1400s, maybe earlier.

I've played 6 of these. But there are serious courses left out that really do capture the essence of Scottish golf more than some of these --- Cruden Bay is my favorite, but Gullane 1 is also great.

I’ve played seven of the courses in your top ten and they were all outstanding in different ways. I would suggest expanding out a little and playing courses like Cruden Bay, Machrihanish, Crail, and Gullane to name a few. There are so many great courses and even plenty of them off the beaten track that are great.

Best course I've played was Whitekirk just round from North Berwick. Great holes & greens & super tough. Better views than the lot of these with superb light & sea & country views. £22 to play rather than the rip off of these. Old owner was selling & 3 rat conmen done an investment con. Hired Paul Lawrie for changes when even pros struggled to par it. Now a caravan park and I,l miss it forever.

Why oh why do people rate St Andrews old course always number one. Take away the history the town and the surroundings and just look at the course is not that great, a first and last hole as wide as a length of a football pitch, a 17th hole cutting a corner of a hotel with a bunker in front of the green. Kingsbarns has many great holes my favourite hole is the eighteenth, I’ve been lucky enough to play there twice but wow you do get ripped off there. Every time the open goes to St Andrews you know the pros will get an easy ride.

How many times has this list been done? A million? Is there an original thought anywhere in here? Are you bringing anything new to the golf landscape with this or is it just to drive clicks? There are so many ways to show off Scotland golf and yourselves without reaching for literally the lowest hanging fruit possible. Maybe take an angle no one else has taken before. Something besides another Best Courses is Scotland video.

I grew up in Ayrshire Scotland where the Turnberry course is located. It was a respected and loved course. It has lost it's appeal to many locals (a) because, it's reported that since Mr Trump took ownership, it's too expensive to play (b) because of the name 'Trump' having been added to it. I think it safe to say the man is not very well respected in Scotland, and to have put his name on this course is perhaps one reason why. You'll note there are several courses throughout the country that have changed ownership over the centuries but none have chosen to add their name to these courses, out of respect for their history. Just saying!!
