- In this tactics video, we are going to explain how the half-spaces in football can be manipulated to progress the ball.
The use of half-spaces grew more prominent in the football vernacular during Pep Guardiola’s time as Barcelona’s head coach where he frequently referred to using them.
Using the half-spaces gives teams a way of playing passes, at an angle, into areas of the pitch they might not be able to from the centre or from the wings as we will explain in our tactical analysis.

Very educational video.Nice work!
Thank you!
Love this video, I hope more fans see this because a lot of RUclipsrs that makes tactical videos think any area behind the midfield is the half space.
Horizontal spaces are also important to note so that players don’t overload and can progress the ball upwards more efficiently
Very well explained, loads of videos on this topic and way of playing over complicate the explanation of what's a simple but effective way of playing.
AMAZING VIDEO 👊🏽👏🏽

Is there a particular defensive setup which is more effective at defending the half-spaces?
The 4-1-4-1 / 4-5-1 provides a good cover of the half-spaces with two of the three central midfielders covering the half-spaces.
Alternatively, playing with a back three (for example in a 3-5-2) would allow one defender at a time to step out and attack a player receiving in the half-space.

Coaches are talking way too much about this kind of stuff, as long as pro players can't even pass a ball with their weaker foot. It's nice to invent tactical words and ideas, but pro's should practice the basics more. Often people don't realize how fast the game is played. Within a second professional football players can run 5 meters. So, what point is there if you're at the right place of the pitch, but you can't give the ball with your right foot, when that's the only way to make a dangerous cross? A cross with your left foot would give the ball a curve that makes the ball go behind them. Robben was a player who was considered dangerous, but he always need Lahm to overlap, because he wasn't able to give a cross with his right foot.
