All played excellent. Disco & Octave really nailed it. Overplay loses the drums and the 1 but sounds killer. As a guitarist who also gigs bass for 15 years, I started as the Overplay to more the Root guy.
I’m usually a mix between octave and “show off”, but that’s only because of the style I like to play. I’m very inspired by Pink Floyd and Paul McCartney, and a lot of the bass lines there have octaves, chromatic notes, plenty of melody, arpeggios and such. For Pink Floyd, especially Breathe (In The Air) and The Great Gig In The Sky. Great base playing on those.

Stepping out and playing the “fun stuff” is great but pocket pays the bills baby! Proud bassist for over 18 years as of January ‘25. You’ll always have a gig with the ability to serve the song first at the end of the day.
The root note guy can also mix live sound from the stage if the venue has no sound guy and if they do have a FOH guy, the root note player is always their monitor guy, and sometimes root note guy will also have a Moog Phatty.

for most genres, as long they dont exaggerate, the show off will sound the best. the crowd usually can barely hear the bass, so its better if we add some dynamics instead of trying to complement the harmony (as long as there are enough band members on that already)
Man, I recorded some bass for a Doom Metal band. Even though I normally like to add a "little something" here and there, I stayed in the pocket for the whole recording (not to my liking, I thought it was very basic, but okay). The mixing guy said it was "one of the best basslines he edited" LOL
@@GlauberLCR because in doom and sludge (and any other adjacent sub genre), less tends to be more. Having a good distorted or fuzzed out bass tone is miles better than playing something different and or flashy, even a basic clean warm tone can be amazing. This all depends on the context as with all music, and playing something different to the guitar can end up being better than just playing the root and or same rhythm.

I like metal with guitar solos, bass lines and stuff, but I don't like when it turns into Dragonforce where the objective is to play as many notes per second as possible. You need a balance. In disco songs like this, the "show off" gets too much. You should be able to DANCE to it, and a steady rythm is what you dance to, and the show off just plays as many notes as possible but looses that bass rythm to dance to.

I love doin' a little chordage here and there, I generally really like the sound of letting things ring out and playing on top of them. Hard, but satisfying when you can figure out a nice line.

I’m very passionate about the bass having spent 35 years playing studying and teaching the instrument and the attempts to excuse mediocrity on the instrument or push idiotic theories about what it means to be a bass player are something I have always done battle with. where I grew up, every bass player was mediocre and I had these ideas pushed on me as a child, and I had to unlearn it. That is why I comment.
Yep sometimes you just need to do what the song requires and no more. As a young guitarist I frequently overplayed as I was constantly wanting to show off and it took growing up to learn sometimes actually not playing at all at the right moments can be just as effective if not more so
Here with the octaves and the little runs!! I start with roots to get a solid beginning so I can lock in with the other musicians. I get more comfy and add more flavor as the song goes on. All bass players know that these techniques are appropriate when used correctly and can elevate your playing!!
I just listened to many Foo Fighters songs focussing on the bass. Nate Mendel manages to play like a showoff, yet he does it so tastefully that it just fits into the song and never sticks out. He is an awesome player.
After playing in power trios for quite some years, I became the chord guy. Every time the guitarist did the solo section, I tried to support harmony by playing chords. It still works.

Just fight your natural tendencies to make it all like a guitar, stick to serving the groove first and foremost, and you'll do well. It's a mindset.
I use all those techniques in my playing even on double bass. I have found a combination of all those elements essential for me as a depping bassist.
slap sounds the best in my opinion but as a die hard iron maiden fan my favourite has to be the gallop!
