Sounds like the perfect place to collect and store all the electricity. I wonder if anyone is trying to find a way to do that. Constant renewable energy.

if an OLD LOCAL tell you it's not safe, it's not safe. good choice. most adults and teenagers would tell you anything to get your business, ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

Who knew atlas ob had a YT channel ?
I've travel extensively and always refer to your maps when looking for something kooky.
    Love your work..

how does your channel not have like a billion subscribers?! I didn't notice until now I just figured due to the great quality of your videos that you already had at least a 100k following.

My biggest problem is the videos are too short and not very descriptive. So I'm guessing that's why.

I'm glad you listened to the old local. I'm from Venezuela. No buddy, non-locals (and very obvious non-locals as yourselves, and I say this lovingly) would have been in danger. The kids would have been in danger too. I'm sorry you missed it, but it's OK.

WHOA. Those lightning storms were amazing. An I thought the monsoons, Here in Phoenix were pretty far out. However don't think I would want to be outside when it was going on. Not nice to tick off Mother Nature. She can throw a real fit.

Cool video! Soon you will be able to go to that Island and sleep there as long as you want... Venezuela is getting better, we are evolving into a better society, despite the disaster we are living nowadays. I would recommend to you the expeditions of Charles Brewer Carias and the cave he found in the south of the country in 2005. There will be no guns and all the amusement of unexplored nature.

I'm from Maracaibo and I was casually talking to a really close friend about the lightning a couple of weeks ago, how going there would be awesome, bla bla bla and then see went "yes, it is. one of the most marvelous things I've seen". Turns out her undergrad thesis for audiovisual journalism was about it, and she was broke so she and he partners contacted some Japanese scientists that were investigating it and she got all the trips for free and in exchange they had to do the filming.
Indeed there was a big chance everything would have turned out ok, but in the Sur del lago, Sierra de Perijá and Alta Guajira regions it's better not to risk it unless you're with someone that knows the place very well... plus you stick out too much.
A question: you came just for that? what a pity :(
Your channel is awesome. I came across it because of the video on "mind control" pink. Keep it up.

+CinnamonCari Thanks so much! Glad to hear a local say we made the right call. We stuck out like sore thumbs, ha! We were doing some travel to wonders throughout South America. We also went here: ruclips.net/video/Hcc3eU40JpY/видео.html and I made a series of short doc videos about the trip you can see here: ruclips.net/video/oW5vF0_0j9k/видео.html
I am so glad you stumbled across the channel! When I go back to see the lightning storm up close (which I totally am) I will hit you up! :)

Atlas Obscura really? it's not living hell i live here and i lived half of my life in usa. just because there are dangerous people here does not mean all of the citizens are criminals we also suffer insecurity... i comprehend your situation and yes if i were you and it was the first time coming here i Would be terrified because of the horrible things they say about us.. Just wanted to let you know. thanks for coming and posting a video and sharing your experience but i also feel a bit insulting that comment "im glad i didn't got kidnapped" i have years living here and have not been robbed and have not once had an awfull experience were you went the people are more humble... the city is way difirent .. we follow your culture we have smartphones we here your songs have parties we are normal people. Venezuela is beautiful it just has the wrong people leading it the oposition here is very strong we all want peace. but we are under a dictadure... i loved your video just didn't like that one comment cause your making us look like we are all dangerous.

I love your presentation stlye and the editing of your videos is awesome. How do you get that map so you can pinpoint the location onto it? and how do you write your scripts and stuff? would be great knowledge for a future project of mine.
also are you guys done making videos? :(

Would it be possible to harness the electricity? Like with laying power lines in the water and connect it to powerful batteries. That would be real free energy :)

Bandits are looking for easy pickings. One warning shot would have probably been enough to deter them.
