Okay, this video was incredibly informative for me. In just a few minutes, I've learned more about Marc Cohn and his song than I have in the last 30 years. Thank you so much for this fantastic reaction video, dear Beth
Such an iconic song that always lifts my spirits whenever it appears on my car radio. However, I prefer the studio version of some of the tones and inflections (such as around the "catfish on the table" and "when you have not got a prayer" parts). Perhaps it's just because I've heard the song so many times that I'm anticipating the studio version in advance and it feels like I've missed out when he plays with particular lyrics.
So catfish is a common river fish in the US and is a favorite throughout the south. It's a stronger tasting fish that's typically coated in cornmeal and fried. It's often served with hushpuppies, which is a fried ball of cornmeal with herbs and if the catfish and hushpuppies are cooked properly, they're heavenly.
@@BethRoars Hush Puppies (apparently two words, I checked for recipes) are a golf ball sized ball of cornmeal flour (with leavening, mildly spiced and chopped white or green onions) that are fried in oil. I'm in Manitoba, Canada and we don't eat catfish, maybe because it's an ugly fish, but Amerucans love to come up here and fish for it. Some people will have it if it's smoked.
A wonderful reaction, Beth...his raw emotion is catching! Marc grew up on the same suburban Cleveland street that I did...just a few years later. In fact, on his debut album which featured "Walkin' In Memphis", he has a song titled "Silver Thunderbird" about his childhood memories of watching his father driving his prized car down "Winslow", the name of our street.
I saw Marc sing this last summer when he was touring with Shawn Colvin (another great singer!). Usually in concert the spoken introduction is longer than the actual song as he tells the story of his trip to Memphis in even greater, heartfelt detail. He talks a lot about his visit with Muriel Davis at the Hollywood Cafe including the singing gospel songs with her (he didn't know many, so she kept to the easy ones for him). It's a great autobiographical story-song and you can tell that it was a life-changing experience for him.
This is easily one of my favorite songs, even when it's sung by someone else. But nothing compares to this version. It gives me chills every single time I hear it!
We loved your vocal analysis of one of the greatest singers in Brazil who will be greatly missed. There is also another singer who is at the same level called Elis Regina who it would be good for you to know.
Great song, great reaction! It might be fun to compare Paul Simon's tribute to the same topic (a pilgrimage to Memphis) by reviewing his song "Graceland". That is worthwhile on its own but makes a nice contrast to Marc Cohn in this context.
Catfish are an type of fish prymaryly bottom feeders inhabiting marshy (swamp/bog) waters and feeding on the other fish and shellfish the can be small enoguh to fit in ypu palm or up to 80lbs or more depending pn breed, room to grow and food supply. Look yup noodling its a fish meath used for catching the big ones where the perspns hand is holding the lure and theyll hppk there arm through the mouth and gills to hold them ots long term wose not gping to hurt the fish, but you do need to avoid the toxic barb on the dorsal fin
