in 2019 pretty sure the world first softcore MC clear was filled with level 55s and people wearing greens, fire resist gear is overkill if your group has some semblance of a strategy and coordination
1:25 best strategy I've done in the past is to max range the disorient, hunters can max it and almost always have aggro when the melee get disoriented. Feign death when the hound is close and it goes back to tank. Unclear if it'll still work for classic servers though!
Ngl, I did Mc back in Vanilla lile 2006-7ish, but when you suggested that, I remembered thats what we did. Just gotta make sure someone like an offtank can bring the hound back to the main tank before he starts going after healers. Back them I was a pally, so I mainly just spammed one heal button. Im sure the meta now is diff with all the data out, but I was pretty much a portable fire aura, BoK bic, and told to keep the judgement that restores mana on hit on the mobs at all times. That was back then when you had to buff everyone individually, so literally every trash mob pull we had to refresh them lol. And back then on Alliance only Dwarf priests had fear ward, so we wiped on the 2nd boss or whenever the Hellhound boss is, every might for like a month. Only other option was for Warrior to stance dance out of it, but it takes a few secs and the boss eats someone by then.
Or just equip a couple fire res pieces that you should be working on anyway for Firemaw. You only lose a tiny bit of dps and resist more than the pots can absorb.
Coming from a speedrunning perspective their comp is god awful, but even out of a casual perspective having the bare minimum of 4 warriors/offtanks is wild. Pulling the mobs into the tunnel is weird, you put all into a cone, you normally pull the mobs towards lava side to prevent aoe onto the group while banishing one in the group, but that's also coming from a perspective that you have enough warrior to pick up loose mobs which is always gonna happen since they stun.
Also as a tank who has died to those mobs in softcore, the tanks need to pick up their targets with auto attacks into sunder. Anything like battle shout or an early heal causes multiple mobs to target one person, which will kill almost anybody. Those packs are brutal

Core hounds are simple; don't overcomplicate it. Tank and offtank: when the tank gets dazed or stunned, he loses aggro; have the offtank pick it up and face away from the raid. Don't dispel anything except the fire res debuff and the HP one (I think).
