Thanks for posting this. I have a Kershaw 1600 Chive with the same problem, I guess. I took it apart and cleaned it, thinking the spring assy was just gummed up, but could never get it to snap open again. I was considering sending it in to Kershaw since I could not figure out why I couldn't get it working. Good to know that the torsion spring is a problem, and that Kershaw will send parts out for free. (I already requested a replacement slide-lock which had broken (plastic)).
Assembly is a bit easier if you run one of those 3 smaller screws in from the pocket clip side. It helps to keep everything aligned. Once you've got the other screws in place you can pull that first one out and reinstall it properly.

What was the cleaner you used? Did I hear you say “moss” cleaner?
I use either carburator cleaner, brake cleaner, contact cleaner, or even isopropyl alcohol if the knife is fully disassembled.
